Dave D: Thorn Made Three of the Decade's Most Lopsided Trades

In his best of the decade column, Dave D'Alessandro credits Rod Thorn with three of the decade's eight best trades: Jason Kidd for Stephon Marbury at #1; the Vince Carter for Alonzo Mourning, Eric and Aaron Williams plus picks at #3; and Richard Jefferson and Jason Collins for Eddie Griffin at #8. Dave D didn't list Thorn among the NBA's top five GM's of the decade. He calls Collins the decade's worst shooter.

RJ for simmons and Yi
VC battie, alston and Lee
Jkidd for harris, diop and hassell
none of the received players are averaging +20 pts this season, they all lack on D hard, and worst of all… we are going to win less than 10 games :D :D :D

Set Shot Willie at least had his set shot. There are players who have nothing.

How in the world does D’Alessandro give Nash the nod on the 1st team over Kidd? After watching Kidd every night? I’m sorry but I just think Nash is soo overrated. Not saying he’s not good, but c’mon. If you put Nash in his prime on the ’02 Nets, and Kidd in his prime on the ’06 Suns, could you honestly see the Nets making the Finals? The Suns not making it to at least the finals? The guy got two MVPs and for what? I will never jump on the Nash bandwagon.

There was one mistake I believe.
Tracy McGrady scored the 12 pts. in last 33.3 secs, not 333 seconds.

Thorn will have a chance to do something really special this off season, possibly his last. We will have cap space, an owner with money and some real free agent targets to go after. If the ping pong balls fall our way, we could draft John Wall too. I’d sure like to see Chris Bosh in a NET uniform, but know that this is a very very long shot. We need a talent upgrade, as we are still playing guys who are NBA talent 11th and 12th men and deserve to be watching only.

I now believe July 1 will be overrated.
I expect some sign and trades before the Feb 19 trade deadline (eg. Bosh to Miami) and some FAs staying for an extra year (LeBron) if not others signing long agreements to stay (Amare and DWade).
Since there won’t be much left, Thorn better do his most difficult decision making before Feb. 19, with Prokhorov as official owner.
Thorn has to be like a Chess Master – that is predict ahead what will happen and act accordingly.
The plan should include another attempt at a good FA in 2011.

There is no doubt in my mind that they are playing for 2011 as much as 2010. Thorn has said it publicly. So has Prokhorov.
I agree the deadline will be wild, and if Prokhorov isn’t the owner at that point, the Nets will be sitting on the sidelines, watching the world go by. I don’t have a clue as to what will happen if he is owner.

@ mr. omG
RJ trade was a good one. Yi is a legit prospect. He can ball. As much as we all have loved RJ, I think it’s time to stop evaluating that trade. Time has done that for us. Look at what the Bucks got for him.

As for Dave D’s list, I don’t think Pau Gasol’s was that lopsided. Grizz got his bro Marc who is a really solid young player.

I got Shaq over Garnett for my top 10 1st team.
Sloan has to be in the top 10 coaches
Garnett for lopsided trades
Swat for best flakes
Thorn for exec. (3 of top 8 trades, currently most cap space with broke owner)
Harris shot last year (there’s a difference between big and memorable)

An argument can be made that giving away VC for nothing and basically trading RA for CL was a pretty bad trade, perhaps worse than the Toronto trade that brought VC to the Nets. At best RA for CL is a wash. So the only thing that the Nets got from VC was extra cap flexibility and cost savings.
The extra cap flexibility was not worth the loss of a key player who helped the team 1) develop young talent, 2) reduce discord among the young talent, 3) keep the team’s record respectable enough to actually attract a first tier free agent with the remaining cap flexibility.

We won’t know the value of the cap flexibility until 2010.
Also, the significance of the VC trade, from the Orlando perspective, isn’t known yet either. The significance of the Kidd, Carter and Jefferson trades is well known.
I would also note that two of those deals were made the same day: Draft Day 2001. In the afternoon, Thorn and Colangelo agreed on the parameters of the Kidd-Marbury deal. Then at night, Thorn made the RJ/Collins/Armstrong-Griffin deal.

@Andres
Gasol gave the Lakers a championship. Marc Gasol, who was a throw in, is a nice player, period. The other pieces of that trade were Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittendon and a pick that’s yet to be exercised. They used the additional cap space on Zach Randolph. Makes no sense to dump Pau Gasol’s salary so you can add Zach Randolph.
As for RJ, at the end of his career with the Nets, he had lost a lot of good will with the front office who saw him as selfish. Besides, the Nets won 34 games with him his last season in NJ. Not only did the Bucks get nothing for him, he is currently averaging 13.3 ppg for the Spurs…and making $14 million. Yi is averaging 13.0 ppg and making $4 million. If the Nets can get ANYTHING for Simmons, it’s more than a wash.

I enjoyed Dave D’s column. I was privileged to be at what he called the best game of the decade, the 12/7/06 3 OT game between Phx and NJN.

@ Net Income – Regarding the Grizzlies, they are now 13-15, which is better than they’ve been at ANY point since the end of the 2005-2006 season, or before Pau Gasol got injured. So I’m not sure how giving him away in order to sign Zach Randolph looks that bad right now.

@ Net Income – Also regarding Jefferson’s reputation as being selfish, by the end of last season, there were many within the organization, not just Ratner, who felt that exact same way about Vince Carter because of how much he openly complained about Devin Harris having become the center of the offense in a series of interviews with reporters from newspapers across the country in late March and early April and wanted him gone for whatever they could get as well.
