Who Are These Guys?

With players and teams dropping in and out of speculation as the 3 p.m. EST Thursday deadline approaches, permutations are hard to track. So we've pulled together primers on the players mentioned in Vince Carter trade scenarios...from the Spurs, the Rockets and Trailblazers. We've also laid out what each team can offer re: draft picks, stashed European draft rights and cap space. No guarantees, of course.

blazers win…

by Andy on Feb 18, 2009 9:42 AM EST reply actions

oh yes i would definitly take that blazers deal, but if they would put rudy fernandez in that package much better.

by bdawg on Feb 18, 2009 9:46 AM EST reply actions

come on portland throw in rudy!

by Andy on Feb 18, 2009 10:19 AM EST reply actions

I would go with the Houston deal, I think at this time the Nets need to win and be in the playoffs. The houston deals improve our team in every position.

Battier, landry, Artest- Carter, boon.

Also I like VC I think he has a better chance at Houston with Yao. I like to see him in the finals.

by seeker on Feb 18, 2009 10:32 AM EST reply actions

I’m tired of checking in everyday wondering "are we there yet? Are we there yet? Trade VC for a popsicle if you have to and let him go get his darn ring.

by iiii on Feb 18, 2009 10:36 AM EST reply actions

@iiii

I feel you man I am the same way….if we are going to trade him. DO IT already.

by Jad on Feb 18, 2009 10:44 AM EST reply actions

@ iiii

I got news for you, unless Carter is dealt to the Lakers he ain’t winning a ring. The Spurs deal doesn’t work so you could throw that one out. The only deal that makes any sense is the portland deal, and even with Carter they are still the 5th team in the West at best. You obviously are not a Nets fan so go away, your comments add nothing to the debate. By the way Vince will not be happy if he is traded from the NYC market to play in Portland.

by GTO on Feb 18, 2009 10:55 AM EST reply actions

I can not wait for 3pm tomorrow to pass – I am so sick of checking this website incessantly to see if VC is still a Net. I still hope that VC is not traded, and that the execs realize that VC belongs in a Nets uniform.

The only trade that makes any sense thus far is the Portland trade – but I would rather the Nets insist on Bayless, LaFrenz and a pick. I would not want Rodgriguez, maybe Rudy instead of the pick. But the big problem again is – if you have all this cap space and nobody wants to come play for you – you end up with a team of a few promising young guys, and then a bunch of MLEs. You are not winning and the games are not fun to watch – plus your young players don’t develop.

I think Najera having injury after injury has really hurt us this year. Not from a play standpoint (because I think they realized week 1 of training camp that BLo and Anderson were going to play A LOT) but from being able to deal him. He would be attractive to playoff teams from a veteran perspective, and one who doesn’t make much money in the scheme of things. Unfortunately being constantly injured means we can’t deal him. Hopefully this summer. I would trade him for a pick…….

who made you God of this board? FREEE VC! Who want to stay in Jersey?

by iiii on Feb 18, 2009 11:12 AM EST reply actions

@ iiii

appearently VC wants to stay in Jersey. He said yesterday that he would rather stay in NJ and finish what he started 4 months ago than be traded.

by uuuuuu on Feb 18, 2009 11:15 AM EST reply actions

If Rudy isnt involved in a deal then its a no go. Fernandez is what we need to replace VC at the two and I love Outlaw at the 3.

Lopez/Boone/Williams
Yi/Anderson/Najera
Outlaw/Hayes/Simmons
Fernandez/Hassel/CDR
Harris/Dooling

A young, but very talented starting 5 flanked by a mix of veterans and youth off of the bench. Outlaw gives us exactly what we need at the 3 on both ends, and Rudy gives us athleticism and shooting needed for an SG lining up alongside Devin Harris. Harris will have 4 guys around him that can knock down the open J, opening up the floor for his slashing abilities and if they want to pack the paint against him we bang inside with Lopez and run some more creative sets for Yi to utilize his full compliment of skills. If we must trade Vince, this is the way to go. Then in the offseason, with LaFrentz off the books we can be creative or sit on the cap room.

Oh, and “FF”

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Feb 18, 2009 11:23 AM EST reply actions

so portland offered outlaw all they have to do is include rudy…and nets can’t say no to that…lafrenz comes off the books…and we have tons of money in the future to make signings to improve the team….i like vc but for outlaw and rudy its must.

by Andy on Feb 18, 2009 11:27 AM EST reply actions

Houston would be foolish to take that deal: Battier and Landry and Artest are too central to their team. If portland still had a player like Jack instead of Fernandez, it might be a solid deal. But Outlaw is the only keeper. At least the houston deal has two keepers. I’d rate it Rockets first (but they will not give up that much), portland second, cause Outlaw can be real good, Spurs third. But Thorn may do nothing unless Houston gives in to his crazy demand. I think Houston is better with those players than with VC, b/c of their defense and interior toughness. I think Portland is better with RJ who is a natural 3 and can defend better than VC, and I think short term Spurs are better, but Hill can become something. No one is taking this contract and all the other questions around VC (like D). He is with us until his knees fall off!

by john on Feb 18, 2009 11:28 AM EST reply actions

mcgrady is out for the season, maybe rockets give up a bit more, if they have anything to give up

thunder are gonna be pretty good next season

by justin on Feb 18, 2009 11:31 AM EST reply actions

@iiii

No one, I just find you annoying. By the way VC is not a prisoner and I would rather live in Jersey than Portland any day of the week. This will be my last response to you because there is no need to engage in a flame war on this board.

Even though I am against trading VC. I think if Portland sent us Outlaw and Bayless instead of Rodriguez, it would be equivalent to the Kidd deal and I think the Nets would have to do it.

I don’t think Portland adding VC will put them ahead of LA, SA, Denver, Houston or NO. Kidd, Carter, and Jefferson was a better 3 than Roy , Carter and Aldridge. And the Nets couldn’t win with it, so I don’t think Portland could win with it. Even if Portland upset the Lakers and got to the finals, they would not have a chance at beating Boston, Orlando, or Cleveland.

by GTO on Feb 18, 2009 11:43 AM EST reply actions

I agree GTO,

Vince likes it in NJ, he’s the man. He is not a prisoner. If he hated it he would nt smile as much and would probably ask to be traded to speed things along.

Asking to FREE VC rather than have him help the current team shows where that one poster stands as a true Nets fan.

by Trenton on Feb 18, 2009 11:52 AM EST reply actions

Spurs have Mason, Hill, Oberto, and Bowen. Popovich has turned Mason and Hill into really good players. How well would they do here?

Rockets have nothing to offer.

If Portland can give us Bayless and/or Fernandez, it’s a good trade for the future.

by kevin on Feb 18, 2009 11:57 AM EST reply actions

There are many permutations with the Blazers, much more wiggle room.

There is no way, however, they are giving up Rudy Fernandez. Forget it.

Jerryd Bayless is another issue, but not much less than Fernandez. The Nets loved him before the draft, love him still after he toasted them in NJ. Problem is how does he play with a 25 year old with the same skills in front of him, along with a solid veteran who is still only 28.

They have lots of picks and those two Europeans, one of whom, Joel Freeland, is described as a David Lee-type.

And remember this, the one thing Portland has a lot of is CASH. Their owner is one of the wealthiest men in the world and the Nets are losing money. Nets might very well settle for “cash considerations” instead of a player, a pick or EuroStash.

I dont like the Spurs deal, and I cannot imagine the Rockets being willing to part with all those guys.

by Net Income on Feb 18, 2009 11:59 AM EST reply actions

I like Roger Mason but come on, Nets could have tried to get him during free agency if they liked him enough.

Ugh, no offense NetsDaily, but I hate having to check this site every 9 minutes to see if there is an update. At least you’re getting a lot of traffic…probably more than NJNets.com.

by Trenton on Feb 18, 2009 12:04 PM EST reply actions

no rudy no deal imo

by Andy on Feb 18, 2009 12:08 PM EST reply actions

If the nets like Mason they could have taken him during free agency AND had Carter. Great Job.

This site is getting more traffic than njnets.com probably cause everyone like me is checking ever 6 minutes for a VC update.

by Trenton on Feb 18, 2009 12:13 PM EST reply actions

yeah man…im getting dizzy from checking this site so much today…

by Andy on Feb 18, 2009 12:15 PM EST reply actions

@ Net Income

I think with Bayless, his value is great enough that the Nets would be able to trade him for a player that fits their needs more. I agree with you about Rudy, Portland would have to be on crack to include him in the deal.

by GTO on Feb 18, 2009 12:15 PM EST reply actions

I agree with many of you – if we do a deal, we MUST get young, emergng talent (i.e. Devin Harris – JKidd trade). If we could somehow get Outlaw, Bayless/Fernandez, that’d be magnificent.

With that, the Nets would have a solid, young roster on which to build for the next years.

I think Devin, Rudy, Outlaw, Yi, and Brook is a damn good lineup.

I love VC. But for now this makes sense for the Nets – they took a risk by trading Kidd and it worked. Took a risk getting rid of Jefferson – it looks good. And now trade Carter.

by Alex F on Feb 18, 2009 12:18 PM EST reply actions

but blazers also have webster….so they can include fernandez….with vc and roy on the same team…both webster and rudy can’t get minutes

by Andy on Feb 18, 2009 12:20 PM EST reply actions

If the Nets could get Fernandez and Outlaw plus the expiring contract of LaFrenz then I think they pull the trigger, and you can’t really fault them for doing this. If they take less than that, I don’t think is a great trade. I would not take back Channing Frye in any form – as we already have 2 young 4s who need PT. And Frye is not better than either of them.

But I really believe that VC stays in NJ.

by Ryan243 on Feb 18, 2009 12:23 PM EST reply actions

does anyone ever check njnets.com? seriously.

by Ryan243 on Feb 18, 2009 12:25 PM EST reply actions

Why does Ianozzone report that Yi is almost untoucable? Why? Am I missing something or is he soft and can do little but spot up shoot? His turn around jumpers are pathetic. He is overwhelmed in the interior. Even if he improves, how much better (or less worse) will he be? I’d trade him and keep Anderson. I’d hate to see Najera go, but Landry would replace him. Anderson and Landry would be a good PF combo going forward; Battier would improve the sf; and Artest would sit in for VC at the 2. All in all, I think we get the better of the deal.

by john on Feb 18, 2009 12:25 PM EST reply actions

Looking at Houston, I think they might put the lineup of
Alston, wafer and put Carter at sf and scola and yao ming.
the bench would be hayes, barry, brooks, boone or anderson. I feel the rockets need a little more scoring in the playoffs to match against the other teams. With Carter it might help, Carter and Mcgrady and yao is quite a big 3 for next year. They might pull the trade. But after watching Landry and Battier yesterday I don’t how Rockets can do that though.

I

by seeker on Feb 18, 2009 12:25 PM EST reply actions

@ Alex F

That lineup would be pretty good, The oldest player in that lineup is Devin at 25.

by GTO on Feb 18, 2009 12:26 PM EST reply actions

FYI, the Nets DID go after Mason in the summer. He was on their initial list of targets as two of the beat writers reported. They have gone after him twice in the last three years.

Gee, you think Roger would want to play with a rebuilding team in a lousy arena rather than play with a championship contender in a great new arena. Nah.

by Net Income on Feb 18, 2009 12:55 PM EST reply actions

I think Portlands deal sounds better for Nets .. it would sound better if jarryd bayless instead of rodrigues … and a draft pick i would take the deal … I became nets fan when Vince joined the nets im Vinces fan and i dont think he will win with SA or Huston or Dallas .. they need more than one player to win agains lakers , boston or clevland ( wich i dont think are chapnionship caliber lol) so vince can be great mentor in Portland and nets get great young talent , As VC fan I HOPE HAPPENS bc now im nets fan too…

by VFan on Feb 18, 2009 1:05 PM EST reply actions

blazers deal better

by italianice on Feb 18, 2009 1:14 PM EST reply actions

You know, now that I think about it, it’s killing me to know what Thorn is thinking: Does he want to give this year a shot or is he rebuilding?

A) If rebuilding, then pull the VC deal wold be the best option

B) If making an attempt to win this year, he should have gotten Caron Butler already or someone else while kEEPING VC, Devin, Brook.

I’m just confused as to what he wants to do — I wish I could text him lol.

by Alex F on Feb 18, 2009 2:44 PM EST reply actions

And the other thing is that there is ABSOLUTELY NO GUARANTEE that any superstar in 2010 will sign with the Nets – So how dumb would it be to suck for 2 years with hopes that you sign someone when you have the opportunity to do something now?

by Alex F on Feb 18, 2009 2:55 PM EST reply actions

trade with portland
