Yi Return Slated for Wednesday

For the first time since Game 4, the Nets will have all five starters on the floor Wednesday...assuming Chris Douglas-Roberts recovers from his ankle sprain. Yi Jianlian, who went down vs. Charlotte on November 2, expects to return to action after a sprained knee and then a torn lip. Yi says while he's been running a lot, getting into game shape may take some time. CDR is hopeful, but day-to-day.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and predict a win against Minnesota and a win in at least 4 out of the next 6 games…

Don’t see 4 wins. OKlahoma is a good team. Loss. Houston plays at a high level. Loss. Cleveland. Loss. Knicks are better than us. Loss. Minnesota. If Jefferson goes off…. Win. I hope. Milwaukee is better than us, but it’s at home. I see 1 – 5 or 2 – 4. 4 wins is not possible. If Yi starts, I think we fire Kiki.

Put Yi with the second unit to build his confidence up.
Second Unit should be as follows:
Coach Kiki are you listening?
PG/K.Dooling SG/C.Lee PF/Yi.Jianlian SF/T.Williams C/By Committee whom we can put in.
R.Alton can fill in for K.Dooling until he is healthy.
B.Simmons can help at the thre efor scoring if needed or T.Hassell at the three for defense if needed.
First unit should be the following now:
PG/D.Harris SG/C.D.-Roberts PF/J.Boone SF/J.Hayes C/B.Lopez
J.Hayes when he is healthy starts at the three.
In the meantime us Simmons and hassell in his place until he comes back.
Continuity is what the team needs not players playing in wrong positions to fail.
GO BROOKLYN NETS! GO BROOKLYN NETS! GO BROOKLYN NETS!

It would be niiice if Yi comes back and Kiki moves him 2 the SF, CDR at his natural 2G, and bench C Lee! We can beat the Twolves. GO NETS

Yi is not a starter for most NBA teams anyway.
Why made a big deal out of having five starters playing?
Just saying. We are only adding another player who shoots at a low percentage. The only diff. is an extra body who can stretch the floor in comparison to Boone, but you give back the post defense, so……..not a big deal. Yi would be a big deal when your team has two three consistent star players, but not in this team.

Kiki will start Yi, not a doubt in my mind.
Still, I’m hopeful for a win. Based on the way Yi played in the beginning of the year, I think 15 points and about 8 or 9 rebounds isn’t out of the question for him to have. I think Yi can make a difference on the defensive end as well because Yi has length and you can’t teach that. Do you guys remember that game against Dallas last year? Yi did a pretty good job on Dirk with his length. Yi just needs to play solid on the offensive end and now, Boone doesn’t seem like such a liability anymore with the way he’s playing so we’d have a good backup big in him. We lacked outside shooting with Yi, Dooling, and Hayes out. With those guys back, the floor will be stretched more room for Brook and Harris to do their thing. I think it’s possible to get some wins in the next six games. Possibly four or five out of the six.

No excuse for outside shooting. First, two guys who have been on the floor, Simmons and Lee, were more efficient shooters last season than Yi, Dooling, and Hayes. If they couldn’t stretch the floor, don’t expect much difference from Yi who shoots at 30 something percent, and Dooling and Hayes who are really just ok shooters by NBA standard.
Yes, you can’t teach length re: Yi, but you also can’t get rid of softness. He’s a good weakside defender, but he can’t guard strong bigs at all. Give one and take one equals to zero gain.

Take a look at Yi’s game in the beginning of the year. He played much better defense and offense. He definitely is playing with more aggression. He was soft because of the style he was accustomed to in China. He is learning the culture of the NBA game now. Therefore, you can get rid of softness, all it takes is a different outlook and mentality towards the game. Also, take a look at Boone, his mentality has changed also. He used to be extremely weak on the interior until he had an opportunity to play. He crashes boards, gets tips, and dunks. Sure his shooting isn’t well, but he is not soft.

I am a Yi’s fan, but I think it would be better for him to start from the bench (second unit) until he gets in shape with his teammates and work hard to earn his starting line up!!!

I’m not saying you can’t get rid of softness. I’m saying you can’t get rid of Yi’s softeness. Still soft, no improvement. He got better blocking shots and rebounding from the weakside, but banging bodies with other bigs on the strongside is not his fortay. I watched Yi played before he got injured. He had a few good games, just like last year, but none of what he showed was consistent.
Boone is still soft, by the way, compared to most big men anyway.

Yi for his illustrious career is averaging 8 1/2 points and 5 rebounds. This year after all the muscle and confidence he added he is averaging 9 1/2 and 7 1/2. What makes anyone think he can go 15 and 10? He may play 15 minutes. He is not in game shape. He is a career 40 % shooter at 7 Feet! I think we are crazy to hype him. He is a bust, so far. He cannot defend. Boone deserves to start until Yi shows he can have an affect on a game.
by geo on Dec 20, 2009 3:41 PM EST reply actions
I still have to disagree though. I still think Yi has shown improvement and overall aggressiveness. If he keeps the same mentality then I seriously doubt that he will not improve. I think he needs more touches as well because in the beginning of the year there were often times where he would be wide open and his teammates would look the other way. However, as the season goes on and if he reverts to his “post-injury” form like he did last year, I will agree with you about him being a bust and soft, but until then, let’s just hope that he can live up to his hype, for the Nets’ sake.

Lay off Yi. He and Hayes are about the only characters in this
horrendous start, that can claim innocence.
Innocent until proven guilty.

I am glad Yi will be back. that will help our offense. With Boone in we have some defense but that doesn’t mean better. The problem is on the offense it makes the other team defense more effective giving more chance at the offense , and a lot of times led to easy transition fastbreak.
With Yi , he has more potential to be effective on offense and this can make us more competetive. The NETS needs to improve offense badly to be able to compete. If you cannot shoot then it’s hopeless. On defense CDR, Lee and Harris cannot defend well and create easy transition fastbreak so we are limited to set plays. Witout an offensive PF it just kill our offense. at least Yi will shoot the ball mot like boone when there are three seconds left he still look for someone to pass, which I sometimes make me wonder why boone is said to have some brains. Yes he know how to body people but that is nothing coz I don’t see him dominate on rebounds.

I agree with jj22.
Btw, I think Josh Boone’s job is underappreciated by many here. Lakers announcer praised him for how hard he works on the glasses despite being a limited player on O. His offensive limitations wouldn’t be a problem if any of our perimeter player could shoot. Devin and CDR are pretty solid scorer but they aint great shooter. Courtney Lee was supposed to be a great shooter but he couldn’t hit an open shot to save his life. That’s the main problem, not Boone’s limitations on O. The guy is bringing a much needed defensive effort on D and a very solid rebounding ability. I hope that Yi’s return (along with Hayes’) will heelp solve our shooting problems.
