Nets Beat Lakers ... in First Half, Get Crushed in Second

The Nets at least gave the Lakers something to talk about at halftime at the Izod Center Saturday night. The start wasn't as disastrous as it was Friday in Toronto, but the Lakers did lead by 12 points early in the second quarter. L.A. was up 11 a few minutes later when Devin Harris and the Nets came to life, closing the half on a 22-7 run that put them up two at the break. The Nets' lead reached six early in the third quarter before Kobe Bryant led the Lakers back. A 14-2 L.A. run gave them control of the game for good and they won the second half 57-36. The Nets cut down on their turnovers, but shot just 38 percent from the field. Harris (21 points), Chris Douglas-Roberts (20 points before injuring his ankle in the fourth) and Brook Lopez (18 points, 11 boards) were about all the offense they had. Bryant led all scorers with 29 points.

i knew we would lose. we did good in first half, but kobe is kobe and nets just suck. kiki is blind because boone sucks he missed layups and FT’S. swat is better. same thing hassel sucks, i though he sad this is bout player development. guess not twill

what’s wrong with courtney lee?

by al on Dec 19, 2009 10:31 PM EST reply actions

@ matt – fire Kiki and hire Mike Brown so that Sean Williams will finally see some playing time!!!!!

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Dec 19, 2009 10:32 PM EST reply actions

This is about player development matt, and that is why T-Will didn’t play. They want to put him in positions where he can have positive nights. The Lakers are great defensively on the ball, so it would have been real hard for him to attack the basket. You don’t want him to go back into jump-shooting mode. I would expect his minutes to come back against the T-Wolves.

matt, swat aint better than boone, who did a good job on the boards tonight

SWat is so clumsy he knocked down Marv Albert by backing into his chair at courtside…that’s SWat’s court vision for you! :)

by jirohkanzaki on Dec 19, 2009 10:37 PM EST reply actions

@diehardNFFLbarnone – Mike Brown isn’t a good basketball coach. Why do I keep seeing his name here…

by Sebastian Pruiti on Dec 19, 2009 10:39 PM EST reply actions

Seriously, I think Lee’s last season is no different from Simmons’ last season, in terms of offense. Both were among top shooters in the league, and both were a product of a system oriented around superstar(s).
Lee is shooting not better than TWill. There’s absolutely no excuse for that, and Lee’s actually the one with a lot of playing time to get into rhythm yet he keeps on bricking it.

by biggie on Dec 19, 2009 10:39 PM EST reply actions

@andres boone did a better job on the boards because he got a lot of playing time. Sean only played about 4 minutes that’s garbage time what can he do in 4 minutes. He played fairly well against toronto.

by 1milord on Dec 19, 2009 10:40 PM EST reply actions

@ jirohkanzaki – maybe if Sean Williams actually got some playing this wouldn’t happen.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Dec 19, 2009 10:41 PM EST reply actions

dude boone has no offense. swat atleast has some defense. and why mike brown he coaches the cavs. we better beat wolves

by matt on Dec 19, 2009 10:41 PM EST reply actions

@ diehardNFFLbarnone

The Lakers announcer commended Boone for working hard on the boards. He did a good job. Did you watch that block on Bynum? Swat doesnt deserve any playing time ahead of Josh, sorry!

by Andrés on Dec 19, 2009 10:41 PM EST reply actions

@ Sebastian Pruiti – Our problems are on DEFENSE, which means Mike Brown is exactly what this team needs.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Dec 19, 2009 10:42 PM EST reply actions

Mike Brown actually is a good coach, but more important, he’s currently employed. So I don’t know how diehard supposes the Nets can hire him.

Guys the Nets were playing the best team in the NBA and we won in the 1st half..but

Devin Harris needs to step up like he did in the 2nd
Courtney Lee needs to learn how to play Basketball

For real how did mike brown get mentioned here about coaching the nets.

by 1milord on Dec 19, 2009 10:58 PM EST reply actions

I like Swat better than Boone, but Kiki needs to do this until the end of season to help Brooks on defensive side. On offense Boone is really hopeless. If I were him, I’ll shoot the free throws right away. I would not take a deep breath and not stare too long at the basket, just shoot at once. He seems to me that he has an irregular heartbeat, and by focusing more it just mess it up more. CDr is dong fine , but he is just too small, not like Kobe who can judge the defense and just make a fade away shot. I guess he dribbles too low and only sees the foot of the players & too late to realize it’s either Gasol or Bynum in front of him. Swat has talent but it seems like he really doesn’t know how to play the game. Maybe he should play in china and acquire a different style , I think he learned basketball games from Nintendo games.

@the GM. I am not quite sure who is looking off CDR. He put up 20 shots. He scored well which i love to say and played good defense on Ron Artest. He took a number of bad shots. Lopez had a similar game to CDR. He put numbers up but his shooting percentage was bad. He rebounded. He passed the ball. How many assists did CDR have? he still does not impress me with his passing. Just like Lopez has not impressed me with his passing out of the double teams. Are you a nets fan or a CDR fan? cause i think your just a CDR fan.

What bull was KiKi talking about player development…giving Hassel and Simmons big minutes and none to T-will or Swat

by Antoine on Dec 19, 2009 11:09 PM EST reply actions

Define “good shots” when they are only falling 36% of the times? Lee doesn’t take risk because he doesn’t have that ability to creat his own shots. If he does, it would’ve made him look 10 times worse than he already is. He’s taking open shots now and bricking them.

I think they did ok, and a loss like this to the Lakers seems to make sense. Kobe would not let LA lose, or even come close, and everybody knew he would come out in the 2nd half and control the game.

Losing to teams that are nowhere near as good as LA by large deficits is a problem, like Toronto.

Lopez is going to be a badass in a couple of years, that guy is really good… this is only his 2nd year and he is way ahead of where I thought he would be, considering how poorly the Nets have played and have distributed the ball thus far.

If only Boone could shoot! Plays hard every night this year, and makes some great plays.

And, to all who keep debating about SWAT being better than Boone or vice versa…

SWAT is a niche player, and when he fully gets hold of that notion then he will be quite valuable- blocking shots, hustle d, energy boosts – no more fadeaway jumpers or bad passes, rushing set plays. Guy has bigtime athleticism that he has not figured out how to use properly, and we can see it in glimpses how effective he could be.

Boone plays smart basketball, and his biggest mistakes are that he misses open jumpers- or lacks confidence to actually take them – and of course the free-throw shooting is horrible. Boone rebounds well, and plays his designated role as he is asked to do – this is obvious, and he is one of the smartest guys on the team without a doubt. He has turned it around for himself this year in a lot of ways.

You can’t compare the two guys though, completely different.

Let’s put this in perspective. NJIT has more wins than the Nets this year (3).

This team is the worst Nets team I’ve ever seen and that says a lot since I’ve followed them since the Dr. J, Larry Kenon days. Let’s hope the new rich owner hates losing and goes out and gets all the talent under the cap that he can afford.

Uh Superb – the team is 2-26 and CDR has played in 22 of the games. I’d say we are in bad way regardless. (understatement of the year).

by Isaac on Dec 20, 2009 12:14 AM EST reply actions

I was at the game and felt like the only Nets fan there; the rest were all Lakers fans. It was rather depressing. Look, bottom line is that we are gonna get a pick from 1-3 in the draft this June. if we could get John Wall, then maybe we could attract a guy like LeBron or Amaré or somebody. This season is, and was meant to be, a complete “rebuilding” year, and I know that deep down Rod Thorn knew this team would not win more than 15 games. My prediction is that they will go 10-72.

PS: I think there is something wrong with Courtney Lee. He was a dead eye shooter last year. Some may say it’s because Howard and Lewis were passing him the ball, but he is getting the same wide open shots this year as last year. Today he missed two wide open 3 pointers in the short corner and was WAY off both times. Something is definitely not right – perhaps he has yet to fully recover from his injury from early in the season.

by Alex F on Dec 20, 2009 12:51 AM EST reply actions

my guess is CLee wants to get traded ASAP and out of current situation.

by JohnY on Dec 20, 2009 1:00 AM EST reply actions

First and foremost, Sean Williams is NOT better than Josh Boone. I think Josh has developed into a really good role player at this point with the opportunity he has been getting. I agree with most of you when you say he has no offensive game – cant hit jumpers/free throws, hence he is a role player. He bangs boards and gets dunks, tips, and put-backs. Doesn’t that sound like what most people want to draft? On the messages boards, many of you say you want a “bruiser” type power forward. Well, I think Josh is developing into that.

Sean Williams on the other hand is a clutz – no other way to put it. Take a look during the game, Sean knocked over Marv Albert and Jim Spinarkle. That reflects how he plays on the court. He often misses defensive assignments, turns the ball over, or makes needless fouls. He is far more inconsistent than Josh. There are some nights when Sean looks outstanding and you see potential, but he is often inconsistent.

Especially since Sean is not part of the organization’s future, there is little reason to play him over Boone anyways. Boone, on the other hand, can be resigned over the summer and can fill the need of a “bruiser” type power forward.

Also, Devin Harris played reminiscent of his breakout year last year during the second quarter – what happened during the second half? Harris’ mentality seemed to shift away from the hoop as he took more jump shots and got less touches. Remember this game consists of four quarters, you can’t just play in one of them, Harris.

by JJ22 on Dec 20, 2009 1:01 AM EST reply actions

mike brown is a terrible coach..he’s the reason why they didn’t make it to the finals last year. there total offense is one play “give the ball to lebron”.

by jeffrey sutton on Dec 20, 2009 1:07 AM EST reply actions

Brook needs lots of help… and he needed it yesterday. We can’t expect Devin’s second quarter display on a nightly basis. He has no inside presence to complement him and take pressure off of him to make plays. He doesn’t have a consistent outside shooter to stretch the defense and keep it honest. This will only get worse before it gets better. A move needs to be made before the trading deadline to make this season salvageable. However, by the trading deadline, we’ll likely be out of playoff contention in the diminished East, so I guess the thinking up front is “why salvage this season?” or “We’ll be in the hunt for a lottery pick, anyway.” On the other hand, this is much too painful to watch.

by MrT on Dec 20, 2009 1:44 AM EST reply actions

Glad we’re back on the Mike Brown talk, he’s really important to the Nets.

by NiceBull on Dec 20, 2009 3:48 AM EST reply actions

Still waiting on Boone to draw his first charge this year. Sean has several. Still waiting on Boone to get more than taps, and uncontested rebounds because of inattention. He is fundamentally poor at blocking out for a supposed good rebounder as well. No way this guy is a 30 minute player on an NBADL team to be honest.

by kg on Dec 20, 2009 6:07 AM EST reply actions

I don’t know what to say to these Nets. But they have to do what needs to be done. Otherwise, I would say that this present situation is career-threatening to every Nets player now. As they say, you’ll never work in this town again.

It is super sad when we are encourage because we are “winning” at the half. Too bad it is the end of the game that counts. Kiki is clueless. The roster is filled with role players, not starters. Our hopes rest on unproven, and ineffective players. Thorn and Kiki should be ashamed to show their faces in public with this group.

by geo on Dec 20, 2009 8:46 AM EST reply actions

Hey remember during the off season when all the news was how hurt C Lee was after being traded. It was like he was all that! Man we got duped!! Twill for Clee in the starting spot! we already know
what C lee has a 9 ppg how about T will we got to see his real potential. CLee a role player not a starter!!!!!!!!

by Kupalski on Dec 20, 2009 8:47 AM EST reply actions

Read D’Allesandro’s article and see what a joke Kiki is: He wants to strip the D down to just guarding man to man. So when they get beat, Lopez and Boone don’t have to rotated – now easier buckets or an excuse not to help. He has not clue – they should zone since they are incapable of containing on the wing or guarding the 3 if they rotate. What about the 38% shooting, Kiki? What is the solution, Kiki, to concentrate on only shooting and no passing or cutting? Simplify it? Dribble, shoot. Dribble pass shoot. The Kiki offense and defense are less than I’d expect from a middle school coach.

by geo on Dec 20, 2009 8:55 AM EST reply actions

You can’t get water out of a rock. The team stinks. Yi stinks, Simmons stinks, Lee stinks, Alston stinks, both Williams are mental cases, Battie and Najera are too old and always injured. Basically you’ve got Harris, Lopez, CDR, Hayes, Dooling and Boone.

Boone’s can’t shoot, and Hayes is injury prone.

Go to Brooklyn – PLEASE.

by halwas on Dec 20, 2009 11:36 AM EST reply actions

This week shows that superstars like LBJ and Kobe coast against the Nets and turn it on when they need to. It’s noblesse oblige, NBA style. Can’t draw any positive conclusions from it at all.

Nets’ Super Bowl is coming up – will they beat MN? Is Vegas making book on breaking the worst season ever record?

by mt57 on Dec 20, 2009 11:48 AM EST reply actions

Strip out CDR, DH and B-Lo, rest of team 10-35. 29%.

Compare Odom and Farmar – 14 for 18.

What are the Nets paying the rest of the team for? They are absolutely awful.

by mt57 on Dec 20, 2009 11:51 AM EST reply actions

the problem I have with Lee is he misses way too many layups forget the mid range, let me be clear he can shoot the ball and has enough height to dunk, he gets to the rim and also does create space for himself so what is the reason for all those misses? is he worth remaining on the team, because the lack of concentration that he shows and the softness when he drives to the basket both are not going to change they are part of his personality. If they don’t change by end of the year (effort has to be consistent not one game) the guy should be traded while he still has some value.

CDR – has in game attitude issues? he is one of the lousiest with his soft passes actually he turns the ballover while he is handing over the ball to a teammate? This has happened far too many times may opposing scouting reports have his lackadaisical passing skills on there as well, he should commit to recitfy this if he wants to be a real starter in this league.

by Sunil on Dec 20, 2009 12:05 PM EST reply actions

I don’t see CDR having that much of an issue with passing.
I saw the play you were referring to. Alston asked for the ball, but he didn’t come and get it, his defenders did.
The pass is as much about the receiver coming in to reach for it as much as the passer making it. CDR is more efficient on offense than all Nets guards right now, includiing Devin Harris. And it was Devin Harris who average more turnovers. So I don’t see how CDR is not already a real starter in this league.

by biggie on Dec 20, 2009 12:44 PM EST reply actions

For all of the CDR fans and detractors alike, per CDR’s Twitter Page after the game last night:
