Nets Lose to Lowly Wizards... Again...as Frank Takes the Blame

The Washington Wizards have won just 13 games this season, but two of them have come at the IZOD Center. The second came Friday night, using 35-point third quarter to take control before cruising to a 11-point victory. Washington shot 47 percent from the field and was led by Antawn Jamison's 28 points. Devin Harris led the Nets with 26 points and 10 assists, while Brook Lopez added 16 points and eight rebounds. Vince Carter had 17 points and seven assists but shot just 6-17 from the field, and starting forwards Trenton Hassell and Ryan Anderson combined to shoot 1-12. The Nets have now lost five straight games for the second time in 2009. All five on this streak have been by double-figures. In his post-game comments, Lawrence Frank blamed himself for not inspiring the players, saying "I'm just doing a poor job. If I can't get these guys to compete harder I'm just doing a poor job because there's no excuse for it."

Terrible, terrible effort against the Wizards!!! Of course, I suppose we are not that much better than Wiz. The 3rd quarter, I don’t know stats, but they must have out-rebounded us by a lot. Just no effort shown! We really needed this win.

If this team can’t beat Washington, and we can’t fire the players, then this falls on the coaching staff. A game we must win, and we are losing. We lose this game, a game that is a must win, I throw up my hands and give up on the playoffs this year. I was someone who wanted to keep Carter, and make the playoffs this year, so that Lopez and Anderson and YI could taste the playoffs. If we don’t win games like tonight’s, and we miss the playoffs by alot, then keeping Carter was a big mistake.
In games like this, he has got to shoot at least 45% and score 25 points, and so does Devin. This game mad me sick.

Normally I’m not one to scream fire frank. But I must say I’m getting tired of the 3rd quarter duldrums. And since you can’t fire the entire team, it’s time to look at coach frank. Even though I don’t expect anything to happen until the offseason it’s time for a new voice.
And yes we should have traded VC. He can’t carry the team so he’s not worth the 16-18 mil. Shoulda dumped the salary… I mean could we do worse than losing to the wiz without him?

Before the game Rod Thorn told Michelle Beadle that he was “excited as they had a lot of things going on.” I was too — until nothing ended up happening! I would love to know what they actually had going, as it kills me to watch this team suffer so much.

by mike on Feb 20, 2009 10:59 PM EST reply actions
its clear VC wanted to be tradedat the deadline, absolutely no effort on either end ofthe court, settling for jumpers, the one thing i noticed most was watching the wizards get the loose balls while he stands there then hell give them a touc foul, he is a loser. he is a pouter. he clearly wanted out of nj at the deadline and didint get it andhes keeping it behind the scenes saying all the right things. wat a baby he is on the court tho, man piss poor effort

That was absolutely embarassing. I understand that this team is young and has mediocre talent but they aren’t trying out there. Constantly getting outworked underneath the basket and not going after loose balls are two things that are completely unacceptable and are monumental issues with this team. Lawrence Frank can’t find a way to get this team… Read More to not get embarassed in the third quarter? You’ve got to be kidding me. The same weaknesses, the obious, patent, glaring issues and weaknesses with this team are being exploited every single game and Frank can’t find the answers. You can tell, he just cannot find the answers. It’s time to let him go. This guy led the Nets to a 34-48 record last year with a core of Jason Kidd, Richard Jefferson and Vince Carter. Come on now. That’s the last game I watch until Lawrence Frank is fired or some kind of move is made. People have to be out of their mind to trudge out to Morgue Center to watch these clowns put on their comedy routine on the court. THERE ARE NO ANSWERS! lAWRENCE frank in the press conference said he didnt have the answers! and do you know what that means?! firing! and its the perfect time to do it this weekend. tomorrow. satudrday. this is absolutely embarassing…i’ve had it…im not going to any more games this year (obviously) but more importantly if frank is not fired no season tickets for next year. is management sleeping? Why no fire frank chants today? RATNER and THORN were IN THE BUILDING! it would have been a perfect chance. nets fans suck. unfortunately being sick i couldnt make it tonight but these fans need to wake up.

Lack of execution. The players look confused and dont know their plays. Lack of positioning for both offensive and defensive rebounds. The coaching staff is supposed to drill the plays, the small nuances of the game into the heads of the players. I sincerely doubt these guys are listening to Frank. There is no structure in their offense. A lot of hail Marys. The season is going as expected as we have a lot of young kids who are getting to know their roles both in the game and in life. Frank should be doing a much better job though. Maybe he isnt capable of anything better than this.
by zambezi on Feb 20, 2009 11:10 PM EST reply actions
Ok, obviously this was a pathetic game. Again, I give credit to Frank when he deserves it, but it seems like I’m always criticizing him more than I’m crediting him. This might be premature, but I have thought for the past few weeks that we’re not going to make the playoffs, and I was ok with it considering the circumstances that we came into this year. BUt the Nets should have definately traded Carter for anything, even if it was a pure salary dump. I mean, the Bulls and Knicks got much better. Also, it’s time to see a new face. Frank has gotten nothing done in Jersey. He’s also never received strong support from his players, which is the most important. Sure Thorn supports him, but what is he supposed to do? Has anybody on the team ever praised him? Not really unless it was one of those public interview cliches.

What is this do-or-die rotation that consistently excludes CDR? Why, why, WHY? Noticed a couple times CDR even jumped up from the bench and looked down at Coach Frank in anticipation of subbing. But no…
This is beyond embarrassing. Coach Frank acknowledged in his post-game interview that his methods were obviously not working to make the players play better. Duh… Wonder if being personal witnesses to this debacle might make Thorn and Ratner take a closer look at Frank. Fans deserve so much better.

I agree with the fact that CDR should have gotten some minutes for a few minutes.
Reasons why?
Carter’s shot was off tonight, Dooling couldn’t hit any 3s, and Simmons(effective tonight)was eating up Hayes minutes, and Hassell did nothing.
Again record means nothing for the Wizards. This is the same Wizard team who didn’t have Gilbert Arenas, but still had Jamison and Butler, and they still are very effective.
You know why we lost? Small ball in the 3rd quarter. A 1st grader could tell that the Nets were getting outrebounded and Frank just sticked with the small ballwith 4 guards and one big.
No one boxed out.
Frank has to movitate his team o come out on fire in the 3rd quarter. Don’t freaking clap when your down by 14?!!?!
CDR or Heck even Swat could have brought some energy in the 3rd quarter and he has to make his players focused and tell them to stop shooting 3s when they are not making them!?!?!
This is not good. Thank god the Bucks lost…but the Bulls destroyed the Nuggets….
I’m losing every ounce of respect that I barely have for Frank.
Not that I’m saying the players aren’t to blame as well.
I feel sorry for the fans….

I don’t think I have seen a Nets team with good offensive flow since the year of their finals appearance. It’s always been awkward, confused……players trying not to screw up.
Then I see Kidd and Wright looking so free, flowing nicely, and showing confidence as Mavericks right now, it only leads me to think of one variable. Whatever it is……..coach or system………allow me to say: it DOESN"T WORK!
by croc on Feb 20, 2009 11:34 PM EST reply actions
Every time I hear Frank speak in the post game interviews he sounds like a bumbling idiot. Um, ya know, um defensive positioning, ya know, um… He’s like a JV high school bball coach. He has got no precence at all and he doesnt know how to motivate men. He basically kisses up to his stars and he avoids confrontations with his players at all costs. The great coaches use confrontations to motivate his players and get the best out of them, particularly the under achievers. Frank wants to stay on the good side of his team so they don’t mutiny. He needs to challenge the players and I wonder if he does. I still can’t get over that Frank is the longest tenured coach in the eastern conference. Why Thorn why? Its passable now, but a few years back when we actually had championship aspirations I always wondered how far we would have gone had we had an established elite coach.

I know some of you guys love Anderson like a “son in law”
but Anderson has got to be bench. 1-9 for 4 points is really terrible. I mean how many games in a row can you play like this and get away with it. There is summer and practice sessions to play rookies. CDR is getting no playing time while you got this 6 ‘10 guy standing around on the court throwing up 3. I’m starting to believe the Nets organzation is trying to hype Anderson at any cost. Is definely not about who is playing well or caring about going into the playoffs.
I can understand if we given up the season, but if the playoffs is in the line, he should be bench.

that seemed to be working better…Ryan Anderson has so little talent…he has fundamentals….
nets really need to get back to how it was before
the hassell fluke isn’t working anymore….Ryan Anderson should get 10 minutes per game tops cause 8 out of 10 nights he is off…
Doesn’t Frank realize that going small late in the game isn’t working??
i mean it worked in the philly game…but he needs to get over that….I’m not a frank hater..but as a fan who knows the game from observation…whatever he is trying to do…resulted in this 5 game losing streak.
It just doesn’t make much sense….
getting out rebounded every game but still going small?
quite frankly, i think it’s time to get back to how it was before….I’m seeing too much iso O and too much man to man D….and I don’t think there is really a stand out man to man defender on thsi team….
and if we’re saying Hassell is the best Defender….gotta go with the zone…keep Brook and Yi down low…they’re the tallest players on the court most nights

look people, i wouldn’t entirely blame frank for the team’s lackadaisical play… VC probably isn’t happy here (i’m sure he’d rather be in SanAntonio or Portland or Phoenix). Devin has shown NO signs of leadership EVER in his career.
the current root problem is VC overpaid contract. WHO is more responsible for VC and RJ’s overinflated contract??? Ratner or Thorn? Or both equally?? at this point, Thorn has only 2 options: salary dump VC for nothing, or VC retires a Net.
I HATE RATNER… and Thorn is not always the genius. I’m just entirely discouraged at the team and organization.

by Jon on Feb 21, 2009 1:02 AM EST reply actions
JohnY:
agree with just about everything you say above. But don’t underestimate just how bad of a coach Larry is. Not saying we have a very good roster right now, but a real coach like Jeff Van Gundy could drag Devin, Vince and the emerging Brook into the playoffs. With Frank, they will be lucky to win another 10 games this season now that confidence is in the toilet and there is no game plan and an awful rotation going on a nightly basis. And most of all, no one to answer too, he may know how to break down video, but he can’t motivate or inspire professional basketball players to follow his lead, it was obvious 5 years ago.
Bottom Line: VC is not a winner, Devin is not a true floor leader like we had for the past six seasons, Frank is awful, Ratner is worse and both of them are making Thorn looks pretty bad in the process.

by JayMS on Feb 21, 2009 2:16 AM EST reply actions
Im hoping the management will look closely on this and somehow fire Frank.
I think Frank is using the role players strength incorrectly but he’s okay setting or designing plays for the main guys. Anderson’s strength is not really shooting, although he can shoot, he is still a rookie and needs more confidence and years to be able to make those consistently. Just like a little clip they’ve shown about him on half time (i think), he was posting up and using his fakes and feet to get to the basket easier, he’s very crafty. I’m thinking if he could somehow play a little bit closer and not force shots far outside and maybe he’ll be a little more useful. The same goes with Najera. Frank needs to utilize more his other players because when they play better basketball, we win more games.
Frank also needs to tell VC to stop shooting to many running, fadeaway jumpshots and he’ll be more effective. The dribble-drive offense for DH is perfect, he just needs to be more confident, more aggressive and more of a fighter especially when it comes to the elite PF or C’s because i noticed that when he plays with great PF or C’s, he hesitates and he commits more TO’s. Passing to the open players for an easy jumpers is not a bad idea but we don’t really have a big time shooter like other team has so i think DH needs to penetrate more than just passing the ball.
Frank needs to maximize their strength and not show their weaknesses. And that’s exactly what he’s been doing and that’s why players like SWill never advanced and instead, went all the way down the drain. Damn, i had high hopes for SWill because i believe that he can still be a contributor esp. defensively and not be just a D-League or overseas player. He showed flashes and at least, he can change the opposing players shots, if not, block it.
If only Frank is not stubborn and maybe players like CDR wouldn’t just stand around in the corner and watch the plays run for the same player all the time, and maybe, Antoine Wright would still be here and disrupt the opposing elite SG’s and once in a while shoots some 3’s.
And how we always leave an open players by the 3 point line? How, the Knicks, when i once watched them, only left twice or thrice an open player behind the arc? They are more of a scoring team than a defensive one but they somehow defend better than us! I think we have better defensive players than they do so what is the problem? This is unbelievable man and i can’t stand this games anymore. And to be honest, i want the team to tank and maybe we can get a good player on the draft but losing for about 20-30 points a game is ridiculous! Losing to an injured team with the worst record at home without Arenas is embarrassing!!
Franks needs to go and he needs to GO NOW!!!!!

This team is sooooo disgusting! Thank God I didnt finish watching this game, I had a feeling that this team would find a way to lose. Like I said before, there is nooooo(absolutely zero) need for VC on this team…he role is basically to stand on the three-point line and watch Devin do his spin derby of moves…and if, I repeat if he is lucky, he gets the opportunity to bail them out by taking passes with about 5-6 seconds on the clock and work his magic lol! That is why his shooting percentage can look a bit crazy at times, because so many times he is put in bad positions from his teammates…no longer is JKidd around to set him up in a great spot, he is now that passser to everyone on the squad. This team is always so lost on defense, I mean when they play zone it’s like they just decided to do it on the fly with no practice prep at all! I think I’m gonna shut it down with watching my boy VC play with this squad for the rest of the season…blessed the day that Vc is traded to a great quality team. Peace out Jersey, it was fun and I wish ya’ll the best with the season and ur 2010 aspirations! Take care

Start Swat at the 4 and Yi at the 3. Let Boone back up the 4 & 5. Between Lopez, Swat and Boone 2 out those 3 have to be on the court at all times. No more small ball. It’s as simple as that. Opie just has to change his philosophy and think big. Hopefully the losing will create change. If you don’t see the problem, you can’t fix it. When Opie put Swat in for the 5 minutes with Lopez against Howard there was a defensive intensity that this team hasn’t showed all year. It worked against Howard the best big man on earth. Can you just imagine how it would be against the rest of the league.

Harris is not the problem. Thorn and Frank are. Kidd covered for Frank all those years, now that he is gone Frank has been exposed. But worse, if you look at the talent on the roster other than VC. DH and Lopez who would break into the top 8 rotation on any other halfway decent team. Thorn’s wasted draft picks over the years have drained the team of cheap talent. His FA mistakes are legendary. Face it the talent level is not there, and the coach is not good enough to lift their game.

They need to fire the coach then rebuild this team. Devin is not an All-Star; he should be the most improvement player in this year. His minutes are up and has ball handling more than other player. He is not a leadership EVER in NJ, but when you watch the game, they have all players stand at the corner, let him run and penetrate to the basket, either get foul or score. They just pass the ball to VC when it is down to last 5 second and expect VC to hit the shot. I start to stop watch NJ games until next season and I hope VC goes to the better team.

This effort was unprofessional. That is LFrank’s fault. With hustle and better subbing, this was a game we should have won. 35 wins now seem like a distant dream. I want Yi to play too, but he has been out for a month, and needs a few games to get back into it. I think Anderson has hit the rookie wall. Lopez continues to play well on the offensive end, but his defense and rebounding are slipping, probably the rookie wall too. I continue to be surprised that the front office did nothing to improve the team trade wise this past week. I have hit the “fan-wall” too, I just couldn’t stand to watch last nights game. I tuned in, in the third quarter when I got home, saw the score, and did not rewind the DVR to watch the game, and I did not watch the end either. This was a must win. I see out playoff hopes and hopes for 35 wins slipping away. Have the players tuned out Lfrank? Is it time for him to go? Eddie Jordon? Michelle Beadle? LLCoolJ? Bill Clinton? Abe Lincoln? Rachel Madow? Who should be coaching?

this is where an on the floor tough love and smart veteran could really help
or even mkki …yet , no chance of him returning here

Why fire the coach? His talent level is about equal to Washington’s. Past Harris and the ever Fading VC, what has he got? A rookie who got beat up yesterday at Center, two PF’s who are a couple of years away, and a SF that would not start on 28 other teams. What other team would start Anderson, Yi, or Simmons? What team would start two of them? What team would start Anderson, Yi, Simmons, and Boone? That’s our team: half of it is at the bottom of the talent level. One is a prima donna and the other is a poor man’s Iverson. 25 wins is about right. This is what we are. Riley would not get more wins. But, Landry + Battier + Artest – VC would have won last night cause those guys are intense.

^^ you fire the coach when the same 3rd quarter slumps happen in almost all of our games! i have never seen a team have that kind of personality ever in the nba! its like groundhog day! that cannot be the players fault. for management to see the same results over and over and not make a change is insanity. the absolute definition of insanity. wehave gotten into some very bad habits and the change needs to come from the top.
boone needs to be playing alongside lopez at the 4 for some period during the game. he is a scrapper that keeps balls alive and goes for loose balls.
how come we havent seen a big lineup in any of our games?
lopez, boone, yi/anderson, hayes/vc, vc/harris?
why the need to try and go small all the time?
why is cdr playing pg?? he is a 2!! let the man come off screens and shoot the ball!
why is vc never posted up?
cmon this dribble drive offense or whatever its called is crap!

Again, play Ryan Anderson and Brook 30 plus minutes and we win. Even if they come out a little cold, they are rookies and will play through the rough patches. Case in point last eight games:
Ryan Anderson
02/03 MIL 39 19 7 0 0 2 1
02/04 WAS 30 18 9 2 2 0 0
02/07 DEN 37 13 12 4 2 3 1
All 30 plus minutes and ALL WINS
Ryan Anderson
02/08 ORL 20 3 5 0 0 1 0
02/10 SA 21 5 5 1 1 0 0
02/17 HOU 25 5 1 1 0 1 0
02/18 DAL 21 7 5 1 2 0 0
02/20 WAS 19 4 9 0 1 0 1
All under 30 minutes, ALL LOSSES

@superb
It’s called watching a young team. You think the Nets were predicted to win the East this year? I mean, come on.
by Haze on Feb 21, 2009 12:46 PM EST reply actions
@ Justin,
RA had 9 shots last night…he hit 1…that’s more then alittle cold…
RA is a type of player who’d get 20 mins on a bad team…but 5 mins on a good team…

When is YI going to start again???
Play him 30+ minutes and he will put 15+ points and 7+ Rebounds!!!

lol yeah, i think i’ve hit the “fan wall” as well.
That was a fun season while it lasted, with obviously our climax being after the west coast trip.
But after that one home “jet lag” loss to Washington after the west coast trip, the team just couldn’t really find it.
Oh well, at this point we should stop caring about winning and just worry about developing our three draft picks, Harris & Yi
I wish Carter was traded for Outlaw, we could have developed him too
Sign Mikki Moore for some toughness for this squad…if he does well re-sign him for next year
Fire Frank, i hate this guy so much i hop ehe ends up in the streets struggling to support himself and/or he gets deported back to midgetland, iowa
thats all for today cya

Hey, if Yi plays defense, rebounds and we win, I am perfectly fine giving him the 30 plus minutes as well. With a shooter like Ryan, you are going to go through struggles like 1 for 9. 9 shots is not that many. With a sparatic 19 minutes, it is hard to get in a groove shooting. Vince even was horrible in the first three quarters and only ended with 17. I believe, Vince had 5 points at halftime. He started shooting better and driving to the lane in the fourth quarter.
by JustinNJ on Feb 21, 2009 1:51 PM EST reply actions
To me it seems that Ryan tends to bang down below more than Yi. Yi has to use his 7 ft. frame underneath and get tip ins and offensive rebounds more often. He tends to roam around the perimeter too much for a 7 footer. He must add that to his game to be more effective for the team. Shooters are nice if their shots are falling, however, to be a complete player you have to play an inside game as well to take your game to the next level. Even Dirk drives to the lane and is around the basket throughout the game. I use Dirk as an example because that is who Yi is constantly compared to. We shall see.

The dibble-drive could work, but, it is not designed to be
a one man show… Devin (LF) is working it backwards. The
defense knows DH is shot first, when the intent is to take
advantage of the collapsing defense and pass to the open
shooter.
Devin is lightning quick, fast and talented; he needs to
penetrate sooner in the 24 seconds and not give up his feet
so often. Almost seems that DH & VC should switch roles as
VC has better court vision, and Devin will take the ball to
the hole off the VC pass.
This is all just sooooo frustrating…There are games we
should win and therefore MUST WIN.

V. Carter, always contributes, but can’t carry Nets, true. He does it sometimes, which is not good enough for “number one” Nets player. He always was second banana, but very good one. D. Harris is third option, but wants to be number one. Sometimes he is, but it’s also not good enough to carry the Nets. Harris is better SG then PG, but not strong or big enough to be true SG. We need somebody like P. Pearce, who is the natural leader
or bring J.Kidd back. This will bring us to square #1, when we had Kidd, Carter and Jefferson, with the same old problem…..deficit at the PF position (once we had in K. Martin). Oh… I forgot.. we have Williams at four..hm.. Nothing is new under this sun, we are running in circles.
Soon or later Carter will be traded and real rebuilding will start.
We had our chances, but management/owners screwed it up.
BTW firing L.Frank is not going to help.

please fire frank and use a big line up.
the hassell trick isnt workin anymore.
our starting forwards suck big time.
why cant we use CDR and swat during the 3rd period, both can surely bring some energy in to the game.
this might be wrong but atleast worth seeing somethin different than seeing the same horrible effort less 3rd quarter, every game.
waive mo ager please.
we have to go back to our starting five at the beginning of the season or start Yi and lopez with VC, DH and maybe hayes.
dooling, CDR, simmons, swat/ryan and boone.
najera is injured anyway and i don think swift is ready to play. and ager is a lost cause.
looking at these games makes me feel tat simmons is not really that bad after all. so he could provide a scoring punch off the bench along with dooling.
bottom line: Frank has to leave
by yogi on Feb 21, 2009 2:23 PM EST reply actions
CDR can definitely be a better player than trenton hassell or mo ager, if a chance is given.
if swat commits the same mistakes in the game that ryan anderson makes, do u think swat would still be a starting 4.
he wouldnt even be in the second unit.
im sick of all this

As far as I can remember, Ryan Anderson had one very good game – a long time ago. I just don’t get the hype on that guy. Perhaps if I had watched college basketball, I’d understand why everyone loves him.
And when “Opie’s Uncle” is suggesting that Frank be fired, that’s REALLY saying something. I know he works hard and he tries, but he’s not effective.
Sadly, the Knicks have finally managed to become the better team. That is just soooo sad.

Who are you referring to as “Opie’s uncle?”
And damn i really hope frank gets fired SOON. I am actually checking back in with Nets Daily every hour or so hoping that the first entry is “After a five year tenure, the Nets Fire Head Coach Lawrence Frank” or something like that .

Feel the same way about CDR. He hasn’t been given a chance even though the “veterans” don’t get the job done, become ill, etc. Why not?
My high hopes at the season’s start were based on development of ALL of the rookies. I felt CDR would be the ideal backup 2 guard. For CDR fans, what a letdown his rookie season has been so far. He just doesn’t get a chance to play under any circumstances. We still have faith in CDR. As to Nets coaching? Not so much.
