The Most Interesting Man in the World?

Back in June, when word first surfaced that Mikhail Prokhorov was interested in the Nets, we put together a short Q. and A. on this then mysterious Russian. A lot's been written since. So, when he signed the papers to buy the team earlier this week, we thought we'd update things and try to give fans a sense of who he is...and what to expect once he takes over.

Is he now a player to buy the New York Islanders and move them to Brooklyn?? think of it , he would then be a major player and the NHL with the help of the NBA could get the deal done

Mikhal Prokhorov once had an awkward moment, just to see what it felt like.

Our Russian prince has arrived, well almost.
Russians through out history, have had their backs against the wall.
I’m betting he’s the real deal.
Tough, imaginative, and ready to take the NBA by storm.
And it sure helps that he is loaded.
Lets go Proky… Lets go Nets…

Is there anything that Prokohovic can offer besides money to prospective free agents? There was a rumor that Dolan could offer Lebron James his own television network. Is there anything Prokhovic owns or controls that could be a carrot to free agents? We can’t offer free agents anymore of a salary than other teams could. The player can still get the most money from his current team.

The Lebron Channel. I can imagine the programming. Hours of Lebron Jr. playing, Lebron in drag, Lebron as Bill Cosby, Bill Russell, Bill Clinton, Nike’s Foot Fetish Hour, Home movies of him as a kid, etc.

maybe Proky could offer Lebron Siberia, or at least Kamchatka
by oligarch on Dec 20, 2009 6:51 PM EST reply actions
I am sure some Russian women would do the trick. Lebron can be in charge of European scouting.

Maybe LeBron, Wade and Bosh, bore Proky.
Maybe Proky thinks out of the box.
LeBron, Wade and Bosh bore me.
I hope Proky can say, I did it my way…

FWIW, you can’t offer things like their own channel. That’s a clear violation of the cap. Now if Lebron wants to buy the station with the max money contract that he hypothetically would sign for, that’s one thing. But you can’t max someone out and then tack on something like their own station on top of that. That would give the big market an unfair advantage and would defeat the purpose of the cap in the first place.

excellent point, Trueblood.
I do think that the league is going to be quite strict on free agency issues because it’s going to be so competitive.
But remember Prokhorov controls the world’s sixth largest gold producer. Think BLING!
(I would ask for Sakhalin rather than Kamchatka)

JVG would be the perfect Brooklyn Nets coach. How many Knicks fans still pine over the JVG glory days. JVG can convert quite a few Knicks fans.

I think we should get some more international players. There are some relatively good unknowns – including Thiago Splitter.
Lineup:
Prigioni from Argentina
Try and get L. Barbosa from Phoenix
Trade for AK47
Keep Yi
Trade lopez for Kofus and Fesenko and Knicks draft Pick.
Lineup:
Prigioni/ Sun Yue / JJ Barea
Loul Deng/ Barbosa
AK47/Andres Nocini
Yi/Splitter/Luis Scola
Kofus/Fesenko/ Haddadi
+ Nets’ pick and Knicks’ pick…
Dynasty of international players and we’ll be a good team.
Plus think of all markets we will have!!

Carlos Boozer was rumored to be headed to the Nets via trade during the summer. Considering the fact that he’s a free agent and that Proky wants to limit the initial spending somewhat, I have to think Boozer will be on the radar assuming the Nets don’t get Favors in the draft.

That girl always pictured with Proky, has more passion then the entire Nets team. Make her coach…

I hate Prokhorov almost as much as I do Ratner. He basically saved what was a dead project and will make that pig Ratner a billionarire as a result. Maybe he is actually worse.

@NI
I’ve been thinking more about the possibilities of how trading for Kirilenko before the deadline could work – since Utah certainly would want to rid his $18 million salary for next year:
I would consider trading Simmons and Najera (11.2+3=14.2 million) for Kirilenko (16.4 million).
In return, Utah gives the Nets their NY Knicks first round pick for the Nets Dallas pick (probably around #24) Knicks are currently 6th worse team, but Nets could gamble that Knicks will be get worse in 2nd half of year.
Utah would be saving 2.2 million this year and free up (17.8-3=14.8 million in cap space for next year).
For those Nets fans who believe in getting better via the draft, Nets could have 2 chances for two top picks (if there are 5 sure stars in draft that would be a good way to go).
By including Najera, his 3 million for next year comes off.
By getting Kirilenko now (would make Proky popular in Russia), Nets could start winning some games again (no longer laughing stock) and increase chance to attract another FA for at least 10 million.
Kirilenko is probably worth 6 million/yr. anyway and is as good for the Nets as many of the FA’s available.
For 2010 Nets could be adding Kirilenko, say David Lee and 2 star level FAs. Along with significant development of TWill, that should be enough to make Nets close to being in the top 4 in East.
Plus, when Kirilenko is re-signed for about 5-6 million, then about $12 million in new cap space becomes available for 2011 free agency.
Also consider from what NI writes, Nets could always buy a higher 1st round pick to replace the loss of Dallas’ pick.
Now if Knicks went on a slide and became 3rd worst team by end of year, Nets would then have a very good chance of 2 of top 3 picks. So Nets would benefit by salvaging year, getting another top pick and increasing chance of signing a pretty good FA.

I wouldn’t consider trading for AK now, but in the offseason if like I think it’ll be the case our best options in the FA market are overpaying 2nd tier FAs like Rudy Gay or David Lee. There’s no way Utal will give up on the NY pick… NO WAY. In any trade scenario they should eat Najera’s contract though.
by Andrés on Dec 21, 2009 5:04 AM EST reply actions
Correction: For 2010, Nets could be adding Kirilenko, say David Lee and 2 star level Draft Picks (not FA).
What is so good about this proposal is that Nets are only franchise that would consider and could take Kirilenko due to combination of cap space, expiring contracts, and real need for the Russian SF/PF as well and having a boss (Proky) who would be able to re-sign AK for a reasonable salary in 2011-2012.
Utah really needs to clear his overpriced 2010-2011 salary so they would have NO OTHER OPTION but to be at mercy of Nets offer. Knicks are winning these days, so Utah could justify that they would only be swapping say a #11 for a #23 pick. We would know better around trade deadline and would depend on Utah’s chances to win the West.
So Andres, I guess you DO like my idea afterall, IF Utah would swap the Knicks (#11) with the Dallas (#23) draft picks – seeing how much you value securing high draft picks to make a team better – and you want someone else to eat Najera’s contract?
At present, doing NOTHING could result in Andres being one of the last remaining Nets fans, and also Nets still not being able to sign any good FA anyway and be forced to wait until 2011 free agency.
There could always be more variations, but no other clear trade is out there, unless there is a team in need for Alston (due to injuries), which could result in a 3 team trade.

Rudy Gay has been noted by scouts to be one of the leagues worst on the ball defenders. Do the Nets really need a guy like this. Oh wait, it is Kiki and his run and run no D philosophy. Rudy Gay will get a max offer.
by Tom F on Dec 21, 2009 7:05 AM EST reply actions
Another reason to want Kirilenko this year – straighten out defense. Of course it would be Proky making that decision and he might not do it for fear of looking too much like going after a home boy.
Hope something better comes along, but just don’t see it now.
Can’t always get what you want when you are the laughing stock of the NBA.
