Nets Exercise Option on Hayes

As expected, the Nets announced Monday morning that they have exercised the team option on Jarvis Hayes' contract for 2009-10. Hayes provided solid minutes off the bench for the Nets last season and is considered a bargain at a little more than $2 million for next season. The move gives the Nets a full roster of 15 players. Trenton Hassell has until Tuesday to exercise a $4.4 million player option.

Wow . . . I’m shocked. I guess another 20% of the front office staff can expect to lose their jobs.

Its smart to pick up his option because he is an asset as a clutch player with a bargain salary and an expiring contract. He would be valuable in a trade or as an active contributor to the team.

Dumpy – You are getting dramatic. Dumping VC was the right thing to do.

LOL, letting Hayes go just to save $2M next year would have been depressing.

Wish they could get rid of at least one of Simmons, Hassell, or Najera and replace with a legit PF.

Chris – The PF will come during the year or in the draft.
First, we need to give Yi another chance.

OMG they actually spent two million dollars!!
They probably had to fire a few ticket reps to keep Jarvis around but it was worth it

Trenton, I know some people wanted Tyler, but getting T-Will was the best Nets news since getting Brook.
JH is both a great player and a GREAT trade asset…
…it’s gonna be a good summer, thanks Rod.

Maybe Hassell will forget to pick up his option.

At least something went right today. Hayes is a solid guy. I’m glad he’s coming back.

Jarvis Hayes is a great player
I hope Hassell doesnt come back he is one of the worst players in the league and also dump Mo Agur. And sign a free agent or two.

I think everybody is becoming a little over dramatic. I think having a young nucleus of Devin, Brook, CDR, Courtney Lee and TWill is a step in the right direction. And I think that with expectations so low – Frank will be forced to play the young guys extended minutes which will be good for their development. If Sean, Josh or Yi are going to step up – this is the year to do it. It will be interesting to see how they fare.
And worst case scenario is that we have at least 1 lottery choice in 2010 (very possibly 2), an added year of development for our young core and we shed a ton of salary by this point next season. Unfortunately, much of the Nets future will be clouded by their dreams of Brooklyn, and until construction begins or is shut down for good – this team will be searching for a future identity.

Mo Ager is a free agent who is already finished with the Nets. He is probably packing for Spain as we speak.

@Kevin
Rodney Rogers did forget to exercise his option. But then he didnt have NetsDaily to remind him.

Quick, someone go to Hassell’s house and sing him lullabies and pour him warm milk until Wednesday so he’ll sleep and forget to exercise his option by tomorrow. Then again Rod Thorn is probably on it already, im sure Ratner is doing anything he can to save money.

Some of you are just plain dramatic. Of course they were going to pick up his option…come on now. I realize some of you still have a bitter taste in your mouths because of the VC trade but let it go already… everything isn’t just black and white.

All the people on this board who are bitching about the salary dumps dont understand the basics of simple business.
You dont want to spend more then you bring in. The fact that the salary dumps are also beneficial to the long term success of the team/franchise makes this move such a no brainer that I cant believe the amount of people on this board who are crying like women.

Picking up Hayes was the right thing to do. I am glad, but not surprised. I am disgusted by the Hassell option. On the open market, he’s not worth the league minimum. No one would take him, as well as no one will take Boone, Simmons or Sean. We are stuck with all four. I hope they have nice suits, as I hope they will be inactive for much of the season. LFrank better play TWILL and Hayes at the three. We don’t need to play anyone else there. AND I hope Tony Battie backs up both YI and Brook. AND I hope my hair continues it’s miracle regrowth…

Pau
Bobby Simmons has a spot on nearly every roster in the NBA. He is a solid, strong defender who shoots the three ball well. Valuable as a role player to good nba teams who have players who command attention.
I agree with the rest.

What in the world is Hassell waiting for to pick up that option? Thats about 4 million dollars more than he would be able to get on the market.
by Chris2 on Jun 29, 2009 2:15 PM EDT reply actions
why would hassell exercise his option? he would def take a paycut to be on a winning team…he is old and wants to win before he retires…
someone sign him a lullaby and pour him warm milk like TheMann said. PLEASE!

Mattsimo, Simmons does not have a spot on every roster at $11 million. He is the highest paid guy on the team now. What’s worse Vince for what he got paid or Simmons for what he gets paid. I’ll take VC any day. If Simmons is that good, we should have given him to Orlando for what we got back.
We had cap room for next year already. They now have more with no guarantee that they can get anyone to come here. Remember when the bulls had a ton of cap space and couldn’t get anyone to sign? I think it will be a long year.

The poster who I was rebuddling said that Simmons wouldnt command the vet minimum.

I like Hayes, but since he got injured while with the Wizards, he lost his speed and ability to penetrate. I hope this year he gain it back. I believe he was competing for playing time with Butler. With Carter out, I expect his three points jumpshot will be lesser. I am hoping for CDR, Alston or Terrence can provide the penetration to set up Hayes for possible three points shot. If not then Hayes needs to be more creative.

I don’t understand why they picked up Hayes’s option. Every minute that Hayes plays takes away a minute of playing time from CDR, Lee and TWill.
It’s time to play the young guys and forget about veterans like Hayes who are mediocre at best. We need to get the young guys some experience!

This was a no brainer! If we can’t have Vince anymore, then we have to keep his look alike. Maybe it will keep my girlfriend happy having Hayes on the team…..she thinks she will be seeing Vince. lol

mattsimo:
The poster “Pau” said Hassel would not command the league minimum, yet the Nets have the misfortune of having to have him on their payroll this year for over 4 mil. He was the poison pill in the Kidd/Harris deal the Nets had to take. If he was a free agent, he would not be signed by anybody, even thought he plays plays all out, his time in the league has passed.
He also said that no one would take Boone, Simmons, or Sean Williams. He’s probably a little off on Boone and Sean because they are young and relatively cheap, but nobody “wants” them. Right now, they are both dime a dozen young bigs, that could easily find themselves out of the NBA when their rookie contracts are up (particulary Sean), unless they improve. There are new young players coming into the league every year, and it’s competetive.
Simmons was once a good player. Now he is a role player, who is relatively tough, but also immobile for his position. He can shoot and pass, etc, but he is ridiculously overpaid, and if he was a free agent, he woud be a league minimum consideration for a few teams.
