We Didn't Start the Fire...But You Don't See Us with Hoses Either!

The off-season really doesn't heat up til the Finals are over. Still, we stoke the fires this week with a potpurri of kindling. We wonder when we'll hear about MIP and invites to Team USA's summer camp, lament Boki Nachbar's season of discontent, have fun with a Carlos Boozer rumor, measure who's more disappointing: Yi Jianlian or Greg Oden, pick a draft sleeper, get cranky about Eddie House and wish Eddie Najera well.

The Yi to Oden comparison is ridiculous on so many fronts. Portland is a quality team and Oden played meaningful minutes and had to compete for shots on a balanced team. He is a rookie and Yi is not, yet everyone is under this illusion that he, Yi, is a rookie. He showed ZERO growth from year one to year two. If Oden does the same, Portlandt will be concerned and we would all consider him overrated, even a bust. But the biggest farce is this: Oden plays defense! In fact, Oden is a difference maker on defense and Yi will never be confused with that! Yi is a negative on D. Boozer, please. I like his quote: Yi is not a starter in the NBA: wake up KikiThorn (I think they know this, but are in denial or in trade mode – wishful thinking). We all hope, but he is not a starter, not on a good team.

The difference between Yi and Oden is on D. Also Oden comes off a serious injury as a rookie. Their disappointment might be compareable but Odens future is much brighter. Luv for the Nets to get Boozer. The only problem is he is not available until after the draft unless we work it out with Port. before and with the PF position being our biggest need, If we don’t draft a PF or land him, we still have the problem. Next year to go with Lopez, Boozer, Nachbar, VC & DH would be great. Imo Dooling is better than House.

Oden was a bigger disappointment than Yi, period. As noted in the item, there were different levels of expectations. They were both frustrating to their teams’ fans and management.
As for Oden’s vaunted defense, where does that 8.7 personals per 48 minutes number fit into his rep as a great defender? Lopez owned him.

Net Income is having an off day. Oden and Yi??? Why compare? Oden blocks shots and changes shots. Yi does not. Oden rebounds. Yi sometimes. Oden went to the free throw line 100 more times than Yi. Oden has an impact on the game. He is physical and puts other teams’ bigs in foul trouble. Yi does not do that. He is a feather inside. Yi shoots 38 % Oden 56% Rebound, fouls, free throw are all hustle and physical stats. Oden has that kind of impact. Yi does not. Oden took far fewer shots, because of his team, but he had a bigger impact than Yi. Going forward, it’s a no-brainer. Yi has not shown improvement. I would think Oden will improve. Even still, right now, Oden has more impact on BOTH ends of the floor. Potential? Well they are both big, which is good, but Oden uses his size.

I wish people would read what I wrote rather than assign their own biases. I’m not having an off-day. People have reading comprehension issues. Is Yi as big as a disappointment as Oden? No, period. Oden was supposed to be Bill Russell. He isn’t Brook Lopez.

And Yi was the next Dirk. LOL. Oden on his worst day last year was better than Yi, who was the biggest bust in the NBA. PEROID. Yi was a bust, is a bust and will always be a bust. PEROID. This guy is such a fraud they can’t even be honest about his age. Like he played for China at 15. Do they keep a stat for how many times a player looked at his defender, saw a joke and blew by him. I wonder what Yi’s # over 48 minutes was as a defender. Lets be clear. When Thorn talks about bad D and rebounding which led us to the lottery, Yi’s picture should be right next to the statement. Portand didn’t have that problem. It’s typical of some of the posters on this board. Just delusional. PEROID!

I spit my coffee out reading the Oden and Yi comparison. Keep the good stuff coming Net Income, this one was almost as great as your Yi and Anderson comparison a few weeks back.

I think I kind of understand where Net Income was going with that comparison, but it’s a bit of a stretch because expectations changed for Oden. Oden was compared to Bill Russell and was supposed to be a game changing, dominant, franchise Center. Yi was compared to Dirk Nowitski and was supposed to be able to nail jumpers inside and out and have a finesse game that would make him a potent scorer. Once Oden had to have microfracture surgery the expectations that he would be the dominant, game changing Center had to be delayed. Even the best players can take between one year to a year and a half to fully recover from that type of surgery, let alone a rookie. Yi had no such surgery, therefore the expectations for Yi never changed. Yi was not a rookie this year and did not show improvement from last year to this year. I wouldnt label Oden a bust or a disappointment, because he’s coming into his rookie year after having micro. surgery. No one could really expect him to come in and blow away the competition when he’s still learning the NBA and trying to get his confidence and body back at the same time. Sure ESPN and the NBA hyped up his return by mentioning he could be a candidate for rookie of the year, but anyone who follows basketball and has heard of his type of surgery knew he had no chance at it. Yi is the bigger disappointment to me, its almost as if he learned nothing from his rookie season and as badly as he wanted the NY media spotlight, he didnt deliver when he got it.

I haven’t read net income’s page yet…and i don’t really need to…
Oden was labeled a savior for the blazers…a #1 pick…there’s a huge talent gap most years between #1 and #6….when you a #1 pick your supposed to be a franchise player…a superstar….
Oden was hyped from day 1…
Yi wasn’t really hyped at all except some draft experts said he could play like Dirk one of these days.
Yi seems like a bigger bust cause he plays on our team.
but Oden is clearly a gigantic flop as of this moment….
your supposed to be dominant not solid when you a #1 pick big man….
He’s almost as big of a bust than the Kandiman…
Listen, when a #10 pick (lopez) had a better rookie year and you can’t even beat out a 2nd string center for a starting spot….you’ve got problems..
anyway with all that said…it’s too early to call these 2 players busts…eventhough i give Yi more of a shot at being a bust…but for now if there is one…Oden is a bigger bust than Yi.
