Still Down, But Yi Gives Some Hope

ESPN's Marc Stein wants you to know that if the Nets continue at their current pace, they'll wind up 5-77. So he ranks the Nets #30. No surprise. So does his colleague John Hollinger. The NBA's John Schuhmann makes it unanimous, but points to some good news out there: Yi Jianlian's first two games back. "When you're 2-28, you have to take solace in a couple of strong individual performances."

For the Nets fans on this site who continue to use injuries as an excuse for the near winless nets , keep in mind , Portland has Lost thier starting and back up center for the year and they are on a 4 game winning streak and are currently the # 4 seed in the tough west. . The rockets are with out thier top 2 scorers , thier all-star center and thier all-star shooting guard and still they are currently the 7 seed in the tough west….

The Rockets are A GOOD BASKETBALL TEAM.
No stars, just get the job done, and you have to appreciate a team like that.
The thing with the Nets is that they sucked to begin with. ANY injury and the talent depth plummets. If we had everyone, we’d probably be 9-21 rather than 2-28. not a huge difference.

There are many reasons to blame to our lack of success, and although injuries are a small part of it, it certainly isn’t the only reason and our poor start can’t be attributed to just that.
- We don’t have a true point guard.
- Nobody could knock down shots.
- Aside from Lopez, we don’t have a post player.
- Our defensive bigs are slow and not very athletic, or in the case of Sean Williams just don’t know how to play basketball, and thus we are doing a poor job of help defense.
- All of our PGs, SGs, and SFs except for Lee, Hassell, and Dooling (who has barely played until recently because of injury) are anywhere from bad to attrocious defenders.
- We lack a true veteran leader, something we have had every year past.
- There is no go-to scorer when we need points at the end of games. We could have won a few games, such as the Miami game if this was not the case.
- Our front office, ownership, and coaching staff has been very chaotic this year with the selling of the team, the firing of Frank, and the possible move to Brooklyn. So let’s see, we have a very young team of players full of egos, no leader on the court, and no leader from the coaching staff. Hmm…
- The few veterans we do have are cashing in big money and don’t care about how they play. Bobby Simmons anybody?
- Big egos by the young players on the team (Devin Harris, Courtney Lee crying all summer coming to NJ, CDR talking about how the players hating each other, TWill and his antics, etc.)
If anybody can add on to the list feel free. Quite frankly, I’m surprised we have even 2 wins at this point. This may have been one of the worst constructed teams ever.

no doubt that morale and attitiude are playing a role at this point. The key to all this is that DH just doesn’t seem motivated or he is slightly hampered by his injury. Yes Carter made a big difference, but this time last year DH was blowing by everybody in the league, nailing open jumpers, and getting comparisons to AI. This year zilch. Something is wrong. Granted if he was playing like last year we’d still only have 7 to 10 wins, but hey we only won 34 with Carter last year.
This team has no motivaqtion, no hope, they are a lame duck franchise. The good news is they have a lot more in place than teams that have been in this situation or even Minnesota, or the Knicks for that matter. And guys like CDR, Lopez, dH, they are winners, so this will all turn around next year. Only 6 months until John Wall day.

This is what the Nets need to do to fix this mess:
1) Clear a ton of cap space.
2) Stockpile draft picks.
3) Get a new owner who cares and has billions of dollars.
4) Build a new fan-friendly arena.
5) Put together a young, talented core.
But nobody ever listens to me, so none of this will never happen.

@DanTheMan
Whats your point?
I’m not a fair weather fan. I rock my Nets T-shirts(in Boston) as much as I can, and I watch them on league pass every game.
I cant stand these “fans” who constantly beat the team down, like they are some other teams fans. If I like something, I usually don’t talk crap about that thing. “yeah the Nets SUCK! I cant stand em! But they are my favorite team!” I don’t get it.

Yeah, the Rockets are doing “nice”. They are one of those teams that will make the playoffs, then what?
You don’t really want to be “one of those teams”. The Nets for awhile were “one of those teams”.
“All or Nothing at All”
Rhymes with Wall or nothing but Wall.
I don’t want to be Utah, Orlando,Portland, etc.
I want to be Champ…
2nd best is just like all the rest…

@Tim
I agree with you. I see posters here who seem to only come on this site to discuss at length how impossibly bad the Nets are, then purport to be “fans”. I can appreciate the posters who talk about the need to be realistic about the team’s negatives; but who also post to applaud team effort or individual players skills. I too wonder about those “fans” who use this site to incessantly “beat the team down”. Maybe they just like to see themselves in print.

@Jeff;
I agree with your comments. The only correction is that we are not in print, we are in cyberspace. Where everything disappears, once it is posted….
Here this second, gone the next…

Mike, 2nd best is like the rest? as a sports fan, you rather your team sit in last place than fight in the playoffs? oh, you must have boo’d our 2 wins. ok…
by JohnY on Dec 28, 2009 8:49 PM EST reply actions
@ JohnY
I get what Mike is saying.. most folks would probably take one championship and four trips to the playoffs preceded by sucking for three years, over perpetually losing in the first or second round. We are positioned to actually be a contender, if we could get one or two stars in free agency. If we kept on a bit more payroll, maybe we’d be that first round and out and doomed to repeat team.
But no more of this. This, right now, sucks.
