Nets Beat Knicks For Win No. 3

The Nets ended their 10-game losing streak and got their first easy win of the season Wednesday night at the Izod Center, running past the Knicks, 104-95. The Nets shot 62 percent in the first half and took control of the game with a 17-6 run in the second quarter. They led by as many as 18 points in the third and the Knicks never really threatened after that. The Nets shot 51 percent for the game with six players in double-figures. Brook Lopez (21 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks) and Yi Jianlian (22 points, six rebounds and two blocks) led the way, while Devin Harris added 17 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.

good win, this was an easy trap game to predict. I knew we’d lose. You had been playing better and D’Antoni played the starters in the fourth quarter last night so everybody was winded.

Yi looks good on offense.

haha 3-29…I’ll take it. The Knicks were tired and we capitalized. Yi looked great again.

How good is David Lee?

Love having 5 scorers in the starting 5. CDR makes a huge difference, we really could have beaten the Rockets had he played.

Lets see if the good play continues.. Like I’ve been saying all season, Yi brings is important to this team! They’ve played significantly better since his return!

by 1milord on Dec 30, 2009 10:04 PM EST reply actions

The ONE good thing I saw DH do from a leadership stand point that I liked was when he told Yi to take the shot on that Jeffries technical. I thought that was a good way to keep that confidence high. If only Devin had that kinda attitude all season and stop acting like a diva. Great game for our starting bigs, Yi with a few blocks, but he still needs to work on those hands… Fumbled a pass or two.

by JB on Dec 30, 2009 10:05 PM EST reply actions

Ugly 4th quarter, but a WIN!

CDR is the game changer. He should ask for the ball down the stretch.

Loved how Yi and Lopez played. They still need a lot of work though.

by rknine on Dec 30, 2009 10:05 PM EST reply actions

isnt it strange that the game the nets win and are aggressive in doesnt feature josh boone, sean williams, or rafer alston.

our 3 liabilites didnt play and that really helped. If this rotation stays constant and these players stay healthy… were a pretty good team!!!!

Great win! They were finally able to sustain a lead in the 4th quarter, finally!!! I do think the Knicks were tired out from playing in Detroit last night, but we’ll take the win. Everyone played well, even when the Knicks cut it to 10. Unfortunately, here comes Lebron on Saturday.

by daft on Dec 30, 2009 10:11 PM EST reply actions

First things first, the lack of Alston really helps. Great coaching decision to keep him away from things.

And all this talk about Brook being terrible, he made the whole game without doing too much of the whole forcing the shots garbage, but about the 4:30 mark, he had one of the worst ones yet. It looked like he was on ice just tumbling and chucked it up like that. Right then and there I thought it was over, when the Knicks were pushing hard. Phew.

by Andy on Dec 30, 2009 10:25 PM EST reply actions

Not only did we win but the best way possible. Led by the front court on offense and defense. 51% from the field and an inside presence. 6 blocks from Yi and Lopez. Yi is playing great! Crunch, crunch. That’s me eating my words. You really have to give the coaches credit. Next up the Cavs. Lets shock the world.

Nice game, if harris would just defer a little in the fourth quarter maybe Lopez and Yi would have gone for 50 together.

Best game of the season.

by Seeker on Dec 30, 2009 10:38 PM EST reply actions

If Yi keeps getting better he’s going to be hard to guard because he’s so tall and is using both hands. If Hayes can come back and take Hassell’s minutes, that’s give us another perimiter shooter.

I like how Kiki put Dooling in the game when the Knicks were making their run at the end of the game. Dooling is a calm, confident professional and he’s a good team leader.

A team victory…

by Mike on Dec 30, 2009 10:55 PM EST reply actions

Nice to end the year with a win and specialy against the Knicks. YI is a keeper. Game is a lot easier. Good thing Dooling is back keeps the game a little under control. Nothing too flashy. Harris needs to keep his cool. CDR needs to l;earn how to read the defense. He always gets in awkward position. Needs to learn spacing. He always wants to squeeze himself between defenders which put him on awkward position. But I like his defense, not that bad.
Brooks hustle was something to watch.

by superb on Dec 30, 2009 10:59 PM EST reply actions

A great win to end the year even though the knicks were playing terrible with all the TO’s and the refs really helped us this time. I never thought our Nets are a bad team with the players we have. It is not a championship team but can be competitive. I don’t think Frank is a particularly bad coach either but he’s not good enough to get the max from his players (look at Yi, Lee and CDR) and pull us out of adversities. We need a coach who can gel the team’s talents together, have an identity and win close games. If this team can stay together and fight thru the adversity this year, we will have something very special for years to come. Have to give credits to all these kids. It’s not easy to perform after all the crap they have taken from the fans and media. What a shame it is when some fans vent out their frustrations by personal attacks on young people who try to make a living.

by bill on Dec 30, 2009 11:02 PM EST reply actions

Yi may have a rough shooting game coming up on Saturday but I am thinking that, unlike before, he is not going to let it carry over. Varejao is not going to let him post up without whacking him around. If it happens all the Yi naysayers may come back but they will look like the Brook naysayers did today.

Talking about team identity. When Frank was here I think it got stolen when Collins was traded. He couldn’t duplicate Collins achievement. He tried to clone Collins using Sean williams, Boone, Kristic, Anderson and also Brookes. But you know what happen only the frenchmen do that, Frank is kaput. Now Kiki is the man, and hopefully will get Anthony and another star maybe Lebron too. Wow Lets go NETS.

BREAKDOWN TIME (RAtings 1-10 1 being worst 10 being best)

Jarvis Hayes: NA (Can’t wait to have him back. Replacing Hassell with Hayes is going to make us even better!)
Tony Battie: NA (Pretty sad story, he’s a great guy and probably won’t see much playing time anymore. Maybe we can find a contending team for him)
Josh Boone: NA(I don’t mind him, but he does slow down the pace big-time)
Rafer Alston: NA (THANK GOD HE DIDNT PLAY! OMG OMG OEPFdajopifjdopsiajfd!!!)
Sean Williams: NA (He’s got some good weed)
B. Simmons/E. Najera NA (I COULD CARE LESS)
T. Hassell: 6 (Solid work defensively. Can’t wait till Hayes replaces him)
TWill: 6 (He’s making fewer mental errors. Decent defensively)
K. Dooling: 9 (He doesnt look flashy in the box score, but he may have been the reason we won tonight. kept things under control & made some HUGE shots)
C. Lee: 7 (Great perimeter D tonite)
CDR: 8 (This guy is going to be a STAR for a very long time)
D-lightning: 6 (Decent job. Finishing layups seperates him from being a fast wild PG and an elite PG)
B. Lopez: 8 (Great bounce-back game, but calm down, he was facing midgets out there)
Y. Jianlian: 8 (People need to stop comparing him to Dirk. He’s much better than Dirk.)
J. Wall: 10 (Great job giving us Nets fans motivation for continuing to watch this season)

Yi-normous win tonite! Domination offensively by the twin towers. Lots aggressive paint attacks an scoring. Best of all, when the offense sputtered in the 4q, the defense stepped it up, there was a sequence where the Knicks continually failed to even get a shot off.

Nice to be at the game and watch the Nets shut up the Knicks fans in the crowd. Also nice, I sold a ticket for $10 to a scalper which I had paid only $5 for. Also, they had $2 sodas at the concession, who knew?

My girlfriend and I went out to dinner and such tonight and I promised her I wouldn’t ask her to check the score over and over like I usually do if I can’t catch the game (she has an iphone). We went to a bar later and I had taped the game so I was avoiding looking at highlights and scores on the TV’s and such, but I couldn’t resist. I saw the final score and smiled for like the next 4 hours. She knew the score but held it back, knowing I wanted that DVR magic. What a great game. Watching it now. I;m gonna et a Yi jersey.

by Will J on Dec 31, 2009 2:24 AM EST reply actions

Forget waiting for free agency…how about we trade Simmons for Corey Maggette? The salaries work, GS would get out from under his long contract and get an expiring contract, and we get someone to play SF along with CDR. We certainly have 25 minutes a game for this guy and he can really score. Or….nobody talks about the Knick’s Al Harrington, he’s only 30, and can really score from the SF spot, but we’d have to wait till off season to sign him as a FA. Comments?

by Paul Erstein on Dec 31, 2009 2:41 AM EST reply actions

I wouldn’t mind the Harrington free agent pickup after all other options are exhausted. He won’t cost too much coin and is a tough matchup on the floor.

Let’s go Nets!

by femdig on Dec 31, 2009 4:41 AM EST reply actions

Enjoyed the win. Yi is putting together a nice string of good games here. Hopefully he keeps it up and I think he will. Brook and CDR looked good. Harris is playing better, only took the one three pointer and he actually made it. Also he gave the ball up a bit more which I like to see and he kept possessions alive through rebounding and hussle. I want to see more of that from him because he is too one dimensional for most of this season. Will enjoy seeing Hayes come back because we still need that three point shooter, and he can provide that along with some clutch shooting, especially down the stretch. He can take Hassell’s minutes. And I like how Kiki is using TWill, sort of the second wing player off the bench, just utilizing him situationally in order to maximize his benefit out there and grow his confidence slowly over time.

Those two Knick potential free agents – Harrington and D.Lee – both would help our team a lot. If we can get either one as our ‘second get’ after we get someone else, we would be sitting pretty next season. Also I’m counting on getting a stud in the draft…

by Chris2 on Dec 31, 2009 6:44 AM EST reply actions

@Panareal

they also gave up Dirk too, they are good at it.

by goat6 on Dec 31, 2009 7:12 AM EST reply actions

Those that watched Yi over the summer fopr China noticed the differnce, although it appears it was on the start of the transformation. Since returning to duting he has improved even further.

Never doubted Brook. So he had a couple of below par games, the guys got it.

CDR, what can you say, the guy is a below the radar super star in the making.

Lee, getting his game back. As the team grows in confidence so has he.

Harris is doing just fine. He has been out with injury, comes back into the worst of time and found it tough going. Who wouldn’t! Again as the team starts to function as a unit he will grow and grow. He will be more effective now that the scoring can come from 4 other positions.

Dooling, got love him. He is pure pro.

by Scott on Dec 31, 2009 7:55 AM EST reply actions

All I ask for in this NBA season of dramatically low expectations is that we beat the Knicks. Thank you Nets for that gift.

But honestly, the only reason we held on the 4th was that the Knicks looked like they were playing with mittens on. They could not hold onto the ball and get a shot up for a long stretch. And even so they got the lead down into single digits. We’d take the ball down the court, miss, and I thought the tide had turned against us. But then the Knicks would dribble it off a foot, pass it out of bounds, pass behind a cutting player, etc. Thank goodness there’s another team more incompetent than us.

@ Chris – Why do you want to pay David Lee $10mil? No thanks. Yeah he is talented but he isnt worth $10 mil. First his #s are padded because he plays on the Knicks. Second, his defense is still suspect.

I like Yi
But he is still not as good as Al Harrington
He does not know how to play D
He is so so slow compare to Harrington
He need to learn how to get rebonds

by yi fans on Dec 31, 2009 12:10 PM EST reply actions

True, Yi is lacking defense. I think he needs to make it more of a point to grab boards. I’ve seen him just stand there and watch the ball sometimes.

However, on offense, he is very talented. The long arms and his jumper will make him effective. Plus, he is pretty agile and mobile, which will make him a match-up problem to other teams for years. I think the lineup and rotation we have right now is fine. Remember, this is only the THIRD game that the starters have played together. If you watched the game, you can see that the Nets are starting to play with more chemistry. What really stood out to me was the leadership Harris showed tonight. He was under control and when Jefferis got a technical, it was Harris who DEMANDED Yi shoot the T(which he made). Good leadership in understanding who has been hitting free-throws, considering that Harris went 1 for 4 later in the game.

Overall, great game. Let’s see this intensity against the cavs on saturday!

by jj22 on Dec 31, 2009 12:30 PM EST reply actions

@SIC
I think the sentiment concerning David Lee is much too negative. This is a guy who is 26 years old averaging 19 and 11. He can score without needing the ball to go through him. He plays hard every night, he can hit open shots, he has the versatility to play PF and C. This idea that his stats are padded because he plays for the Knicks is blown way out of proportion. Maybe the faster pace adds a couple points and a couple rebounds to the averages, if that. Even then, he is still effective and efficient. The Knicks are hanging with some pretty good teams right now and Lee is the biggest reason why. Its certainly not the Chris Duhon effect.

Now if Yi can continue to be aggressive to the rim, go after the ball, and hustle on defense, then we have something special. I just hope he does not fall back to his old ways. You can’t be passive and be a very good player in this league. This is the first week of Yi basketball that has gotten me excited.

@ Paul B,

AAAAAAAMENNNNN BROTHER! Hopefully, it is sooner than later, so NEW JERSEY can taste their first Championship! The Nets almost had two championships last decade, but, we just did not have the size needed to top Duncan and Shaq. A new year and new decade is upon us and we have an improving BROOOOOOK. Hopefully, we are lucky and swipe John Wall and pair him with Brook and the other young players, we then have the making of something very special.

@PA Net

Who cares if the Knicks didn’t execute at the end, they are the Misfits and are still not really good. Throughout this season, it has been our team who collapses atleast one quarter and finally we put a full game together. We finally have all of our starters healthy and a decent rotation of players throughout the game. We still might not win that many games, but, atleast we can be competitive in games now. The key is developing as a team and having fun again!

I haven’t watched the game yet (it’s on DVR) but two things stood out (besides the win and great overall team performance) on the box score.. we only took 7 3’s? Awesome, I hate when we fall in love with the shot, but that we got out-rebounded.. yet again!!! We need a rebounder at the 3, and behind Yi!! (TyThomas cough TyThomas)

David Lee is a hard worker, but he know he’s a free agent. He’s talked about looking at the score board and padding his stats. Last night, he took a rebound off a teammate.

Overall, a great player but a little undersized at PF/C and it showed last night.

i had to watch the encore to this, especially when we don’t win as much.

I just read some of the articles about this game by Knicks writers… they TRASH the nets. I know we have an awful record, but this was the first time we’ve had our starting 5 since game 2. They talked like the Knicks were the Lakers and the Nets are… well the Nets. But jeez, we didn’t win last night because of a fluke, we won because we had a bunch of HEALTHY guys playing hard and playing together.
