Head Passes on Nets' Offer, To Join the Heat

Luther Head's agent says the Nets were willing to offer the money to bring his client to New Jersey, but they couldn't offer the playing time, already set in the backcourt with Devin Harris, Vince Carter and Keyon Dooling. So, the Nets are definitely out of the running for the free agent guard. Mark Bartelstein, Head's agent, announced late Tuesday that the 6'3" combo guard will sign with Miami.

So much for the need for a third point guard.

Thats stupid. Why not just offer the playing time and if it ends up not coming…oh well.

Okay…maybe so, but if you go back to the original stories on the need for a third point guard, that’s where the beats described him as a candidate for the third point guard job. They did the same last week…combo, point, it all got meshed together.
I doubt now they will try to sign anyone else. Only big man left is Adonal Foyle and I can’t imagine them going in that direction. Jason Hart is expected to sign with the Nuggets. That leaves some D-Leaguers. Douby? maybe, but I doubt it. Him I know will never be described as a point guard.

Open roster spot? I want ‘Air Slovenia’ back in Jersey!

any other coach would fit him in. maybe play carter at the 3? we go small anyways
by ben on Mar 3, 2009 4:43 PM EST reply actions
don’t sign anyone then…only luther head could have made a difference with his proven shooting from deep…just use cdr or even ager to minimize vc’s minutes and cover for the injured dooling…they can’t do worse than whoever is available out there…

marcus williams wasn’t waived? he could have helped us at the 1 and could have thrown some passes to boone and get him going… :)

Marcus Williams=Not NBA material, if he couldn’t get playing time on the Nets and GS that tells you something.

Nets still have Boki’s Bird Rights. They can sign him outside the MLE or other exceptions…and trade him. He’s still playing in Moscow.

come on ben, cut the frank garbage. Why would Head come here where we have three guards ahead of him and all playing well? Whose minutes would you cut? VC? Harris? Dooling? Why? Dooling is awesome as a spark off the bench. VC and Harris have to get 35 +. If VC plays three, then Harris is 1 and Dooling 2. So where is Head? Or are you cutting Hayes’ minutes? It has nothing to do with the coach: we have three succesful guards, he wants bigger minutes, so he needs to go to a place that only has two guards playing well. Oh, and how come the Rockets coach didn’t fit him in?

F off! Frank is messing up again!
Why not guarantee him some playing time, huh?
Dooling is the only capable guard backing up both VC and Harris!! And Dooling’s health is questionable.
Because of stupid Frank and his stupid stubbornness, we lost the oppurtunity to improve our playoff chance.

there’s this english player that is playing for the spurs….i think his name is pop something….anyway i think he signed a 10 day contract…spurs might sign him again because they might get gooden….we should give this pop guy a try at sf.

maybe the nets don’t want to make the playoffs. i say 12th in the east just ahead of the knicks, raptors, and wizards.

I guess CDR gets to play a few minutes once in a while, maybe in mop up duty? I understand that the NETS wanted to be honest with Luther’s agent. I am sure he has other clients? I don’t know if Luther was going to win us any games. Again, TONIGHT IS A MUST WIN! GO NETS!

Not sure I understand… backcourt:
Harris: Starting
Carter: Starting
Dooling: Backup
Head: Backup?
Did he expect to be a starter somewhere? Why are we comparing Harris and Carter as “spots”? We need a backup shooter off the bench, not a starting SG.

the nets dont want to win. its called LIEING!!!!!!!!!
by netsownall1534 on Mar 3, 2009 6:20 PM EST reply actions
again Croc, what is this Frank stuff? Where exactly would Head’s minutes come from? Are you subtracting from Harris and VC or are you going to play them 35 + a game? Dooling is averaging over 25 + a game. Are you cutting his minutes? Most teams play 9 players, whose minutes would he get Hayes? Hayes and Dooling are playing way too well to offer Head any minutes. Yeah, if one of our 3 guards were out, sure, he’d have minutes. At best, he’d get 10 minutes a game, and that’s stretching it. He obviously needs more to help him for his next contract, so he’s going to a team with an injury that needs someone to play 20 minutes at least.
by Lolah on Mar 3, 2009 6:38 PM EST reply actions
I guess Thorn didn’t think that Head on the bench would have been great enough to pay so much money. Guess Dooling will continue to give VC a blow. :D

@netsownall1534
Correction, it’s calling LYING. When you’re going to type in all caps, you might as well spell correctly.
Anyway, I would have liked to have seen the Nets sign Head (why not have him cut into Hayes/Simmons/Hassell’s minutes? You could just move Vince to the 3 for those stretches of time instead) but I don’t think it’s a huge loss either way.
by Anthony on Mar 3, 2009 7:22 PM EST reply actions
Sure the Nets can lie to Head and his agents about playing time, but don’t you think that Head and his agent to get some sort of hunch of what they’re going to get into. I mean, if we average Nets fans know that Head is coming in to backup the backup, don’t you think that Head knows that? Don’t you think he realizes that the Nets would be unwilling to play Head, an undersized player, backing up Carter? For all you blaming Thorn and Frank for not lying to Head and his agents, I’m pretty sure that Head had some idea of what his role would be with the Nets.

hey lolah i said put carter at the small foward. also your saying carter harris and dooling wont get injured atleast thats insurance. dont twist my words
by ben on Mar 3, 2009 8:09 PM EST reply actions
I’d take Luther Head over Carter ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. At least Head can play some defense and hit open shots. Vince Carter is probably won of the worser shooting guards in the NBA. He is airballing shots, playing no defense, turning the ball over and just can’t make easy shots to save his life. I say Move Carter to the Bench, start Dooling/Head and start PG Harris as well. Carter is hurting this team SO much.

Damn this is disappointing to hear, i wanted to see how well he’d do defending power forwards and centers.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Mar 3, 2009 9:59 PM EST reply actions
carter/harris again played like scrubs offensively but made the plays down the stretch…vc with the assist to hayes who delivers the dagger to the bucks…5 3s in the closing minutes killed the bucks…LUTHER HEAD that would have been YOU getting those passes from VC/HARRIS! are the nets playing the raptors again sometime? vc needs to play them again so he can get going offensively what with those ragdolls they have upfront…37-old shaq ate the raptors big men like barbeque chicken! i think they need charles oakley now more than vc…lol
by jirohkanzaki on Mar 3, 2009 10:47 PM EST reply actions
whatever happend to trying to move carter to the 3? especially since he is a great passer and can play point forward.
Head could have been the starting shooting guard and played 30 minutes a game, not cutting into doolings time, and even letting carter play some guard for 6 minutes average.
Its sad but the obstacle was simmons and hassel.
We could have done with carter and hayes at sf (even both playing small ball minutes at power forward) and keeping average 6 minutes for cdr simmons or hassel, depending on need. but frank obviously did not want to have to mix the plays up to make carter a 3, or he did not want to limit simmons minutes. which is ridiculous because lately simmons has not been getting automatic minutes. so why frank, why?
Harris 35 /Dooling 13
Head 30/Dooling 12/Carter 6
Carter23/19Hayes- Simmons/CDR/Hassel even have 6 utility minutes
Lopez 30/Anderson 9/Yi 9
Yi 21/Anderson 15- Hayes/Carter small ball 12
complete squad, defense, shooting, small ball, healthy minutes with lots of leeway to mix it up and put in williams or boone….
