ESPN: Do the Nets "Want off Vince"?

That's the quote attributed by ESPN's J.A. Adande to a rival GM, who added that he expects Vince Carter to be "moved"...with the Nets "giving him away". But to whom? Marc Stein reports the Spurs were offering Bruce Bowen, one of the pieces in their VC scenario, to the Kings for John Salmons...before he was traded. Portland? Fred Kerber says it's likely the Blazers ship out Travis Outlaw for Richard Jefferson. Houston? Sean Deveney says they're more interested in Baron Davis.

Didn’t Von Wafer look good yesterday? That guy is quick and a good shooter to boot. He’s a free agent at end of the yr. Nets should try to pick him up.

Keep Carter- now that Tmac is out there no point of him going to the Rockets.

yes von wafer looked really good last night. the nets should make a play at him in free agency. he can replace Ager!
I still hope we deal Najera to clear a roster spot, but I don’t see it happening. And I would not mind seeing us trade Ager for Douby.

No disrespect to VC, but I would want off him and his contract if I were the Nets. Its like keeping a show dog as a house pet. I, like the Nets, aren’t going to the big Show anytime soon.

Why isn’t Thorn (maybe he is) going after Salmons? He’d be an upgrade at sf, a little undersized, but a good player. Swift is expiring…..
after last night’s game, I’d want off VC too. This team is going nowhere this year. When he scores big, they play terribly. He deserves a better team and we deserve some young players and a new future. The Kidd, RJ, VC, thing is gone: get the last one out of here, so we can start looking to the future.

im tired of those espn writers, the gm who said that is clearly trying to lower vcs value. some teams are bidding for him, if the nets wanted to dump him for whatever, he would be gone even before the season started.
dont believe this crap.

I find it hard to believe that people think we would be better the remainder of this season AND NEXT without VC. I’m guessing Nets would have 9 wins this season without him and they would never see .500 without him if that was the case next season.

we need to get rid of deadweights like
Ager
Swift
Simmons
and acquire a semi-star that doesn’t whine or cry about limited shots or whatever.
We’ll have a solid squad.
DH
VC
Whoever
Yi
Lopez
With a developing bench… We won’t go far this year.. but I think next year or even the year after Nets will be a solid team.
Frank has to go though…… There’s no reason why CDR shouldn’t be getting any minutes. He’s a rookie. Williams is also rotting on the bench.

to add to the previous post.
I think Mike Miller would be a solid addition.
by Bryan on Feb 18, 2009 3:51 PM EST reply actions
Getting Rid Of VC would be terrible, especially for all the proposed trades so far. I agree that we would need to aquire a solid 3rd star/near star calibar player to take steps forward. Vince is one of the nba’s best, I don’t see him being replaceable.

Nets traded KMart, never had a good PF since
Nets traded RJ, didn’t get a good SF in return
Now if they trade VC, they will not find a quality SG until they enter the pointless Lebron sweepstakes…
thus giving fans nothing to watch for a while
by Trenton on Feb 18, 2009 4:06 PM EST reply actions
I have said for days – I will give up my season tickets in a heartbeat if the Nets trade VC. All that says to me is that the owner is so obsessed with return on his capital that he is willing to put an inferior product on the court and still gouge fans with high ticket prices for the privilege of going. Have you ever traveled to another arena in another city (not MSG)? Tickets are much cheaper. In Chicago you can sit on the court for $200 per ticket – in NJ its probably closer to $1k. And United Airlines Arena in Chicago is really really nice. IZOD Center is a dump.
To trade your best player whom ever player on the squad who matters (the young future talents of this organization) have all been vocal about wanting VC to stay. Lebron is not coming to NJ in 2010. Bosh, maybe. Lebron NO CHANCE. So all this would be is a straight salary dump for Ratner to make more money.
Even the Blazers deal – unless you get Rudy and Outlaw combined with LaFrenz’s contract it is a straight salary dump that will harm the team in the future. And Rudy will never be VCs replacement. The funny thing is that the Nets could probably get a decent 3 for Swift’s expiring contract along with a pick and make some real noise this year.

please deal with portland. the rest of these trades i dont think we are getting anything close to value. portland can help the financial side and basketball side if they are still interested in vince. but if they can get RJ for the same package then good for them.
i really cant believe we are going to “give away” vince. he means too much to this team on and off the court. if we trade vince we are taking money back anyway, so why not pay vince for the rest of the year then move him in the summer?
i trust rod with trades and vince’s value hasnt been this high in a while so for him to just give vince away is a sign of a salary dump and i think would be a PR disaster. trading away fan fav in RJ pissed off a lot of fans and some still dont like it, then you “give away” vince for salary cap and you can guarantee that fans will be more pissed off and nobody will go to games. plus they keep drilling into fans head that we are moving. there are only so many things fans will take and if vince is given away fans will distance themselves away from the nets. ill still be a fan because im a nets fan first, but we cannot afford to give away vince

breaking news very soon:
according to multiple reports
The New Jersey Nets are talking to the Sacramento Kings about a deal that would send Brad Miller and John Salmons to the Nets for Ryan Anderson, Stromile Swift, Eduardo Najera and Trenton Hassell, an Eastern Conference official said.
Salmons fits perfectly at the 3 and miller is a solid backup center.
this still keeps our 2010 FA chances alive.

i’m wondering if VC plays tonight, if that means nothing is going to happen. If the Nets are close to dealing him and deadline is now less than 23 hours away – I would think that he “sits out” with some sort of “injury”. If he plays, I would think he is safe or that nothing is imminent. I can’t imagine them risking a big time injury by VC playing tonight if they were going to deal him.
Any thoughts?

Adande is an idiot. He has his nose so far up Kobe’s butt he probably hasn’t watched a Nets games since the ’03 finals. Devin Harris is the Nets best player? Tomorrow, maybe.

VC STAYS YESSSS!!!!!
According to Kerber:
“One more day to the trading deadline. The Nets, several sources say, are not vigorously reaching out to teams to make a deal but are accepting calls – although that could change tomorrow. And despite Vince Carter’s name being in numerous reports, the stance that team president Rod Thorn and Kiki Vandeweghe have maintained all along seems more than probable: Carter will stay put.
Yes, there were talks and offers. Some made no sense, some were great deals – for the other team. And Net counter offers were sometimes one step shy of felony robbery. But Carter is a talent, having a terrific year all around and the Nets aren’t going to give him away. Thorn would be more apt to duck his head in a vat of acid then deal Carter on a straight salary dump.
But there is always a chance of something jumping up. Don’t bet on it. Houston seems dead in all aspects (a Rockets source said there was nothing happening on the Carter front). And the Spurs seemed to have turned attentions elsewhere."

Lets hope Milwaukee trades Jefferson. Milwaukee has been playing better since Redd went down, mostly due to Jefferson picking up the offense.
Nets chances for playoffs should improve without Jefferson.
Now that the deal for Salmons has been thwarted by Chicago, maybe we can at least settle for getting Mikki back for Swift. It would have to help us for the rest of this year. A healthy Carter has done well for playoff runs, especially with Mikki to “energize” the club again.
The Nets sucked everytime Boone was in the game yesterday.
Swat, Swift and an injured Najera will contribute nothing for the rest of this season. Mikki will be a plus (at the 4 or 5) and he is off the books for 2010. Meanwhile Sacramento benefits since Swift is off the books for 2009.
Its better than nothing.

I want VC to stay because he don’t want to go. I kinda feel sorry for him right now. This must be very stressful even though he’ll never say anything contradictory to this. As I wrote last evening about the Houston owner protecting their aging, injured proned superstar (T-Mac), I feel bad for VC not having the same support plus VC has been better for New Jersey than T-Mac has been for the Rockets. Houston owner publicly vowed not to shop T-Mac the guy has missed a ton of games yet they support him. Go Figure.

if they trade Vince for any of these deals, it is a salary dump—nothing less. If they do it, it will be the final finger in the eye to the fans in NJ telling us that nothing matter unless and until they get to Brooklyn.
They can have all of the salary cap flexibility in the world but if nobody of note wants to come here, it’s not worth anything. What free agent will commit for multiple years with 1. The building situation unsettled, 2. a creep of an owner and 3. the coach we have.
Get over it, nobody’s coming with all of these uncertainties.
I’ve followed this team since the Island Garden in the ABA. I have never been as discouraged as I am now.

Dave D i think sums the vc rumors and possible decision making up the best in the following:
" So consider the wide-angled reality of the matter. The season is probably going nowhere. The franchise is going to lose upwards to $35 million again. The arena is not generating any revenue. The fan base, such as it is, is already apoplectic. Brooklyn is still a pipedream until it isn’t.
And against that backdrop, you have a former All-Star making $16 million next year and $17.5 million the following year (that’s 40 percent of their committed payroll in 10-11) who can’t change any of those harsh realities."

I was just looking at this online – and this works if we keep or trade VC. Marvin Williams of Atlanta is a restricted free agent this summer. Atlanta is still unsettled with the ownership situation, they have a lot of money tied up in Josh Smith will have to pay Al Horford in a year, will have to make a decision on Bibby, Zaza this offseason and Joe Johnson next offseason.
Lets say the Nets keep VC and make no trades. You automatically are losing from the roster Ager, Swift, with team options on Jarvis Hayes and Hassell. I think that you let Hassell go because of roster space. I definitely believe they re-up Hayes. We will also have our first round pick on our team (as I doubt the Nets trade this pick as a 1st round pick is one of the cheapest salaries they can have on the books – plus it goes with the rebuilding mantra.
Even with cap space, the Nets are not going to be major players in 2010 as Lebron, Dwade, Amare are not coming. Atlanta is also experiencing money problems. Why not make a push to sign Marvin Williams and hope that the Hawks don’t match? He is still super young (I think is like 22) and super athletic. This is building for the future.
PG – Harris/Dooling
SG – VC/CDR/hayes
SF – M Williams/Simmons
PF – Yi/Anderson/Najera
C – Lopez/Boone/ S Williams
+ First Round Draft Pick.
That starting lineup is going to be one of the most explosive lineups in the NBA – and the bench is a pretty solid bench. You also keep tradeable assets in Simmons, Najera and Sean Williams. I think they keep Simmons just for the cap relief the following summer. CDR and Boone are both restricted free agents in 2010 – but I imagine will both be retained for very inexpensive contracts (I know most of you hate Boone – but he is one of the better back up centers in the League – and you don’t want to pay a guy big money to play 10 min max per night).
Williams contract could be front loaded in year one to try and keep Atlanta from matching – and also to give cap flexibility a few years down the line when they have VC expiring and need to resign Lopez, Yi and Anderson.
Now if they were to trade VC – they will have plenty of cap space. Assuming the deal is done with Portland (which I highly doubt) lets say you get LaFrenz expiring contract, Outlaw and Rodriguez.
This year you absolutely suck and fail to make the playoffs. You now have a lottery pick and a lot of cap space. Again you have Ager, Hassell and Swift coming off the books, and you re-up Hayes.
You now have even more money you can throw at a player like Marvin Williams while going full tilt into your rebuilding plan while building around very young athletic players. Also remember that most teams now are in salary dumping mode – so free agents this summer might not get the type of deals they imagined at this point last year. Here would be your 2009-2010 roster.
PG – Harris/Rodriguez
SG – Hayes/Dooling/CDR
SF – M Williams/Outlaw
PF – Yi/Anderson/Najera
C – Lopez/Boone/ S Williams
Under this situation – you have a young trio of Harris, Marvin Williams and Lopez. You are pretty set at the 4 spot with Yi and Anderson. You are set with Boone as the backup center – so……..with your lottery pick in the draft you target the best swingman on the board (unless you get the #1 pick and then you have to take Blake Griffin).
Regardless of if you are trading or keeping VC – I think making a run at Marvin Williams this summer is the best move this team should make in the FA market. Maybe you even let Hayes walk and target Von Wafer as he will be making much less than Hayes would get.

Have times ever been more tumultous for us Nets fans?
We have a terrible coach that everyone wants fired
Our schedule is wacked horribly difficult
We are considering trading our best player
Our team is playing its worst basketball of the season
We are missing out on great trades that could help our team
our playoff hopes are hanging from an EXTREMELY THIN wire
…and all we need to do is make a trade that helps our team decently and we propel ourselves to the 6th our 7th seed…EASY.
Our arena is terrible
no one goes to the games
Brooklyn is never happening
No free agent will wanna come here
This is an absolute joke
What are we gunna do?

hey, maybe we can get travis outlaw or caron butler without giving up Vince. Question: Why would all these really good teams be after Vince? ie. San Antonio, Portland, Houston, etc. Answer: Vince still has 4 or 5 very good years left! WHY, should we trade him than? WE SHOULD NOT!
by JustinNJ on Feb 18, 2009 7:45 PM EST reply actions
We should build around the core group of guys here. If the rumors were correct about Salmons and Miller, then Rod is doing the right thing by trying to add pieces that can put us in a very good position for the playoffs. This time we fell a little short and couldn’t complete the deal, but, I am sure he is keeping his options open.
