Around SBN: Lakers Should Trade Andrew Bynum So He Doesn't Go To Waste

Lopez: "This is Just the Beginning"

Brook Lopez sat down near the end of the season with SLAM's Konate Primus to talk about his experience as a rookie. Lopez spoke about how getting picked by the Nets was not what he expected, but "It turned out to be one of the better opportunities because I got a lot of minutes, which translated into a chance to show my game." Lopez is grateful to both his coaches and Nets fans, "but this is just the beginning."

T.H. @ #11 – no thanks. We can do much better.

WOW
MY BROOK LOPEZ JERSEY CAME IN THE MAIL TO DAY!!!!
Brook Lopez is the truth!!

and only BIGMEN win championships!! and MJ Dwight Howard?

Man dont it smell like gravy coming to NJ??

Can you imagine Lebron James in a NJ arena?

I think maybe a sign and trade with VC and a couple of pieces to Cleveland could get Lebron to NJ.
Cleveland wont let him go
And Lebron dont wanna stay

I wouldnt mind tyler hansbrough..
4 years at UNC makes for a high Bball IQ
he is tough inside, nice turn around jumper and a 15 footer
He plays tough D and is a winner!
Winners mentality counts
Ty got better and bigger every year in college
id take him over blair honestly.. long term
blairs offense is not polished and 2 knee surgeries knocks him off of thorns list

Great guy and great pick for us! The sky is the limit! Lets compare him to Dwight Howard.

Dwight Howard/ Brook Lopez

Shooting: Brook
Free-throw shooting: Brook (he is great, more like a guard)
Post moves: Brook
Intangibles: Brook
Defense: Dwight
Blocks: Toss up
Jumping ability: Dwight
Desire to get better: Toss up
Speed: Dwight
Rebounding: Dwight

Conclusion: There is no reason Brook can’t become a better all around player than Dwight Howard. We just have to give him the ball down low more often so he can gain confidence. Brook should improve on rebounding, defense and continue to improve on moves around the basket. After watching Dwight Howard, he has almost no post moves, can’t shoot and is horrible at the line. BUT, he is still dominant because of his size and athleticism. This translates into defense, rebounding and dunking. As shown, in the conference finals, with a guy that can dominate the middle the Magic have a team that can go deep into the playoffs for the next 10-12 years. We can finally say the same for the NETS! For decades we were always searching for that player in the middle. We lost to Shaq and Duncan in their primes. We all know how those series turned out. We were out matched mainly because of our lack of size. We have to build around Brook. Make him the focus of our team and then we can enjoy long playoff runs and perhaps finally a NETS championship. Brook must keep his desire to be the best and get better every year like Howard has. So far he is doing and saying the right things to become elite in this league. LETS GO NETS!

TRUNETSFAN WHO DO U THINK WE SHOULD TAKE??
damn near any one u pick is just as good as “T” 4 yrs exp,
heart, heart, and a winning mentality

by mike on Jun 2, 2009 10:15 PM EDT reply actions

That funny guy on TV, George Lopez. Is that Brooks father?

by Tom F on Jun 2, 2009 10:53 PM EDT reply actions

I’d have to agree with truenetsfan. There have been many college stars, “winners” with many intangibles, who put up great college numbers, in great winning programs, but flopped in the NBA.

Anyone remember tyus edney? ED OBANNON?

The problem is that the NBA has become a league where athleticism and mismatch potential are much higher valued than what program someone went to or how many NCAA championships they won. Not to say it doesn’t matter, but thats the sole reason why guys named Saer Sene and Patrick O’Bryant were lotto picks, because of their potential.

I know some fool will say…BUT there are many people who were picked high that flopped regardless of school….sure, my point is that GMs are looking for potential in the NBA draft and thats the reason why TH is currently slated in most mocks as a late 1st rounder.

TH is good. He’s not really great at anything. He’s good at scoring in the low post, decent rebounder. Is he a 4? at 6’9" sure he can be a 4, but is he athletic or quick enough to guard the starting 4s in the NBA? He averaged .4 blocks/game last year, can he be a presence in the paint on D? He could play the 3, but those guys are even quicker.

TH will be a good role player, perhaps a Linus Kleiza type, but with a better post game, but I don’t see him much more than that. At our pick, we should chose BPA, and there will be players better than him with a higher potential ceiling or that will really fill in one of our needs.

Yes Justin
I agree!
I would say Brook may be further along offensively and has more upside with the ball in in his hands over DHoward.
Orlando had Ewing to coach Howard.
NJ needs to hire a coach that will groom BLO
wheres hakeem olajuwon?
David robinson?

Justin NJ
After reading what your comment, the NETS could be the magic, they have a young big who can play D and work under and around the basket. They have (potentially), sweet shooting big men in anderson and yi (daresay) a slashing quick point guard in Harris, and VC is our clutch swingman who can handle the ball.
By no stretch of the imagination am I saying the NETS are as good as the Magic, but their roster does kind of look lie theirs, despite the fact that our young guys aren’t that good. Maybe Rod, Kiki, and Frank should have a little conference while watching the magic in the finals, if they didn’t watch them in the ECF.

Go Brook I’m getting his jersey as soon as i got enough cash

by justin on Jun 2, 2009 11:15 PM EDT reply actions

@ Justin NJ…
are u serious??? blocks between the two is a toss up and intangibles?
favoritism…

by netsball on Jun 2, 2009 11:15 PM EDT reply actions

He’ll go no lower than 16 and be a steal. Comparing him to O’Bannon is silly. O’Bannon was a tweener with a bum knee and Tyus Edney is 5’9".

Blocks are a toss up!

Dwight Howard Stats:

FG% FT% RPG APG BPG PPG
04-05* 0.520 0.671 10.0 0.9 1.7 12.0
05-06 0.531 0.595 12.5 1.5 1.4 15.8
06-07 0.603 0.586 12.3 1.9 1.9 17.6
07-08 0.599 0.590 14.2 1.3 2.2 20.7
08-09 0.572 0.594 13.8 1.4 2.9 20.6
Career 0.568 0.601 12.5 1.4 2.0 17.3

BrooK Lopez
       0.531 0.793 8.1 1.0 1.8 13.0

And that is with our offense running through Devin and Vince.

by JustinNJ on Jun 3, 2009 12:11 AM EDT reply actions

I think TH will be a good role player in the NBA. If Clark, Holliday or DeRozan are either not available or the Nets don’t want them – I would like to see the Nets trade the 11th pick to move back in the draft and potentially pick up 2 picks. You could take a flier on guys like TH, TWill, Sam Young, Jodie Meeks, Toney Douglas. Even if we pay one guy to basically be a practice player all year or send him to the D League – at least we are really building/developing our bench for the future. You can not win without a top tier bench.

Having any mix of those 4 players, combined with Ryan Anderson, Dooling and CDR for the future could be really really big.

by Ryan243 on Jun 3, 2009 9:28 AM EDT reply actions

Clearly LFRANK needs to run plays for this guy. He also needs to average 35 minutes a game. I’d like to see his scoring and rebounding go up 20% this year. But he and Dwight are very different players and have very different bodies. NOBODY in the league goes to the rim quite like Dwight! Devin and VC need to take fewer and better shots, and raise their shooing percentages and running more plays for Brook is the answer to how to do that this year. GO BROOK! GO NETS! AI:GO AWAY!

by Paul Erstein on Jun 3, 2009 9:30 AM EDT reply actions

I’m not sure that TH can defend on the NBA level though, but he’d be a great hustle player for this team…

we need a sure bet on defense though. We have plenty of offense

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jun 3, 2009 9:39 AM EDT reply actions

And Brook should be the #1 option on offense next season. The Nets are a halfcourt team, we need to be run an inside-out offense a solid % of the time, not outside-in.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jun 3, 2009 9:45 AM EDT reply actions

@JustinNJ
2.9 blocks vs 1.8 blocks isnt exactly a toss-up. Dwight is clearly ahead in that category.

by TheMann on Jun 3, 2009 9:56 AM EDT reply actions

brook is the man…by far my favorite net and i might get his jersey.

by Andy on Jun 3, 2009 11:36 AM EDT reply actions

@TheMann

For the blocked shots stats, compare Dwight’s rookie year numbers to Brook’s, not his 08-09 stats, and then you get a more even comparison: 1.7 v. 1.8. Remeber Brook was a rookie and Dwight was in his 5th year (not to mention having all the added experience of Olympic games under his belt). Give Brook 4 more seasons and we’ll then see if he can compete with Dwight’s numbers in his 5th season.

by Frank on Jun 3, 2009 12:36 PM EDT reply actions

@Frank
Oh he posted all of the seasons for Dwight so I thought he meant this year, my mistake.

by TheMann on Jun 3, 2009 2:19 PM EDT reply actions

Thanks Frank for explaining. Sorry it was not clear.
