Rose Wins Rookie of the Year; Lopez Third

Derrick Rose was named Rookie of the Year in a landslide Wednesday. Although Brook Lopez had some supporters--and is generally regarded as the steal of the 2008 Draft, Rose won with 574 votes, easily outdistancing O.J. Mayo with 246 votes and Lopez with 127. Lopez received two first place votes (to Rose's 111). Neither Ryan Anderson nor Chris Douglas-Roberts received any votes. Robin Lopez got three.

Rose deserved it.

Brook had an Execellent year, Rose got to the playoffs.

Brook should look to continue to grow as a player and try to become the second best center in the East behind Dwight.

Congrats either way for the years they had last year and the years both players will have in this league.

We definitely had the steal of the draft. Lopez goes #2 if the draft was redone. Can you imagine Wade & Lopez?

i thought brook and derrick were very close and that lopez was just a victim of the prejudice against big men in the nba…but after rose’s 1st game in the playoffs he definitely deserves the roy award.

If Brook Lopez wasn’t playing for the Nets, he probably would have won it hands down.

OJ Mayo was a one-dimensional gunner in Memphis. Why the love fest? If anyone should be in 2nd over Lopez, it’s Kevin Love.

And how did Robin Lopez receive three votes? He was horrible this year.

by Larry Brown on Apr 22, 2009 3:31 PM EDT reply actions

Looking at the voting, does anyone think that the 1 second place vote for Robin Lopez was actually meant for Brook. I am a little surprised that Brook finished behind Mayo.

mayo second and no love for westbrook?

by Andy on Apr 22, 2009 4:05 PM EDT reply actions

I was surprised at the Robin Lopez vote too.

After looking at the numbers, only 63 out of 120 voters thought Brook was one of the top 3?
That means that 57 (48%) didn’t even vote for Brook which is ridiculous.

Definitely is bias against the Nets.
Everyone knows that Brook would have been selected 1 or 2 in the draft (depending on team needs), so how could 48% of voters not pick him for top 3??

Regarding Brook’s clone, Robin – I hope Thorn is trying to find a way to get him from Phoenix as its rumored that Boone is likely gone. This could be a factor in getting rid of Frank, since LF has refused to play any Bigs at PF, even in a limited role.
One possibility, is to exchange our draft pick with Phoenix so they can have one of the better guards still available around the 10th pick.

no surprise here. it feels great to have a legit 7foot franchise center getting 3rd in ROY while improve throughout the year and gaining some attention.

i cannot wait for next year simply because of brook. i hope we play through him more and start to play an inside-out game.

Lopez is a good player.. I’m a fan of him…
But his upside isn’t that grand..he’s not a franchise player..
Franchise centers don’t slip in drafts…namr 1 franchise centers that ended up slipping.
It’s to do with his potential..which isn’t that much better then what we’ve seen this year…

Look at mutombo’s rookie year..and mourning.. We’re all overrating brook right now.

We’ll see next year netsball.

Robin Lopez? Really? Somebody voted him second best rookie?

Is it possible that somebody screwed up which of the two twins is which?

by A.S. on Apr 22, 2009 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

Netsball, that’s some pretty questionable logic.

by Big Davey88 on Apr 22, 2009 5:51 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t think Lopez is going to be that good because he wears number 11. No good players have ever worn number 11.

“I don’t think Lopez is going to be that good because he wears number 11. No good players have ever worn number 11.”

What???

Isiah Thomas? Elvin Hayes? Bob McAdoo? Todd McCulloch? Chris Childs? Yinka Dare (R.I.P.)?

by A.S. on Apr 22, 2009 6:44 PM EDT reply actions

Yao Ming wears number 11

by C.J. on Apr 22, 2009 8:20 PM EDT reply actions

What people submit these votes, sports analysts? And ya there is obviously some kind of mix up with the voting if Robin actually got some love. And lol @ Dirt, that reasoning was classic.

See I think it’s not a bad point wheb I sat frabchise centers don’t slip in drafs..
That 1 year mutombo was a rookie… Stanley roberts was regarded as a frabchise center for that club..
And he was picked I think late in the lottery…
Shaq who came along the final year…no. 1. And then zo.. 2 fanchise centers picked back to back…
Teams don’t let great centers slide..

You have to realize that Brook tested poorly on some of those athletic tests at the combine. You also have to remember that the NBA Draft now vs 10 years ago is vastly different. Everyone is now concerned with potential, athleticism, etc. Think of how many guys tested out really well as major athletes over the past few years or were rumored to have massive potential who have been total disasters. The draft is an inexact science, and all these workouts and combine testing does is give the journalists and fans something to talk about for 2 months before the draft – and give teams another opportunity to mess up.

Success is measured in 5 on 5 team basketball, not how fast you move laterally or how you performed in 2 on 2 in a workout or how many reps you did at 185. Its all irrelevant at the end of the day – if you can’t play ball. Too many people forget this

What about Michael Redd?

by kevin on Apr 23, 2009 12:58 PM EDT reply actions

Kevin

Michael Redd isn’t a center nor would he be a fanchise player on any other team then the Bucks..
