Would the Nets Consider a Trade of Cousins?

Depending on what you read, the Nets and Rockets talked about a trade of Vince Carter for his cousin, Tracy McGrady, last February but it fell apart because 1) McGrady was so upset at the rumor he announced he would undergo knee surgery or 2) the Nets didn't want TMac. Clutch Fans, the Rockets fansite, suggests talks could be revisited. VC is owed $37.6 million over three years, TMac $22.5 million over one.

No. Carter is reliable player. T mac is gets injured too often. He’s never been the same player since he left Toronto

@RD
Actually he hasnt been the same since he left Orlando. Orlando is where he made his name.

If Nets were to make this trade it is because they feel they have a legitimate shot at Lebron. Plain and simple.

@Chris2
I think that’s probably true, but they might also want to start clearing some space for the kids, too, particularly if they get lucky in this year’s draft and Yi becomes Bargnani. We can always hope and dream.
TMac reportedly is working out hard at the ATTACK Athletics in Chicago…and showing resolve. Could I see it happening? If he’s recovered, sure. There are worse salary dumps than taking a one year risk with TMac.

imagine tmac and boozer sitting next to each other on the bench in their crisp armani suits out for the year with knee injuries.
nets wont let it happen

T Mac is a shell of his former self mentally and physically while Carter still plays like he gives a damn. No thank you.
Nice to see that some of us have stopped the Yi and Dirk comparisons, and have downgraded those hopes to “Yi becomes Bargnani”. LMAO. I hope he does become Bargnani or even better, that would be a coup. But if he doesnt, because at this point he doesn’t even look like he’s on the level of Bargnani prior to his breakout season last year, the next thing you’ll be hearing is:
“Lets hope Yi becomes Brian Scalabrine”
“Lets hope Yi becomes Jeff Turner”
“Lets hope Yi becomes Joe Wolf”

No way. That’d be disgusting. McGrady is a retired player.

“The Rockets explored talks with the Nets before the deadline for Vince Carter, who is owed $33+ million over the next two years, but the rumor at the time was New Jersey wasn’t interested in taking back McGrady. That may change as GM Rod Thorn reportedly couldn’t give Carter away. They just might have to do that this offseason.”
On February 18, Fred Kerber said:
“Yes, there were talks and offers. Some made no sense, some were great deals – for the other team. And Net counter offers were sometimes one step shy of felony robbery. But Carter is a talent, having a terrific year all around and the Nets aren’t going to give him away. Thorn would be more apt to duck his head in a vat of acid then deal Carter on a straight salary dump.”

That article is nothing but speculation, just take a look at some things they say:
“The real question is could Camby, Al Thornton, DeAndre Jordan or even the unlikely Eric Gordon be prize throw-ins to any team willing to take on one of those burdens?”
“A trade of McGrady, Landry and Brooks for Stoudemire and Barbosa is one both teams would have to seriously consider.”
“We can break down the teams we know will be shopping this offseason, but things are going to change quickly — a player that wasn’t expected to be available (Paul? Danny Granger?) could shockingly go on sale at the right price.”
LMAO, do they really think the Clippers would throw in Gordon or Thornton just to get rid of Kaman, Randolph or Davis? Do they think they can get STAT and Barbosa for that? Do they think they could ha ve shot a Paul or Granger??
GIMME A BREAK!

ALthough I’m a fan of VC, I would make the trade if the deal includes T-Mac, Shane Battier, Carl Landry, Aaron Brooks, or player along those lines. Also, the Nets can’t lose any of their young prospects such as CDR or Ryan Anderson.

There were talks. That’s not speculation. The Rockets could use another scorer and talked to the Nets about Carter.
Nets tried to trade Carter at the deadline.

On February 17, Dave D’Alessandro reported the Nets don’t like any of the offers the Rockets and Spurs made:
“Peers familiar with conversations Thorn has had with the Spurs and Rockets say their offers for Carter don’t appeal to the Nets.”
The Rockets can keep their garbage. The Nets didn’t want their garbage in Feb, and wont take it now.
by Andrés on Jun 4, 2009 3:20 PM EDT reply actions
They didn’t need that trade then, and they dont’ need it now.
by Tal Barzilai on Jun 4, 2009 3:27 PM EDT reply actions
I can see this trade happening at some point next season. When – i don’t know but it makes sense. The Rockets don’t have a lot of assets but they are unlikely to re-sign TMac at the end of the season when he is a free agent unless it is on the cheap. So why not try and get something good for his expiring contract. VC would work well in Houston, he wouldn’t have to be the first option but his scoring would always help the team. The fact that he is a veteran also makes this potential trade more likely. Now if Thorn could get Houston to take on Najera’s contract as well that would be fantastic and more cap space for the Nets. A mexican playing in a Texas market makes it possible.
However, TMac might refuse to play for the Nets and if that happens I think he will have to give up a fair amount of his final year to get bought out.
I think at some point it gets done.

NO WAY! We had to put up with having marburry..he’s like the same thing! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TO TMAC…there is now way I root for him..that would be awful!
by ChrisGNetfan on Jun 4, 2009 3:46 PM EDT reply actions
hey I wouldn’t be surprised if this ever happened. After all, the owner of this team is a miserable guy who only cares about saving money. But in that article they’re speculating. There were talks in Feb and the Nets weren’t interested in what Houston had to offer. That’s all.
The Nets have the opportunity to build a very special team, but they could dump his captain’s contract. That’s no surprise to me. It’s the nevermind Nets we are talking about.
by Andrés on Jun 4, 2009 3:47 PM EDT reply actions
I’ll take a different viewpoint on this…getting out from under two years of VC’s big contract would be an attractive idea, IF it meant that we were really going to spend that money down the road, on a younger, healthier free agent, LIKE DWADE. The problem is, that many of those people who follow the NETS, like on this board, HATE RATNER and think he would dump VC, and then NOT spend the money on the right free agent.
They might be right. I may be crazy, but it just might be a lunatic your looking for….

Billy Joel’s, “Glass Houses” was released in 1980. You may need a new catch phrase. These days Billy Joel is the coolness and relevance equivalent of Paul Reiser.

$22M for McGrady to sit behind the Nets bench for a year looking good in a suit? Brilliant!
Clear VC’s salary because of a dream that Yi will need to be paid instead? Even more brilliant!
I am sure a move like this will have investors throwing money at Ratner for a new arena before you know it.
by Ispartan on Jun 4, 2009 4:24 PM EDT reply actions
Paul it’s not that simple. You can have all the capspace you want, but you may not find someone who wants to sign with your lottery team, thorn himself admitted it could be kind of pie in the sky.
That 2010 mirage is nothing but a PRETEXT to excuse salary dump moves. I can’t believe people are so naif.
by Andrés on Jun 4, 2009 4:29 PM EDT reply actions
I hope this does not happen. VC has something left and puts up effort. TMac has nothing left an dgets injured every year.
I think LeBron will feel he has something to prove in Cleveland. Cleveland can pay the most. I don’t see him coming here especially if the team is stripped of an asset like VC.

LOL, another BIG no thank you! It is a toss up who has had more time on the bench due to injuries Grant Hill or McGrady.
by JustinNJ on Jun 4, 2009 8:04 PM EDT reply actions
There is a reason Rod signed him through 2012. He has plenty still in the tank for three more years.

t mac is wrecked, his knee would probably collapse after fisrt 5 games of the season, end this discussion, we dont want tmac
by netsfan on Jun 4, 2009 8:55 PM EDT reply actions
i’ll take tmac. If that trade happens, lets get boozer. Lineup will be DH,CDR,TMAC,BOOZER, and LOPEZ. And if Tmac dont work out he’s a free agent after the year.
by jes on Jun 4, 2009 9:37 PM EDT reply actions
I see no point in doing this trade now.
If were going to dump carter for expiring contracts we can do it at the trade deadline.
by Kevin on Jun 5, 2009 12:20 AM EDT reply actions
I agree with you Kevin. If near the trade deadline, we are playing under 500 ball, and we didn’t sign Boozer, then we dump VC. But if we are solidly playoff bound, we keep him and
hope for the second round. With Boozer and VC and Blair or Clark playing well, and no major injuries, we make it to the second round. But I don’t think TMAC ever plays another ten games in a row. GO NETS!
by Paul Erstein on Jun 5, 2009 2:58 AM EDT reply actions
i say get boozer, leave t mac alone. i understand the economics of the sports better then most, but we have to stay competitive to at least lure people over here…t mac is finished, mentality and physically. he never did get over that gmae seven loss against the jazz where he put the team on his back then lost…

luv t-mac but he’s washed up! always hurt!! we dont need him to warm up the bench all season!
