It's ALL About Player Development Now

Supposedly, it's been about player development for nearly two years. Now, with Kiki Vandeweghe as head coach and Del Harris as his (teaching) assistant, it's really about player development. Players say it's what they need. Problem is that after training camp, there's not that much time for individual improvement, with practices, game prep and tape review.

CDR will be a 20-point scorer next season.

Man, why isn’t he out there tonight? Wants to start with Charlotte so he can look good? Bad sign. Coward or all about image?

I am also nervous about the “build from within.” Within is a D league. Okay you are getting back all the pieces in the next couple of days, but you still lack shooters, scorers, defenders, and inside tougness. Cheapness continues. Forget Lebron, etc. Yi is the answer.

by geo on Dec 2, 2009 7:22 AM EST reply actions

@geo

Shooter: Lee

Scorer: Lopez, Harris, CDR

Defenders: T-Will, Hassell.

And next month it will really, really, really be about player development!

Netsdaily – I CONTINUE to get security warnings like crazy when I open this site. My work computer just gave me a warning as well and that has never happened before. What’s up?

by Tom on Dec 2, 2009 8:41 AM EST reply actions

If this means Bobby Simmons won’t be in uniform anymore, I’m all for it.

by Yayy nets on Dec 2, 2009 8:44 AM EST reply actions

I can’t wait to see whats gonna be different. Hopefully this whole jason kidd thing is going to prompt harris to have a forty point game lol.

by The Black Prince on Dec 2, 2009 9:33 AM EST reply actions

This is why I give a ton of credit to CDR and Brook. They know there’s not a lot of time to develop their games during the season so they improved during the off season. Yi is even working on his game. Now with some coaches to help the development they’ll keep getting better. Kiki needs to start working with Twill on his shooting.

by supreme on Dec 2, 2009 10:03 AM EST reply actions

@ Supreme, i dont think Twill’s shooting is horrible to be honest….I think his shot selection is horrible and thats why his % is low. He’s being asked to shoot alot, or at least he was before Harris came back.

by Boomdog on Dec 2, 2009 10:16 AM EST reply actions

Harris; Dooling
CDR; Lee
TWill; Hayes
Yi; Swat
Lopez; Boone

Those are the only guys who should get PT. Forget Battie, Najera, Skip, Simmons…

by AndrĂ©s on Dec 2, 2009 10:18 AM EST reply actions

@Boomdog,

His shot doesn’t look bad but his shot needs some tweaking. He tries a lot of running shots, either across the lane or going to the basket. He seems like he has the ability to finish around the rim but right now he doesn’t. If he gets those shots to start falling he’ll be tough to cover.

by supreme on Dec 2, 2009 10:22 AM EST reply actions

It kind of looks like T-Will winds up when he shoots, especially 3’s. I’m surprised his shot doesn’t get blocked.

by canofan42 on Dec 2, 2009 10:59 AM EST reply actions

Andres, your lineup is exactly what I want to see.

by Tim on Dec 2, 2009 10:59 AM EST reply actions

I like that line up too, Andres.

I think TWill’s shot will start falling once everyone’s back healthy and we can see some legit plays being run. Lately, it’s been, “give the ball to skip and let him run the clock down then force a shot, turn it over, or pass to a guy with no opportunity”, more formally known to Nets fans as “giving the PG the keys”. Just absurd. I hope the first thing Kiki does is put a leash on our PGs.

by Yayy nets on Dec 2, 2009 11:08 AM EST reply actions

Everyone here has said player development was the only thing that mattered this season. Now we will officially see that being the only focus of this team.

Already Brook and CDR have continued to improve from last season. And I think TWill is having a solid rookie season – particularly considering he has played everything but center. With Yi and Lee back healthy – hopefully we see these guys grow and develop as well.

And I agree with Jarkid – CDR should be a 20 point scorer next season; along with Brook and Devin.

by Ryan243 on Dec 2, 2009 11:11 AM EST reply actions

Once Dooling is back healthy – I hope we start looking to deal Alston. Even if we could get a 2nd round pick for him. He should not be on the floor with this team.

by Ryan243 on Dec 2, 2009 11:14 AM EST reply actions

Thorn’s “I never thought this would happen” is telling. He clearly didn’t anticipate how difficult it would be for the team offensively when it lacks a player that needs to double-teamed, a player that can close out games, a player that can effectively distribute and at the same time be a threat to score— basically a player like VC. Without such a player, development of young players is stunted, because the level of difficulty of performing offensively is raised too high, and the prospect of getting top tier free agents dims.

by NetsSince76 on Dec 2, 2009 11:43 AM EST reply actions

I think the Nets are on their way to becoming America’s underdog team, the team everybody will be cheering for. The more we lose the better. Reminds me of Mel Brooks movie “The Producers”. Maybe we can have a T.V. “reality” show built around this team.

by Mike on Dec 2, 2009 11:49 AM EST reply actions

Lopez is already commanding the double team in the post. What the Nets need is a simplification of the offense, and as someone said, SOME DISCIPLINED play from the point guards. Harris and Alston’s main priorities should be setting up the offense and making plays for others. That is where Frank went wrong, but his blind supporters could not see that. You do not give your PG the keys to do whatever he wants. You establish the fact that the PG is the leader of the offense and must make sure things run smoothly.

Lopez should be the number one option, period, either via post ups or pick and rolls/pops with him and Harris. Harris’ should focus on getting into the paint not so that he can get knocked on his tail and injured trying to score over three people, but drawing in the defense so that he can make the proper pass to an open teammate. This is simple basketball that the Nets did not play under a coach that liked to micromanage and overcomplicate things. Encouraging a style of play that resulted in little ball movement and the starting PG on the bench due to injury was absolutely foolish. CDR is a legit scorer. Let him attack from the wings.

the Nets have players that need to be put into positions to succeed. I look forward to seeing Frank’s garbage playbook thrown out and a hopeful return to simple, common sense basketball.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Dec 2, 2009 12:03 PM EST reply actions

@Mr. Dollar Bills

I agree with your concept. But who are the wing players that are going to knock down those open jumpers? Especially through these first few weeks. I saw players take plenty of open shots. But they can’t shoot. At least if Hayes and dooling were on the floor that concept would work. But to this point the guys like CLee, Hassell and Simmons aren’t getting it done. So now the point guards feel like they have to sciore because no one else can.

by supreme on Dec 2, 2009 12:16 PM EST reply actions

Much of that concept will succeed or fail based on the shooting of Courtney Lee. The reason for the trade was to get a young shooter from the perimeter who could also play defense. His shooting has been horrible all season – but if he gets his shot to fall – then Mr. Dollar Bills is spot on.

by Ryan243 on Dec 2, 2009 1:12 PM EST reply actions

after an 0-20 start the nets will win 50% of their next 40 games or so then string together 2 winning streaks at the end then win the lottery and draft john wall… :)

by jirohkanzaki on Dec 2, 2009 1:47 PM EST reply actions

The Nets are going to go 0-60, then win their last 22 games in spectacular fashsion. They will still get Wall, but Lebron, Wade and Bosh will all be fighting to join the Nets, for far less money. Wait a minute… Sorry Angelina Jolie… I’m busy tonight… Yeah, maybe tomorrow… sure..

by Mike on Dec 2, 2009 4:29 PM EST reply actions

@ Andres – Agree 100 percent, but could you switch Chris Douglas-Roberts and Courtney Lee.
