Do the Nets' Unknowns Hurt in Free Agent Hunt?

Mitch Lawrence listens to Kiki Vandeweghe and Rod Thorn talk all about how the Nets are the best prepared for the 2010 free agent shopping spree: the good young players, the draft picks, the cap space. But Lawrence notes that in a competition, the Knicks have the Nets beat in a couple of areas: they know where they're going to play and they know who their owner will be. That could hurt the Nets.

why is the owner a mystery? its gonna be prok, either way. and as far as playing, it wont be brooklyn next year. thats a given. sounds like a knick homer jealous about the nets legitimate chance at some free agents.

more than the concern of whonour owner is and wher we play i think the amount of games we win will be a contributing factor towards FAs like James and Wade. Bosh would com to NJ even if were bad, but can win. I hope the free agnets take the injuries weve hade into condieration because if we come up empty or not signifcantly improved from thsi offseason, theloss of the big 3 wll be an absolute disgrace

I honestly dont want LeBron coming to the Nets but i think he might end up here because of his relationship with Jay Z. LeBron is an amazing player and all but im not a big fan of LeBron for other reasons. I would rather get the likes of Rudy Gay + David Lee..which would make us a very good deep team
Harris/Dooling
Lee/CDR
Gay/TWill
Lee/Yi
Lopez/Aldrich?(rookie from Kansas who is similar to Lopez)
this would make us a complete team with alot of room to grow and become contenders in a few years

Mitch Lawrence is a horrible basketball writer. The article makes no sense because all the unanswered questions regarding ownership and Brooklyn will be answered way before July 1. The guy is such a Knick homer and never gave the Nets any respect even when they were relevant. And im sorry Mitch, when you make the NBA Finals 2 years in a row, you are relevant.

For the last time, Lebron will pretty much stay with the Cavs no matter what. Despite his great relationship with Jay-Z, that’s not enough to bring him to the Nets nor will a move to Brooklyn. Honestly, we can do without him and he tends to be a ball hog most of the time. Even Kobe isn’t like that. Lebron is more trouble than he is worth with all those ridiculous demands he tends to make. If he was really comming to the Nets, it would be reguardless to how the team is playing and/or where they will be playing. He couldn’t care less if they end up Brooklyn or not.

By the time Free Agency actually starts, the Nets could very know who their owner is and where they’re playing…
by NJMetsHero on Dec 6, 2009 1:10 AM EST reply actions
The Nets will know both by July, and should know in the next month or so.

pretty much doesn’t mix with no matter what. He either will or won’t. The age of the Cavs’ front court and the lack of decent guard play hurts their chances. There are teams out West that don’t necessarily have much cap room but will compete. We’ll see how much money is a motivating factor for him. I really believe the Cavs’ window is closing fast.
by kg on Dec 6, 2009 2:19 AM EST reply actions
If the Cavs get bounced and do not make it to the finals, Lebron is not just going to sign up again with the Cavs. He is going to try to team up with another star player. Its probably most likely he will try to lure another star free agent to Cleveland. But they will need to get creative to pull that off because they have a lot of contracts on the books for 2010 already. We can get creative in a number of ways to team up Lebron with another legit free agent star player, and we may already have an established star in Lopez by that time. We are still in the game and Prokhovic is a wild card. Who knows what he will say, do or promise in order to entice a free agent to sign here.
by Chris2 on Dec 6, 2009 2:20 AM EST reply actions
One extra star isn’t going to fix Cleveland’s chances. And it seems as though the one guy that would have done the most for them (Amare) is going to be favored to stay put now.
by kg on Dec 6, 2009 4:44 AM EST reply actions
Please dont waste any money overpaying David Lee.
If we draft a stud PF (Favors), then we could sign someone like Gay (which is an idea Im not too enamored of, but it might be the best option…)
Harris / Dooling
CDR / Lee
Gay / TWill / Hayes
Favors / Yi
Lopez / Boone
If we land a perimeter player in the draft (Wall, Turner), then sign a star PF:
Harris / Dooling
Wall / Lee
CDR / TWill / Hayes
Stoudemire-Boozer / Yi
Lopez / Boone
Harris / Dooling
Turner / Lee
CDR / TWill / Hayes
Stoudemire-Boozer / Yi
Lopez / Boone
If we land Favors, I think we should try to get a pass 1st PG w/ the Mav pick then. If we get Wall/ Turner, then try to draft a defensive PF-C with the Dallas pick to complete the big man rotation. I also believe that 2nd rd pick (#31-32) could get us a good player.

By the time 2010 free agency begins, the Nets will know whether Prokhorov owns the team.
by Big Tom on Dec 6, 2009 8:01 AM EST reply actions
We know Proky’s ownership is likely to be approved. What we still don’t know after 6 years is whether Brooklyn will ever happen. My guess is no.
by MrT on Dec 6, 2009 8:13 AM EST reply actions
Article is a joke…. Both the “who will be the owner” and “where will they play” questions will be settled by early 2010… long before free agency starts!

Sean thank goodness you aren’t the gm. David Lee and Rudy Gay suck compared to Bron. Listen I dont know what Lebron has done off the court but IF you can get the greatest all around player in the game then you do it. That is a simple thing. I doubt he comes but look at your lineup. Know look at the current Cavs lineup. We are better than them at every position except SF and maybe PF (that is because we dont have one.
Harris
Lee
Bron
Favors? or if you can get both Lee
Lopez

Really people…… the article by Mitch Lawrence stretches idiocy beyond it’s limits. WE WILL KNOW LONG BEFORE JULY 01 whether Brooklyn is a go or not, and if Proky is in or not, spending or not, who our draft pick is, etc. etc., etc.
The article is SENSELESS! Any sane editor would have ripped it up on the spot. It speaks very poorly of NY Daily News sports editor to not catch and reject a totally meaningless article.
Newsflash to Mitch Lawrence and everybody else……. Nets’ ability to lure big time free agents is officially TO BE DETERMINED later (TBD). That means something people!

“Tal

I find that interesting comming from you SmartNetsFan, because many Brooklyn supporters think that moving to Brooklyn is the only way to land him even though you don’t, making you one of the few that doesn’t believe that.

@Sean Says:
You are correct about getting C.Aldrich. Were I difer with you is that he is like B.lopez. Not even close. But we are in need of a true back up center that can give a spell to B.Lopez along with holding the middle down with the second unit. C.Aldrich is that perfect fit in the rotation of the first ten. He also can play PF if needed because we are short at that position. Come fourth quarter we will be in game with a fresh Lopez to close out games. Last time I looked it ment wins. Yeah.
We need to trade #2’s and our number of 2011 to get three more young players of need in 2010.
C.ALDRICH/PF-C G.MONROE/PF D.FAVORS/PF W.JOHNSON/SF
W.JOHNSON of Syracuse will be the best outside shooter on the team next year if we draft him for the three spot rotation with J.Hayes.
Free agents are not needed because it will kill us to sign B.LOPEZ/C.D-ROBERTS/C.LEE to extensions very soon.

@Big Tom Says:
Stop the worry about Prokhorov. The team is a wealthy ownership group already with or without him. They are not going to be foolish with free agency and ruin what young core has been built in two very short years.
Prokhorov is a smart businessman whom will listen how to make this team a championship team in Brooklyn for many years just like the Yankees. Over price free agents will not be the answer when you have to pay for your core guys soon enough in the next three years. Look at the mistakes Philly made with E.Brand. LEARN FROM MISTAKES OF OTHER TEAMS. Now buying young high draft picks would work because you are always getting talent while your core guys keep on improving. It is my opinion L.James stays in Cleveland or goes to L.A. Clippers. D.Wade will stay in Miami or go home to Chicago. C.Bosh will go to Miami with D.Wade or to Chicago with D.Wade. A.Stodimere will stay in Phoenix or join NYK. Getting any of these guys will only hinder our signing of our core young guys along with keeping us from winning a chapionship or two. Free agency is not worth it based on how well this team has change for the future in two short years. Rod/Kiki did a great job along with ownership listening to them to get this way.

Oh let me correct myself about L.James.
He has to worry about winning a champioship this year in Cleveland.
As for next year free agency. He might stay in Cleveland, go to the N.Y.Knicks or head out to L.A.Clippers wonderland.
If he stays in Cleveland maybe A.Stodimeir will follow him.
But I am betting on the L.A.Clippers wonderland. WHY? B.DAVIS/E.GORDON/C.KAMAN/M.CAMBY/B.GRIFFIN and Diva L.James. That is a sick L.A. Showtime team to along with L.A.Lakers.
by Dziedzic on Dec 7, 2009 10:14 AM EST reply actions
@ Dziedzic – Why would he want to go to the Clippers? They are going nowhere.

What are you talking about.
PF/B.Griffin SF/L.James C/C.Kaman SG/E.Gordon PG/B.Davis
Add a brench and this is a pretty good team.
Besides he has a office for business set up there on top of it all.
The only team they have to watch out for is L.A.Lakers.
