Playoff Race Getting Tighter

With the Nets' loss to the Magic and the Bucks' loss to the Bulls, the Nets are 1.5 games out of the playoffs in tenth place, tied with the Bobcats. Before last night's action, John Schuhmann of NBA.com did an analysis of the six-team race for that final playoff spot . His take on the Nets: they have the toughest schedule but the best player, Vince Carter, and this is when stars shine.

Except Vince isn’t a star. Because stars are good, ya know, when it counts.

Strange logic: if we had the best player then why are we not ahead of the Bucks? While he may be the best player in Schuman’s opinion (I think Harris is better, so do the coaches), I don’t think he’s the kind of better (like Wade is, like Lebron is, like etc. etc.) that makes a difference. He is a fade away and turnover from not carrying anyone to anything. But of more importance: who has the most complete team capable of winning? My money is on Charlotte with Wallace back, and then Chicago. Our weakness at the 3 and 4 will be our downfall.

Schumann is right, no question about it.
I think we can make the playoffs.

by Andrés on Mar 7, 2009 10:10 AM EST reply actions

As Schumann said in his last ranking, VC has carried this team to the playoffs before, and could do it again. Remember 2004-05, Nets were garbage when VC came in, he lead them to the playoffs with unbelievable performances, with RJ out (injured), Nets didnt even dream of the playoffs before he arrived, remember 2006-07, Nets in serious trouble, Kidd and Carter took over in the last month and a half to get into the playoffs, Carter playing at an incredible level of play, including a historic triple-double against the Wizards, the guy avaeraged something like 30-8-6 in the last 3 weeks, when the Nets came from behind to steal the 6th seed when a couple of months ago it seemed they were done. Remember 2005-06 when he and Kidd lead a 49-wins team, the 6th best record in the league.
But individuals cant always make it everything by their own. VC and Devin need help. Only Wade, Bryant and James can do that. Plus, Vince is not 24 nor 26 like the Lebron or DWade, so stop those stupid comparisons.
By the way, Carter turns it over 2.05 times per game, Harris 3.02. But some people just see what they want to see, and they see some flaws only in the players they want to bash.

We do have the ability to make the playoffs. But I still think we’d be better off not making it. I doubt that we’ll get any of the 2010 free agents. So if we can get a stud sf in the draft that may be what we need to be in the mix as one of the top teams in the east.

by Opie's Uncle on Mar 7, 2009 10:27 AM EST reply actions

I don’t have the same confidence that we will make the playoffs, we have to play cavs two times and lakers this month, those three games would result in three losses.

Bulls now have their prince to lead: Derrick Rose.

Rose, Gordon, Salmon are three top weapons. We only have a better center than theirs. but they have the depth with miller on the bench.

after the trades, bulls and cats are better and better, thorn never do normal trades to help the teams, he only makes big trades one time by many years passing, and only signs some so-so players on this team, that’s why we can’t compete for the 8th spot.

by jarkid on Mar 7, 2009 11:34 AM EST reply actions

vince is the best player no doubt but he can’t do it alone anymore at 32…

by jirohkanzaki on Mar 7, 2009 11:41 AM EST reply actions

the only way we make the playoffs is if Swat plays big minutes with Lopez otherwise it’s the lottery. I love when Opie says “we’re competeing and putting ourselfs in a position to win. We just have to make shots.” He’s got the mindset and philosophy of a LOSER. With low expectations he has no accountability but with games coming up against the Knicks, Golden State and Clippers and playoff implications on the line lets see how we do. I had to laugh last night watching Orlando go with a front line of 6’11, 6’11 and 6’10 and our forwards are 6’6 and 6’5. The only thing piling up faster than our big mans fouls was their points in the paint. I was rolling when the Czar said we might have to go with Yi at the 5 and Carter at the 4. Our big men should have wrote on the shoes that famous Marbury statement, ALL ALONE.

Playoffs – what’s the point? This team cannot beat the Lakers, Spurs, Celtics, Magic, or Cavaliers – not even once. they can’t even beat Miami. It’ll be a first round exit – probably 0-4 against the Cavaliers or Celtics.

They might as well just lose the rest of their games and get a higher draft pick. They’re as soft as Frank is.

by halwas on Mar 7, 2009 12:27 PM EST reply actions

The Nets should stop going for wild outside shots even if they are just down by two points. I would rather they go for a quick two pointer rather than try to go for something that they know that they can’t make. If they two want to take a lead by at least one point in the closing minute, I suggest going for a three point play instead. I actually hope that the Bobcats do loose to the Knicks tonight, because that will take off part of that burden of being surpassed as well as the Bucks loosing to the Warriors to tie with the Nets. Regaurding those games I mentioned tonight, the Nets have to win tomorrow against the Knicks. Even though their next games will be against teams that aren’t doing so good, they should still win them, because they are at a point where just about every win counts for them. They better also win there last games against the Bucks and Bulls to really push themselves away from them.

@libigman

Oh man, yesterday I was watching and laughing also when I saw we were going with the small lineup against there bigs. I am just shock when they let hedo did the mismatch twice before they switch back. I am starting to think does Frank know anything about basketball.

I mean his small ball is to play offense but Dooling wasn’t even shooting the ball well. Not only did he give up on defense but also offense.

FIRE FRANK, this whole small ball, open drive shoot offense needs to go with Chucky.

People who think that its useless to make the postseason cause they think well get blown out are short sighted.

Look at the Hawks last season. They made the playoffs winning just 37 games, and everybodu thought theyd get blown out by the Cs. They forced them to 7 games, their fans had great moments to remember, and their young players had a great experience that helped them to be the team theyre now: a top4 team in the east.

Ill be OK with this team as long as they compete as theyve been doing lately. If they make the playoffs, great, but I want to see they play to win, not to get a higher pick.

Plus, having a 12th pick instead of a #15 doesnt make any difference. Thorn said theyd consider to trade their 1st rounder from this year draft if they had a pick between 10-18 cause this draft will be weak in those positions.

by Andrés on Mar 7, 2009 2:20 PM EST reply actions

yeah that’s right…this year’s draft is weak…the nets should be thinking playoffs so our young players would know what it is like…it’s more physical and grind-it-out type of games…chris bosh in his fisrt playoffs was rattled and kept out of balance the whole series by the hyper-athletic jason collins…

by jirohkanzaki on Mar 7, 2009 3:26 PM EST reply actions

@ Opie’s uncle

ARE YOU NUTS?!!!!

A team doesn’t “feel better off not making the playoffs.” You try to win EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, and if you feel your team is “better off not making the playoffs” you are obviously not a fan and could care less about anything.

A stud SF in the draft? What? This year’s draft is awful, and it’s not like we’d be getting a stud with like the 13th pick. COme on. And getting a mediocre SF in the draft isnt going to make us “one of the best teams in the east.”

Come on, please!

why cant we start hayes at 3. and bring simmons off the bench.
hassel can go to the bench for a while. let CDR get some mins too..
20 games left. go nets..

We should be in the playoffs this year but i doubt we will be.This team needs a coach that the fans can respect.i cant tell you guys when this team had a coach that was respected around the league.what with that? Im done with this team if frank is not let go after this season.IM A JET fan and have to say that it sucks to be a fan of any ny/nj team. fanbase stays the same win or lose so owners dont really care.

by Zartan on Mar 7, 2009 4:29 PM EST reply actions

@zartan

We may need a new coach after this year, but not because of the fans opinion. Listening to fans isn’t the best logic

This team relies on the 3 way too much. Vince seems to not even want to drive the ball one bit.

The Nets let a defense dictate what they do. I know it’s not easy, but you have to try to mix it up.

As far as the draft, you never know who you could get. You can still find gems at later selections.

by TheNets... on Mar 7, 2009 4:45 PM EST reply actions

@ Andres

you are a very smart man.

Even at 32, people still see Vince as the best player out of all those 5 teams fighting for those playofffs and it’s still true.

Look Noone other than Wade, Lebron, and Kobe are capable of bringing a single team to the playoffs especially when your starting forwards combine for less than 10 points a game.

Vince and Devin will need help and I still think they have the best chance to make the playoffs this year.

We’ve got 4 winnable games coming up starting tomorrow against the Knicks.

@Jim

LOL easy maaan… That’s MY opinion that we’d be better off not making the playoffs. You do know that Brook Lopez was a lottery pick last year right? Ever heard of Danny Granger 17th pick? How about Richard Jefferson a 13th pick? Al Thorton a 14th pick? Not only was Brook a number 10 pick… look who else was drafted with the 10th pick recently. Please make note of some of the STUDS!

Year No. 10
2006 Saer Sene

2005 Andrew Bynum

2004 Luke Jackson

2003 Jarvis Hayes

2002 Caron Butler

2001 Joe Johnson

2000 Keyon Dooling

1999 Jason Terry

1998 Paul Pierce

1997 Danny Fortson

1996 Erick Dampier

1995 Kurt Thomas

1994 Eddie Jones

All of those player were picked with the number 10 pick in the draft. I happen to like Sam Young from Pitt this year. I know nothing is guaranteed. But personally as a fan for much longer than you I’m sure, I’d rather get a player in the draft than wait for 2010 when I doubt if anyone is coming here anyway. Sorry I just don’t think it’s that important to get swept 4-0 bythe Celt or Cavs just to say we were there. We’ve been there like that before and it didn’t prove anything. To me unless you have a chance to get deep into the playoffs you might as well have a chane to get a stud in the Draft. So calm down… it’s my opinion..

by Opie's Uncle on Mar 7, 2009 6:37 PM EST reply actions

you’re right…hopefully we can draft someone of the same caliber as Marcus Williams or Sean Williams…

im sorry to keep saying it but we can get a Lebron James in the draft and this team will go nowere.Im convinced that its all ower coach.
