Morning After...Yi and Youth

Yi Jianlian surprised a lot of people Wednesday...22 points, 8 rebounds, four three pointers, after being out seven weeks. Yi, on good days, has to be seen as part of the Nets' "promising young core". But Al Iannazzone suggests other teams, including the Timberwolves, have "promising young cores" too...and better records. He compares the Nets' core trio to the Timberwolves' and finds the Nets' group wanting.

Harris is not part of ANY yopung core — he isnt even a young player anymore — people act like hes 20 or something…
Harris plays like a moronic, out of control deer

This article may be true, but I don’t think anyone can argue against the fact that the future of the Nets is brighter than that of the T-wolves.

Harris is not a leader, has poor shot selection, can’t defend anyone to save his life, makes god awful turn overs.
Flynn embarrassed Harris. Add that to the ever growing list of point guards that have taken this kid to the cleaners.
I consider our young core Lopez, CDR, Yi, Lee, and Williams. Harris is just a trading chip.
Pray that we get John Wall people, so we can get a legitimate stud in the backcourt, and not this overrated trash.

Harris is the Nets best player. He is 26. That’s young. If he had decent players around him, he would be better, like he was last year.
I tire of this silliness.
by Net Income on Dec 24, 2009 4:50 PM EST reply actions
Yes, but Net Income what would you do with Harris if we really get Wall? Would you try to play them together or trade Harris? I just don’t think we can trust Harris because he is injury prone.

The Wolves are going to lose a lot of games this year too. AND they are going to have ALMOST as many ping pong balls as us. So….they could land John Wall too. Flynn, Rubio & Wall, all under contract for the same team? Could Devin and Wall play in the same backcourt? Sure they could. But it doesn’t solve our forward problem. CDR is a two. TWILL is an——who knows what?
Is YI a starter on a winning team in this league? Is Boone better than an 11th man on the roster? Will I ever lose the 40 pounds I need to? Will my hair ever grow back? Will the NETS win a third game before the all star break? DO I ASK A LOT OF QUESTIONS?

I think if Harris weren’t such an egomaniac I would like him much better. He takes these three point shots he has no business taking – he has been an awful three point shooter his entire career, but it doesnt stop him from launching 3 or 4 a game. Plus, his defense is awful when he has proven in his Dallas days that he has the ability to be an excellent, near elite, defender. That just shows a lack of pride in your game and poor effort and leadership. When it comes down to it, if the guy were making less money and lost the ego trip, I would be all for him and defending him. As it is, I just don’t particularly like the guy and if we were able to get someone young and cheap, like a George Hill, a Steph Curry, I would wave him goodbye without a second thought.

just trade harris for the first pick if we dont get it. So we get two picks ftw!

I was impressed with Flynn’s game and his aggressiveness. I think the TWolves have a better core because two of them are inside players who demand doubles and Flynn is just awesome. Also, whenever your two or your three bigs are big, it is much better. I think Nets’ fans, we are finally seeing that our core is not that good. Harris is a fine player and Lopez will be, but not tough like Jefferson. Lee, Yi, Twill: who knows. I like CDR, but he is a 6th man.
by Yao on Dec 24, 2009 6:28 PM EST reply actions
The worst thing about Harris is he is always looking to shoot. He runs up court shoots even when we are on a fastbreak. If he can’t shoot he passes which causes turnovers.
I don’t know anything about John Wall but if he is a passer first. Then we should trade Harris away for a nice power forward. I think Yi can be a nice 6 man.
by Seeker on Dec 24, 2009 7:06 PM EST reply actions
Net Income, do you really believe Harris is better than Lopez?
by MNFL on Dec 24, 2009 7:17 PM EST reply actions
good point by chris2, Harris HAS NO RIGHT taking that many 3’s. He is an awful shooter from that range. He should be traded while he still has value. And they need to stop calling him the best player on this team. Its Lopez by far

Devin is a good player but he’s no leader or PG. Certainly not someone to build around on a championship team. But then, are our nets championship bound? B Lo is a good young player. The problem is some people have wrongly put him in the same class like Howard. Brook is young and he will have some real bad games like the one gainst the wolves. For Yi, Lee, T Will and CDR, a lot of coaching is needed but they can all develop into, maybe not championship caliber, decent solid players. To rebuild a team like this, we need a super star caliber player to set the tone. But who? That’s the question.
by bill on Dec 24, 2009 7:47 PM EST reply actions
Yi looked the best he’s ever been. The ceiling for him is Keith Van Horn. A nice role player. We need everything on this team except a center. CDR is great but not sure he is a starting two guard or 3. doesn’t really have the outside stroke for the two but hopefully he could acquire that. We need two great players from the draft and one stud free agent just to be competitive next year. 2011 we will be a playoff team, and 2012 contend for much more once in Brooklyn.
by supernetsfan on Dec 24, 2009 7:53 PM EST reply actions
Harris does not make this team better. If, and I mean IF, Harris can learn to play off the ball and shoot consistently, then he would be a valuable complementary player. But that is just wishful thinking.
by JohnY on Dec 24, 2009 8:06 PM EST reply actions
D. Harris got flat out embarrassed by Johnny Flynn. Before the game Harris said that he wouldn’t allow Flynn to embarrass him the way he did in the first game.
by Hex on Dec 24, 2009 8:11 PM EST reply actions
How soon you all forget that Harris was the point guard on a finals team. If he wasn’t torching the Spurs that series the Mavs never would have made it.. And he had more points and assists then Flynn last night. So everyone just chill!!
This season wasn’t about winning. I haven’t missed a game yet and although discouraged at every loss you can always find a positive for the future. Last night for example.. Yi,Lee and Harris all looked good.
Patience people, patience. Our timem will come. The Celtics and Magic sucked 5 years ago.. the tides will soon turn

To all the people who are crying to trade Devin, look at his salary. Are you expecting to get anywhere near equal value for that paltry amount of money? Do you want to trade Devin and an expiring contract (e.g. Simmons) at the trade deadline…for nothing? Do you want the Nets to be like Memphis giving away Gasol? You guys are delusional asking to trade Devin. You guys complained about not getting equal value for Carter. Well, that trade will look like a steal next to what trading Devin would bring back.
If we get Wall, then that is a GOOD dilemma to deal with (how to juggle Harris and Wall). This team needs as much talent as possible. And you just want to give away what little of it we have?!!?

That’s exactly what I said in my postgame comment. Exactly!
I should sue Al Iannazone for stealing my points.
by biggie on Dec 24, 2009 8:49 PM EST reply actions
@ supernetsfan
why would you say that Yi looked good last night and then give him a mediocre ceiling?
ALSO
What more do you want from the PG spot? The guy was an ALL STAR last year….let’s have somebody like Hinrich starting at the spot for the team and you would be begging for Devin.
also, i like lopez i think he’s a solid center…but a team with a dominant center would have more then just 2 wins after a third of the season.
His stats are ballooned right now because of so many injuries to the team…
If you guys didn’t notice yet, the nets don’t run the team through Brook…there’s a reason for that.
He isn’t great with the ball yet unless he has an open shot or he is going back to the basket in a one on one situation down low.
Tim Duncan, Shaq, Alonzo..all of the more recent dominant big men made their teams better over night.
Brook is a good center, but there are A LOT of intangibles that he is missing that all of the above had from the start.
What the Nets need is a superstar small forward and better backup center, PF..etc….this team has a load of quality PG’s in devin, Alston, and Dooling….
one point I do agree on is that CDR is a 6th man of the year in the making…he isn’t a starter…there is not much he does well after scoring and needs the ball in his hands to be effective…
what is also hurting the team right now is that there is ZERO chemistry between Devin and Courtney Lee… These 2 have the potential to be one of the best defensive duos in the league…and hopefully over time we see them communicate more.
The Nets are a team that look like they just got picked out of the blue to be on a team…almost like a pickup basketball team…it’s not that they don’t like each other, its the fact that they don’t know each other.
CDR is too dumb to realize it’s not that the team has an attitude issue or doesn’t get others back…they just don’t know each other yet and thus giving him a feeling that his teammates don’t care….
this is a year to learn things and what better way is there then to fail miserably??

lol @ comment posters
1- Kidd was the problem, e slowed us down and we got harris.
things didnt got any better but worse
2- Jefferson lacked D plus we wanted to dump salary.
we got 2 players with an unclear future
3- carter was too old and we needed to dump salary too!
we traded him for 1 relic, battie, 1 inconsistent & old PG, alston, and 1 sophomore with no burst in offense
4- Frank was the problem
we fired him, the problem persist!
if the players & coaches have always been renewed and changed……..
does that means the front office is the problem here right ?? :D :D :D

People really do need to calm down about Harris. He is an All-Star point guard and just 26 years old, he just needs more help around him. I was at last nights game and there were times when he seemed to just try and do everything as if he knew that passing the ball meant something bad would happen. He also didnt look bad defensively at all times. Yes Flynn beat him multiple times but a lot of it came on pick & rolls so its not entirely his fault and Flynn was making some absurd shots all night. Lopez is missing some intangibles and what not but that will come with experience. With those 2 you have the 2 most important positions covered for the future. Yi is probably going to be a borderline starter which means another PF wouldnt hurt and adding one more star-quality wing to join Lee, CDR, and T-Will would be nice also. After that all thats needed is a solid backup C since Dooling is pretty much as good as its gonna get for a backup PG. Considering our cap space and 2 1st rd picks (one of which will likely be top 3) we should be able to fill those 3 needs (PF, SF, C). More importantly however is that we get a good coach. Kiki is ok but he is making a lot of the same mistakes Frank did and even Frank got the team to defend better then they are under Kiki. A real good coach will be the difference.

No way Yi will be as good as Van Horn. Yi’s offense is limited to relatively uncontested jumpers. All other shots he takes are 10-15% chances of success. His defense does not exist and his rebounding is tall, but soft.
Come back Keith.

To be honest I knew something was wrong with Harris after that game with Atlanta last year where Carter hit that buzzer beater to win it. Rest of the team celebrated, then the camera pans to Harris’s reaction, who clearly looked unhappy because he himself wanted to take the game-winning shot.
I would not want that kind of selfish player to be part of the Nets’ future.
by Antoine on Dec 25, 2009 11:01 AM EST reply actions
I agree with those who say that people need to calm down about Devin and he’ll look much better again once he is better surrounded. He can’t lead nor carry a team, but that doesn’t mean he needs to go. It means we need a franchise players, hopefully we’ll get one in the draft. Last year Devin had VC who was critical for his development. With VC carrying the load, leading the team and taking pressure off of Devin, he could explode and reached an AS level. IMO, it’d be stupid to make premature assumptions like he can’t be part of a winning team. He was part of a very succesful Mavs team and he helped them. Sure, he can’t be THE man, but he’s talented and that’s something this team lacks badly.
