Did McGrady Scuttle Carter Trade to Houston?

HoopsWorld reports a trade sending Vince Carter to Houston for Tracy McGrady was scuttled by T-Mac at the trade deadline. According to the site, Nets players believed VC was about to join the Rockets but then "McGrady got wind of the trade and immediately announced he would be having season-ending knee surgery." McGrady is owed $22.5 million next season. Carter is owed $37.6 million over three.

Rockets found out during the season that T-mac had been playing with missing cartilage in his knee for quite some time and were trying to pull a fast one on us. Maybe T-mac made his announcement to shut down trade talks but there was no way he would make it past the Nets physical and the trade would surely be rescinded. T-mac is damaged goods, and has pretty much done nothing to contribute to his team’s success. Why people still value him over VC is beyond me. You match up their supporting crews against one another and it’s blowout city, so he clearly has had the advantage.

On a side note, I understand why Rockets were shopping T-mac as they were hoping to be rid of his curse :)

i do believe that this trade rumor was legit but everything else this guy is saying seems far fetched. it’s pretty much bs.

tmac is awful! happy that didn’t happen…couldn’t deal with that

by ChrisGNetfan on Apr 7, 2009 1:34 AM EDT reply actions

I am glad that the Nets didn’t give up VC at all this season, and they should keep in durring next season as well.

by Tal Barzilai on Apr 7, 2009 1:56 AM EDT reply actions

t-mac would’ve given us the same mess VC has given us the past 4 years

by fredd on Apr 7, 2009 2:15 AM EDT reply actions

at least tmac always gives 100%. and hes not injured…those are huge problems with vince. he always bails on the team, he never tries, and hes always injured! man….we shouldve done this…why did tmac have to get injured.

the thing is, vince this year declined so much its scary. he used to be elite, but this year, you can never count on him and hes putting up bad numbers.

but if we had tmac? man, tmac is a beast! he dunks all the time and hes such a lethal scorer. i think hes better than kobe.

man…what could have been…

by Max on Apr 7, 2009 2:44 AM EDT reply actions

what do you mean by tmac not being injured? lol

by Cliffy on Apr 7, 2009 2:49 AM EDT reply actions

I think this report is probably true considering the strength of rumours around the deadline of the Nets parting with VC. And if you go back and look at the Rockets news it was very bizrre how T-Mac came out and said he was having season ending surgery without the permission of the Rockets franchise who would have stage managed the announcement. T-Mac clearly made the announcement himself to scuttle any possible talk of him being traded at the deadline.

by addicitive on Apr 7, 2009 4:24 AM EDT reply actions

TMac and not injured should never be in the same sentence. You’re thinking Orlando TMac, I hate to break it to you, but TMac’s a star no longer. He’ll be in veteran piggybacking for a ring mode sooner that you might think

The Nets reportedly didnt like Houston’s offer of T-Mac for VC and Josh Boone…that was reported on February 17.

http://www.netsdaily.com/?p=7403

T-Mac announced his decision to fold the season that same day, but the Rockets claim they didnt know about it til February 18.

i wouldnt be surprised if we tried for this trade again in the summer. not to get better as a team, but to shed money during this time. even though tmac is always injured he is a household name so maybe…maybe people will come to see him and see what suit he is wearing.

i thought it would make a lot of sense for houston to get vc. ya his contract is longer, but he plays and that alone is a big upgrade from tmac. vc and yao i think would be able to do some nice damage in the west with that supporting cast. so i would expect vc-to-houston rumors again in the summer

by xcalibur on Apr 7, 2009 8:08 AM EDT reply actions

Max, just look at the statistics. TMac’s games played over the last 3 seasons looks like this:

2009: 35
2008: 66
2007: 71

Vince Carter’s games played over the last 3 seasons:

2009: 76 (not including the last 5 games)
2008: 76
2007: 82

Vince Carter might be injured but he always leaves it out there on the court. On the other hand, TMac gets injured and he leaves it all out on the bench. So you might want to check your stats before making a bogus comment like you did.

by Tim on Apr 7, 2009 8:09 AM EDT reply actions

im glad t mac did that, he’s done. i think that he cant play on the super star level anymore, and not becuase of talent, but because he cant stay healthy. even back when he was in his prime, he was alsways getting injured. Even tho he is a more talented player then vince, t mac cant stay healthy and thats his achiles heel

by Jared on Apr 7, 2009 8:18 AM EDT reply actions

Ya but most of you forget that T-mac has an ego and plays entirely different than VC. I don’t think he would do well here, as he would turn out to be disgruntled star the moment he hears he is heading to the swamp, for his cousin no less. VC-YAO-ARTEST? Sick! But I would much rather prefer VC to SA, and maybe they’ll do it seeing as how Ginobili has been shut down and has had ankle problems since last year.

by NateDD on Apr 7, 2009 8:22 AM EDT reply actions

As a big time Vince Carter fan…I don’t want to see the final few years of his career wasted in New Jersey. I love watching him as a Net, but for VC’s sake I hope he gets moved to a team like Houston or SA where he can compete deep in the playoffs. Houston is the deal fit for him and I hope we can see a move so that this great player can compete for a championship for the remainder of his career instead of an 8th spot.

@ Maax

On VC: “he always bails on the team, he never tries, and hes always injured!”

Are you watching old Raptors footage or something? VC has been nothing but a class act this year and TMac is “injured” significantly significantly more than VC. Let’s stop the hate because Vince has really done a stand up job.

I agree with xcalibur, unfortunately. I have visions of the Nets trading VC for nothing more than salary cap that will yield absolutely nothing productive in the summer of 2010.

“Max Says:

at least tmac always gives 100%."

Hilarious. You’ve obviously never seen Tracy McGrady play basketball at all.

Its sickening to see a class act like Carter even mentioned in the same breath with his cousin, who could care less about basketball or his teammates. Carter plays and does what he can, no he’s not like Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan, he is who he is, but to compare him to McGrady who hasn played 90% of a season in god knows how long and has quit on both Orlando and Houston is a joke.

T Mac’s career is finished. His knee is messed up, can’t explode to the basket, and has become nothing more than a stationary jump shooter who hasn’t adapted his game to his declining physical ability(whereas Carter has, tenfold and is still averaging all star level numbers at the age of 32) and from the looks of when I saw him last, he let his body deteriorate along with his game. The Nets obviously know this as well, and they were doing this as a salary dump move instead of a move to improve the team…I for one, i’m glad he pulled that shady move to shut down the season….you don’t need that kind of ‘professional’ around these kids.

by SJ15 on Apr 7, 2009 10:34 AM EDT reply actions

I actually wouldn’t mind seeing Vc in Houston, he never really had a big man to help him. Kobe, Lebron, Dwade or other stars in the league always had the dominate center. It would be been nice to see VC have that since is to the end of his career. Tmac is a NO, NO though. I perfer Landry.

by seeker on Apr 7, 2009 10:42 AM EDT reply actions

I wouldn’t wish another near death experience for Landry

by NateDD on Apr 7, 2009 11:23 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t mind VC going to houston as long as we get artest or battier and von wafer. TMac is a selfish player he could have stayed in toronto with Vc and that team would have been great.I don’t want TMac in NJ. His days of scoriung 30 a game are gone and with knee surgery his game is limited.

by djheavyduty on Apr 7, 2009 11:39 AM EDT reply actions

LOL @ wanting Artest.

by Larry Brown on Apr 7, 2009 11:45 AM EDT reply actions

Why not artest? He would be close to home and away from kobe and would give nj toughness

Max’s sarcasm didn’t register, when i responded it was 9:40am and i hadnt had my first cup of joe

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Apr 7, 2009 12:56 PM EDT reply actions

McGrady could care less about the media and what others think of him. He challenge the blob Charles Barkley on TV. Do you think Carter would confront someone openly? I happen to think that Carter has had a better career over McGrady also. Because McGrady has been injured for thwe last 3 or 4 years. It’s over for him in my opinion.

Having Carter over McGrady at this stage of their careers is a NO-Brainer.

by MJT on Apr 7, 2009 1:05 PM EDT reply actions

There is big difference between VC and T-Mac. At least VC shows he still has the skills to still go by being half-man half-amazing, while T-Mac is starting to show age. I am glad that the trade didn’t happen. I even hope that VC does stay with the Nets until 2012, because they will probably need him more than ever.

by Tal Barzilai on Apr 7, 2009 2:02 PM EDT reply actions

lol yeah…i was being sarcastic. i was imitating the tmac fans i talk to sometimes who ACTUALLY BELIEVE what I say. It’s ridiculous. NOBODY outside of nets fans watch VC play…they think hes always injured.

by Max on Apr 7, 2009 2:45 PM EDT reply actions

lol Max everyone was ganging up on you when your the biggest VC fan out of everyone.

It’s sad to see that Vince Carter will be known to others as injury prone when no one else but Net fans appreciate Carter for how he’s not injury prone and how he’s on a different level than his cousin.

by R.M. on Apr 7, 2009 2:59 PM EDT reply actions

Notice Carmelo also had a heart attack when his name was mentioned in NJ rumors. This is just another example of 2010 being a pipe dream. Almost no one really wants to play for NJ unless they have no choice and are locked in a contract already, or they just plain hate their team and wanna go ANYWHERE. No 2010 free agent who actually has a CHOICE on where he ends up is gonna wanna play for NJ unless there’s nothing left. We need to make moves to improve the team for the upcoming season, not a season where we wish LeBron or D Wade or anyone else will come be our savior.

by TheMann on Apr 7, 2009 4:12 PM EDT reply actions

you guys can go on and knock V.C cause you want him to be your savior but you put him on that rocket team with Yao and Artest to push him then their up there in Laker land with him on the team.

Vince is a great player yet bad leader.he does his part.Let me know what you guys want from him.Do you not understand that he was a hold the fort guy this season and was held back from being the man.I know 60% was by choice. The one and only thing about V.C and its HUGHE,is that he has a knack for letting other players know they can walk all over him.Kobe,LeBron,Wade you come at them and their going to bring it to you hard and embarasse you.the nice guy stuff isnt going to get you anywhere in a league that players try to get an advantage on you.Like i said, with Vince you know what your going to get. we cannot replace his talent and as a side not the front office has assembled a team of softies that melt when it gets hot. not one hard nose player on the whole frikken team!!! Its Vince fault though.

by Zartan on Apr 7, 2009 4:17 PM EDT reply actions

Star Power of VC has dropped so much though still he gets lot of votes on All-Star ballot. Yesterday he was at the NCAAB Final and he was shpw only once just for two seconds maybe. I don’t know whether there was any other time he was shown. Imagine LBJ, Wade or Kobe in the stadium. CBS completely ignored VC and Jaimison.

by Tony on Apr 7, 2009 4:17 PM EDT reply actions

well i believe that VC is an amazing player, and he has improved over the years in character. T-mac doesnt impresss me at all, i think he needs to retire. At leats A.I still has the skills to compete, T-mac doesnt even have that anymore. He’s limited by injuries and he cannot play the game anymore.

by Theblkprince on Apr 7, 2009 5:11 PM EDT reply actions

Yi for Artest simple you know how much media attention the Rockets would get having two international chinese members. It would improve the nets and Rockets. Hopefully it would give Yi the confidence to play with Yao Ming.
