Around SBN: Terry Collins, David Wright, And The Mets/Brewers Kerfuffle

Day One of the Kiki Era

With the Tom Barrise Era mercifully over (for him), Kiki Vandeweghe will get his chance at cracking the Nets' code. They went through a long practice Thursday as he and Del Harris introduced themselves. What's new? Not much, just that the Bobcats are stinging from their meet-up with the Celtics and their coach is unlikely to let up and become an answer to a trivia question. Oh yeah, Chris Douglas-Roberts is upset.

CDR gotta chill out a bit. The way he’s carrying on, he will have a nervous breakdown by the all star break. Let Kiki and Del Harris have the breakdowns, we need you (CDR) on the court.

by Mike on Dec 3, 2009 2:27 PM EST reply actions

Just send CDR home to Detroit. He can score and all but he’s not exactly going to save this team.

CDR to Detroit for Jonas Jerebko and DaJuan Summers sounds good to me.

by Dirt on Dec 3, 2009 2:28 PM EST reply actions

@ Dirt – Agreed, but I was thinking Chris Douglas-Roberts and Sean Williams for Ben Gordon and Ben Wallace.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Dec 3, 2009 2:38 PM EST reply actions

@ Dirt – also, the Nets don’t have enough roster spots to make a trade involving an odd number of players.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Dec 3, 2009 2:39 PM EST reply actions

@ Dirt
C’mon!!!

Other stuff: I have been reading DaveD since it became evident that LF would get fired, and it is sad to say that he is one of those babies who are so in love with LF that he takes it personally. He’s such a weenie! He is way more bitter than LF would ever be about getting fired.

by KJV on Dec 3, 2009 2:39 PM EST reply actions

DaveD also hates the Knicks because they did not kiss his when he was working there. Can someone tell this guy to man up! I loved the guy, don’t get me wrong. I used to read only what he writes, but seriously, he needs to man up.

by KJV on Dec 3, 2009 2:42 PM EST reply actions

What is this “man up” of which you speak? Explain.

by Net Income on Dec 3, 2009 2:51 PM EST reply actions

@dirt you can’t be serious trade cdr an up and coming young player who has yet to become a all star in the future.

by 1milord on Dec 3, 2009 2:53 PM EST reply actions

@ NetIncome
He needs to stop being such a baby.

by KJV on Dec 3, 2009 2:55 PM EST reply actions

I think what this team needs is a coach, I hope if Nets dont do well in a game they have tough practices learning the mistakes in which they did wrong. If they get turn overs the got to run plays till they get it perfect. And the ball has to revolve around Brook.

by Randy Oreens on Dec 3, 2009 2:56 PM EST reply actions

Lmao @ trading CDR, you guys cant be serious

by Andrés on Dec 3, 2009 3:00 PM EST reply actions

"It seems like everybody I talk to … I really just get angrier," CDR said. "It really doesn’t make me better. It’s just, ‘Okay, keep your head in it. Keep playing. … Whatever you do, stay focused.’ I’m really just tired of hearing it, honestly."

He really sounds like a coachable player. Apparently, he knows everything he needs to know, and at the age of 22 he somehow knows everything about himself as a man that he already needs to know.

by Dirt on Dec 3, 2009 3:00 PM EST reply actions

cdr is pissed…maybe if the nets just tell him that the future can only get better he’ll feel better.2010 free agency and the possible #1 pick in the draft. …nah jk

by Andy on Dec 3, 2009 3:03 PM EST reply actions

Trade everyone. Who cares anymore?

by Trenton on Dec 3, 2009 3:11 PM EST reply actions

I don’t min his anger. If Lee, Harris, and Lopez would be as angry right now, then we would start winning some games.
Do any of you huys watch DH’s post-game interviews? I don’t want my leader saying only P.C. things. He does not look like he is that upset about losing. To him, it is like “well, none of us wants to lose, but hey, obviously we’re losing! …what can i say?”

by KJV on Dec 3, 2009 3:13 PM EST reply actions

I meant: I don’t mind his anger

by KJV on Dec 3, 2009 3:14 PM EST reply actions

@ Trenton Says:
Trade Everyone!

Take a deep breqath because next year six guys are gone from this team because of contracts expire.
(R.Alston/T.Battie/T.Hassell/B.Simmons/E.Najera/S.Williams)

This is good don’t you think?

Now getting three more number 1’s in next years draft through trades could put this team in the mix to win 55 games next year along within two a championship in Brooklyn.
So if you are only a New Jersey fan then don’t care. YOu are welcome to care if you are also excited about the move to Brooklyn were they will be winners in a very short time.

@Dirt

Whether CDR sounds like a coachable player to you or not is irrelevant in the face of the differing opinion of former coach Frank, Kiki Vandeweghe and Rod Thorn; each of whom has commended CDR for his work ethic and contribution to the Nets.

CDR has played good basketball during the preseason and regular season so far. He’s not perfect of oourse but neither are you or I. I’m not looking for CDR to be the “savior” for this team or to express his frustration in losing in a certain way. People cope with stress differently. I agree with KJV above that more players need to be angry about losing and then make the extra effort to win.

I am more than pleased with CDR’s overall performance on the court and I must rely on what his coaches and Nets officials publicly have said about his character and play. So far, so good.

Dooling and Hayes are the keys.

by Tim on Dec 3, 2009 4:06 PM EST reply actions

I really don’t mind the anger at all. He’s passionate and proud and all the things that make a successful NBA player. It may appear that I am over reacting, but I’m really just obsessed with the NBA trade machine. Any excuse to use it and I will. If I could pay my bills or compliment my wife by way of the trade machine, I would.

However, IF he ever started to become a problem in the locker room I’d want him gone ASAP. At that point I will proclaim, “Bring me Jerebko!”.

by Dirt on Dec 3, 2009 4:12 PM EST reply actions

Dooling and Hayes were reasons why we won most games last year…they are excellent bench players and I hope they are a part of our future.

by Andy on Dec 3, 2009 4:18 PM EST reply actions

How about CDR calling that time-out because the palyers we being lazy?!! While i do not want players to start doing that every game, i think it is interesting.

by KJV on Dec 3, 2009 4:27 PM EST reply actions

CDR must stay. He, Devin and Brook are the future with whoever joins them. The kid really, REALLY wants to win. Just let him be, and trading him for some Pistons fodder won’t help. Come on now.

KJV: You are so right about the anger issue. They all need to get angry and play some defense. They should all be embarrased, especially the Sacrament game and the game last night. A whole quarter of dunks, layups and open 3’s. Can ANYBODY play some defense!!!

by Joanne on Dec 3, 2009 4:44 PM EST reply actions

I meant the Sacramento game!

by Joanne on Dec 3, 2009 4:45 PM EST reply actions

Iannazzone: "In case you missed it, Douglas-Roberts called timeout in the third quarter of last night’s game. Usually the coach signals to the player, but after the Nets got beat on a break and Douglas-Roberts was the only one back, he looked frustrated and signaled for a timeout.

Devin said it was the first time he saw a player do that."

This was after Kidd stole a pass from CDR to Devin. Devin was the main one who didn’t get back on defense. Is it a coincidence that the team’s overall defense got worse when he returned from injury? And postgame, Devin was the only one who didn’t take responsibility for the 2nd quarter explosion. Rather than saying the Nets screwed up, he talked about what Dallas did well in that quarter.

I like Devin. I just wanna see more leadership from the captain.

by Nevarcano on Dec 3, 2009 4:45 PM EST reply actions

I’m not mad at CDR. I said he would start in a year or two went he fell to us. He has the right to be angry. He is the only one getting back on defense on the fastbreak and that’s why he called the timeout.

Brook Lopez is banging down-low, playing his heart out along with CDR. Devin isn’t slashing as much, he’s settling for the jumper, not his game. Lee can’t get his shot going. And yes, Hayes and Dooling are really missed and Yi is hurt. Hayes, Dooling, T-Will, Boone and Simmons would have gotten the bulk of the minutes off the bench.

What I’m saying is we lost too many of our key players early. They couldn’t build chemistry together. Devin needs to do something as the leader. He needs to tell the team to play harder, they need to run. Hopefully Kiki and Del can help get the point across.

by Garry on Dec 3, 2009 4:50 PM EST reply actions

Stay strong and don’t blow up CDR! It makes your reputation stronger in the long run.

by mt57 on Dec 3, 2009 4:53 PM EST reply actions

@ Nevarcano – Agree, but what Douglas-Roberts did just shows a lack of respect for the coaching staff. I think Courtney Lee, Keyon Dooling, or Terrence Williams should be captain until Harris starts taking responsibility for his own play.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Dec 3, 2009 4:56 PM EST reply actions

Anyone who is thinking of trading cdr for junk doesn’t deserve to be a nets fan!

Cdr is the best player on this team at the moment.

If Lopez had his fire he would be a monster on the boards.

Devin needs a kick in the ass. He is a good player but doesn’t like to work hard.

Cdr better keep that starting role too. I don’t care if lee is healthy.

Trading CDR is crazy. CDR should be the captain of this team. He reminds me of Derek Jeter in a way – in that he HATES to lose. He plays his heart out every night. He will say in postgame interviews that he does not care how many points he scored or what his stats were – and only winning matters. That type of attitude and team first attitude is what makes Jeter one of the greatest of all time. Not saying CDR is destined for the Hall of Fame – but this kid is going to be a very important piece for the future of this team. The Nets should look to resign him this summer – and lock him into a 6 year deal.

Players like CDR are what makes championships.

by Ryan243 on Dec 4, 2009 1:05 AM EST reply actions

@ Ryan243 Says:

You are correct Ryan about C.D-Roberts. Yes he is our new Kerry Kittles at the two. Just like Kittles, he can run the floor, defend, pass the ball and put in 15 to 20 a night. D.Harris and C.D-Roberts as I said along are a great starting pair for the next five years. Now don’t bring up C.Lee again. C.Lee can be the main option when the second unit comes in so there is no drop off in scoring. Oh this is how you win with balance. Did you ever notice when Kittles went down to injury how the team started loosing. V.Carter was not the answer. A half court player and no defense to talk about and would score and shoot us out of games. balance in his game was not there unlike Kittles and now D-Roberts.

by Dziedzic on Dec 4, 2009 9:57 AM EST reply actions

CDR makes the least amount of money on this team, and alongside Lopez cares the MOST about what happens on that court. That should tell you a lot right there. This is a guy that the Nets need on the roster, someone that wants to play hard every night and WIN. This is the type of attitude that got us to two NBA Finals, not that ho hum we lost garbage we some from Harris every night while he pounds the air out of the ball, takes god awful shots, ruins team chemistry, and refuses to play defense.

Calling that time out was a sign of immaturity, but I don’t blame him. The man is upset and there is a clear cut lack of effort. The alleged “leader” of this team couldn’t give a damn. The people talking about “trade CDR” or bashing him sound absolutely foolish. To me, the Nets fans that constantly bash CDR are the ones that are perfectly okay with mediocrity. CDR is not the problem here. You want to find a problem on this poorly assembled roster start with #34 and work your way down. I don’t want to hear any garbage about Lopez or CDR, period. These guys are killing themselves out there and have 0 wins to show for it, if one of them express frustration, GOOD. Shows me that they care. If you want to spend your hard earned money on watching primadonnas that don’t care, find, but I’d rather watch guys that want to win games and worry about being “P.C.” later.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Dec 4, 2009 11:30 AM EST reply actions

CDR cant be captain until he matures more. It’s good he has the fire and wants to win, but you also cant undermine the coaching staff and have public arguments with the coaching staff. The same fire that makes him a competitor can be the same fire that ends up burning him instead.

by TheMann on Dec 4, 2009 11:35 AM EST reply actions

I agree. He’s only 22 years old and he will learn.

With that said, you want someone that won’t take mediocrity lying down, but that will get up and fight.

But it’s disturbing to me that the immature 22 year old has more competitive fire and seems more emotionally invested in this team’s success than the 26 year old who was made captain and gets paid 1000x more than he does.

CDR shouldn’t be the one saying rightfully that the team has no heart, and that they just roll over and lay down. The Captain should be calling this stuff out, but seeing that the captain’s play or attitude aren’t exactly stellar, he would look like a fool doing so.

CDR saying the stuff that he said the other night was no different than Jason Kidd saying that the team “lets go of the rope” when things get tough. I’m glad we finally drafted a kid that doesn’t want to let go of rope until his hands are burned, and even then some.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Dec 4, 2009 11:49 AM EST reply actions

CDR cares. If the rest of the Nets cared like CDR we wouldn’dt be 0-18, but this is the NBA and thats the way the league is. The rest of the season will tell us who else really cares. Those are the ones that the Nets need to keep and build around along with the 2010 no. 1. (The biggest decision by this franchise since the Kidd trade)

CDR is on my team any day, but he still needs to get a lot better, keep his head up, catch and go, stop pounding the ball so much and work on his outside shot. As many have mentioned he appears to be an ideal 6th man

by netsnuts on Dec 4, 2009 11:57 AM EST reply actions

@ superb – Yes he should start, but over Terrence Williams and not Courtney Lee.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Dec 4, 2009 12:18 PM EST reply actions

caring alone isn’t going to do it. the team has to be trained and conditioned to work together to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts. we’re nowhere close to that point.

by JT on Dec 4, 2009 12:26 PM EST reply actions

@ TheMann – Agreed, Keyon Dooling, Rafer Alston, or Brook Lopez should assume that title.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Dec 4, 2009 12:35 PM EST reply actions

@Mr Dollar Bills Says:

There is no problem with Devin Harris. He is one of the top seven fastest guys in this league called the NBA.
CDR and Devin will form a solid twosome for the next six years as this team grows into a championship team in Brooklyn. brooklyn people will love CDR and his game. CDR is from Detroit. If you ever played in Detroit B-Ball, they play serious ball out there on the streets. Its not carnival ball like Rucker Park has become.
