Game 60 - Nets @ Bucks - Tuesday, March 3, 8:00

The Nets arrive in Milwaukee with the East's Player of the Week and Rookie of the Month and a game and a half out of the playoffs. If there was ever a "must-win" game this early, this is it. The Nets win and they're a half-game out. They lose, it's two and a half out and probably in tenth. Richard Jefferson and Charlie Villaneuva have filled in well for the injured Bucks. Meanwhile, Vince Carter admits he's hurting.

This is a MUST WIN, if we really want to make the Playoffs!
We should be able to run the pick and roll with Lopez all night. Hope our forwards SHOW UP! Defense will win this game. Defense and effort! and oh yes, PLEASE sign Luther Head, and give him 10 minutes a game, in a four guard rotation, with Devin, Dooling and Carter. CDR is just not ready, not if we REALLY want to make the playoffs. GO NETS!!

obviously we all know this game is a must win, and the fact that there are only 22 games left means there’s not much time left.
Highly doubt we sign someone, but if we do I don’t think they’ll play this game.
If we can win this game, we don’t even have to get a better record than the Bucks and if they have the same record we’ll have the advantage.
Remember last time we were in Milwaukee and Yi was so effective? If we ever have a chance to win this game we need forwards such as Trenton Hassell, Yi Jianlian, and Bobby Simmons to actually be productive.
Thank goodness VC is out of his funk, and just like Shuman said, VC has led this Nets team to the playoffs and he can still do it again this year.
Look at the bucks schedule. the Nets, Bulls and Knicks and some tough ones against the Cavs, Celtics, Magic and Blazers.
WE have to win, and I believe Harris will have a big game because he felt responsible for the loss against the Hornets.

@wilson
it seem like every day you wish Yi will do well and play 30 minute or plus. I will tell you now, Yi will never be a star with Harris as a PG. You have a coach that build a whole offense around harris and Carter. No forward will ever do well in this “wait and shoot the ball” offense.
Hassel, Simmons, Yi, Anderson, and every other forward will no do well with this spread the court and lets give harris all the space you want.
Face the facts.

There are actually people here that wants harris to score 50 points. Does Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Tony Parker, jason kidd, Billups, do those guys look to score 50 points to win games. I just question how long these fans watch the game of basketball.

Something tells me you’re gonna be a frustrated Nets fan for a looong time because this is what Devin is and it’s what he’s gonna be. He’s a scoring pt guard. Like it or not it is what it is. He may one day get to 8 assists per game. But he’ll always think shoot first. And he’ll be a perenial allstar while doing it. He may be a 20-8 guy most of his career. That’s what Tony Parker (20-6) is and I think that’s what Devin will be. if he gets another bonafide star with a game equal or better to his, then he may defer. But until then, he’s Devin Harris not J Kidd or C Paul.
by Opie's Uncle on Mar 2, 2009 11:28 PM EST reply actions
I don’t think Devin will be Devin if he defers. Cuz he already has a bonafide star better than his game. But Carter defers better than Harris defers.

Very important game, we have to play on 110%, play solid deffense, cause if we do we can really damage them just like nuggets

I agree with you. It’s very difficult for any forwards to do well in a system like this. The problem is Devin cannot do it alone EVERY game. And it is not realistic to expect other players to pick up the slack all of a sudden when they are ice cold. If the Nets ever want to be a better team (instead of a one-man show), Frank has to come up with a different system and let the other players be productive.
by Bill Chan on Mar 3, 2009 9:04 AM EST reply actions
The forwards won’t do squat is because the garbage system relies on the backcourt to score 70+ per game for us to have a chance, i can’t get too upset at harris and carter when they have off nights and we get blown out because the coach doesn’t realize that offense is a team effort, not just dumping the entire load on the backcourt. If Frank would mix it up with some post up plays for Lopez and some plays for Yi(instead of having Yi stand around and be a spot up shooter), and some screen in roll plays or backdoor cuts instead of just having everyone else stand around watching Harris and Carter jack up shots, maybe then we can see someone else aside from Carter and Harris being effective.
And for god’s sake, not every line up has to have the power forward stand on the arc and shoot jumpers. This is the damn problem. I think we’d get a LOT more out of Yi if he didn’t have to just sit there, set screens, and shoot jumpers.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Mar 3, 2009 10:45 AM EST reply actions
Thats why YI had that stretch of good games because they were running plays for him but now he just stands around and shoots.
by aj on Mar 3, 2009 11:37 AM EST reply actions
@ Mr Dollar Bills
You’re on point. The thing that is killing Yi is he stands around the 3 point line and then takes the spot up jumper. Yi needs to be more involved in the offense and actually he’d do a lot better getting his shots from 18 ft or so instead of always standing 23ft out.

@ Paul Erstein:
Hope you were being sarcastic about CDR. He played 11 mins, had 6 pts, 3 rebounds, a great steal, good defense, no turnovers and no fouls. I say CDR should get minutes in all Nets games. He’s part of the solution, not the problem.
I agree with all posters who say the Nets players are handicapped by consistent inferior coaching on many levels.
That the Nets manage to win in spite of it, is commendable.
But damn, I wish we had a good driver for bus.

SeeVC writes in another forum:
"So when do we see CDR again since he played so well the last couple games he actually played? Next month? Training camp?"
by Jeff on Mar 3, 2009 12:55 PM EST reply actions
I always found that most players who start shooting from the perimeter rarely shoot a high percentage. I found that when you can take it to the rim to start you’ll have better success as you move away. I think VC is a great example of that. The past couple of years he would just bomb away and try to get his rhythm but this year he takes it to the rim more often which helps him. The problem with Yi is he is a finesse type of player for a 4 and is hesitant to go to the rim. He simply needs to go against smaller and weaker players at the SF and he would be more aggressive. For a 7ft shooter with his skill set to be shooting 40% it’s a problem and Opie can’t figure out a solution. It’s typical of our coach. You play people out of position and you take away their effectiveness.
by libigman on Mar 3, 2009 2:33 PM EST reply actions
As long as Harris has a shoot-first mentality, and we have a 20+ SG in VC and an up and coming star in Lopez, no other person is going to produce offensively.
This game will prove which team wants the playoffs more. So far, the Bucks want it, going 7-4 without their 2 stars.
by kevin on Mar 3, 2009 3:39 PM EST reply actions
The problem is first and foremost the coach.. We have a pretty good Center in Lopez and watching the game and every game going forward he’ll never use him the way he should. Agreed that Yi needs more movement!
@ Mr. Dollar Bills – So true, forwards just want make a dent in this offense.. So sit back and watch the horror show develop guys, because truthfully I don’t want to get the 8th seed if we’re playing the likes of Boston Cleveland or Orlando… Let someone else make it that deserves it..
