Nets Waive Swift

The Nets announced late Sunday night that they have waived Stromile Swift. Dealing with injuries early in the season and then his mother's illness and subsequent death, Swift played just six games this season and hadn't seen action since December 10. His contract was set to expire at the end of the season. Before Sunday's game, Lawrence Frank indicated that Swift was close to being back on the active roster.

hope it works out for you stro!

in comes head!

by superb on Mar 1, 2009 10:57 PM EST reply actions

man, ager dodges a bullet.

sad to see stro go but its the best for him. i dont know if he will join a team for the playoffs. i think hes going to go home and regroup unless NO can pick him up where he can be close to home. his mind obviously was not on basketball

how does the money work out with a deal like this? how much do we save?

is this a sign that Head will be picking us?

A couple of points…

Houston, which is close to his hometown of Shreveport, has an opening and a need.

He is much more likely to be picked up by a playoff team than Ager. Cleveland might have an interest, for example. If he is signed, then the money the Nets owe him is reduced (I believe) on a dollar-for-dollar basis by what he receives from his new team. If the Nets are going to sign a player like Head (or whoever else gets waived tonight), the savings could make Head’s signing a wash.

This could also mean the Nets think Doolings arthritic hip is going to be a problem the rest of the way…and need head.

(I think the Nets just traded Jason Collins for Luther Head)

good luck stro! i hope he goes to a team contending for the title and revitalizes him to aim for something with the memories of his mom inspiring him…

Damn that sucks.. he’s going to need some time to recover emotionally.. Guess the Nets felt it was best to be on his own

by Netsfan on Mar 1, 2009 11:20 PM EST reply actions

That’s definitely sad. I was at the game tonight and he was on the bench dressed in a suit. I guess they told him immediately after. This has to mean that a signing is coming. Again, if it’s Head it’ll be pretty good to get another guard.

by KFranchise on Mar 2, 2009 12:11 AM EST reply actions

this the best move for both the Nets and Swift.

Obviously it’s been a horrible season for him, and it’s jus been too traumatizing for him this season.

If he gets signed by a championship like team then good for him, but for now, wait a little and go back to your family and go back to Basketball when your ready,

I’m wishing you and your family the Best Swift, good luck!

Now on to the free agents. I’m suprised the guys are willing to lose a few bucks and raly want the Nets to make th playoffs.

Getting a guard like Head would be great, because to me he’s alot like Dooling, can shoot the 3, is a combo guard, and is a solid back up.

what if we got Gooden to fill that sf spot??? lol yeah right.

collins for swift trade- who won that one?

by ben on Mar 2, 2009 1:04 AM EST reply actions

i hope swift recovers….and returns to the game…

but lets pick up head…hes good when given a chance

Still can’t think of a stranger Rod Thorn trade than the one that brought him here. Two frontcourt backups with identical contracts getting traded for each other and then both wind up spending even less time on the court in their new homes. Never saw the point of it.

The reason why we traded for swift was the fact that frank was in love with a retard named jason collins which kiki would not tolerate.swift actually made mor sense as a player for the team that time.is jason collins stll in the nba lol lol

@ Runnin – I agree… Benn feeling like this for a while…

by Ingonito_1 on Mar 2, 2009 10:03 AM EST reply actions

I think this means a 3rd point guard like Head or someone else that will be cut. Sad for Swift, but SWilliams ability to play makes him less of a priority than a 3rd string point guard. Maybe dooling is more hurt than we know.

by Lolah on Mar 2, 2009 10:16 AM EST reply actions

I think the reason Collins was traded for Swift was because they needed to shake something up. The team had fallen into a slump and sometimes a trade – as minor as it is – rejuvinates the team. It seems like kind of a wash right now when it comes to who won the trade because with Brook playing so well and with all the bigs we have now even if Collins was still on the team he probably would barely play now anyway.

by KFranchise on Mar 2, 2009 12:51 PM EST reply actions

im glad that his contract expires this year, extra 6 mil

by Karol Wojcik on Mar 2, 2009 2:16 PM EST reply actions

It seems they got rid of Collins because Frank would have definitely played him, whcih kind of hurt the team a bit he just was a complete 0 on Offense and Rebounds. On the contrary, Frank didn’t really seem to want to play Swift – not that Swift did anything to deserve playing time.
