Nets Fall to Timberwolves Again

With the second worst team at the Meadowlands Wednesday night, this looked to be a pretty good opportunity for a win. And it was. But the Nets couldn't get enough stops and they dropped their eighth straight game. The Nets trailed most of the night and were down 11 early in the fourth quarter when they went on an 11-2 run to cut it to two. They had one chance to tie in the final minutes, but turned the ball over and Minnesota was able to seal the game at the foul line down the stretch. In his first game since Nov. 2, Yi Jianlian scored 22 points on 7-12 shooting, hitting four threes in six attempts and adding eight rebounds. Courtney Lee (20 points) and Devin Harris (23 points, eight assists) also had big games offensively, but the Nets allowed the Timberwolves to shoot 48 percent from the field and were outrebounded 46-37. Among those on hand was Guo Shiqiang, Yi's coach with Team China. Rafer Alston sat with a sore neck.

And so concludes the worst day in New Jersey Nets history.

Thank you Ratner for stealing our team and leaving us with the worst squad in the history of the league as a parting gift.

If Nets want to win they need to play inside out, not involving Brooke was stupid. He was out of rythm and had nothing going when we needed him

Why can we never take a lead?
Yi did well, except for that embrassing last shot

SMH, this team needs to do some soul searching, I’d rather see swat play than boone, he sucks…

Well at least Yi looked really good, hopefully he can remain consistent.. Lets see what all the haters will have to say after this performance, you guys will find a way to twist that into a negative

Looks like 2 wins will be it for this season. It’s pretty bad when you can’t beat the Wolves at home.

Brook looked bad. He had butter fingers and missed free throws like Josh Boone. This year is horrible i can’t believe we lost 2 times to this team

Lopez sucks. Really sucks. He cost us a possible win. The winless situation really hurts the future. FAs won’t go to a winless team.

For the record: MOST LOYAL FANS in the league reside in New Jersey. 10,000 come out to the Meadowlands a night before Christmas Eve to see this pathetic excuse for an NBA team take on a 5-win team on the day the owner announces the team is LEAVING FOR GOOD and that many people still showed up????

If this stunt was pulled in just about any other place in the country, about 1500 people would have been there tonight under these circumstances.

While I don’t agree with showing up at this point, bravo to those that did. MOST LOYAL FANS in the league.

this team might win 6 games this year. Al Jefferson is soooooo much better than Brook Lopez.

I can’t see how any free agent is coming here.

by mills on Dec 23, 2009 10:35 PM EST reply actions

I really hate Lopez now, can we trade him for Jason Collins and 2nd round pick? This guy plays like a girl against Howard and Jefferson.

by jarkid on Dec 23, 2009 10:35 PM EST reply actions

So brook had an offgame everyone who has ever played sports has had one those games. Yi had an excellent comeback game, it was good seeing him express some confidence.

by eh-dee on Dec 23, 2009 10:36 PM EST reply actions

@Jarkid So because Lopez choked at age 21 despite playing fantastic in many other games and averagin nearly 20 10, and being instrumental in our other two wins this season, Lopez sucks? I too am mad at Lopez for his missed free throws. But he was off today. Harris has been off in alot of games. Same as CDR. Same as Courtney Lee. Same as all our players. You know who else has choked? Derrick rose OJ mayo, the list goes on. Alot of rookies relied on heavily by their team choke because of lack of experience and youth. I can’t believe this one game blinded you from all the other games where Lopez has been great.

by Sparklespice on Dec 23, 2009 10:40 PM EST reply actions

The hate for Lopez is ridiculous. A message to all the people who are hating him: you are all morons. Sure, you can all have your opinions, but this is just plain stupid. Awful, just awful.

by Gerard Himself on Dec 23, 2009 10:40 PM EST reply actions

@ Sparklespice

I know how great Lopez was before this game, but you can not choke when this team needs you the most !

How could you choke the free throws consistently? And missed the layups like using a pair of butter fingers, why didn’t you dunk it? just like what Vince Carter told to him.

we could have 3 win tonight, but right now, we might only have 2 wins for the whole season.

by jarkid on Dec 23, 2009 10:43 PM EST reply actions

@ Gerard Himself, How bout me and you make a list of all the people who have turned on Lopez? that way we can laugh and point out their stupidity when Lopez rebounds from a off game

by Sparklespice on Dec 23, 2009 10:44 PM EST reply actions

Yea Lopez sucks! 9 points, 10 boards, 7 assists and a block! Every second year player should be able to take down a crap player like Al Jefferson… PLEASE look at what you people are saying, it’s ridiculous. He plays like a girl against Howard and Jefferson?? So do 27 other starting centers in the league, those 2 are All Stars. Brook’s 21 years old and just dished out 7 assists to one of the worst offensive (if not THE worst) teams in the league. While being doubled like always. Yes, his scoring was off, but he’s gonna have those nights being only 21 and in his second year. I’d be more concerned with our “captain”, and I use that title very loosely, getting absolutely lit up by a rookie. AND our “coach” blowing the last minute or so of the game (NO time out on that last play?). Yi made a great comeback, glad to see him with play with some confidence over a decent player like KLove.

@Jarkid You suggested we trade Lopez for Jason Collins. Do you believe that Derrick rose, OJ mayo, Russel Westbrook, Kevin Durant, Danny Granger, etc. havent choked? They are young players and young players are prone to choking. If you think Lopez was great before this game why are u turning on him for choking as most young players do sometime in their career? was he not instrumental in our two wins?

by Sparklespice on Dec 23, 2009 10:46 PM EST reply actions

Almost a triple double
this is a break through game for brook
The offense ran through Brook and it worked.

brook is getting better at passing

some lost their cool…
Yi was off the chain
Now KiKi has to play hi low with yi and Brook.

by jarkid on Dec 23, 2009 10:52 PM EST reply actions

@ Jarkid. Which one do you like? Lopez averaging almost 20-10 for the season with a couple of off games and choking a few times, or Lopez choking most of the time and playing off with a few good games? Cause you are making lopez out to be the latter option. You still haven’t answered me. Have Derrick rose, oj mayo, russel westbrook, danny granger, kevin durant, Dwanye wade when young, Lebron in his first 2 seasons, choked? The answer is yes. But since they choked when they were young they should have been traded for Jason Collins? Cause that’s what your suggesting.

by Sparklespice on Dec 23, 2009 10:53 PM EST reply actions

All those players have choked and a crucial game has been lost. You can’t control when they choke its just happens to young players. You need to realize this, it is not specific to Brook. It happens to a huge percentage of young players.

by Sparklespice on Dec 23, 2009 10:56 PM EST reply actions

@ Sparklespice

They didn’t choke when they played to the 2nd worst team in the league. He choked at his damn free throws, when you are a 82% ft shooter ! That’s unacceptable!

by 1milord on Dec 23, 2009 10:57 PM EST reply actions

Sparklespice: don’t make a list, it would take forever. This season is absolutely horrible, there have been so many losses, and it’s unfair to call out Brook Lopez when he has an off-game. I’m not gonna get into stats, but he had great numbers against great teams too. It’s safe to assume that he had more good games than bad games, so people here complaining here about Lopez are really not getting it. He’s still young, only a second year player, and it’s unfair to expect anymore from the guy that is basically the best player on an awful team. He’s been there every game, and he is not the reason the Nets lost. He missed a lay up or two? He missed a free throw? Could be, but he still isn’t the reason this team lost. Come on man, a team that loses twice to the Wolves, a team that has lost to the #$@!# Warriors, and you people are blaming Lopez? We’ve got one of the best centers in the East (again, in only his second year) and people want to get rid of him? Pathetic.

lopez, cdr and lee are trying to be leaders of this team but they are too young…dooling and alston trying to do the same thing but they don’t have the skillz…devin harris should be the leader…injuries hurt his game but he has mailed it in this season.

@Jarkid, Your statement is false. I will bet on my life that Oj mayo, Derrick Rose, Kevin Durant. russel westbrook or any young player has choked playing a bad team. How you could even make that claim. Do you think brook lopez choking is special?

why so serious? I am just mad at Lopez when we faced the 2nd worst team in the league, and we have the best possibility to win the 3rd season game, and he choked.

by jarkid on Dec 23, 2009 11:08 PM EST reply actions

Nice game. I blame this one on Harris errant pass to Yi during a break 5 on three. This is where we see Harris is really not a good PG, doesn’t know when to pass and take advantage of the situation. If that was converted we would have lead. Very costly error.

by JuliusIrving on Dec 23, 2009 11:13 PM EST reply actions

Annnnnnnndddddd that is why Brook is no All-Star! HORRIBLE.

He just looks terrible against good centers. He is slow, and nonathletic. He is going to have to be more aggressive to make up for his shortcomings. Maybe try going up strong and jamming it instead of cutting through 3 defenders and just chucking it up hoping to get a call!

Horrible.

by Tim on Dec 23, 2009 11:15 PM EST reply actions

Brook had an awful game, and Harris got his ankles snapped by Johnny Flynn.

On the bright side, Yi absolutely pwned tonight and Lee’s jumper came back. Maybe it will stick around this time, instead of disappearing for another 12 games.

Yi brings an extra dimension to the floor. I knew that would happen. I have liked what Yi has been doing since the summer, improving his game, and playing without fear. He will be an important part of this team for years to come off of the bench.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Dec 23, 2009 11:21 PM EST reply actions

correct me im wrong but didnt lopez go for 27 pts n 15 boards against al jefferson in the 1st meeting…at the end of the day we didnt get stops at the end of the game an that was a bigger problem than brooks performance (which wasnt far off a trible double!)

ps. where are all the Yi haters lol

by jackbauer on Dec 23, 2009 11:26 PM EST reply actions

Brook almost had a triple double, give me a break. Obviously, he was off offensively, and that happens to every great player occasionally. But he still did plenty to contribute regardless. I don’t know why nobody’s killing Devin, when they had a 5 on 3 fast break in the last minute or so and he passes it directly to Jonny Flynn. IMO that was what lost the game. That could have been the momentum change we needed at that point.

by t-bone on Dec 23, 2009 11:26 PM EST reply actions

Mr. Dollar Bills is assuming Yi will be a bench player on his hopes that Nets sign an all star PF in the future.
But coming back to reality, I think a player who just scored 22 points after missing almost 2 months should be a starter if not go to guy for a joke team right now.

At this point im just happy i got to watch a game where the Nets weren’t trailing by more than 15 the entire game. Most games this season have been unwatchable and this wasn’t one of them.

Brook was awful tonight and its disappointing he played that way in a winnable game.

by pawley on Dec 23, 2009 11:28 PM EST reply actions

Points: Boone and Hassell 50 minutes and 35 in +/

The defense and rebounding effort doesn’t justify them getting that much. Basically for all of the Boone fans, Ian made the point that we have been outrebounded in 16 consecutive games even with a role player devoted to rebounding on the floor with a 20-10 center. Jayson Williams averaged nearly 7 offensive rebounds a game on a better shooting team. Jamie Feick averaged better in rebounding than Boone even. Enough with the passes, this guy belongs in street clothes. Boone’s rebounding is average at best and team defense continues to get worse as his minutes go up.

Was it Don Casey appreciation night? It sure looked like his
end game management. Having 2 timeouts go to waste as guys let the clock run out.

Lopez makes his free throws like normal and this is a win. Too bad because his assist numbers were nice and no player is going to have a great night every night and the majority have been good.

Lopez

I liked the new wrinkles added to the offense, the give and go from Lopez to Lee and Harris led to some easy dunks. I have no problem with Lopez taking fewer shots, his efficiency was reduced due to trying to carry too much of the scoring load. The offense still went through him as evidenced by his 7 assists. His 5 missed free throws hurt the team though. There was some idiot Syracuse Flynn fan sitting in front of me heckling Lopez and it actually might have affected him.

Yi was great, easily the best Nets player in the game. He made a positive difference on both ends. When the aforementioned idiot heckled Yi, Yi shut him up, there was a fan below us who turned around and put his finger in front of his mouth as if to tell the heckler Yi was shutting his mouth.

TWill was a big zero and helped to lose the game. Harris made some nice shots but his many turnovers were killer. SportsCenter made fun of his errant alley oop passes tonight. Allstar? Not.

Tonight was special though, I had the honor of witnessing a made Boone free throw!

by Ispartan on Dec 24, 2009 12:39 AM EST reply actions

Some of the people really makes me laugh. Some days, when Yi didn’t play well, they became the strongest Yi-haters. Now that B Lo had an off game, they call him every name in the world and bleme him for the loss. Look, it’s a team sport and losing is always a (or lack of)team effort. We lost because we can’t get the necessary stops. Yi is not a very good defensive player (because he doesn’t know how due to poor early coaching) but at least he tries. Some of the other players simply didn’t try hard enough.

trade them 1st then play swat and dooling and build there value, we have 15 contracts to many and to many in the rotation, why they hell is twill not playing 35 mpg/.
please trade cdr no handle no d no passing no shot outside 15 ft, we have a log jam lee and twill have much more upside, they just dont have as big as a mouth as cdr, he plays like 40 minutes we get blown out and talks like he is the 3rd person, YOU ON THE COURT DO SOMETHING

Was at the game tonight, I really thought we could have won the game. But really, even a healthy 100 % Yi, CDR Lee, Harris and Lopez is not at all a contender, but a sure shot lottery bound team. I dont see Harris leading us to the play offs any time in the future. Our center had more assist today! The way he plays, doesnt get all the calls and never will and is injury prone. I guess do we still wonder why Avery had him on a leash? He was an allstar only because we had VC last year. Lopez and CDR are keepers. I would give Yi till the rest of the year.

by Kupalski on Dec 24, 2009 12:51 AM EST reply actions

A good chance for a win, but you can’t win in the NBA if you can’t make stops. Also, WE can’t win with Trenton Hassell playing 26 minutes at SF. A nice return for YI. A loss, but at least competitive. Teams are setting up for Brook these days, opening things up for our forwards, too bad we have no small forward. Sure could use Jarvis Hayes, but he won’t be “back” “back” till after the all star game, if at all this season.

B-Lo had a terrible game, but we all know what he could do so not a big deal. Yes i know we lost to the t-wolves, but i actually thought there were alot of good signs this game.

by VC3 on Dec 24, 2009 1:49 AM EST reply actions

@Paul Erstein

John Wall and Devin Harris wouldn’t work. Essentially the same skill set, and neither is a half court option at the pro level. VC camo-ed that last year about Harris. John Wall might have better potential as a franchise-leading and more durable point guard though at a cheaper rate. The team could gain even more financial flexibility if Harris is traded and address other areas if they don’t think they will attract FAs.

We ought to thank T-Wolves for waking up the people who’s been blaming injuries to everything.
The bottom line is that our young core is nothing special in comparison to other young core(s)for the bad teams in this league. We got beaten by Flynn, Brewer, Love and Jefferson. Right, Harris the all star, Lopez one of the best centers, Lee and Yi got beaten by that young core. And that young core has even done a thing in this league, unlike those in Memphis and OKC (teams that are somewhat competitive against good teams).
We are rebuilding and we are absolutely horrible, and our young core is young and talented. But, nothing really particularly special.

I want the Nets to sign a veteran PF that can rebound and defend. All star PF is not a requirement.

If Yi does what he did last night on a highly consistent basis, then sure, he’d be a legitimate starter. But that remains to be seen.

I do want to see him on the floor though, because will create much needed space for Lopez, CDR, and Harris.

And people are overreacting to Lopez’s bad game. The kid has been racking up double doubles at a solid pace, and one bad game against one of the best offensive bigs in the league and all of a sudden people start crying. Get a tissue and man up. Lopez is a stud

Your hatred towards Josh Boone is ridiculous. First off, Jayson Williams was an outstanding rebounder. Heck, he was even was an All Star. Jamie Feick was a great rebounder too. It’s not like if you are comparing Boone’s rebounding numbers to Collins’.

Josh Boone leads the Nets in rebs per 48 minutes. Please explain that to me if he ain’t a good rebounder. And please don’t tell that bull about “uncontested” rebounds, because if it was because of that anyone you would play there would have better rebounding numbers than Boone. But nobody on this team rebounds better than Boone. He’s a better rebounder than Lopez.

And he’s a solid big man defender too. His D on Jefferson was much better than Lopez’.

It’s laughable to say that he belongs in street clothes, esp on this team, where there are only 2 better bigs than him, sorry.

The guy didnt have a good game yesterday but he has done a solid job this season and deserves to be part of the rotation, check Dave D’s article, scout around the league have noticed it too, but yeah you the Josh Boone haters would keep hating on him as if he was a scrub. I wonder why you don’t have a job as a professional scout, sigh.

Mills you always make poor points as if you did not watch the game, Lopez did not have a poor game except for his free throw shooting, last time these teams played, Lopez dropped 20 on the great Jefferson in the first half, so the T-Wolf D loaded up on Lopez, what happened? Jefferson fouled out trying to stop Lopez and the Nets adjusted their offense nicely (something Frank never did btw) to get other guys involved, the result was a near triple double by Lopez, hardly something to denounce him for.

For all you defending Brook… this is exactly what a lot of us were talking about when we knock on Brook, even in his good games… The shots he misses, are not just missed shots, they are terrrrrrible shots. Every one of them forced, and out of double teams. The ones where he wasn’t doubled and Harris gave it to him point blank, he took sissy shots. We need a good big man coach!

WoW!! One bad game by Lopez and it is “Trade Him”. Some of you guys are so FUNNY.

Anyway, I say you give TWill more PT. Twill did what he was suppose to – attack the rim. He has to learn when the defense collapses what to do. He did it twice ala 2 assists. He just needs more PT.

My biggest concern is Harris. What happened to all that talk this summer about better Defense. He isnt trying hard enough. I think once Dooling is closer to 100%, a Harris benching is in order. Dooling plays Defense and seems to get it.

Yi showed a lot of confidence last night. I wonder why. Beating his chest and emotional. He didnt hesitate to take shots. I wonder why.

One last thing to Kiki – LET DEL HARRIS COACH!!! Sit your ass down.

Is it possible to start 19 games in to the season and still be named coach of the year?
I think Kiki should garner some consideration.
He’s like a cross between a prophet and a magician.

@Ispartan
If you remember, Jefferson was a game time decision on opening night when Brook dropped 20 on him in the first half. Jefferson was not healthy that night.

Lopez should not choke at this game, he can choke at other games, I don’t care. But come’on, why did you choke against Wolves?

We need A win badly.

in 2004, Jamaal Magloire made the All Star Team on strength of 13/10.

I think Brook deserves it… seeing as how no other centers in the East, besides Dwight, can touch him in the offensive statistic category.

I always give most of the credit when the Nets win to the bigs and most of the blame to the bigs when we lose. The reason is they provide most of the D. Usually when the D is good the smalls suffer the most but looking at the box score every guard who played on both teams had a good game. So to me our bigs did not play good D and that’s why we lost to the second worst team at home. For all you Yi lovers while he had a good game offensively when you see the highlight of Flynn’s reverse layup, look at the quality of the D Yi supplies. He stood there like a pole, watched Flynn go right around him and never contested the shot. D is not calculated in a box score and maybe that’s why posters do not hold him accountable along with the rest of the bigs to this ugly loss. Kiki in the post game interview talks about how “disappointed” everyone is in this lose. He looks like he’s ready to go to sleep. It’s like nobody really cares. For all you D’Antoni haters at least when he loses he looks like he punched out half his team in his interview and is always trying to fire them up. Also I noticed the guy has won 2 games by himself in a way we would never. Playing N.O. (Paul) and Chi. (Rose) with the game on the line he had Jeffries, a big, guard the opposing PG and forced them into bad plays for the win. Watch tomorrow to see if the game is on the line if they go with Jefferies on Wade and what happens. My guess is it will be a little better than Hassell, who didn’t even jump when we lost. Bigs provide D. If they can’t then you have no D. Think about that when you want John Wall next draft.

Fair is fair – Yi looked good. But they lost again.
They’ve played 29 games and won 2. If they continue at this rate for the remainder of their 82 games – it works out to 5.65 games won. That will be the worst team in NBA, ABA, and BAA history.

The worst team EVER.

This game proves you cannot build a team around Devin Harris. It is the second straight game he has been outdueled by Jonny Flynn. The Sports Guy said Pat Ewing was a second banana masquerading as a first banana and the same applies to DH. 6 turnovers! The one that led to him fouling Flynn on a breakaway was just an unprofessional pass. He threw a 10 foot pass cross court and had it stolen. Unprofessional.

I am not sure if Harris has a place on a championship caliber roster. He would have to change his style, increase his defensive intensity, pick his spots on offense, and stop taking low percentage three point shots. Basically do all the little things like he used to do for Dallas. Giving control of the offense to Harris last year has really gone to his head. He is a talented player but he thinks he is a proven star, and he is not.

Has Devin Harris even made a 3 pointer this season?

by t-bone on Dec 24, 2009 1:33 PM EST reply actions

@ Mr. Big

thanks for your conspiracy, do you have any stats to prove your point?
D all around the house is important, and D all over the roster is bad right now for the Nets.
You would’ve done much better if you just said the Nets D is terrible instead of pointing out 1 single player who just came back from 2 different in injuries.

@ Ispartan

Thank you, I appreciate your comment.

Plays like that are what I’m talking about. Early in the game Jefferson got rid of Brook’s D with a simple pump fake, but he couldn’t do the same in plays like that you mention when Boone was guarding him.

As for those who critizice Brook that much: let’s give the kid a break. He had an off night on O, but I like he fact that he’s improved his passing ability, esp in those give-and-go situations when he leaves the path clear so the guys who receives his pass can take it all the way to the basket. I think Brook needs to improve a lot on D tho.

“D is not calculated in a box score and maybe that’s why posters do not hold him accountable along with the rest of the bigs to this ugly loss.”

Does that statement refer to 1 single player? I just used Yi as an example cuz his offensive stats we’re misleading in the accountability for this loss. Don’t use injuries as an excuse for lack of talent.

by Mr. Big on Dec 24, 2009 3:58 PM EST reply actions

@Mr.Big
you should blame on the outside not the inside.
It is our guards open their ways to the opponents.Could you guard two or three players at the same time? No. Our Big guys are not KG or Tim Duncan, and do not expect for that. They wouldn’t be super all stars.
Maybe our big guys do not have great defense, but they are much much better than our outside players.
Do you really watch the game?
