Nets Should Have Traded VC, Say Pundits

In their assessments of the trade deadline, national writers focused mostly on deals that got done, not those that didn't. But among those that didn't get done, a Vince Carter deal is one that should have gotten done, they believe. Most focused on the commonly held beliefs that VC's contract is too onerous for these times, that it hurts the Nets in the 2010 free agent market and that he's not getting any younger.

As it is with most who work in the media, these same writers will be praising Thorn a year from now when he trades Vince (who will still be putting up all-star numbers) for a deal that actually includes something besides expiring contracts.

Nets made the right decision. The offers were poor and a 33 year old VC is still better than what they would have had in exchange. Most important, as I said throughout the process, the Nets’ youngsters need VC’s maturity and stability.

A salary dump was not the right move, if anything, we needed something to add to our core now.

Amazing though that we had people here trying to justify a Carter for Lafrentz-Frye trade.

Did anyone ask B Lopez Why on Draft night when he was told who the nets head coach was he made that expresion?

by NetsBall4Real on Feb 20, 2009 10:07 AM EST reply actions

I’m happy that VC didn’t go in a “salary dump” proposal.
I want to see the “VC Leadership” plan play out; that said,
this team really needs to step up. Vince, Devin, Brook,
YI, Ryan, Keyon and the rest of this Nets squad need to
put their personal agendas behind and play for each other.
The playoffs are still the goal and attainable.
Individual mind-set and character are the keys to delivering
wins; wow, sounds like the early season Nets.

by oldjersey on Feb 20, 2009 10:15 AM EST reply actions

Simple truth is nobody wants Carter. He’s expensive and tends to throw up a lot of fadeaway garbage. His performance against Dallas was a perfect example. The Nets got him for nothing and that’s all anyone else will offer.

The combination of Carter’s lack of discipline and a weak coach like Frank is a recipe for disaster. The new “stand around” offense is tailor made for one on one primadonnas like Carter (and Harris).

by halwas on Feb 20, 2009 10:31 AM EST reply actions

What’s wrong w/ some of you guys?
Carter a prima donna? OMG.
Carter has been great this season. Compare his stand up attitude with JKidd’s one last year and then tell me who’s a prima donna.
Nobody wants him? Some of the league very best teams chased him (San Antonio, Cleveland, Houston, Dallas, Portland), yet didnt found enough anything those teams have to offer.

by Andrés on Feb 20, 2009 10:41 AM EST reply actions

I meant the Nets didn’t find enough…

by Andrés on Feb 20, 2009 10:42 AM EST reply actions

Vince has been everything you ask for in a teammate/captain. I’m so glad the youngsters have him around. They really love/respect Vince Carter.

Paul Pierce: born in 1977, 19.9 PPG, 5.8 REB/G, 3.8 AST/G, 44.9 FG %, $18 million salary rising to $21.5 million in 2010/11.

Vince Carter: born in 1977, 20.9 PPG, 5.0 REB/G, 4.8 AST/G, 43.8 FG %, $15 million salary rising to $18 million in 2011/2012.

Do these pundits think Pierce’s contract also is “too onerous for these times”?

by pinetar on Feb 20, 2009 10:48 AM EST reply actions

@halwas

You get Comment of the Season from me so far.

The bad part is all the other GM in the league knows about this, otherwise I would have told you to go away.

by Seeker on Feb 20, 2009 11:10 AM EST reply actions

When VC takes over the whole team does well; the opponents
successful adjustment is to put a defender like SA’s Bowen
on him to deny VC the ball. The rest of the Nets can’t take
advantage of a defender that isn’t allowed to help “off-the-ball”; we saw it at San Antonio and at Dallas. The answer for Frank and the Nets is to put the ball in VC’s hands to run the offense with Devin at the two. In those 2 games the NJ offense just stuck Vince off in the corner and conceded his and the Nets “game”.
Get it together Nets, It’s time to play TEAM ball and win the games we’re supposed to win…Starting tonight!!!

by oldjersey on Feb 20, 2009 11:34 AM EST reply actions

@pinetar
Nice analogy with Paul Pierce. I also would like someone to comment on Steve Nash (1 yr younger than JKidd), yet noone ever talks about trading Nash who went from MVP to not making Allstar game.

VC needs more motivation to help during this playoff run.
I get the feeling the players don’t know if management really, really wants a 7 or 8 seed in playoffs this year or prefer to get a lottery pick.
Thorn and Ratner need to give the club a motivational talk. LF can’t do it himself. I blame the players and management more than LF.

That’s why I am disappointed Ratner apparently didn’t give the OK to swap Swift for Mikki for the playoff run. They apparently were worried too much about 2009 budget.
Perhaps, by the time they were ready to make their move for Miki yesterday, Sacramento had finished their firesale? We may never know.

Swift, SWill and Najera may not contribute and Boone is a bust at least 50% of the time. To get a combination 4/5 who could have motivated the team would have helped.

one of the Dallas analyst said suprise they put first score to Devin, second to Lopez and third option score to VC, me too.

The media ALWAYS wants the nets to dump their star players for a bag of balls and an 8×10 glossy of nate robinson dunking over dwight howard.

The media HATES the nets and wants them to suck forever, primarily because so many of these so-called experts grew up rooting for the knicks, or work for somebody who did.

Funny how we never heard media generated trade rumors of the nets acquiring kidd before that deal went down in 2001, or rumors of the nets acquiring carter before that deal went down in 2004, or rumors of the nets acquiring harris & 2 picks before that deal went down in 2008.

Even before ratner bought the nets, the only rumors we ever heard were of star players LEAVING the nets, not coming to the nets.

Hmmmmmmmmm … i wonder why the “experts” in the media only present one side of the story. It couldn’t possibly be because so many of them are bitter knick fans, could it?

Of course, it only makes it that much sweeter when the nets win to see the dejected faces of the david aldridges, kenny smiths and chad fords of the world.

by brooklyn bob on Feb 20, 2009 1:10 PM EST reply actions

What would you all think of a pass first/defensive minded PG coming to NJ and putting Harris at the 2 and VC at the 3?

…just wondering.

by Dirt on Feb 20, 2009 1:17 PM EST reply actions

Andres

stats mean nothing. Kidd is a far superior player. VC is a stats compiler but not a winner. It’s about wins. DWade has done more with equally mediocre talent in Miami. As far as teams wanting him: I doubt it. They’d have him if they wanted him. No one put out a decent body for VC. Imagine Houston saying to Miami that they would not trade Battier for Wade!!!!! Come on. VC is a very good player, but not a star in the league of the real greats and not a difference maker.

and pinetar has the same stat myopia: Pierce and VC have similar stats, but Pierce is playing with two of the better players in his league so his numbers are tempered by that fact. He was also a stud in the playoffs. I have not seen VC be a stud yet in the playoffs. Stat stud maybe, but not carrying anything stud. Pierce’s contract is obviously not onerous b/c they are champs! Nets need many pieces (Celtics need a few minor pieces, if at all) and VC stands in the way of getting those pieces.

by lol on Feb 20, 2009 1:29 PM EST reply actions

@ Dirt Sounds good, but we can’t afford much this offseason. MLE is not going to bring a player like that here. A guy like Sessions may get 6-7 mil (he’s not much of defensive minded player, but he sure has court vision—-17 assists in one game earlier this year, 24 in one game last year).

@ pinetar, @ Jerry.

paul pierce=bad example. If we were contending for a ring, no one would question the economics of paying VC 16mill/yr.

I don’t think there is a way we can motivate VC. VC will make 30 million dollars regardless of how our team does—-and being that he was shopped hard this past week, he definitely knows his days are numbered in NJ.

by brian on Feb 20, 2009 1:45 PM EST reply actions

let’s see…what if vc joined forces with duncan, ginobilli and parker? hmmm…vc will suddenly disappear and the spurs are sure to lose!

by jirohkanzaki on Feb 20, 2009 2:23 PM EST reply actions

vc sucks…but if the nets trade carter for garbage to reduce salary, ratner is the worst owner in the league…no wonder people and players themselves say nets fans are the worst…

by jirohkanzaki on Feb 20, 2009 2:30 PM EST reply actions

jirohkanzaki says it right: No one took VC cause he does not make teams better and is not a winner. Teams that need that one player to get over the top need someone who is a winner. VC likes to play not to win. Battier + Landry + Artest = better than VC. Mason + Hill = better than VC. Outlaw, Frye, Lafrentx = better than VC. Not better as individuals, but they equal more wins.

by lolah on Feb 20, 2009 3:16 PM EST reply actions

Wade – no Shaq can’t win the title
Piere – no Kevin or Allen can’t go into playoff
VC who is the superior player play next with him

by hi on Feb 20, 2009 3:53 PM EST reply actions

Battier + Landry + Artest better because they play with Yao & Tracy. Mason + Hill play better because they have Tim Duncan & Parker. Who is playing with VC? rookies, bunch of young players? How you expect VC to be the winner, you need to have two or more better player

by hi on Feb 20, 2009 4:02 PM EST reply actions

If Thorn and Ratner want to make NJ to be a better team, they should add some good SF or PF in helping VC. So far,
Shaw – arrest
Swift – not playing
Agar – not playing
Bobby – injury
Najera – injury
Hayes – injury
Yi – injury just back to play
CDR – bench
Josh – worst free-throw
Lopez – no defense
Devin – poor shooting
Ryan – foul trouble

You can’t all blame VC, just want to play and don’t want to win, how you win the games with all these garbage player in your team.

by mm on Feb 20, 2009 4:14 PM EST reply actions

Vince is a very good player. Well above avg. But for what he gets paid, he’s not worth the money to the Nets. The Nets are losing money left and right just like a lot of teams. And they have one of the lowest payrolls along with some of the lowest attendance in the league. A lot of contenders wanted VC because he would be a nice piece to the puzzle. But the only team I think he would have made the favorite to win it all is the Cavs. Other than that, none of the teams that pursued him thought he would have guaranteed them the title or they would have pulled the trigger. But for the money he wasn’t worth the risk.

By the way VC did play with HOF player JKidd and RJ.

by Opie's Uncle on Feb 20, 2009 4:32 PM EST reply actions

@mm

Just wondering if VC and Devin are both shooting 43% as they are… does that make VC a poor shooter too? hmmm

by Opie's Uncle on Feb 20, 2009 4:44 PM EST reply actions

at least they’re in playoff when VC played with JKidd and RJ, they’re out of playoff last year was Thorn decided to trade JKidd out to Dallas. What is not worth the money VC gets paid, you see Gilbert, Tracy, Stephon… all in highest payrolls but sit out with injury or do not play list

by ss on Feb 20, 2009 5:46 PM EST reply actions

Those guys aren’t worth the money either and catch a lot of greif too. It is what it is. VC is very good but not elite. He loves to play and you can tell that. He’s ALWAYS laughing and smiling shile playing and chit chatting with the opponents. That’s not something I see most winners doing. They may do it before and after the game. But during the game they are trying to KIL you. VC enjoys the game and likes to display his talent. He has more ability than any player I’ve ever seen. As someone said las week he’s probably the only player that could win the slam dunk, 3 pt shoot out and horse in the same weekend. But that talent has never translated into a winner. He’ll never be remembered as that. He reminds me of Dominique Wilkins. But Dominique did have that classic with Larry Bird. That’s what I’ve always wanted to see from VC. Take over a game and put your foot on someones throat and don’t let up. Then do it over and over again! He’s too nice for that.

by Opie's Uncle on Feb 20, 2009 5:57 PM EST reply actions

you will see him do it if he is not on NJ uniform. It will be an excited games if he plays with LeBron, Kobe, Wade, Chris… I missed the time he have been played with JKidd so many pass, alley-hoop and dunk

by vc fans on Feb 20, 2009 6:13 PM EST reply actions

fans expect VC too much, slam dunk, a winner, scoring…, and you play the worst team you don’t get benefit for refs call

by vc fans on Feb 20, 2009 6:17 PM EST reply actions

You guys seriously dont get it… Those teams chased VC… Nets werent interested in what they were offered, period, thats it… and chris, I repeat, please tell what teams were offering for Kidd las year… remove that stupid man Cuban, and the best offers we had were Hughes, Kwame Brown and Radmanovic, or Jack and LaFrentz… Kidd doesnt deserves making $20 m a year… He hasnt made the Mavs any better… HES DONE.

Heres a FACT: Jason Kidd hasnt played ANY, I do repeat, ANY conference Finals without playing alongside Kenyon Martin and being coached by byron Scott. Hope you got the message.

Jason Kidd, not Vince Carter, was the team’s leader when they didnt get pass the 2nd rd this years. When VC came in the Nets were headed to misery again, despite having Kidd and Jefferson in their roster. No VC, they wouldnt have made the playoffs those years, period.

Obviously Carter was not the guy who would take you to win a championship. You need more than that. Pieces like an interior force, a great supporting cast and an elite coach, things the Nets have lacked since Martin, Scott and all those guys left.

Paul Pierce had won just 3 playoffs series before Boston landed Garnett and Allen. Dont be ridiculous.

And stop comparing Carter to Wade, Bryant, James… hes not in that class, period, we all know that. But hes def not an inferior player to guys like Pierce, Allen or McGrady.
