ESDC Approves New Plan for Atlantic Yards

New York State's development arm, Bruce Ratner's partner in Atlantic Yards, approved changes in his plans for the project Tuesday. The ESDC certified there've been no major changes to the plan, meaning no need for new approvals. In releasing new drawings for Barclays Center, Ellerbe Becket, its new architect, estimated that the arena, which was to cost $950 million, will now have a price tag $180 million smaller.

This is absolutely disgraceful. I hope most (if not all) of the real Nets fans that have been supporting this team for the past 2-3 decades will be following me out the door if this all goes through and this pig Ratner gets his greedy wishes. He completely ruined what was the greatest era in the Nets NBA history by tearing it apart and now appears to be stealing the team from the real fans for the long run. Stern you should be ashamed of yourself – they should strip you of your Rutgers degree, you sellout.

Issac my friend,

You fail to realize that the little guys, meaning the loyal Nets fans that continued to support this team after the ownership change and despite being slapped in the face by Ratner and Yormark several times over, do not matter, for this is America. My bank account makes me matter. Bruce Ratner’s bank account makes him matter, and as you can see, it enables him to get whatever he wants. This is the land where r&b singers beat their girlfriends half to death on a public roadside and get off with probation because they have 7 figures garnering interest in the bank.

If this arena becomes reality, Ratner just has to hope that the paupers in Brooklyn can afford to pay for tickets, or even care about another basketball team other than the Knicks.

I’ve had one foot out the door for the past 3 seasons…

Sorry guys – I’m a long time Nets fan (clearly care about the team from all my comments on this site) but I am a NY’er who can not wait for them to move back to NY. I moved to Jersey 2 years ago from NY and also can not wait for property prices to stabilize so that I can sell my place and move back to NY.

So I will be gladly following them thru the tunnel. Hence I care more to see this team build for the future than try and win now.

Aside from that – not sure what the big deal is if they move to Brooklyn. You take the train from Secaucus to Penn and the subway to Atlantic Avenue – probably net travel time is only 25 min.

by Ryan243 on Jun 23, 2009 11:19 AM EDT reply actions

Ryan – the big deal is that we support the NEW JERSEY Nets for a reason. I have been going to the Meadowlands FROM Brooklyn for the better part of my 20 years as a fan so the commute has nothing to do with it. If I wanted to root for the “nearby” team I would have become a Knicks fan a long time ago (that will never happen). The Nets are “our” team, at least they were until this greedy pig came along, a guy that could care less about professional basketball or any sport for that matter. It is people like Ratner that have completely ruined my enjoyment of sports as a fan (and for many others i’m sure).

So that’s very nice for you Ryan, that you are looking forward to the proosed move. Perhaps you can at least understand (since many others on this site obviously can’t) why many of us would be so disturbed by it.

by Isaac on Jun 23, 2009 11:27 AM EDT reply actions

Its a big deal for those of us who don’t live in Secaucus.

Some of us drive an hour to izod. We don’t want to add 30 more minutes onto our commute after work to a game.

For me, I’ve always had the Nets in NJ. To me its like having a close franchise running out. So yes, that stinks for me. I’m not a Giant, Jet, Yankee, Met, Islander, Ranger or Devil fan so the nets are my local go to team.

by Trenton on Jun 23, 2009 11:53 AM EDT reply actions

our Nets will not be leaving Jersey…I will never travel to Brooklyn (gross) to see them play and neither will any of my friends. I do 1/2 season tickets and that will stop completely if they ever moved which I dont think will happen..

The next presale for the Newark Exhibition Series has started. The presale code is “prucenter”. Regular ticket sales start on Friday at 11 am. If you want to, buy tickets at the Prudential Center Box Office on Friday and then at 6:30, the Devils are having their Draft Party in the arena so you can check out the arena too. For more info on the Draft Party visit www.newjerseydevils.com.
The box office is on the corner of Edison Place and Mulberry Street in Newark next to the PNC Tower.
If you guys have any questions on the arena, seating, the surrounding area, or the draft party, feel free to ask me any questions you may have.

At Rock07 – I would love to go to these preseason games. But if Ratner and his cronies have already broken ground by October, these games will obviously mean nothing which takes all the steam out of the Nets finally getting to play in the building where they should permanently be calling home.

by Isaac on Jun 23, 2009 1:10 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, Issac is right…if they start breaking ground what would be the point? I’ve never gone to a preseason game as is, if there was a chance the team wouldn’t be moving to that cess pool then i would definitely buy tix to support the team so they can see that fans would come to the Pru center

I will still love my team but i find it hard to see myself spending a dime on them if they rip them out of this state. As long as they are in NJ regardless of my feelings for that corporate scum Ratner I will come out and support them as I have done every year non stop since 1992, but once they move all bets are off, I’m not going to be driving in rush hour traffic all the way to Brooklyn.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jun 23, 2009 5:05 PM EDT reply actions

I intend on going tomorrow and possibly stating why the MTA should not give to Ratner.

by Tal Barzilai on Jun 23, 2009 5:15 PM EDT reply actions

I understand everyone’s position.

And I hope you can understand why many Nets fans are happy they are staying in the NY area and even happier that they will now have a financial future.

by David on Jun 23, 2009 5:30 PM EDT reply actions

Another question…should NYers have been upset about the Jets and Giants moving to NJ? I just don’t get this NJ inferiority complex thing.

by David on Jun 23, 2009 5:32 PM EDT reply actions

I love how a guy from Brooklyn is preaching to everyone about New Jersey pride. Can’t you plants cook up a better story than this?

by blah on Jun 23, 2009 6:31 PM EDT reply actions

As for me, no I wont be walking out on the Nets like the supposed 20 year fans. I’ll be enjoying a nice Jones soda sitting in my lower seats in a brand spankin new arena in the heart of New York watching a big market team play. Thank you very much. I love this.

No sleep till Brooklyn baby! Eat it Goldscum.

“I just don’t get this NJ inferiority complex thing.”

Oh stop…………. Your jabs at NJ say more about you than the Garden State.

Why is it a sin that NJ wants to retain something of its own?
And their are plenty of NY’ers that don’t like the fact that the Jets & Giants play in NJ. Who are you kidding?
If the Westside stadium came to fruition for the Jets, scores of NY’ers would have switched allegiances. Please believe that.

by openhead on Jun 23, 2009 7:21 PM EDT reply actions

I am a NY’er and I haved never cared enough to be upset that the Jets or Giants play in NJ. If I want to go to a game, I drive and I would have derived no more pleasure from the Giants Super Bowl wins if they played in Yankee stadium versus the Meadowlands.

Truthfully, I thnk you guys are being childish.

by David on Jun 23, 2009 7:36 PM EDT reply actions

If they can actually get a shovel in the ground I have absolutely no problem whatsoever in going to a new arena that the Nets OWN. The key word is OWN, Concessions OWN, Parking OWN, auxilaries OWN. Everyone and anyone can come into the new arena and rent. Owning will reflect in my season tickets which I pay to OWN each season. Part of the penalty I pay as a true fan is that I pay the guy who rents currently. For me my season tickets are an investment and I want that investment to reflect a world class arena and top flight experience. Its not emotional for me as to how I spend my money. I get emotional sitting courtside and watching my team play.

by BigEd on Jun 23, 2009 7:52 PM EDT reply actions

By the way I live in NEW JERSEY and can clearly understand why the rock is NOT a good business model in presenting entertainment. You must OWN to make money.

by BigEd on Jun 23, 2009 7:54 PM EDT reply actions

BigEd – Most of these NJ fans would rather be a lottery team in NJ than a contender in Brooklyn. It is truly baffling.

by David on Jun 23, 2009 8:02 PM EDT reply actions

“Truthfully, I thnk you guys are being childish.”

Nah……. You just want NJ to be good little boys like Southern Conn, Long Island & Westchester. To shut our mouths & be grateful.
Why is it a crime for NJ to have ambition & strive for something greater? I know you could care less about Newark picking itself up from the ashes & reinventing itself, but plenty of people in NJ do. The Nets could help with that process.

“Most of these NJ fans would rather be a lottery team in NJ than a contender in Brooklyn. It is truly baffling.”

If you are going to regurgitate the same catch phrase in diff posts, I will regurgitate the same response.

Equating BK & championships only makes me chuckle. Ratner cares about real estate, not titles. That arena will be a cash cow, no matter what the Nets record is. He is & will continue to be the Donald Sterling of the East Coast. The Nets will be the NY Clippers.
The Nets have a better chance of winning if Ratner sells the team. Regardless if it’s Kansas City, Seattle, Vegas or New Jersey.
Don’t fool yourself into thinking this potential move is about winning or the ability to attract free agents. You see how that is working out for NY’s current team.
It does not matter if the Knicks win or not. The attendance will always be at the top of the league. That is what Ratner is banking on.

by openhead on Jun 23, 2009 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

Brooklyn means financial flexibilitY via stadium ownership. The Nets will not have that in NJ and therefore have a better chance to be contenders in Brooklyn.

Is that so complicated?

by David on Jun 23, 2009 8:30 PM EDT reply actions

“Brooklyn means financial flexibilitY via stadium ownership. The Nets will not have that in NJ and therefore have a better chance to be contenders in Brooklyn.”

You MUST stop these knowingly false assumptions.
It is a GIVEN that if Brooklyn falls through, Ratner WILL sell the Nets. He’s not a sports owner, just a developer.
You might need to catch up on your homework, but everyone knows that we are working off the assumption of the devils ownership buying the Nets if they move to Newark.
Must we go through this for the 1000th time? Keep up…….

by openhead on Jun 23, 2009 8:41 PM EDT reply actions

Oh okay. Brooklyn is going to fall through, the Devils owner will find 300 million to buy the Nets, they will move to a sold out Rock and be ready to pay the luxury tax.

@Ryan243,

It’s a good half hour on the 2/3 from Penn Station to Atlantic Avenue/Pacific Street/Barclays Center, let alone the trip to Penn Station from Joisey.

When did I say BK was dead?
When??????????

This Arena will not get done and it shouldn’t. This is an expensive project that New York doesn’t need. Brett Ratner will sell this team and it’ll either move to Newark, New Jersey or Kansas City, Missouri. Maybe… Vancouver as a complete dark-horse. But I just don’t see the Nets leaving New Jersey when a new arena exists right there.

by kombayn on Jun 24, 2009 2:22 AM EDT reply actions

Listen up good Blah (nice name). I AM NOT A PLANT. I am a real Nets fan who happens to think Ratner is the worst thing ever to happen to this franchise (and that is saying a lot) – I have asked you time and time again to ask me anything about the Nets over the last 20 years – a period of time in which I have been a diehard fan.

@ openhead…It does not matter if the Knicks win or not. The attendance will always be at the top of the league. That is what Ratner is banking on.

THATS EXACTLY THE IDEA!!!!!! Thats what an owner does figures out a way to bring the entertainment and make money..duh???
Have you ever heard of the H.A. L. T. principle.

by BigEd on Jun 24, 2009 5:37 AM EDT reply actions

Imo that some posting on this site have a couple of major misconceptions.

1) Owning an arena brings the Nets financial flexibility and will allow the Nets to spend more on salaries.

How many of you took on a mortgage that was more than you could really afford because you wanted a nice home to live in? The result is that you have no money to go out or buy new clothes for a long time, Eventually, you earn more money and you are ok. This will be the Nets except that ticket prices and sponsorships for the NBA are pretty much maxed out right now and will probably decline for the near future.

2). The Nets will prosper because they will control 220 open dates.

Whoever thinks that is obviously a marketing guy. I am an accountant, This dog doesn’t even come close to hunting. I rememer a link here that said the Izod makes about $50k per event compared to about $35-40k for Nets/Devils. Great. That means about $11M for those open dates. I would expect the principal and interest on the loan for the arena to be over $40M annually. Or the Nets could rent the rock for $40K per game.
