Bass Wants to Talk with Nets, Says Agent

The Mavs and Hornets will pursue Dallas free agent Brandon Bass this week. The New Orleans Times Picayune reports his agent also wants to talk with the Nets. Bass, a 6'8" power forward who averaged 8.4 ppg and 4.5 rpg coming off the bench, is looking for the MLE. Rod Thorn has said the Nets haven't decided whether they'll use theirs but they do appear interested in Bass...among other bigs.

Brandon Bass would fit perfect…. Get it done…Please..Please I really think this guy has something…

by Connor on Jun 30, 2009 8:07 PM EDT reply actions

Where to put him? He’s probably looking for a starting job. Is he willing to play behind Yi and are we willing to spend the entire MLE on a back-up PF? He’ll be making more than Yi.

by BJ on Jun 30, 2009 8:16 PM EDT reply actions

nets wont do it cause they cheap but i hope they prove me wrong

by julian on Jun 30, 2009 8:18 PM EDT reply actions

I agree, he has the the toughness we need. I think he makes us a playoff team. I think he’ll be tough to get but he’s the guy. And if we can get Camby and find a way to get rid of Boone, Swat and Simmons that be even better…

by supreme on Jun 30, 2009 8:19 PM EDT reply actions

He isn’t looking for a starting job. His agent specifically says that. He didnt start a single game last year.

That said, I suspect this is agent talk to get as many teams as possible interested. One way to do that is to create a constituency for the player among fans, who then relay their feelings to the front office.

He wants to return to Dallas, but it sounds like Cuban, who already has a big payroll, isnt ready to break the bank. He made a BIG mistake last year with Diop, wanting to outbid the Nets…and he did. Problem is Diop wasnt worth it and he had to trade him at a loss.

GET HIM! get him get him!

i would feel so much better about our pf position and rebounding with him on the team.

by superb on Jun 30, 2009 8:23 PM EDT reply actions

My foot they are. They Nets are probably just going fishing and pursuing big-mouth bass and bonito.

by Joshua on Jun 30, 2009 8:24 PM EDT reply actions

Does anyone know if Harris picked up his option?

I dont see us going after Bass. Maybe we put in a call to see what his asking price is. But a lot of teams are likely interested, and he will get a big chunk of money. I still think Nets want to maintain maximun cap flexibility for 2010.

by Chris2 on Jun 30, 2009 8:26 PM EDT reply actions

I meant to say, did Hassell pick up his option?

by Chris2 on Jun 30, 2009 8:26 PM EDT reply actions

@Chris2
I assume he did or we would know about it…since it would be a big surprise. However, if he didnt, the Nets would be UNDER the cap by about $4 million…and wouldnt have an MLE to spend. Only teams above the cap get MLE’s.

by Net Income on Jun 30, 2009 8:29 PM EDT reply actions

would really like to add bass. a big tough PF, but i dont see it. we are obviously going to give Yi every chance to succeed and we cleared up a bunch of cap space for 2010.

as we all know Rod doesnt really use the MLE on one guy and Bass will get a nice offer and it will be for more than one year. are rod and kiki in love with bass that much where they will give him MLE type money and multiple years? a 2nd year with a team option isnt going to work with bass.

we are at 15 guys so that is another issue, but if push came to shove and we really wanted bass we would buyout swat or get him moved for a 2nd round pick or something.

Bass would fit into the new team because he is young and would have trade value as the years go on if we wanted to or needed to move him. he is a thick guy and he can get up for rebounds and finish around the basket.

i’d like a lopez-bass duo to clog the paint and crash the boards. it would be a nice addition, but other parts need to be moved and im not sure rod/kiki would wana add him past this year.

by xcalibur on Jun 30, 2009 8:31 PM EDT reply actions

I would like to know if thoses his real stats or was he just playing for a big pay day ala Mikki Moore?

by BJ on Jun 30, 2009 8:36 PM EDT reply actions

I was surprised when New Orleans let Bass go to Dallas to begin with. I think they had an opportunity to pick up an option on Bass but felt like they he was a nothing player. They wound up signing Melvin Ely instead, who has given them nothing. They also gave up on Chris Anderson one year too soon. They have given absurd contracts to Peja, to Morris Peterson, to Rasual Butler, to Posey. Made a bad trade for Mike James when he was clearly done. They still have no depth. That team is run quite poorly. They are lucky that Chris Paul fell into their laps. Its too bad they are in financial distress, cause thatd be the perfect team to pawn off Najera on.

by Chris2 on Jun 30, 2009 8:56 PM EDT reply actions

He’s not coming here guys. Notice the article says he hopes to talk to NEW ORLEANS, not the Nets. He seems to be a straight up guy and will want to either go back to the team that drafted him, or the team he is currently on. He went to HS in Louisiana, played college ball in Louisiana, got drafted by NO, and is active in organizations in NO…no way he’s coming to NJ, ALL-ELSE BEING EQUAL. Now if we offer him more money than NO, thats a different story. But, we don’t exactly have a track record of doing such things.

by brian on Jun 30, 2009 9:13 PM EDT reply actions

By the way, there was some kind of story today that said there is inside information that Lebron and Bosh are intending on teaming up in 2010. If thats the case, the options of where they play are small. Cleveland looks like they will be able to offer a second max contract in 2010 because Illgauskus comes off the books, but it will depend on if they sign any free agents this summer and how they deal with Varaejo. The Knicks may or may not have the cap space to sign 2 max contracts. They probably need to get rid of one of Curry or Jeffries for an expiring contract and perhaps let Lee and Nate leave. Then theres the Nets who look like they are in great shape in 2010 and should be able to offer both guys max contracts. So, I would sit tight this summer and not sign anyone that will compromise the ability to sell those guys on the idea of playing together for the Nets, with Brooklyn perhaps on the near horizon.

we could use this guy but i doubt we’ll be able to get him

by Andrew on Jun 30, 2009 9:26 PM EDT reply actions

Why??
Why Brandon Bass??
Dont we have enough bench warming PFs??
SWill
Boone
Najera
and now….

Battie – who plays D aaaaand has a jumper!!

He would be a great practice opponent for Brook and Yi

Nothing serious is going to happen until Brooklyn is 100%.

Now if Phoenix or Toronto calls asking for a 1st rd and a couple expiring contracts for Bosh or Amare that changes EVERYTHING!

Seems like we have a logjam at the guard spot??
Rafer – MIA!! trade bait

DHarris – trade rumors? He needs to be the captain and play some D!!

Lee – how is he the starter already??

CDR – someone forgot this kid was an all american? And the leader for that team??
TWill –
Dooling -

by DJ HeavyDuty on Jun 30, 2009 9:29 PM EDT reply actions

Chris2 do you have a link to the LBJ Bosh team up.

by Connor on Jun 30, 2009 9:33 PM EDT reply actions

TWill – big talent and plays pg sg sf
Dooling – trade bait but will be the locker room leader

There will be a fight for playing time so expect the best out of these guys once the whistle blows

This organization has said everyone is up for trade except Brook.
Devin is getting a little full of himself but definetly needs to take another step to become an elite player.

by DJ HeavyDuty on Jun 30, 2009 9:39 PM EDT reply actions

The articles make it seem that Lee won’t have to compete with CDR for the starter spot! Why not? CDR proved himself ON THE NETS TEAM last season after being unfairly relegated to bench warmer for most of the season. Let’s have fair competition between Lee and CDR for the starter position and may the best player start. We should have been able to begin to decide with BOTH Lee and CDR at the summer league games. Do I already smell manure in the game?

Bass = too good to pass up if u get a decent chance at him. This guy will outperform his salary level.

by Ronnie Fangod on Jun 30, 2009 10:07 PM EDT reply actions

@Connor,
Apparently it was on Twitter posted by a semi respectable sportswriter- so no article, just ‘Tweet’

Noted sportswriter Roland Lazenby tweets that LeBron James and Chris Bosh are planning to sign with the same team when the two are free-agents a year from now.

“The inside source says LeBron and Bosh have plans to end up playing together,” Lazenby writes. “Will Shaq interrupt those plans? Prolly (sic) not.”

My thoughts on Bass:

http://netsarescorching.com/2009/05/22/free-agent-targets-brandon-bass/

In short, I love him. Plus he will come cheap. I don’t think we will get him though.

by Sebastian Pruiti on Jun 30, 2009 10:46 PM EDT reply actions

no roster is already full. um ok sure he can contribute however were not going to sign him 4 only one year. and the more talent we have a higher pick we are going to have next year. i wanna b in the top 3 next years draft to get wall or favors.

@Chris2

“I meant to say, did Hassell pick up his option?”

It was a team option that was picked up.

by aymesq on Jun 30, 2009 11:20 PM EDT reply actions

If they’re serious about having enough cap room to sign two max FAs, committing a midlevel salary running through 2010 makes it hard. But not impossible. It would mean renouncing not only Boone and SWAT (which is a given at this point), but probably also Yi, and cutting Najera and Dooling (whose contracts aren’t fully guaranteed). Najera and Dooling might have to be goners anyway, so to me signing Bass would be evidence they’ve lost faith in Yi.

by essrog on Jun 30, 2009 11:57 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe they’ll trade 2 NETS either Boone &/or Sean &/0r Rafer so they can pay him $5M. Now that will give us a solid bench.

by JuliusIrving on Jun 30, 2009 11:58 PM EDT reply actions

PLease D O N T get BASS. But then again, chances are front office tight wads are with me and the fact that we dont have a roster spot. Unless of course we S&T YI which I again doubt coz of the outside bling he gets for RAAAATTTTTT.

Just let Brook Develop Nicely as a passing dudes for all these ball hogs. If Brook gets 3 touches minimum per possesion and/or 2 reposts at least, I will be happy. Its all about Brook now, the Future hinges on him.

I LOVE TO SEE Devin Harris Traded FOR RUBIO and let him stay for 1 yr in Spain and the NETS to stink and Brook be an allstar on a crappy tem because of stats and we get 4 FIRST ROUND LOTTERY PICKS 2010 batch (Rubio being on a rookie contract then together with the NETS, DALLAS and GS pick(coz they will be great and be in playoff contention at least due to AMARE, Curry and less injuries).

2010 Lineup

NETS and DAllas (Lottery pick top 10)

GS Warriors(14th pick)

Ricky Rubio(rookie yr) (JKIDD MArbury trade similarities)

Nets 2nd rd pick

Plus CDR DOOLING NAJERA, Brook, TWill, CLee, and CB4.

TRADE Harris NOW for RUBIO and expiring contracts coz we will stink anyway with Him and his ME first marbury clone attitude.

Dont Stop Now KiKi Thorn coz you wont smell the playoffs by February the least with these linup. GUT it completely.

@Sebastian
Nice story on Brandon Bass.

Mark Cuban is busy trying to resign Kidd and may let Bass go.

I just hope Cuban would be willing to take players like Alston and SWAT from Nets, so our roster can be manageable.
Cuban could still be vengeful over losing Harris, as he showed by taking Diop from Nets.

This is why Nets need a plan B. What do you think about Ike Diogu?

by jerry25 on Jul 1, 2009 1:31 AM EDT reply actions

Bring Bass on board. Of course we could have used him 2 years ago when we still had an NBA caliber team.

by Isaac on Jul 1, 2009 3:04 AM EDT reply actions

Bass is not coming. Yi is the PF for 40 minutes because the Chinese and their money demand it. RA was shipped out to remove the competition, they are not paying to bring in more.

by Tom F on Jul 1, 2009 7:15 AM EDT reply actions

Well obviously if we try to pursue him we will let go of another player, or make a 2 for one deal. The roster is to be cut down to 13, or at least that is a goal of Torn. Moves will be made, anyone who’s name isn’t Devin, Brook, Lee, Terrence, Douglas-Roberts(lol), or Yi could be out of NJ.

by jerrod on Jul 1, 2009 9:02 AM EDT reply actions

Swat is better than Bass

by libigman on Jul 1, 2009 9:34 AM EDT reply actions

Swat is better than Bass….Right LOL!!

by Sherlock on Jul 1, 2009 9:49 AM EDT reply actions

Nets will not make this move. We have too many players on contract now. What I see happening is a trade coming down at some point this summer. I think the Nets will ultimately look to get Bosh from Toronto either in the summer or at the deadline. We probably have the most assets of any team to make this happen. And believe it or not – Yi and Simmons plus a pick will be the centerpiece for this deal. And if the Bosh/Lebron rumors are correct…

But until the lawsuits with Brooklyn get sorted out – which then opens door for Viola or the Russian to buy the team – we will not see anything done.

Right now the most important thing in the Nets plans has to be Brooklyn getting done. After construction starts – all the pieces will fall into place.

For now be happy with a young core of Brook, DH, CDR, Lee and Williams (Terrence). And I am still hopeful of good things from Yi and Swat this season – and if I am in front office I would resign Boone next season – he is a decent back up center and will come cheap. Unless you want to use a 1st round pick next year on a center (Solomon Alabai – FSU)

by Ryan243 on Jul 1, 2009 10:06 AM EDT reply actions

Overall I like the idea of Bass, but I’d like to give SWAT one more chance. All accounts thus far thus off season is that he’s making strides professionally and emotionally. We won’t know if any of this pays off until training camp starts.

by RD on Jul 1, 2009 11:07 AM EDT reply actions

Yes I think Swat is going to have a good year as well. I really hope we dont give up on him for a 2nd rounder.

by Ryan243 on Jul 1, 2009 11:24 AM EDT reply actions

Kings did not present Diogu with the qualifying offer, so he is a free agent. I’d like Nets to see if they can get Diogu for a one year deal with team option for the second…

by Chris2 on Jul 1, 2009 11:43 AM EDT reply actions

I am hoping Kidd -> CLE and we trade Alston for Bass although I know the odds are slim. If Kidd -> CLE, Cuban will probably sign Bibby instead.

As for Bosh, I think the Nets should offer Yi, Hassell, and Simmons and their 2011, 2013 picks and the pick they got for Marcus Williams for him. Sign him to an extension designed to leave room for a mx contract for LBJ or Melo at the 3. TOR has to know Bosh is leaving and has to be looking for the maximum value possible for him. Yi + 3 #1 picks is a very, very competitive offer and does not hurt us because a) we wd still have 3 picks over the next three years and b) we have a very young team anyway.
