Time to Deal?

The time between Dec. 15, when players signed in the off-season can be traded, and Feb. 19, the trade deadline, is the most active for deal making. The Nets have done nothing since Vince Carter was dealt in June. Why? An edict from team owners not to spend money. When Mikhail Prokhorov arrives, that edict (presumably) gets lifted. What assets do the Nets have to deal if he takes over before Feb. 19? We take a look.

Try everything to get Anthony Randolph !!! Even if we have to ship Yi for him….

by Gyniko on Dec 27, 2009 3:21 PM EST reply actions

So Yi has two good games, the equal of Randolph’s best back to back games this season and you want to trade him right now…no wait, no fuss, no bother.

There is a reason why Randolph is available. Never ever forget that. When you see someone who is that talented and that young and that cheap being offered, that should tell you something.

by Net Income on Dec 27, 2009 3:31 PM EST reply actions

But numbers don’t lie…of course Yi had good games and i really like him but Anthony Randolph is so much more of an all around player who we badly needed over the past years.

Yes it is indeed suspicious that he plays limited minutes but we gotta be honest: Don Nelson has problems with nearly every of his players….

So I’m thinking this way: Another team, another chance, better stats.

by Gyniko on Dec 27, 2009 3:38 PM EST reply actions

Don’t kill me for this, but it’s just an idea. If Gilbert is available, we can trade Simmons and Battie plus picks (not this year’s first) for him straight up. Obviously, this goes against everything we’ve been working on, but basically we get a superstar for nothing and then have 4 point guards available in a trade.

Again, not saying we should do this by any means, but I just saw that Gil might be available and the salaries matched…

I’m also for keeping Dooling….and Hassell…..Both are EXCELLENT back ups who also fill in well as starters….Love their Efforts..Keepers..

NI, Slight typo, I believe, “No team has more expiring contracts and more money in expiring contracts than any other team.” “…than the Nets”?

Don’t trade Yi at this point, certainly not for Randolph. If he can play consistently like he did the last couple of games and not make the boneheaded mistakes, he’s the best player on the team.

by PA Net on Dec 27, 2009 4:48 PM EST reply actions

^Don’t try to make Randolph into some horribly flawed prospect. He has his problems but he’s a blue chip talent. He’s available because of the well documented schism between the GS front office and coaching staff.

by God on Dec 27, 2009 4:55 PM EST reply actions

Randolph, yes. He can post up and play outside and can rebound very well. He will add much more to our PF rotation. He is more well rounded than Soft Yi.

by Net Income on Dec 27, 2009 5:13 PM EST reply actions

@Yao
If he is good, why is he being shopped…and aggressively? Yi is soft? That guy who went to the rim nine times last night, dunking and getting hammered as he did? Was that not Yi? Both Randolph and Yi average four trips to the line per game, by the way.

by Net Income on Dec 27, 2009 5:25 PM EST reply actions

@ NetFan48

Agreed. KD is a leader and quality backups like him dont come along very often. We missed a quality backup PG when he had Kidd… I wish we had KD back then. I also hope we re-sign Boone, I think he’s played well and he could be a nice 4th big on our roster next year.

As for Hassell, I’m for keeping him too. IMO, he’s an ideal 12th-13th man… great great pro, who will help the kids wont complain if he doesnt get much PT, but he’ll surely be ready if we need him…

As for potential deals… If we make any moves, I hope they target young players (not vets with high salaries or expiring contracts), even if it’s a fallen angel type of player… someone who could fit our young movement and have a future with this team without affecting too much our cap situation… would Milwaukee take Swat and our 2nd rounder for Joe Alexander? Would the Suns take Hayes and the Mavs pick for Earl Clark, who isn’t getting too much PT there? Just some ideas, that’s the kind of moves I’d look for…

by AndrĂ©s on Dec 27, 2009 6:05 PM EST reply actions

I hope they do keep Dooling. He is a real asset, a pro and a contributor. He and Boone could be the beginnings of a solid bench with all of the change that is expected.

by Peter on Dec 27, 2009 6:23 PM EST reply actions

keep Dooling!!!!!!!!!!!!! who is going to be better at the backup pg????

by johnfried on Dec 27, 2009 6:23 PM EST reply actions

Lets do something “out of the box”. Most deals proposed are the same old same old. Hopefully we have more assets, intelligence and imagination then most posters, including myself.

I was not trained and don’t get paid to be a G.M. in the NBA.

I play one, on the message board, but hey it’s risk free and fun..

Where are the pros?

Lets have our head in the clouds but are feet on the ground.

Lets go Nets…

by Mike on Dec 27, 2009 6:45 PM EST reply actions

What if Yi keeps this up?
What if in the next 25 games the averages look like this
BLO 18PTS 10REBS 4AST 2BLK
YI 15PTS 8 REBS
CDR 16PTS 5REBS 2AST 2STL
CLEE 12PTS 2AST 2STL
DH 18PTS 6AST 2STL
If Yi can stay aggressive and confident,we may be able to win 20 games.
Brook still has to be the focus.

So here’s your question:

Would you guys keep Dooling, pay him $3.82 million and shrink the cap space to $21 million or pay him $500,000 and keep the cap space at around $25 million?

I also suggest that those of you who think he would return to the Nets for less money are a bit naive. Dooling’s history has been to go with whoever pays him the most. Also, he is not crazy about New Jersey fans…and has said so. Why would he stay in New Jersey when his roots are in Florida, when he would be paid less money and when he thinks Nets fans are the worst he has ever played before. He said that last year as the team was booed.

Not to mention that Dooling said last week he doesn’t think he will be at full speed again until next season. Of course there is no guarantee of that.

Sorry.

@ NetIncome: Sensational Job on this article. When you break it down, you really break it down to the core base. I do admit I like Dooling. I think he is the perfect heady vet backup PG you need. I too would decline his option though. My only hope he would be availiable after the 90 day morantium to sign with us. It maybe for less but how many suitors are going invest big money down the line. He has future head coach in his career written all over him. This article need sto be saved and looked at constantly as we endure this season. Rod and Kiki deserve to be back look at the potential of our future.

Alston and Najera for a bag of chips.

If Dooling don’t want to be here, trade him or cut him now..

Rule # 1 in life:

Don’t ever be around people, who would rather be somewhere else.

If you follow that rule, everything else falls into place, good or bad…

by Mike on Dec 27, 2009 8:09 PM EST reply actions

Please do some trades to do this team, at least in better record shape to attract “free agents”.

Get rid of Alston, Simmons, Hassell, Battie, Najera.

The 5 biggest pests on the Nets.

by jarkid on Dec 27, 2009 8:25 PM EST reply actions

I PREDICT NAJERA BEING BOUGHT OUT AND KEYON GETS RESIGNED.

nice read NI!!!!

cant wait for proky to take over…im sure he wont disappoint.

by Andy on Dec 27, 2009 8:39 PM EST reply actions

as much as i love dooling and hassell, if we can trade em for picks im all for it, just dont add on to our salary. Maybe we can package all our expiring for Tmac :p he is a 22 mill expiring contract, plus it would be entertaining :D

by danxcr on Dec 27, 2009 9:56 PM EST reply actions

Dooling should be leader of the team, period!!!!!

by fplc on Dec 27, 2009 10:19 PM EST reply actions

Dooling will be unloaded, as will the rest of the vets, there is no reason the Nets will hang onto Battie, Simmons, Dooling, Najera, etc. In fact the only players they will keep are Yi, Lopez, CDR, DH, Twill, Hayes and Lee. As far as who the other 8 will be, let’s dream…anyone?

by johnny on Dec 27, 2009 10:58 PM EST reply actions

I’d like to keep dooling if possible. But if we have harris and wall on the roster, obviously we cant keep him.

by Kevin on Dec 27, 2009 11:30 PM EST reply actions

Lost in Kevin Martin’s shadow, is Francisco Garcia who is also out with an injury, but he has a 3 year history of being 37%-40% on threes. With Tyreke Evans, Kevin Martin, Beno Udrith, and a very deep core of forwards, I can’t see them keeping Garcia. He is supposedly due back before the deadline.

by kg on Dec 28, 2009 1:07 AM EST reply actions

I am a really big fan of dealing Swat plus a future second rounder to Milwaukee for Joe Alexander. I think Alexander is going to be a player in the future, and he is not in Milwaukee’s plans…….

I also really like Dooling, but would look to deal him for a young player (Anthony Randolph?) or a draft pick. THis is all about getting younger and starting to build a very young core. I would keep Hassell and Boone around for veteran leadership.

And I would not deal Yi. He looks great since coming back. It could be a giant hoodwink – but if its not..

by Ryan243 on Dec 28, 2009 10:54 AM EST reply actions

Yes it is time to deal. The team is so bad it will windup high in the lottery no matter what. Top tier FAs are not going to come here next year for less money than their own team can offer. So a trade of expirings now for talent is the best route to success next year.

Randolph is a cheap bet that is worth taking.

by mt57 on Dec 28, 2009 11:18 AM EST reply actions

What about giving T-Mac a “tryout” with this team? We could bail him out of his current situation, see what he has left in the tank (or knee), and then offer him a reasonable contract at the end of the season if his play warrants any sort of action.

Sure, he’s been through a lot of injuries, but he is only 30 years old. He could be a Michael Finley, Jerry Stackhouse type player in our “Rebuilding in the Mold of Dallas” plan of attack. Perhaps Joey Dorsey could come over with him and we’d toss a 2nd round pick at Houston with Battie, Hassell and Simmons.

by Brooklyn on Dec 28, 2009 1:36 PM EST reply actions

That was me. I used the name “Brooklyn” to make a joke last week and forgot to change my name back.

by Dirt on Dec 28, 2009 1:40 PM EST reply actions

I had assumed the 25 million figure included keeping Dooling.

Another vote to keep Dooling and trade Alston before the deadline if possible. Otherwise, unless they got Wall, Nets would be shopping free agency for a true backup point guard – just like Dooling. Dooling would be “grabbed up” quickly if Nets let him go. Nets would have to pay like 4 million to get someone who wasn’t better than Keyon.

I’ll bet Avery Johnson would want Nets to have Dooling when he becomes coach.

The fact that Dooling wouldn’t be 100% is more reason to keep him because he would be even BETTER than he is now.

Beside good FA’s wont’ come here anyway, except for overpaying for DLee or Boozer, which wouldn’t require the extra $

Dooling would come off the books in 2011, when they MAY look for a serious FA.
