Add Kidd To Those Blaming Ratner for Nets' Demise

Jason Kidd arrives in New Jersey Wednesday with a chance to put the Nets in the record book. Before that, he spoke with Ohm Youngmisuk about why that opportunity has arisen. He, like Kenyon Martin, blames Bruce Ratner for the team's demise, saying Ratner's more interested in the real estate play than the play on the court. As for the future, Kidd's not sure it can all work out the way the Nets would like.

I hate Bruce Ratner as much as anyone, but Jason Kidd is an unclassy prima donna I’m happy we got rid of. I could care less about what this jerk has to say.

Everygone blames ratner but kidd is to blame also.
It would be great for NJ 2 win 2nite!

I blame Ratner, but Kidd is on Dallas, he should just shut his mouth and be like not comment

Kidd just speaks the truth. It is no wonder why he wanted to jump ship. This owner was a death sentence to a championship caliber team. Kidd only saw things getting much worse. Guess what? They have.

by JustinNJ on Dec 2, 2009 8:18 AM EST reply actions

I agree that Kidd simply spoke his mind. He’s just highlighting what transpired under Ratner’s helm. Kidd was the reason this team was so successful, and if he left, it was because the situation became untenable. Ratner ruined this team, and no one on this site should defend him for what he’s done. All in the name of real estate!

by MrT on Dec 2, 2009 8:23 AM EST reply actions

Sigh, I cant wait to never have to hear Ratners name again. And i dont blame Kidd whatsoever. At that point in his career, aging and what not, then finding out you have an owner who isnt committed to winning. I would have forced a trade too.

by Boomdog on Dec 2, 2009 8:34 AM EST reply actions

Kidd’s try at GM for the Nets wasn’t very successful. When VC came aboard RJ should have been flipped for a PF. But RJ had a man crush on Kidd so he stayed. That, plus the love for Collins doomed the Nets.

by Tom F on Dec 2, 2009 8:37 AM EST reply actions

Some people can’t handle the truth. Kidd was one of the first to see where this team was heading and got out as fast as he could. What did you think he was going to do, wait for players like Yi to develop? Even Frank, who knows the game about as well as anyone, said Kidd’s “B-ball IQ was off the charts”. Between the Rat dumping K-Mart and Opie playing Boki at the 4 while Swat is on the bench, only people who know the game could see what was happening. We got posters on this board that couldn’t see the future if they got advanced notice. Every fan that spends a dime on this team while the Rat is at the helm is only supporting an owner who couldn’t care less about its fans from day one. Not just the NJ fans, all Net fans. I hope the Rat losses every cent he has for what he’s done to this team.

Kidd is the man.

Always has been.

Always will be.

We were lucky to have him as long as we did.

by Trenton on Dec 2, 2009 9:16 AM EST reply actions

He speaks the truth. Thats the bottom line. Anyone with basic common sense and understanding of the situation knows that he had to do what he did. He did the right thing by leaving. At some point, most people who want to do something worthwhile with their lives separate themself from a mediocre situation.

Kidd is coming off of a very good perfomance against the 76ers. I wonder if he regarded it as a tune up for tonight? Sorry, but I want Kidd to assure Ratner’s infamy as one of the worst sports franchise owners in history.

Hard to think that if we had waited one more year with JKidd and RJ, we could have had Brook Lopez and a seemingly good team. I like Devin Harris and all, but JKidd is still an amazing point guard for his age, and I think he’s somewhat worth the money Dallas threw at him this summer

I don’t think anybody really hated Frank, we just didn’t think he was the right coach for this team. As for Jason Kidd, how many rings does he have? Answer = 0.

by Mike on Dec 2, 2009 11:20 AM EST reply actions

Jason Kidd did more for this franchise then any other person.

by Randy Oreens on Dec 2, 2009 11:24 AM EST reply actions

I have to admit I didn’t think Kidd liked Frank’s coaching and would be suprised if Kidd goes out of his way to talk to him like he might with Thorn. It wasn’t a quote from Kidd that he “keeps in touch with Frank” just Ohm Youngmisuk (the writer) writing he does which he might imo.

by Mr. Big on Dec 2, 2009 11:25 AM EST reply actions

If only……

Kidd / Dooling
Carter / CDR
Jefferson / T.Williams
Krstic / S.Williams
Lopez / Boone

Adding Lopez and a recovered Krstic to our Big 3 would have kept us contenders IMO.

by Jack Handy on Dec 2, 2009 11:32 AM EST reply actions

@ Mike,

Kidd didn’t get any rings with the Nets because Ratner was unwilling to come out of his pocket. In retrospect, I don’t blame him for the K-Mart deal and the VC trade last year because those things ultimately needed to be done. But nothing was done to improve the team in the interim, and we reached the height of our success with Kidd at the point. I don’t blame him in the least for what went down, but Ratner is another story. He should be banned from the NBA for life!

by MrT on Dec 2, 2009 11:45 AM EST reply actions

They call that a “rip”? I call that a waste of space.

by gino on Dec 2, 2009 11:46 AM EST reply actions

I think the way Kidd left here was classless, but as time goes by, I can clearly see why he wanted out so bad. He KNEW this was bound to happen eventually, and why would he want to be around this garbage?? Seriously, VC is a class act but there is a reason why he screamed with joy when he got shipped out of here and onto an organization that has talent in place so he won’t have to kill himself to win games every night. Those of you who underestimate VC’s effort when playing here just need to look at the record of this team and swallow that bitter pill, because you were flat out wrong about Carter.

Kidd is going to play extra hard to put us under the floorboards. Muwu brings up a crazy point…had we waited one more year, the Nets would have had the big man they always needed to go in place with Kidd-Carter-Jefferson. Oh well, hindsight is 20-20

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Dec 2, 2009 11:48 AM EST reply actions

First off, Kidd (the player) is the greatest thign to ever happen to the Nets since joining the NBA – there isn’t even a close second.

Kidd (the GM) not so much – he ordered and got the likes of Mutombo, Mourning and worst of all Lawrence Frank but nonetheless his comments about Ratner are spot on and that’s why he didn’t finish his career as a Net like he most certainly should have.

Ratner has poisoned this organiazation with greed that goes even beyond imagination. It is about time Ratner really starts hearing it from the fans if even bothers to attend any more games – he has no business being there the way he has spit on New Jersey and its fans.

I hope the Nets end this hideous streak (despite our coach being too scared to try and help) but I also hope J-Kidd drops 20 assists on us tonight to remind everyone of his greatness.

by Isaac on Dec 2, 2009 12:40 PM EST reply actions

Kidd is a Nets Legend. Bt not a GM. KMart is NOT a MAX player. Ask Denver if they wouldn’t like to unload that contract for a half-decent player back.

By the way I love KMart

Kidd at shootaround this morning…yep, he gets it.

“The one thing that’s consistent is that we could never get anybody to come to the games.’’

He’s often wondered what it would have been like to have those Nets teams that played in two NBA Finals play home games at Madison Square Garden.

“Those little eight miles are huge,‘’ he said. "Being on this side of the river with the teams we had, that would have been a lot of fun.’’

I guess what he’s saying is real fans buy tickets.

“stale toast and moldy cheese” is what the SI guy compares our roster to. That plus the Van Gundy quote make up an amazing amount of disrepsect for the players. You can see disrespecting the owner like that, but the players?

It is also sad that Kidd needs to tarnish his reputation further after coming off as a savior until his headache episode and everything that followed.

Keep up the great work though Net Income.

What is especially sad is that when Kidd came to the Nets in 2001, he made it a point to say he was going to make it Nets country and take away much of the unexplainable love for the descpicable Knicks.

And then he delivered. On his back the team went to 2 NBA Finals – and believe it or not, those playoff games were packed or very close to it (Iwas there for most of them) and slowly but surely on the streets of Manahattan even around MSG you would see Kidd, Martin and RJ jerseys.

Kidd with his performance had begin to make the fans in the NYC area believers and then due to Ratner’s posionous influence and Kidd’s own erratic behavior all that good will that was built up was gone and we are back to square one and with an owner threatening to take the team from us.

Worst of all, Kidd himself now seems to re-write history and forget about all the love we, the Nets fans had for him and the rest of the team at the time. Truly sad- at least he didn’t give us the ultimate slap in the face by suiting up for the Knicks – after all the great victories he gave us against them and the pride he took in embarrassing them in the process.

by Isaac on Dec 2, 2009 3:38 PM EST reply actions

JKidd is right about what he says about Ratner. The Nets went from making back-to-back NBA Finals appereances to getting knocked out earlier every season. It’s unfortunate that he didn’t call out Ratner when he was still on the Nets. My guess is that he would have been waived if he ever did that. If he had said that then, there would have been huge opposition on the idea of moving to Brooklyn, and Ratner would have probably either stepped back from it or just sell the team after selling out on the loyal fans. Honestly, Ratner doesn’t give too much about the Nets, and I can confirm that I probably have attended more games than he does.

by Tal Barzilai on Dec 2, 2009 4:09 PM EST reply actions

uh Tal, is Kidd also right about how no one ever showed up for games even the Nets were one of the five best teams in the NBA over a three year period?

Your guess is that he would be waived? Do you have a clue as to what that would mean? Obviously no.

As for your claim that he has attended fewer games than you, that is dead wrong. He has been at most home games. As a season ticket holder, I’ve seen him at most games…because I look.

“My guess”…“probably”…etc. You have no information so you guess.

Forest City has lost hundreds of millions of dollars on the Nets. For years, they paid the freight while fans stayed away in droves. I am not excusing Ratner, but the fans bear at least as much blame as he does.

by Net Income on Dec 2, 2009 4:19 PM EST reply actions

Tal:

Kidd is right about Ratner and you are right, he should have called him out publicly when he was on the team. here is the problem with Kidd – he talks a big game AFTER the fact. I love Kidd but it is obvious he has gotten at least 3 coaches fired during his playing career and yet he always looks the other way as if he had nothing to do with it – the same for when he ran players out of town (like Keith Van Horn). So asking him to speak out against the man essentially signing his checks was never going to happen.

As for your assertion that had he spoken out, it would have helped our cause to get rid of Ratner – that is highly unlikely. had Kidd rocked the boat like that, the team may have been forced to trade him even earlier than they did and might have gotten back even less in return then they ended up getting.

Ok – once and for all, what don’t you understand??? The owner TOLD the fans he was abandoning them as soon as he possibly could. The marketing stooge took “New Jersey” off all the merchandise. Why do you still blame the fans? And why do you still say they should attend under these circumstances?

Please step back for just a minute and think about this.

by Jersey Pride on Dec 2, 2009 4:34 PM EST reply actions

yes he did Jersey Pride – no one before him had done so and no one since has come close to duplicating. Just a shame he has to taint this by lashing out at the entire franchise (instead of just Ratner) whenever he comes to town now (especially after the way he forced his way out and even got to play for one of his preferred teams).

Jersey Pride: B.S.

J.Kidd was a_s in Dallas as a young talent and also a a_s in his last years in New Jersey. What he says makes no sense because he lost in two championship finals and then it was over.
Kittles became injuried and that had a major effect on the team. The team was a burn out after two straight championship loses.
I didn’t see Ki8dd, Martin giving up any salary cap space to get a couple of solid players.
K.Martin is Denver. I ask, has he won a championship?
Plain and simple it was over after failing twice.
Just watch old J.Kidd play with his Dallas team and watch them faulter at the end. It happens always with old ego babys whom are just trying to get that ring. The Dallas team is not even as good as the Nets team that went to the finals. J.Kidd was a-s as a young player and is one even today. Sad but true. They even tried to get A.I. whom would not sign for one year at the min. A.I. is now going to go to Philly and play on a loosing team. See how important it is for that ring with these guys. Kidd/Maritn/A.I. are just what they are Hood Rats with talent that never saw the big picture but themselves. Team is a collection of people coming to the same goal. Nets are on the right track and will win championships soon in Brooklyn.

I am still not too happy that he waited until now to say this. I can still remember when I saw him outside the Klitgord Auditorium with both VC and Ratner walking down and not saying anything then. If he was really against Ratner’s idea of the moving the Nets to Brooklyn, then why didn’t he say anything against it when he was still there? He could have stopped the idea of moving the team to Brooklyn when he had the chance but reneged from it. If he went against that idea then, it would be very possible that the Nets would have been in Newark right after the Prudential Center opened with the Devils. Who am I kidding here? There were Hornets fans that boycotted games durring the playoffs in response to the idea of moving them to New Orleans, but that still happened. It is an irony that he talked so much about saying how much he was devoted to playing for the Nets, but then decided later on to be traded. It almost reminds me of when Marbury played for the Knicks and said the same thing, but then wound up on the Celtics after almost missing last season due to contract disputes that didn’t allow him to even wear a Knicks uniform that season.

I was at every playoff game from those Kidd championship runs and all the playoff games were packed and loud! The energy was GREAT with those championship runs. The Detroit series in the 2003-2004 season was probably the loudest sets of games I have ever attended. Don’t tell me that the fans did not start supporting this team! Finally we had a winner to support and there was a buzz around our team. We had not had that in our history. It was not until the Rat came swooping in that summer for his real estate agenda that fans would begin to see the demise of the franchise once again. Considering all this, the NEW JERSEY Nets fans stay loyal to the team even if they have decided not to contribute to the Rat’s pockets. Sell the team and move to Newark for good! I thank you in advance. Please rise for our NEW JERSEY NETS!
