Ford: Nets Like Wonder Wall

The NBA Draft is 204 days away but with the Nets winless, the team's draft prospects are getting attention. Kentucky's John Wall is the likely overall #1 pick. Quoting "a source in New Jersey", ESPN's Chad Ford reports, "Wall is the favorite right now". Would they trade Devin Harris? If they got "the right deal," Ford says they might. Even with the worst record, the Nets' chances of getting that #1 pick are only 1-in-4.

Lets not get are hopes too high for Wall. Any top five pick will do. We probably would be better off going for a “big” man anyway.

by Mike on Dec 1, 2009 10:06 AM EST reply actions

I think we can count on a top 5 pick, as I think we’ll end up with one of the bottom 2 records in the league.

Wall, Favors, Evans. Those are the three guys I think we should keep an eye on. Hopefully, we’l end up getting one of them.

by Andrés on Dec 1, 2009 10:11 AM EST reply actions

Everybody is assuming that we will end up with the worst record. I think we will have a better record then a couple of teams out there.

by Mike on Dec 1, 2009 10:11 AM EST reply actions

what makes you think that?

This team cannot even score over 90 points!

by rightclue on Dec 1, 2009 10:13 AM EST reply actions

I think best case scenario we could end up ahead of the TWolves… that’s it. And I doubt it.

by Andrés on Dec 1, 2009 10:15 AM EST reply actions

Our team got hit by a train when the season started. We will eventually get it together in a couple of weeks. I still think we will win 25-30 games.

by Mike on Dec 1, 2009 10:17 AM EST reply actions

First, we only have 25% to win the lottery, which is lower than boone’s ft percentage..LOL

Second, if we get Wall, I don’t think he could coexist with Devin.

Devin is not a true 2, and we have too many swing-men in Terrence, CDR, Lee.

And I don’t know if the team would still pick up Wall with the first one pick.

But if we get Wall, I think Devin would be traded for something. IDK.

by jarkid on Dec 1, 2009 10:22 AM EST reply actions

If we win the lottery and Wall is there, we’ll pick Wall and would trade DH. Count on it.

by Tony on Dec 1, 2009 10:29 AM EST reply actions

Mike….25-30 games???

Are you kidding me??!!? LMAO

If we land the 1st pick, we should draft Wall, and pawn Harris off for a PF.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Dec 1, 2009 10:39 AM EST reply actions

We can’t have the worst record in the NBA! The one with the worst record never ever wins the first pick! There’s mounds of history to prove that!

by muwu on Dec 1, 2009 10:44 AM EST reply actions

We shouldn’t really look at that 25% chance the way we do. Look at it in another way and there’s a 75% chance we don’t get the pick.

by muwu on Dec 1, 2009 10:46 AM EST reply actions

@ Mike,

You actually think we can win 25-30 games after this start? That was the projection BEFORE the season started. Face it dude, we don’t have the talent level and experience to bounce back from this start. I’ll concede your prediction ONLY IF a trade is made before the deadline for a big-time scorer. I just don’t see where that number of wins comes from at this point with the roster we have.

by MrT on Dec 1, 2009 10:51 AM EST reply actions

It would stink to loose out on Wall cause hes going to be a sure fire stud in my opinion. But if we get pick2 or 3 its not a complete loss…We’ll still be in position to draft a good power forward who will be an upgrade to who we have regardless of who it is.

by Boomdog on Dec 1, 2009 11:06 AM EST reply actions

By the end of the season we should have the 2nd or 3rd worst record. I hope that luck falls on our side and we get the number 1 pick. Of course Wall would be the obvious choice, can we then turn around and trade Devin Harris to say someone like Memphis who needs a point guard and take their pick. Then we could pick our power forward of the future. I understand that this team would be younger, but then signing some key vet free agents will stir the youth in the right direction.

by NJ savior on Dec 1, 2009 11:09 AM EST reply actions

Sign John Wall
Trade Devin Harris for a good PF
Sign 2 max free agents

We are set!

by Randy Oreens on Dec 1, 2009 11:22 AM EST reply actions

We need 3 point shooting. We have 0 players that kill it from beyond the arc.

by BWoosley on Dec 1, 2009 11:26 AM EST reply actions

It is way, way too early to be talking about this. Wait until after the All-Star Break, when we’ve got all of our parts back. This team is still capable of pulling off 25 wins, easily – perhaps even more if we can get some chemistry together.

On the topic of the draft, we are STILL trying to fill the gaps left by losing Bokie (3-point shooting) and Curly (power forward). My money is that Boss Thorn goes with Motiejunas out of the Euroleague. He fits with the team’s direction on the floor – young, high ceiling – as well as business-wise with his international background. Wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to package Lee as well as picks and parts in a play for Rubio, too. Lee hasn’t shown us anything.

by NJ savior on Dec 1, 2009 11:52 AM EST reply actions

Love Wall. Clearly he is the one guy who is NBA ready. If we miss out on him, keep Ed Davis at UNC on the list. He is a bona fide PF.

Do not rule out using the pick in a sign and trade to get Bosh or someone of that ilk.

by mt57 on Dec 1, 2009 11:59 AM EST reply actions

Well the draft this year for this team is about adding position of needs. Not just the best player even if we have no need for him now. Just ask yourself what does the team need by positon?
Good job thinking if you said a starting power forward, a true back up center and a rotation player in the first ten from the small forward position.
Here is the best draft scenario if these players come out this year along with our current players.
2010 First ten players:

PG/D.HARRIS & K.DOOLING
SG/C.D-ROBERTS & C.LEE
C/B.LOPEZ & C.ALDRICH
PF/G.MONROE & YI.JIANLIAN
SF/J.HAYES & W.JOHNSON
Other Key Bench Contributors:
PG/SG/SF/T.Williams
PF/J.BOONE
PF/S.WILLIAMS
Draft Prospects:
G.MONROE: 6/10-250LBS: Is a great passer and will run the floor with our running team along with being a smart player of the game. PF gets fouled a lot and he can hit free throws along with shooting going to the basket. Based on the Georgetown system he is controlled in college. Will be a better pro in the wide open running game.
C.ALDRICH: 6/10-250LBS: Great back up to B.LOPEZ whom also can run the floor, hit free throws and rebound without being soft.
W.JOHNSON: 6/7 210LBS: A perfect player to come off the bench with the second unit to handle the ball, outside shot, solid free throw shooter and pretty good lock down defender.
Important fact to know is that all three of these guys are of talent, need for our team and high character guys. What more can you ask for then this.
Imagine, YI.JIANLIAN/C.LEE/W.JOHNSON/K.DOOLING/C.ALDRICH as your second contributing unit with our first unit of D.HARRIS/C.D-ROBERTS/J.HAYES/B.LOPEZ/G.MONROE
With the three other guys helping out when needed based on fouls and injuries and players having bad nights.
T.WILLIAMS/J.BOONE/S.WILLIAMS
As far as J.WALL:
Well yes he is the stud along with being a high character guy. Maybe the answer will be hiring me as GM so I can create a way to buy along with trade for some more draft picks this year to get him to into the mix. The key is to get help for B.LOPEZ so he can dominate in the middle. By having a talented starting PF like Monroe next to him and a solid back up behind him. It will enable B.Lopez to be more aggressive along with allowing him to take a breather to close out games at the end while there is not a drop in play by having Aldrich in there. Aldrich could even play PF next to him when needed. Aldrich PF is for another day conversation. Watch Georgetown/Kansas/Syracuse and you will see how these three talents fit with our needs on the BROOKLYN NETS.
GO BROOKLYN NETS! GO BROOKLYN NETS! GO BROOKLYN NETS!

I don’t believe in good luck with my teams (maybe its because i’m a nets, mets and jets fan) Getting John Wall would just be too good. If most of the stars come out, it should a very deep draft. The complete opposite of last year.

My top five:
1) Wall- not a need but a team this bad needs to the best player available. Looks like a bonafide star, freakish athletic ability.
2) Favors- a need. very young. A little undersized though. This is one of the players i can see staying in school for sophomore year to be the #1 next year.
3) Davis- a need, sophomore who is very efficient. Is it because of the talent around him? Every game’s field goals is 5-8, 6-8, 7-9, etc. Can he be a true playmaker that we need? Needs to beef up a little.
4)Aminu- 6’ 9" small forward, needs to improve his shot but is very athletic and fills up the box scores. He has a 7 foot wingspan that could possibly terrorize small forwards in the nba. He is very young, even for a sophomore. He only turned nineteen a few months ago, and he’ll be 19 at the time of the draft with two years of experience in college, a major bonus.
5) Evan Turner- not a huge fan of his. I understand his stats are very good. Early in the season the first four are the “big four”.

by MoMo on Dec 1, 2009 1:46 PM EST reply actions

john wall hit a game winner in his 1st college game…a couple games later hit teammates for dunks on 5 straight plays on his way to 14 assists and a 37-pt drubbing of nc-asheville…john wall is BPA in the whole draft.

by jirohkanzaki on Dec 1, 2009 1:49 PM EST reply actions

Don’t get so Kong Ho over college ball players. Pro game is a big jump. Just becuase somebody looks great in college. Doesn’t mean they will be that terrific in the pros. Yes Wall is special talent, however it takes a adjustment to get to the same level in the pros.

by Dziedzic on Dec 1, 2009 1:55 PM EST reply actions

Here is what I wrote two weeks ago, after Wall’s first game:

“I think Net Income ought to start a John Wall watch. 19 points (including the game-winner), 5 assists, 3 steals. It’s the Nets 2010 starting PG, after they trade the always-injured Devin Harris.”

http://www.netsdaily.com/?p=9201#comment-77447

It’s good to see that, two weeks later, Net Income has, as I requested, started the “John Wall Watch”! Advantage: A.S.!

BTW, two weeks ago, Net Income replied to me:

“I expect John Wall to have very similar injury issues in the NBA…like Harris, like DWade, and others of small stature and big hearts. Like those two, he is relatively small, quick and loves tearing into the lane. It’s a fact of NBA life, as we noted last week: if you’re on the slight side and are among the league leaders in free throw attempts, you’re not going 82 games a year. Ultimately, it catches up to you. It caught up to Iverson and it caught up recently to Tony Parker.”

Have you changed your mind, Net Income?

Do yourself a Favors and just punch the Wall. It will just be another Thorn in your side if we don’t get those guys.

I’m also very excited for John Wall, but the chances of getting Wall is still relatively low. If we don’t get Wall, than the Knicks BETTER not get Wall. I usually focus on my team rather than the enemy (I really don’t hate the Knicks that much), but if Wall goes to the Knicks that will really shape the off-season. The same applies if the Nets get Wall. Wall, a superstar prospect, would attract big-time free agents.

by Jason on Dec 1, 2009 7:26 PM EST reply actions

Knicks can’t get Wall…Utah would get him.

by JustinNJ on Dec 1, 2009 11:20 PM EST reply actions

1. Wall
2. Favors
3. Davis

Davis played well tonight…

by Andy on Dec 1, 2009 11:48 PM EST reply actions

4. Patrick Patterson

by Andy on Dec 1, 2009 11:53 PM EST reply actions

Why are you guys so quick to get rid of Harris? The guy was an all-star last year, has finals experience, and is an overall great guy. Is he A LITTLE injury prone…yeah…but what incentive does he have to play? And what incentive does the team have to force him back? In my opinion, the Nets are doing the best thing they can right now…losing every game to try to sure up the most pong balls and a pick no lower than 4th. In my opinion, Harris is a great leader and will be a great pg on a great team. The problem is, on a team like this one, Harris is the main go-to scorer…and that is not something he can do effectively..so he forces shots and tries to do too much. But, when we have actual scorers on the team and Harris can go back to being a pass-first pg who can score and isn’t constantly getting double-teamed…you’ll remember just how good this guy is.

Oh, and why trade Harris for a pf? There’s 5 spots in the starting lineup right? Lopez and Harris have 2 of them. The top 5 pick has the 3rd. And we sign 2 free agents. That’s the starting 5. Then u have C Lee, CDR, Yi, TWill, etc off the bench. What’s wrong with that?

by netsfan1 on Dec 2, 2009 12:06 AM EST reply actions

And Jason cheer up…the Knicks can’t get Wall…they don’t have a first round pick. Isiah traded it to Utah yrs ago (I believe it was the Tom Gugliotta trade—-go Long Island)

by netsfan1 on Dec 2, 2009 12:08 AM EST reply actions

@MoMo

So it may be a turn for the worst team to win the lottery, if we talk about the probability and statistic.

It’s been 5 years that the worst team didn’t win, what’s the probability that it will go for 6 consecutive year…(0.75)^6 = 17.7%, Quite low, so i think it’s time for the worst team to win it.

by jarkid on Dec 2, 2009 4:07 AM EST reply actions

I think Patrick Patterson is going to be a good NBA player as well…I’m not sure i’d take him with our top 4 pick, but if we could trade up for him depending on who we take first id be all about it.

by Boomdog on Dec 2, 2009 7:13 AM EST reply actions

so what? 25% is still better than the next best which is 18% and who will pat you on the back for finishing 29th instead of last?

You got to remember that the real Lottery takes place behind close doors. Maybe Stern will do Proky and Thorn a huge favor (not Favors) and go to the Wall for them.

by Mike on Dec 2, 2009 3:45 PM EST reply actions

I love all these pundits and posters, who keep reminding us, that we will have “only” a 25% chance of winning the draft Lotto. I heard about kicking someone while they are down, this is bordering on sadism. You can all take a flying leap.

by Mike on Dec 2, 2009 4:17 PM EST reply actions

I guess I have to be the person to point out the obvious.
IF the Nets are going to sign any of the big name free agents it will likely cost them Devin Harris in a sign and trade deal this way the “new guy” gets his Supermax deal from his old team adding the precious extra year to the deal the same way the Nets “traded” kmart to Denver.
At least it seems obvious to me!

by 4K on Dec 2, 2009 4:49 PM EST reply actions

Regardless of what happens we are going to get a good player even if we have the number 4 pick…..obviously id love to have Wall, but im not going to cry if we select one of the nice power forwards coming out this year.
