Setback for Yi

Yi Jianlian suffered an upper lip laceration that required 50 stitches to close when he was hit by an inadvertent elbow thrown by Sean Williams while playing 3-on-3 after practice on Saturday. Yi, who has been out since Nov. 2 with a sprained right knee, will be reevaluated on Monday, Dec. 14. Doctors had to repair a muscle in Yi's lip during surgery.

Jeez. 50 stitches on the lip? Damn. That should be at least another week before he can suit up, I would guess. Sean Williams by any chance?

Unbelievable! I was looking forward to seeing him now that Kiki and Del are coaching. Doubt we’ll see Swat though.

Does he have any lip left?!?
He must look like a rag doll.

How come one hurt his lip this hard that needed 50 stitches to close the cut during a bball practice?
by Olive Sweet on Dec 6, 2009 10:08 AM EST reply actions
He may have to wear a Phantom of the Opera mask when he comes back, ouch!
by soul driver on Dec 6, 2009 10:27 AM EST reply actions
Its ok that he is out.
He will only be with the second unit this year.
Kiki knows the guy is not a starter.
Worry about next years draft and get a PF so we can put J.Boone with the seocnd unit and Yi on the nbench only to come in for outside shooting when needed.
This guy reall does not know the game. He and S.Williams are talents in some parts of their game, however, both have very low NBA Basketball IQ’s

Who hit him. I will guess Sean Williams did because he doesn’t want Yi to come back

Olive, that’s what I wonder. Back in the day I had stitches to close my lip too. (only two stitches though haha) But 50????
by Gerard Himself on Dec 6, 2009 10:31 AM EST reply actions
@Dziedzic
You are 100% wrong. Kiki is the guy who traded for him and Del Harris was hired in large part because he was Yi’s coach on Team China. Both of them think he has been under utilized. He will be a bigger part of the offense than he was under Frank.
The Nets draft on the best-player-available basis, not by position.

50??! did all his team mates take turns stiching him up?
by fastbreak on Dec 6, 2009 11:07 AM EST reply actions
source said yes, it’s Sean Williams hit him. But I’m still wondering how
by Olive Sweet on Dec 6, 2009 11:12 AM EST reply actions
50 stiches sounds unbelieveable. Something happened other than an elbow. Who beat him up.
by BigEd on Dec 6, 2009 11:27 AM EST reply actions
I though it might be Sean, and it would be true, LOL. now Kiki would be angry and never play sean!
by jarkid on Dec 6, 2009 11:39 AM EST reply actions
Cmon 50 stitches for an elbow to the lip? 50 stitches would be a laceration a foot long. What kind of baloney are they feeding us now?
Oh – and he’ll recover in a week? From a foot long laceration to his face?
I think somebody is exaggerating. I suspect its more like 5 stitches.
by halwas on Dec 6, 2009 11:39 AM EST reply actions
he must look like Chucky, the doll from Childs Play now.
by jason on Dec 6, 2009 11:51 AM EST reply actions
The lip was torn from the underlying muscle. That’s why he required so many stitches.
Satisfied, jarkid?

Says Ben Couch, “No one thought Yi’s injury was that bad at the time – just seemed like dude had gotten popped in the face. He even wanted to keep playing.”

Now from @briancmahoney: “Strange scene before Nets-Knicks as Sean Williams refuses to provide any details of play that cut Yi’s lip, requiring 50 stitches.”

uhh, 100 percent wrong.
i wouldn’t surprised if Yi becomes the no. 2 guy on the team with Kiki coaching the team.
by netsball on Dec 6, 2009 1:45 PM EST reply actions
This does suck. It doesn’t matter whether Yi is great or not. The Nets could use a guy who can hit a shot, especially from the 4. Maybe a mouthpeice would have helped, but it sounds like a severe elbow. I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often.

50 stitches… it’s rarely happened even in the official game. I can’t imagine how hard is that elbow.
by Skaye on Dec 6, 2009 2:50 PM EST reply actions
if SWat delivered that elbow to “matured yi” dirk nowitzki of the nets’ 2010 unprotected 1st pick giver mavs Swat would play 30 mins/gm…but he delivered it to kiki, del harris and yormark favorite “young nowitzki” yi so SWat will get waived as soon as the nets get a chance… :)

hashahahah.. it’s a typo for sure… they meant “5” stitches.. how the heck are you gonna have 50 stitches on your lips? unless he’s a freaking dinosaur .. hahahhaha

yi is made of delicate crystal
any small touch, even a wind blow and bang!!!
broken…. i cant believe we lost RJ to have this pain here!!!
anyone wants harris for an undrafted pick!!!
Lopez for a 3rd round pick!!!
Lee for lakers 2nd pick in 2013!!!
Lets just disband the team. i cant take it anymore
by mr. omG on Dec 6, 2009 10:33 PM EST reply actions
You can probably get a new set of Lips with 50 stitches…..OUCH !!!!……Poor Yi…..I hope he gets well soon….
by NetFan48 on Dec 6, 2009 11:02 PM EST reply actions
A little off Topic but I feel even worse for Greg Oden….I wouldn’t part with Brook Lopez but I wish that we could trade Yi ,other players and picks (Not our # 1 in 2010)for Oden…..Although what will probably happen is the Lakers will probably trade Bynum to the Blazers for Oden , still win the championship and when he recovers they will have the Top Center in the West for the next twelve years….or the celtics will make a push for him or Miami….I would think that Portland must be pretty down on him by now…I wish we could get him…..We should look into this….
by NetFan48 on Dec 7, 2009 7:51 AM EST reply actions
Don’t worry about trading Yi. Once we get a starting true Power Forward in the draft. He can be a asset with the second unit.
by Dziedzic on Dec 7, 2009 9:15 AM EST reply actions
@ Net Fan48 Says:
It is a shame what happen to Oden.
Thats why it is important for the Nets to look very serious at the draft for the center/power forward C.Aldrich of Kansas.
He is abanger that backup B.Lopez along with playing next to him at PF when needed.
by Dziedzic on Dec 7, 2009 9:19 AM EST reply actions
This is funny
cmon you gotta love this
Yi on the edge of coming back and SWat feeds Yi an Elbow sandwich
That the way this season will go folks
Yi needs to be traded for Bosh
CMon get it done!!

Maybe Yi should become a doctor. He has had more experience in the field of medicine, then in basketball… Calling doctor Yi… Calling doctor Yi…

@NetsBall Says:
Boy I hope your wrong about Kiki making Yi a second option.
You cannot teach a player heart to be the best.
Yi has no heart just some talent to get by.
I ask you a question.
Do you really think that Yi is better the D.Favors/G.Monroe or C.Aldrich. (2010 Draft Options)
I am sure Kiki knows better.
Hope you are wrong about Yi.
As far as your comment that Yi will become the #2 guy on the Nets.
What planet are you on? You are going to tell me that C.D-Roberts, J.Hayes, C.Lee and D.Harris are not in the conversation about being second option to B.Lopez? You are saying B.Lopez is the first option? I hope.
Really get with the program and enjoy basketball for the right reasons.
I do believe Kiki/Rod know what they are doing but your option of making him a #2 option is so ridiculous.
Kiki made the trade to get under the salary cap along with the future. He is not a starter but maybe a second unit option.
