Nets Drop Fifth Straight

Defense was the issue once again as the Nets dropped their fifth straight game, a 108-92 loss to the Jazz at the Izod Center Wednesday night. The game was close for the first quarter and a half, but the Jazz gained some separation with a 10-2 run in the second. The Nets never really threatened after that. Utah shot 56 percent from the field and were led by Carlos Boozer (26 points and 10 rebounds) and Deron Williams (20 points and 14 assists). Brook Lopez led the Nets with 23 points and 10 boards and Terrence Williams added 17 points, but the point guard combination of Devin Harris (1-9) and Rafer Alston (3-10) shot struggled from the field.

You could see the quit in this team by the end. After the team missed a shot and the Jazz rebounded in the 4th, Brooke put his head down and his shoulders slumped and he started walking before he realized and ran down the floor.
And the defense really dropped after Frank left. I’ve never seen so many freebies.

I predicted that Harris was not going to top his production from last year. I predicted his FG % will drop and assists will go down.
I also predicted that C. Lee will only increase his PPG by lowering his FG%, which is turning out to be horribly true. He ain’t no “star star star” in Shaq’s words; Lopez and CDR are the only ones showing any prospect for being a star in the league. Harris is going back to his old Dallas’ sixth men self.

I am starting to think we should consider trading Devin before the trading deadline this season. I would consider trading him along with Najera for expiring contracts, a good young point guard, and an early to mid first round draft pick in 2010, supposedly a deep draft. I would consider guys like DJ Augustin, George Hill, Steph Curry, Rodney Stuckey, Bayless/Fernandez, Drajic/Clark, Rubio. I am not sure Harris is one of the cornerstone pieces that we need and if we shed more salary we can become the only team in the league to accomodate two max contracts to free agents. And we still may get a John Wall in the draft.

Is it me or has the problem been defense for the past few games, and I heard that Anthony Randolph is on the block so if we could trade for him maybe we will get a decent four

These guys are all too young to weather losing streaks. Veterans would be able to pull themselves up again and forget the last loss. But they don’t have that and it’s not like Kiki has the experience to motivate a team to keep on powering through. It’s gonna be a long season.

Does anyone else feel really bad for Sean Williams?
He is the one guy that seems like he wants to be out there, he cheers on his team mates all the time from what I see, he seems to get along with people, and he is athletic.
Eduardo Najera should be replaced with Sean, Najera cannot layup, free throw, or barley shoot 3’s.
The guy is a bum

@ biggie – Chris Douglas-Roberts is not showing much of anything either, which means at this point that Brook Lopez is the only player on our roster who MAY develop into something good and even the chances of that happening without some drastic roster changes is EXTREMELY LIMITED.

I predicted Harris would be the next scapegoat after Frank. After Harris gets traded, I predict next scapegoat will be Yi. Then Thorn and Kiki. The blame should really go to Ratner because he created this situation.
This is the gang that can’t shoot straight. We had so many open shots that weren’t even close. Worst 3 pt % in the league. So all the teams we play just pack the lane. Brook is getting double and triple teamed and no one can hit the open shots.
We can blame all of the players. But they are what they are. We need more talent plain and simple. Everybody cried about small ball. Well now there’s very little small ball. Guess what? We still suck.
by supreme on Dec 16, 2009 10:38 PM EST reply actions
Its too bad there isn’t another elite PG prospect in the draft besides Wall. Then with Wall and Favors being the top 2 selections, you can almost guarantee yourself the ability of drafting a high end PG which would provide some cushion in shopping Harris around. But you run the risk of trading him and having no one else to fall back on, though I do appreciate what Dooling brings. I don’t mean to pile on Harris after a rough game, but it just highlights that when he cannot knock down his mid range jumper, and he usually cannot, there is not much else he brings to the table. I would rather have more flexibility in free agency next year and a somewhat less talented PG to be honest.

Absolutely correct – it is about time we start letting this be known when we go to Nets games. He has avoided the wrath of the fans for far too long.

I think tonight was TWill’s best game as a Net. He continued to take the ball to the basket – and when he does that he is very hard to defend. So it seems that his recent benching is paying dividends. Courtney lee played pretty well tonight too – again he took the ball to the basket a few times.
Do not understand the rotation midway thru the 4th quarter. TWill was playing really well and they subbed Hassel for him. With 5 minutes left (and a 10 point game) it all fell apart once Hassel came in. At one point we had Brook and nobody taller than 6’6’’ on the floor (Hassel, Alston, DH, Lee) while Utah had 3 7 footers. Makes no sense at all. That is what cost us the game.
Also I was thinking of this tonight – can anyone name a bigger bust for the Nets than Najera in the 2000s? When you consider his 4 year deal, the limited games he has been healthy for and his horrible production when on the floor – I honestly don’t think we have had a bigger bust….He could be one of the worst players in the NBA
by Ryan243 on Dec 16, 2009 10:44 PM EST reply actions
TWill looked good today. I like how he is taking it to the hoop with aggression right now. If he keeps up that mindset, he will become one of the better rookies in the league for sure.

Eddy Curry is not a Net. You can’t compare any move made by the Knicks because most of those moves and decisions were so stupid a 5th grader would have been smarter.

@ Chris2
Yeah, TWitter showed some nice moves and really was the reason the nets stayed in the game and weren’t blown out. I hope that he keeps the same mentality though. Good things happen when he goes to the hole rather than when he takes a contested 15 foot floater…yikes.
He needs to improve freethrow shooting also. btw The nets really miss Yi here. I felt his length would have helped us on the defensive end and his offensive game would have brought us closer. Can’t wait until he comes back.

@ Ryan243,
I totally agree with you. I feel that Najera hurts us more than helps. IMO, Najera shows a type of “fake” hustle. He looks like he tries to get the ball, but never really gets it. Also, Najera takes bad 3-point attempts and I’ve rarely seen him make them. Definitely not the player I thought he’d be coming from Denver.

Why are you guy’s acting so surprised ….Harris is and always will be inconsistent..Harris plays when Harris wants too….And frank’s great “D” didn’t win us a game this year….forget frank…Trade Harris for Rubio…Let’s move on….
by NetFan48 on Dec 16, 2009 10:54 PM EST reply actions
I know a lot of fans are down on TWill, and its understandable, but I like what I have seen from him overall. If he masters one simple concept – “Why take a contested 20 foot jumper when I can get to the hoop pretty much at will for a lay in or a foul”, he will instantly be an effective and efficient player. I have faith that with coaching and a mentalitly of self improvement he will eventually get that and we will have an exciting and impactful player, a keeper.

Harris for Rubio? Are you crazy? Instead of losing by 10 or 20, we’d lose by 35 on any given night with how bad Rubio’s defense is. People bag on Harris, but is this Rubio kid the real deal? I highly doubt it. He looks too frail to and not quick enough to be a good defender. Reminds me more of a poor man’s Jose Calderon, who’s been over hyped for playing in the gold medal game.

I posted this a couple months ago..At the deadline, do Dooling, Najera + Simmons for AK47, Maynor and depending what the Nets hierachy feels, either Koufas,or this yr’s 2nd rounder or a ist in 2012. Then target either Boozer or Lee in the free agent market. Dooling + Najera have guarantees for next yr, and both give the Jazz experienced vets. Maynor gives us our long term backup at the one, AK makes us better next yr + we have his rights and more cap room for next yr when we’ll have a better feel for what we need

With the way Najera has been playing, i doubt any team will want to take him on. I like AK47 for his versatility though. He’d be an immediate impact on this team with his defense and shooting. I don’t think we’d get maynor out of this deal though.

RJ Trade = F (if there was anything lower than an F it would go to infinity)

Harris is what he is. He needs other talented players around him to be a good pg. With so many players that can’t shoot he looks horrible. He’s not as good as he thinks he is and the fans that complain about him expect more than he is capable of delivering. You can’t get assists if nobody on your team can shoot. He’s not a great shooter so he gets to the hole. But when the lane is clogged he has no lanes to drive. So he jacks up shots. The mix of this team is horrible. If the Ntes spent money they could have a decent team. But they don’t so you get what you pay for. If you pay for a 2010 Benz you get a Benz. If you pay for a 95 Buick that’s what you get. Ratner bought the Buick. And we watch the Buick break down on the side of the road every night and complain about the tires. This fiasco is the result of poor management and the players catch all of the heat. You could put CP3 on this team and they wouldn’t win. The roster sucks!
by supreme on Dec 16, 2009 11:12 PM EST reply actions
Honestly I really don’t think AK47 is all that. I have not been impressed with his game in the last couple of years. He did have a nice pass inside to Boozer from the free throw line tonight though, but overall I see him ultimately being like a Najera.
As for Najera – I am not sure why he is not the main recipient of hatred on this site. He SUCKS. I honestly think he could be the WORST veteran in the NBA. His defense sucks. His shot selection is horrible. As JJ22 put it – his hustle is all fake hustle. Watching him play reminds me of watching these 10 year olds play at halftime. I think that if we could trade him for a 4th round draft pick in 2060 the Nets should do it. He is absolutely horrible. I truly believe that he was the worst signing of the Thorn era when you consider his 4 year deal, guaranteed money and the production you have gotten from him.

This has been bothering me since about 3 minutes into tonights game. Watching Utah on offense was like watching a coaches clinic on ball movement on offense and finding the open man. Deron Williams is an All-Star PG yet he quickly starts the offense with a pass early in the shot clock to facilitate passsing the ball around and finding the open man. Utah is also very good at skip passes. Ultimately Utah rarely has a bad offensive possession and virtually never forces a shot.
The Nets on the other hand have 2 PGs (DH, Alston) who pound the rock at the top of the key until there is 14 seconds or less on the shot clock. Then the PG usually looks to drive a clogged lane as Brook is continually double teamed and then when the lane is closed they pull the ball back out. Now there is 8 seconds or less on the shot clock and you see forced shots. How many 24 second violations have we had this year? I would bet money that we lead the league in them, and by a wide margin.
What was interesting tonight was how Brook had a relatively dominant 1st quarter (10 points) yet then did nothing in the 2nd quarter (2 points). If you watch the game again – you will see that Brook was posting up lower on the block in the 1st quarter which leads to easier baskets for Brook. Yet as the game progressed, he was continually pushed higher on the block – so by the 4th quarter his post ups were near the foul line.
This is all a direct result of the lack of ball movement. It is so easy for defenses to simply play off the PG and let him dribble the rock for 10 seconds before looking to initiate the offense. While the PG is overdribbling – Brook is pushed off the low block up towards the foul line. This allows the defense to then cheat in a double on Brook now clogging the paint preventing easy PG penetration. And there is almost no real movement on the wings as they stand by waiting for the offense to finally begin.
The only way this could work is if the Nets had a reliable outside shooting presence. In the past it worked because VC could hit these carnival like shots as the clock wound down saving the possession. We no longer have anoyone like that so we see a lot of forced shots at the buzzer or forced passes leading to shot clock violations.
If I were the coaching staff – I would institute in the next game that there should be no less than 18 seconds on the shot clock before the first pass is made. This will lead to more motion on offense, more open lanes for penetration and will ultimately prevent teams from doubling Brook as much.
I’m overly tired and this was kind of a rambling email – but I think the Nets run the most stagnant offensive sets in the league and the majority of their problems stem from overdribbling at the top of the key and starting their offensive sets too deep in the shot clock.

It makes perfect sense. That is why we go through so many scoring droughts. I do think we should have kept Terrence Williams and Josh Boone in the game. They were both playing well and are really good rebounders. Instead, we put Trenton Hassell in at power forward. Huh? Don’t get me wrong, I like the way Hassell has been playing, but, playing him at the 4? I am no expert, but, sometimes I wish I was on the bench atleast making decisions on what rotations to play.

@ The GM, First off you need to use caps lock key more conservatively. I am a fan of both CDR and Lopez, and to say Lopez lacks heart and toughness and that he doesn’t compete is just blind hate. Are we watching the same player? Lopez constantly works at rebounding and running up the court to try to get the ball in transition. Look at his numbers. He will conistently get us 20-10 while doing it effciently most of the time. YOU know WHAT cdr LACKS? HE lacks SELFLESSNESS. once HE has THE ball IT is TOUGH getting IT back FROM him. (isn’t the caplock key annoying sometimes). Look at how CDR gets his 20+ points. Look at the number of shots he takes. Sure he has a good percentage and his jump shot has improved as has his ability to drive. But he takes like 17-22 shots to score 20 or above. Lopez has been great at drawing fouls which is something CDR has not impressed me with so far.

Harris was good last year because of VC, but left on his own he has to work harder to become great. When Harris wasn’t so great last year, VC would cover his bad game – which we have nobody who can come close to what VC does on this team as it is now. That’s the thing, there are very few guys that can have consistent game all the time, and that’s why the team concept is so important- gotta be able to have other guys who can step up too. Everything just hangs by a thread with this team, if one thing goes wrong it seems nobody is there to step in to it’s place.

Brook is a top 5 center. Period. No arguing. He will get better when there is a real PF playing. BETTER THAN 20 10 THINK ABOUT IT!
CDR is better than CLee. Period. Better jump shot, more heart, and playing out of position.
DH lost his jumper somewhere and needs to find it quick. Defenses are clogging the lane for him and the rest of the team.
TWill is not a bust. He needs playing time.period
Yi will make this team better with his length and jumper.
A month from now the new owner will be approved and this team will be healthy.
January will be an exciting month.
Expect this team to look very different after the trade deadline.

This team needs to start the offense earlier. Ball movement. Move it around the perimeter as opposed to pounding the ball up top. Will prevent defenses from doubling Brook in the post and pushing him off the low block. Prevent defenses from sagging in the middle. The constant dribbling up top serves no benefit for this team or any team. I am not sure why this has not been stopped already.
by Ryan243 on Dec 17, 2009 8:09 AM EST reply actions
Harris has unique skills. Even when not shooting well, he is getting free throws. He is also getting many of his assists on passes to Lopez. No way consider trading Harris unless Wall is drafted and they can’t coexist. Maybe Avery Johnson would straighten out Harris on defense, afterall.
Hope Nets fans realize it was a mistake not to make a better attempt to get Boozer before the season. Now his price tag is too high and Simmons has proven to be worthless.
Apologies are also in order for TWill detractors. He ain’t no nothing of a Bust. He IS following his coach’s orders. TWill’s minutes should keep increasing with starting SF position by end of year. Let TWill get some of the assists that Harris is missing.
If you add in Dooling, CDR, Hayes and Yi, then Nets could make most games close. Too bad Battie seems finished.
At least Nets fans are starting to think TRADE again, which is a positive sign. Now that Proky is almost on board, a trade could be possible. However, Nets have to be prepared to GIVE UP, not RECEIVE draft picks. As NI points out, Proky could always BUY draft picks later on, if needed – $3 million for a late first rounder.
Obviously a keeper Physical PF should be on Nets radar. All that counts is to finish the season strong, now that a bottom of league record is all but locked up.

Listening to Kiki’s interview, I like what I hear. He identifies the problem of transition baskets and attributes the problem to defense. That’s a man who knows what it takes to win. He simply doesn’t have the talent on this team to play defense. Lopez is above average but slow. Swat is very good but won’t play cuz he doesn’t have a future with us and can’t stay out of foul trouble when he does for an extended period of time. Boone is average and on level with a backup and that’s all we have. We have a big problem with court awareness. The anticipation of where to be before being attacked by the opposition is something we’re not good at. Players like Duncan, Gasol and Lopez are great a being in the right position without great athletic ability.

The Nets were relatively even in boards and TOs. (The Jazz had more boards but that is only because the Nets missed more shots. %wise, the two teams were even on both offensive and defensive boards). The real difference is that they cannot hit a jump shot. Can. Not. Shoot. And they once again failed to defend well at all.

I agree with Ryan both Harris and Altson dribble too much. Unfortunately, I have to come back to what I said last year. If we had the 1-3 pick, I would have picked Rubio. Harris is a SG in a PG body. We need a pass first PG. I am not sure if Wall is a Pass first PG but I would love to get him. If all the comparisons to Kidd, Paul, and whoever is true, I want Wall. Everyone on this team would be better. Lee needs to come off screens. Lee isnt good in ISOs. Twill has shown that if HE attacks the rim every time he touches the ball GREAT things happen.

@netsvc You’re the 1 that needs 2 think b4 u Speak..Seems 2me You’re arguing a point no 1 mentioned but U..hmm do I think CDR is better than Brook? I neva mentioned that..my statement was if CDR was touching the ball half as much as Brook, we’d have 10 wins..now as far as the BEST CDR bein is 6th man of the year 1day…I think you’re DEAD WRONG..u keep screamin 20/10 4 Lopez which is cool and all, but CDRs numbers are pretty darn good for a player that “somehow” wound up as a 4th/5th option on this team of Stooges..sooooo my point is pleeease THINK about what CDRs numbers would be WITH a FAIR amount of touches..DH is outta control, C Lee is just..scared, Alston is a turnover waitin 2 happen…and THOSE are the guys takin ALL of the shots..sooo pleeeease THINK what our record would be IF Brook&CDR took the majority of those shots..ESPECIALLY in the crunchtime..Brook is our Post, CDR is our Perimeter Threat…

@jerry25 its funny how u say DH has unique skills..like what? Slowing up our offense with overdribbling and terrible shot selection?? There’s a reason MOST of his assists go 2 Lopez..easiest assist he can get..Do u see what happens when he tries 2 penetrate and dish? TURNOVER..and HOW can u explain a Pg having games with 1assist, 3assists, 0assists? And PLEASE Don’t say guys aren’t makin shots…the correct answer is? DH has a “unique talent” of NOT PASSING THE BALL. PERIOD

@The GM, Cdr doesn’t pass the ball. Stop with that. And no Brook leads the time wiith FT% but how does that pertain to anything i said. Brook draws fouls, Your argument is so flawed. The times CDR has been giving the ball alot lets see how many fouls he drew. LEts start with the outlier game. He had a game Where he took 20 shots and shot 14 free throws. Prettty good. Now i am going to list the rest of the games off and the number of free throws he shot compared to shots taken. 25 shots taken-12 free throws taken(which was good), 17-5, 17-4, 25-5, 21-4, 19-0, 20-0 ( I don’t count the tecnhical). Thats quite alot of shots and his foul drawing ability doesnt look all that spectacular. Brook Can not pass out of a double team if his teammates do not cut. CDR very rarely cuts but when he does its pretty and brook gets the ball to him. So when Brook gets the ball all he does is A. turn it over and B. Jack up a bad shot? Hmmmmmmm. Are you sure were wwatching the same game? Brook has been able to learn to deal with the double team better through the course of the seaosn. And also he scores most of the time or passes out of a double team.

I think that on a really good team, cdr might be no better than a third or fourth option. I like the kid’s heart and competitiveness but I think he is a ball stopper, although it may be hard to pass when nobody else can make a shot. But then couldn’t the same be said for Harris, if he had guys that made shots his assists would be higher, if guys made shots the lanes wouldn’t be clogged and would allow both brook and Harris better paint attacks. To paint cdr as the guy that can carry us to a few victories…idk I highly disagree with this…and yeah najera is sucking big time. I thought twill did a nice job driving it in, I wouldn’t quit on him yet.

@ Negblizz….
I agree that CDR can be a bit of a ballstopper. It also seems that when he’s not stopping the ball, he’s sort of non-existent out there.

I just can’t watch Alston anymore. I have always hated his game because his gross offensive inefficiency is obscured by some memorable plays. I would love to see a stat on how many dribbles each player takes—Alston would lead the team by a wide margin. I’m not even mentioning his defense because it is non-existent.
In an interview, Alston said that he can still keep up with the young players on the court. You’re on a 2 win team, ding dong. In what universe are you keeping up with anyone. Yeah, it’s not all his fault that we stink, but he sure ain’t helping by pounding the ball and then making terrible decisions or going one on five. Dooling’s healthy enough—he’s got a pulse. Trade Alston already!

@Negblizz ok..what would Brook be on a Really good team? Definitely NOT bein FED as he is now…he’s the ONLY center on the team…how is CDR a ball stopper? He doesnt dribble for NO REASON like our Pgs..he DOESN’T force shots…if he isn’t creating then He Swings the ball…what are you talkin about? And I think Lopez might be no better than 3rd/4th option on a “Really good team”
