Nets' Comeback Falls Short Against Rockets

The Nets came close to ending their eight-game losing streak, but couldn't make the plays in the final minute to get the job done Saturday night at the Izod Center. After giving up 57 points in the first half, the Nets held the Rockets to just 13 in the third quarter and were down just one heading into the fourth. They grabbed the lead early in the fourth, but needed a Keyon Dooling three to tie the game with 1:38 to go. On the next possession, Yi Jianlian missed a three to break the tie and after Aaron Brooks scored on a drive, Dooling missed another three to get the lead back with 29 seconds to go. The Nets were forced to foul after that and never got another chance to tie. They shot 47 percent from the field and held the Rockets to 42 percent, but were outrebounded 51-39. Devin Harris led five Nets in double-figures with 19 points, while Brook Lopez recorded another double-double with 17 points and 11 boards.

Harris is a scum. I was always one of his biggest supporters, but his body language is lethargic at best. He is the reason we lost this one tonight. Woowwww! What a leader! I have to give a lot of props to Lopez who filled up the stat sheet tonight with 17pts 11rebs 6asts 3stls and 3blks.

sigh… we could have won this game. Aaron Brooks made a crucial layup…to seal the game.

This game we SHOULD have won

Once Again the other team builds up a huge lead
Yi getting called on the T for hanging was pathetic
Keyon Dooling Making that 3 would of helped
That possesion that the Rockets got the ball back 3 times with offensive rebounds
Devin Harris is brining us down, Keyon Dooling is our best PG and Alston should back him up. We should just trade Harris now.

Yi was agressive which was nice
Twill what a turn around played with so much energy and confidence those dunks were insane

Harris lost the game with his lousy D and forced shots. Why does insist on chucking 3’s, gotta fill the stat line. He is no better than Rafer. Trade Harris while he still has value.

Yi or Dooling’s 3.
And I think Yi should get that And One over Anderson, but not a T later for just protecting himeself.

@ Shawn Carter

why have you been so talkative after Kiki takes over? LOL

by jarkid on Dec 26, 2009 10:26 PM EST reply actions

Devin makes annoying plays but he’s not as bad as some here would have you believe. If Dooling hits the 3 then Devin gets assist on a critical play. Devin forced Brooks to the baseline where Brooks goes up over Yi and makes a big shot. Devin took 22 shots though and that’s too many. Brook was 7-11 and should have gotten more shots in the post.

This team just doesn’t have that 1 player to get them over the top. They needed to make the VC trade but you can see how important he was to the team.

Yi is looking good though. I like his confidence..

by supreme on Dec 26, 2009 10:26 PM EST reply actions

So close again. A few positives: Josh Boone did a heck of a job off the bench, T-Will played much smarter – wasn’t just chucking up shots and actually benefited his team, Yi continued to play well.

Think we might snap the streak against the Thunder.

by Andrew on Dec 26, 2009 10:27 PM EST reply actions

There were a lot of positives tonight. I think Kiki is doing a good job with this team. Yi is continuing to show signs that he could develop into the hype. TWill is playing MUCH better since Kiki benched him. Brook continues to get better. Courtney looks better. And Devin is playing well. You can not blame Devin for this loss.

Give it time – this team is developing. Rebuilding is never fun. But at least there is a nice young core to build around, combined with a handful of draft picks, expiring contracts and salary cap space.

by mr. omG on Dec 26, 2009 10:30 PM EST reply actions

At least we were competitive. I thought we should have taken a quick 2 at the end, not the 3. Maybe a 2 and 1 would have done it. We lost the rebounding numbers and couldn’t stop Landry. That was the difference.

by Joanne on Dec 26, 2009 10:30 PM EST reply actions

And agree with Andrew. Josh Boone is continuing to play well in whatever role he has. His body language/confidence looks much better both on the court and on the bench. I really hope the Nets resign him as a backup big man this summer. Championship caliber teams need quality role players off the bench.

by Ryan243 on Dec 26, 2009 10:31 PM EST reply actions

Nice game again. Again Harris is the culprit, he seems to have no control, But I never thought he could be an all star, Carter was the all star. But let’s accept it e need an all star guy who can lead, but Devin maybe next year, but if we get Lebron or Wade or evne Johnson then Harris game will be more effective. NIce to see Yi work hard, but he has to take it easy, so he could avoid injury. He will be very important next season. I am beggining to think even with Bosh and Johnson we can be really good. We just need the right piece next draft. A good PG with better judgement will help. Most of Harris fault is poor judgement, but he is really quick and effective, but people knows his move quite already so they have better reaction, that’s what he needs to understand not like last year.

by JuliusIrving on Dec 26, 2009 10:32 PM EST reply actions

A heartbreaking loss, but it’s sure better than Frank’s small ball. The T on Yi is pathetic. A few calls are really questionable. We could have won but then losing so many off rebounds to the Rockets and every time when we drew clse or even up, Devin decided to do it himself. I guess we do deserve to lose this one. The Rockets is a prime example of team over individuals, and efforts over heights. That’s what the Nets should learn.

Rebound, is one key issue of this game. Harris is very good at speed, scoring and moving. He is more efficient as score PG. NETS may need another PG playing together with DH. It may be better to give the ball to Rafer or Dooling to control.

by Andy on Dec 26, 2009 10:43 PM EST reply actions

By Devin losing the game I meant taking 22 shots. Your pg should be looking to set up others rather than trying to lead a 2-28 team is scoring. Starting Yi is a mistake, with Devin chucking and Lopez and Lee needing their shots he was left to stand around in the 1st quarter. Better he comes off the bench and becomes a scoring option on the 2nd unit against a 2nd unit. He abused their backup Anderson. Use him like Landry who also comes off the bench.

by Tom F on Dec 26, 2009 10:47 PM EST reply actions

I have to agree what is the up with Harris. I thought the Nets play much better when harris on the bench.

Maybe is time to take a look at the market for Harris.

by Seeker on Dec 26, 2009 10:48 PM EST reply actions

@jarkid

People need to stop saying “we miss injured player” everytime we lose. It seems like at the beginning of the season, when Harris was out, he was the only reason we weren’t winning and CDR was a “ball-hog” and detrimental to the team. Then when Harris got back and things didn’t improve, it was Yi who we missed. Now CDR is out, it’s him and Harris sucks. Stop being so fickle and accept that our team just isn’t very good. It makees accepting the losses much easier – also note that Houston are a good team this year. This is a rebuilding year, just enjoy the positives from the games and move on.

Was at the game tonight, thought it could have been a win. T-Will electrified the crowd with a few dunks and even Yi drove to the basket. If you can take something good out of a loss, I guess it’d be the play of our big men and t-will. Notice, the people who would be guarding our big men and t-will (yao and t-mac) were out.

by jose_rizal on Dec 26, 2009 11:29 PM EST reply actions

If you haven’t heard, T-Mac appears to have “jumped ship” because he was told he wouldn’t be getting more PT (according to ESPN). Houston game him permission to go home.
I think we can take TMac off of the Nets trade list.

There are lots to blame for the loss. Lots of open Rockets early in the game (bad D). Hassell’s minutes should have gone to TWill (he won’t be getting much chance when CDR and Hayes return).

Yi made a dumb foul at the end and he DID get too excited by pulling himself up on the rim for a T (It wasn’t the “hanging on rim” but the “pulling up” that got the T).

Entertaining game
This team has to learn how to win
We have to take into considering that the starting 5 has not played 5 games together.
Twill should have started this game
This team has to commit to hi low post play with YI AND brook, both can hit 18 foot jumpers.
Yi looks good, driving the lane? WOW
CDR is missed.

by HEAVYDUTYDJ on Dec 26, 2009 11:37 PM EST reply actions

Devin Harris cost the Nets this game, aside from the fact that the Nets allowed way too many offensive boards.

In the clutch, Harris allowed Brooks a clean path to the basket for the lay up, I was absolutely disgusted. People want to make excuses for this guy’s defense but he doesn’t care to properly defend at any moment of the GO NETS!!! game. We need to get him out of here before his value dips into the toilet. He also cost us a possession in the last 3-4 minutes of the game by dribbling right into traffic because he was too selfish to pass the ball. He had tunnel vision for most of that 4th, aside from the alley oop to Lopez

Yi played a wonderful game. This kid is really starting to come on strong. the aggressive attacks to the rim, my god Yi. He gives the Nets another legit offensive option out there. Put the ball in this kid’s hands and let him go to work

T-Will played a solid game I thought as well. This was just a tough loss because the Nets played well enough to take it and then things just went to GO NETS!!! in the last 2 mins.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Dec 26, 2009 11:42 PM EST reply actions

There are lots of positives:
TWill is the same Stud he was earlier in the year, but now he is playing to his strengths. I wouldn’t consider trading TWill. His 2nd dunk was at Jordan’s level.

Yi is proving he is worthy of a NBA PF on the Offensive end.
I don’t expect that to change.

The additional loss now means that Nets would be more inclined to make a deal or two before the trade deadline and STILL have one of the bottom two records in NBA this season.

Had Nets won, so many of you would be saying – the team is fine, just wait until we get Wall and lots of FA’s.

How is it that Harris, who was an all-star last season with 13 games of more than 30 and three of more than 40, is “scum” this season? Hmmm?

HE IS STILL HURTING. There is a real lack of BBIQ in this thread.

What do people expect from this team, which STILL at game 30 hasn’t had more than 12 players active for ANY game and has had 12 exactly twice—tonight and opening night, which has had more starting lineups than players and which still has players recuperating from injuries? There is no stability to the lineups, to the roster.

TWill played well. Good. Yi played VERY well again. Good. Boone continues to play hard. Good. Lopez had his 17th double-double. Good.

What does Harris hurting have to do with his god awful shot selection, decision making, turnovers, and lack of defense that dates back to last season?

Stop making excuses for some of this garbage that we’re seeing out there man. And food for thought, you should be wary about trying to insult the bball IQ of posters on this website when not even two weeks ago you labeled T-Will a bust and the kid has had some decent showings as of late. Lump yourself in there with the same people you’re throwing stones at for calling it like is about Devin Harris.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Dec 26, 2009 11:57 PM EST reply actions

Our defense cannot be judge right now on just one individual. Right now we just have to fix our offense. The way I see it with Yi back it has improved. With CDR back then we will have better option. Defencse we have Dooling and Alston to replace Harris and CDR coz they too are weak on defense. Offense always dictates the flow of the game . Dfense helps only if you have an effective offense. On a good team maybe you can only defend 1 out of three set plays. It’s worse if your offense is poor because it creates more transition play for them. That’s how I understand how defense will play an important role. Think about Kobe and Jordan. If both were not that great would you say Phill will be successful on defense. I don’t think so.

by JuliusIrving on Dec 27, 2009 12:00 AM EST reply actions

I can’t stand all this losing. I don’t know what is worse: getting blown out, or losing a game like tonight, when we had victory almost in our hands. 2-28….could I have predicted this? Our offense missed CDR the last few games. When will all our key players be healthy at the same time? Will we win ten games this year? Doubt it! Please, oh God of basketball, send us John Wall and a couple of starting quality free agent forwards?

by Paul Erstein on Dec 27, 2009 12:25 AM EST reply actions

@ Net Income

I don’t agree with you very often, but folks who never pulled a groin muscle have no idea of the effect, or how long it lasts. Harris may or may not be a bum, but what we are seeing is only a fraction of what he can do. Actually, it would not surprise me if he does not fully heal all season, as he sets his healing back every game he plays.

by Robby on Dec 27, 2009 1:20 AM EST reply actions

I much prefer a game like this vs getting blown out, at least it is fun to be at the game. There was a decent, enthusiastic crowd tonight which was amazing for a 2 win team on a night when the weather was bad.

I am actually encouraged with the team. KikiDel has made some nice changes. Tonight we had a big man rotation of Lopez, Boone and Yi with a dose of Battie. No extended minutes of a small playing PF. Thumbs up. Also, I think we are seeing Yi being used more effectively, Lee and TWill as well. I think getting CDR and Hayes back is going to make a difference. The team has had the ability to win the last couple of games, but I think all the losses have effected the team mentally in a negative way. They need a couple of wins to get past that.

by Ispartan on Dec 27, 2009 1:24 AM EST reply actions

So you guys are finally giving Yi credit. Its about time.

His play is coming along because unlike the shrimp we had coaching b4, Kiki gives Yi the chance and notices the talent in this guy. Now Yi has the confidence because he has coaches that actually believe in him!

One attribute of JKidd is he knows he is not a good shooter and he uses his brain to make everyone around him better so the team wins. But this guys especially Harris, he knows he is not on and the refs don’t give the foul he wants when he tries to collide inside, keeps doing it resulting in run-ups that dooms the Nets. Harris should realize who he is and that’s why Dallas gave up on him. Every on this team keeps jacking up shots thinking they are Kobe or Pierce. Guys, you are not and therefore try other stuff to help the team like REBOUNDING (AWFUL).

by Edd on Dec 27, 2009 8:27 AM EST reply actions

With 2 7ft players there is no excuse to get outrebounded by a team who plays as small as Houston. It shows time and again how weak and non athletic we are. If we are developing players why isn’t Twill playing over Hassell? Although Harris is not as good as last year, either is the team which effects him and he might not be healthy. He’s still a keeper to me. Yi aggressiveness on offense imo is due to the height difference he had over Landry which is why he should play SF. It would stop a guy like Ariza from getting 11 boards and put 3 bigs on the court which would help with our D and rebounding.

@BigEd

by Mr. Big on Dec 27, 2009 8:28 AM EST reply actions

Why is anyone impressed with Kiki? These past two games were the most winnable games we have had but we failed in numerous ways. You have two 7 footers on the floor and you cannot rebound? Plus the defense has just gone backward. No one is putting pressure on players. Harris and Dooling are an effective pairing but Kiki has not figured out ways to get Harris space to operate. Also Kiki seems unsure what to do with Lopez. Are we an inside out team or is Kiki going to keep calling plays for the wings who cannot shoot??? Did anyone really, I mean really, think we could win? Unless Houston collapses, we will allow them to score at will in the last 3 minutes.

by Yao on Dec 27, 2009 9:37 AM EST reply actions

I remember why Kidd was a good rebounding guard. When he shoots the ball, he is the first guy to know that he missed it and knows where the ball is gonna be. So he is the first one on that spot. These guys should practice that. Know where their lands when they miss. Know where the ball lands when their teammates miss shot and you got the desire to take it.

Agreed. Despite the loss I think there were some positives. I really liked what I sa from TWill, he brings a lot of energy and passion. Same goes for KD. I like Boone’s hustle too, he does a good job, nice to see his confidence hasn’t gone down now he ain’t starting. He finished well around the rim and even made a nice hook shot. I loved a sequence where Josh had a great defensive play on Landry, and Yi finishes at the other with a slam off KD’s alley oop pass.

I loved Yi’s aggresive style on offense, he took it to the rim constantly and finished hard every time he could. This kid has made huge strides.

by Andrés on Dec 27, 2009 10:37 AM EST reply actions

As for comments on whether Harris is an all-star or a bum, I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle. I can see why, after 2 plus years of watching Devin, Avery Johnson wanted to kill him at times. Just take a look at how Devin works the pick and roll on Defense and then watch what Keyon Dooling does in the same scenario on D. DH takes about 3 steps BACKWARDS, then tries to meet his man. Watch Yi in that play. Yi actually runs up to Devins man and then is WAY out of position. Boone was good at rotating to Yi’s man but that left someone wide open EVERY TIME. Even worse, the man left wide open was on the ball side of the court so swining it to that person would have been a breeze. The Rockets didn’t take advantage of it last night. Many teams will. All this scrambling around, changing of assignments, shifting, etc, it all starts because Harris is giving a half hearted effort on pick and roll D.

I think Harris is a major talent but if I am starting a team from scratch, this is not the type of point guard I want. He is quick, he can make circus like shots in the paint. He will get to the line over the course of a season more than most.

He is not a well rounded player, he is not an intangibles guy, he does not make players around him better, and most of all, he is no leader.

Most recent case in point. If you DVR’d the Nets/Timberwolves game (and if you did, you are truly a die hard Nets fan, God Bless you!) take a look at when Yi hits that shot and then pounds his chest. You felt for Yi. You felt pumped up, excited, you felt like running up to him and doing a chest bump or a high five, encouraging more. Well, perhaps not, not if you are Devin Harris. He came back to the bench, mimicking hitting his chest and laughing with some of his teammates.

I ask you, is that what a Leader does?

(Just look it up on your DVR. You’ll see it)

I continue to lose some respect for Harris. I say Dooling starts at PG and Harris at SG. Dooling plays both sides of the court. Once thing he has over Harris is He IS A LEADER! When he is on the court this team plays better. If wall has these attributes of course with better skill sets then Dooling, I say trade Harris. This coaching staff, past and present, has really messed this guy up. This whole this is his team has really effected his game. He is a diva.

Another thing why is Hassel taking shots that are not from penetration? I understand that Kiki is trying pull the reigns on Twill but Hassel takes too many shots for a guy that is there to defend.

Yes, I saw that too, DH was hitting his chest and laughing, he was like “Guys !look at him, what is so excited?” to the bench. He has no heart for that moment, even you dont feel like encouraging your teammate who just recovered from 6 weeks injury, your teammate is struggling his ass off to bring this 2-29 team a victory.
