Nets Fall Apart in Second Half

The Nets were done in by one of their cold spells Monday night at the Izod Center, falling to the Thunder 105-89. It was a high-scoring affair most of the way and the Nets took the lead with a 9-0 run midway through the third quarter. They trailed by just one after a Yi Jianlian bucket with 3:40 left in the period, but then scored just two points in a 9:50 span that lasted until there were less than six minutes to go in the game. By that time, they were down 16 and the game was out of reach. Yi tied a career high with 29 points and Devin Harris finished with a double-double, but Kevin Durant led all scorers with 40 points and the Thunder outrebounded the Nets 43-33 and outscored them 33-20 at the free throw line.

Yi played well. But what the Nets miss is what Oklahoma has which is a stud that can take over a game. The Nets need all of their players to play well and that hasn’t happened yet this season. These games are hard to watch!

What did kiki do to YI! Was Frank that bad of coach?

Yi is the only bright side.
This team really sucks, they can’t score at some point.

I feel bad for Yi for not getting 30+ points. Nets guards were horrible. Devin is talking leader but he should have known that Yi has a chance to get 30 but didn’t make any plays for him down the line.
Why they pass the ball across the court is a mystery to me. Nets offense runs better with Rafa than with Devin.

If you told me that Hassell shot 6-8, Yi shot 11-20 and Lee shot 7-13, then I would tell you that the Nets won the game. Watching loss after loss is heartbreaking. There are some good individual performances, but as a team, we can’t put it together. Yi apparently has the green light to shoot whenever he wants.
It’s good to see Nenad back playing well. I always liked that guy.

Kevin Durant is just too big and skillful. But with Yi showing up that’s something to watch. without him the game could had been over just on first half.

Lopez is Jason Collins. Just awful. And he is a cry baby who pouts and silks. Grow up Brook! Decide what kind of player you are! Nice move Rod with Kristic, exactly what the Nets could use someone who can hit a jumper… And if it wasn’t for some Hassle circus shots this would have been worse. Just terrible, except Yi.

Before anyone gets carried away w/Yikes’ career high 29 points, let’s not forget about his MINUS 17 and the plethora of dunks he gave up to Durant.
Brook was equally atrocious on D. In fact I haven’t seen anyone give up on as many plays (on offense, defense, even while awaiting a rebound on a missed foul shot) as Brook did tonight. Absolutely pathetic. Trenton Hassel was their lone bright spot, guess that says it all.

How could they play so well for 3 quarters and do just about everything wrong in the fourth! Everyone contributed to the debacle in the 4th. Bad defense, bad offense, no rebounding – just awful!!! Just stand there and let the other team dunk on you, layups on you. Just embarassing!

I also hate Brook’s demeanor. “TheBurgerking” is right, he is always sulking out there on the floor. The guy is slow off the floor and doesn’t have basketball quickness, which is while i feel he’ll never be great. Smaller players are quicker to the ball than him which is why he gets outrebounded. Yi’s return was supposed to open things up for Brook but for some reason it has had the opposite effect.

What’s wrong with you guys? No one else is down on Lopez?? Did we see the same game?
by TheBurgerking on Dec 28, 2009 10:33 PM EST reply actions
Break it down:
CDR: DNP, we need him back for some scoring down the stretch of games.
J. Hayes: DNP, when are we getting him back?! he doesnt seem too excited to get back on the floor. at least he can hit some shots. his defense wont be 2 good after being out so long.
J. Boone: DNP, his absence really showed in how NICK COLLISON, yeah, NICK COLLISON, took us to school 2nite with 11 & 10.
S. Williams: DNP, I doubt he would’ve made a difference. Would’ve been niec to see during garbage time last 5 mins.
T. Williams: WHAT. HAPPENED. Didn’t score, passed the ball decently but still turned it over several times. Took a few bad jump shots. Defense was atrocious. Passed off when he had an open driving layup. Needs to show up more than 1 out of every 9 games.
B. Simmons: Could’ve helped with our jump-shooting, dont know why he played. wouldve been awful on “D”
E. Najera: DNP, trade him for a bag of Chex Mix
R. Alston: AWFUL. AWFUL. AWFUL. That one play where he came flying down the court after a turnover just to take a wild pull-up jumper – and brick it – epitomizes his game.
K. Dooling: A non-factor. Played for 21 mins and was 1-5. Did not have any energy tonight.
T. Battie: An all-around decent job. Filled in decently for Boone.
B. Lopez: He’s much better than that. He’s obviously breaking down mentally. It’s apparent that Yi’s reappearance has diminished his game physically – and maybe has hurt him mentally too
D. Harris: 3-8 from the field, but played decently defensively and had some nice drives. This summer, this guy NEEDS to work on his jump-shot. It is AWFUL.
T. Hassell: Very good job. Good defense, good shooting, nice passes, key rebounds. He’ll make a great trade piecee.
C. LEE: Good job. Alright ‘D’ … still needs to make wide-open corner threes (he only made 1-4?)
Yi: Big-time bright spot. His jump-shot has improved, but he did take a few wild ones. Towards the end of the game, his jump-shot becomes less efficient – it will get better as his conditioning improves. He MUST improve his “D” … right now its well below avg
We suck.

Look, face it, Proky is gonna absolutely clean house when he comes in. Lopez is our current and future starting Center. period. Yes, he has his defensive limitations, but we have to adjust to that. Lopez is higher priority than Yi. That means we Proky will need to pair Lopez with a real strong PF. Whatever happens to Yi (6th man or traded or moved to SF) so be it. But Yi and Lopez cannot be paired together up front. For every offensive point you gain, you give up 1.5. When it comes to building a team, Lopez takes priority over Yi.

I love how Lopez forced his first 2 or 3 shots… literally just barreled his way into the lane and “chucked” it up… then He clumsily and unathletically got some quick fouls. THEEEEN when he was on the bench, he sulked, disrespected the coach, and worst of all, showed no support for his teammates. Brook just sat there with a frown on his face while the entire bench was cheering Lee as he skied for that awesome ally oop.

Thunder are a young, talented team. They are more talented than the Nets. One of the reasons they are much better this year is that Durant is becoming a “Tier 1” player. Most NBA teams need at least one. Nets don’t have one at the moment.
by NetsSince76 on Dec 28, 2009 10:47 PM EST reply actions
I’m giving Brook a pass because he’s not talented enough to get double and triple teamed and still be productive. Then he gets early fouls and got frustrated. He’s the only player that has played in every one of these losses.
@brooklynjohnny
Hassell and TWill were guarding Durant not Yi. Yi did more than his share in trying to win this game and looks like he’s going to make a lot of people eat their words.
Durant plays just like The Iceman, George Gervin. Especially on that finger roll over Yi. Sweet..

Lopez needs to mature. His body language is terrible and he lets the referees take him out of the game mentally. You can turn a nets game on in the third quarter and if you dont know the score you can tell how the game is going for Lopez just by how body language is.
It looks to me like the frustration of losing is really getting to him. Pushing Kiki’s hand away was wrong and he should have been benched for that. There are stories about his brother’s attitude in Phoenix and I guess he has a little bit of that in him as well.

As for tonight’s game, another posted hit it on the head. This team just cant put a full game together. They dont have a bread and butter set or play they can go to get a basket when they are having trouble scoring. They have droughts in every game but arent able to rely on their defense to keep them in the game when it does.
It’s the same script every night. This team looks like it’s going to set the record for worst record ever, and probably shatter it. What will they get out of it? A 25% chance at the #1 pick. Terrible. The NBA needs to either abolish the lottery all together or make the odds much better for the team with the worst record.

People need to relax with the Lopez stuff. The guy is in his second year. RELAX!!!!
As for Yi, clearly he needed a coaching change. Now it is up to this coaching staff to give Yi free reign but to also balance it out with Lopez. Clearly we all know this team needs a PF/C that can Defend and Rebound, Player X. To balance the team out you need substitution patterns like, Yi/Player X and Player X/ Lopez, so Yi is the offensive big and Player X is the defense and the same goes with Lopez. We dont need a scoring PF/C.
As for Hassel, Alston, and Batie, Is it me or are these guys taking too many shots? If they are trying to secure a New Contract with another team, These guys have to GO NOW!!!! Hassel seems to force shots. Why cant he be like Bowen. Defend and IF, ONLY IF, you are open you take the shot.
As for Twill, Rookie mistakes but at least he is trying to take it to the rim more then shoot. I like Twill with the breaking down the defense and passing the Ball. If we had A PG that did that instead, Cough, WALL, Cough, these young guys would be better off.

I like the way Hassell and Dooling played and they give the team veteran leadership. We are lacking that star player, however. Hopefully, we can get that player in next years draft AND/OR in free agency with all that cap room we have. I have a feeling it will be through the draft though. Lucky for us, is that this draft may have a stud player in Wall. Many drafts don’t have that player. As for Brook, he will be fine. Every player has bad stretches and I am sure the losses are eating away at him.

Both Lopez and Yi, two 7s are NETS future. Lopez plays as center with good basketball IQ. Yi plays as PF with athelic moving skill. Now the problem to NETS’ coach, is to find out a best way to use these two guys on court at same time.
Regarding defensive, it is a team job. You cannot give all bad to these two guys, because they are they are last defense position in the center. Actually NETS defense problem is from outside.
by fplc on Dec 29, 2009 1:58 AM EST reply actions
Bring Yi off the bench for the sake of Brook Lopez. As much as I’m a fan of Yi, he’s not going to be playing this good consistently for the rest of the season. He will gas out on back-to-backs and get bullied by the elite PFs of the league. I think to maintain Yi’s confidence, bring him off the bench so he can get more shots without disrupting the shots of the starters.
Play either Boone (when healthy) or Swat alongside Brook Lopez. I think it would work. Swat might be horrible on offense, but without some adequate PT he can’t develop.
With Yi coming off the bench, play Tony Battie at Center. Battie is a big veteran whose played with a winning team and has already had a role of helping his fellow big man. I think those lineups will work better.
Brook Lopez will start to have the Andrew Bynum syndrome, meaning if he’s not getting enough touches and not scoring (while his other teammate is playing well) he’ll just stop caring.
by Dont Taze Me Bro! on Dec 29, 2009 2:05 AM EST reply actions
I love how after 2 games Brook Lopez has “lost it” and doesn’t support the team in morale. To me his eyes had the look of being sick and it would explain his energy level and execution. I don’t think this is some major revelation, like Yi is back so now Lopez has forgot how to score somehow. I suppose once Chris comes back he’ll be back to his rookie numbers? Doubt it. A day is coming soon when we will finally put 5 double figure point scorers in the starting lineup and chemistry will have to be found with that group on both ends.

Forget about Lebron, use the cap space to get Durant, does anyone think that Kiki could use the new owner’s cash to wave a K-Mart type deal at Durant for 2011-12? Could OKC’s ownership match, they of should if they could.

A good friend of mine got free tickets from Yormark for the game and he said there was about 9k people in the arena, he laughed at the 15K announced attendance, don’t believe it.

T-Mac is no longer an all-star-calibre player.

Brook has shown a lot but he is a second year guy and is prone to ups and downs. Over the long run, he will be a monster. Opposing teams swarm him and it’s difficult for him to work with no real support.
As for Swat, give it up. He’s a bonehead, will not play much and will most likely be gone by or at the end of the season.

Yi Jianlian is not on the same level of Shaq (in his prime) or Lebron James, so to compare them to Yi that’s an insult right there. Yi Jianlian might be having his hot streak, but we’ve seen him do this before and then crawl in his shell and never come back out. What’s wrong with bringing Yi off the bench? We all know that Brook Lopez, Courtney Lee, Devin Harris, and whoever is starting wants to score. Even with Yi having these offensive explosions, his defense isn’t getting any better.
It’s not like the Nets are winning a load of games since Yi’s comeback, I don’t see the problem with experimenting and seeing which lineups fits well playing together.

I don’t care if there were only 9,000 (which judging by tv was more like 12-13 thousand). That is still about 8000 more than should have been there when the owner tells the fans the team is moving and the “team” has TWO WINS in late December thanks to him!!!
