Nets Provide Little Resistance for Hawks

The Nets' defense took Sunday off in Atlanta as they dropped their third straight game, a 130-107 loss to the Hawks. The Nets were actually up two with 5 1/2 minutes left in the second quarter, but the Hawks closed the half on a 19-5 run. They led by as many as 23 in the third quarter and 26 in the fourth. Brook Lopez had another double-double and the Nets had five guys in double-figures, led by Devin Harris' 23 points, but they allowed the Hawks to shoot 53 percent from the field and 11-17 from 3-point range. Terrrence Williams had his best game in three weeks, scoring 18 points and grabbing 7 rebounds. On the injury front, Chris Douglas-Roberts said he expects to play Tuesday. An MRI confirmed no serious damage. Jarvis Hayes continues to put his return around Christmas. Atlanta's 130 points was the most the Nets have allowed since the double-OT thriller against the Suns three years ago.

I cannot believe this team!
If one player does good one game he does bad the next game.
Brook Lopez cannot do good against top teams, he just gets killed then starts throwing his arms up and whinning.
This team is so bad its just terrible, I dont see how we went from the 11th worst team to the worst team! What has this team done!
The management is just full of flaws and this franchise is a joke.
I lost all hope.
And if we are doing this bad why dont WE TRADE!

All of you will slowly but surely begin to miss L Frank. He stressed defense all the time. We were in the upper half on defense until he was fired.
Not only that, we were in just about every game with Frank. Since Frank got fired we are 2-5 and those 5 losses were of the blowout variety.

we were without yi, cdr, dooling, and hayes. we put up 107 on one of the best teams in the nba on the road. our defense isnt that good, but twill was solid and guys contributed. not that big of a deal. go nets.

The only time the game was exciting was when Sean was in the game. Of the two Josh and Sean the wrong guy is getting the minutes, no matter how well Josh plays, we are not going to resign him if we ever want to win a champinonship it is exactly Josh type of players we dont want in our team. Sean is a nut case but undoubtedly has immense talent. he can be the guy who comes from the bench and gives us a lift, his failure cannot be attributed to him alone, thats part of the job description of the coach you win games but you also build a team, guys over the course of one or two years help you win games, sean was not handled well.
Terrence Williams has been mentioned as an excellent passer and is a pass first guy well I dont see that. This is similar to anotonie wright was a better shooter than houston
crap. The guy is a good ball handler but doesnt do the right pass. He did a lot of good things today but has to learn to pass allow the game to come to you take what the defense gives you.
Offense needs to runt through Brook guards are not simply good enough to realize this, they simply say the right things just dont show it on court.
Its a good thing if Porky cleans house. We really need a clean slate, some ego’s like even Harris’s need to set straight.
If we had 2001 – KIDD we would have been contending even with this team. They have been showing Hardwood classics on NBA Tv man it hurts.

I really never even considered the possibility that a team could post a record worse than 9-73. Even the worst teams in my lifetime were easily good enough for 15 wins. Not this one. We have David Stern and Bruce Ratner to thank.
A team that went to back to back NBA Finals when this joke of a sports owner arrived, is now enroute to the worst record in league history. I never thought it was possible. Folks – it’s possible.

Sean Williams needs to play
3 blocks in like 1 minute he should of played when Brook was out!
by Randy Oreens on Dec 13, 2009 7:41 PM EST reply actions
Ronnie, you act like we never had blowout losses with Frank.
Yeah, Frank stressed defense for five years. Did he accomplish it? No! Did your teachers tell you the difference between talking and doing? Frank coached over 30 different NBA players in his five years here. And he never walked the walk. Kiki is not better, but that doesn’t make Frank any less guilty.
by biggie on Dec 13, 2009 7:41 PM EST reply actions
@Randy Oreen Brook had the best game of the nets against the hawks. The Nets did not involve him ata ll and Lopez played hard throughout the whole game. Are we watching the same game? I really don’t understand what you mean and i assume your a hater because your statement is extremely misinformed about this game.

^^ agree with the Sean Williams part. It kills me to see swat on the bench while Boone and Najera gets playing time. Are you kidding me kiki? bring back frank atleast he played him a bit

this is disgusting!! everyone could have guessed we were not going to win this game but nets dont play defense. i understand we are supposed to be a run and gun team but when a team gives up 130 points 9 outta 10 times there going to loose. slow up the pace a little bit to put yourself in a position to play defense because you have more energy. and we need to see some damn heart from someone.
by wellsjon002 on Dec 13, 2009 7:53 PM EST reply actions
Biggie – good points above. Kiki is not doing any better, but that does not mean Frank was a good NBA coach. He underachieved every year he was here – and that should come as no surprise since he was not qualified for the job from day one.
by Isaac on Dec 13, 2009 8:05 PM EST reply actions
so is this Franks fauly too!!! Nets suck! They are unwatchable. No coach can win with this team. Enough said.
by johnfried on Dec 13, 2009 8:06 PM EST reply actions
S. Williams showed something. He needs more time out there to develop his game. If he got more minutes I think he could develop a 15 foot jumper. Boone has got to learn to shoot foul shots. Its embarrassing.
And why is Kiki still wasting minutes on Simmons? Simmons has now reached the stage where he can do absolutely nothing right. He’s washed up. If you need to put someone in – put in Hassel.
I’m starting to feel sorry for these guys. Its pathetic.
by halwas on Dec 13, 2009 8:19 PM EST reply actions
We just have a horrible team, it’s plain and simple. No one plays defense, even though they keep preaching about it. Our frontcourt is a joke, we get pounded inside by every team that we’ve been playing. Our backcourt is a bigger joke, because no one seems to be able to make a shot, defend, assist, or stop the ball from turning it over.
We have horrible ball movement, and not playing as a team, but individuals. No one is doing the little things that help team wins… like making the extra pass, or blocking out for a rebound.
As much as I like this team, it’s getting really tiring and hard to watch them play… especially when they play so pathetic. It wouldn’t be as bad if everyone had done the little things, or played with some kind of intensity.
The only thing I look forward to is getting a top lottery pick from this season.

Sean Williams is NOT good.
He is a walking, breathing, arrest getting, human foul.
He is not a character guy, so he gets no brownie points.
AND you see him for a good minute stretch, but Kiki and Del, and Frank all saw him day in and day out in practice… and this isn’t football, they actually practice like games sometimes… I don’t think it’s an anti SWat conspiracy.
by Paul B on Dec 13, 2009 9:31 PM EST reply actions

But saying we should play him because nothing else is working and maybe, just maybe, it will be positive & saying we should play him because he’s really our third best player and would be an All Star if he had the opportunity is different.
I guess if the first argument is being made, I might be open to it. Maybe.
by Paul B on Dec 13, 2009 9:41 PM EST reply actions
I noticed that for a while there was “fire frank” rallies and frank was fired.
I’d like to start a new rally give S. Williams minutes.
Maybe if we all keep pointing out that SWat should be getting Boone , Najara and Simmons’ s minutes it will somehow make it to upper management. It’s not like if we start SWat over Boone there will be an offensive drop off. When you’re 2-22 you need to mix things up. Try a new line up. Play SWat more than 3 minutes , with other starters , and see what happens.

And by the way, to KiWi : when you had the briliant idea of trading RJ for Yi and Simmons it was a great trade in terms of salery cap space. But a terrible trade from a basketball stand point. And since you decided to bring in Yi it looks like you are still standing by your decision. You saw Ryan as expandable because he played your pet’s position And why give SWat any playing time, he elbowed the guy you have a man-crush on in the mouth.
@ everyone asking why Simmons is getting playing time : your head coach traded for him and he is still trying to justify the trade.

2) Nets trade ( any of the players i just mentioned ) for some regular to good players
3) Nets Get rid of thorn & ratner, Proky takes the control of all
4) Proky go over the salary cap and sign lebron & wade to 5 years each
5) David Lee sees previous post (4) and decides to sign even for the minimun salary for 1-2 years, phil jackson shows interest as coach
6) Nets new team goes for 70-12, crushes everyone in the playoff save for Orlando who make them struggle (4-3) but finally the nets reach the finals again
7) Nets NBA champs

Good lord, it has gotten so bad that we are appointing SEAN WILLIAMS as our savior. He may make a few hustle plays that provide a spark, but he follows these plays with dumb fouls and ugly post moves. He should play a little more, but let’s not get carried away. How big of a difference will it make? I think Battie is the best short-term solution because he simply has a higher basketball IQ.
PS: Everyone pray for the first pick aka John Wall. That’s all we can hope for at this point. Anything short of that pick would be even more disastrous.

Sean Williams and Josh Boone’s fouls are expendable in keeping other teams from having layup drills. Najera contributes next to nothing. Boone gets rebounds and some garbage pts and Williams gets alters and blocks at least.
Sean needs to play with Lopez
by kg on Dec 14, 2009 2:50 AM EST reply actions
Some of you guys are so funny. No, there’s zero reason to play Sean Williams over Josh Boone, who is clearly the better player and who, unlike Swat, could have a future with this team. The idea that Swat should start is just ludicrous.
What makes people say things like Swat “undoubtedly has immense talent” is beyond me. I could even say he’s a more limited player than Boone in the offensive end.
That being said, I like Swat, and I sure think he should be getting PT ahead of guys who dont have any future with this team either and who suck anyways (see Simmons, Najera, Battie). Those bums are washed up, at least Swat sparks the team w/ his hustle. But seriously, you cant keep Sean on the floor for more than 12-15 minutes.
Dont get me wrong, I’ve been defending swat since preseason, but there must be a reason why everybody plays ahead of him. I still would like to see him getting pt over bums like Simmons, Battie and Najera though and give the kid a last chance. But playing him ahead of Boone would be just pointless.

I am convinced all of these pro-SWAT posts all originate from the same poster. This person does not understand the difference between athleticism and basketball skills. I will refuse to debate anyone who thinks SWAT is a good player and/or has any future on any NBA team.
Not sure why everyone is bent out of shape from all the losing this year. Most sensible Nets fans should have realized when the season started that we would get anywhere between 20-30 wins. What is the difference between losing 10-20 games, as it now appears evident will occur? I think lots of positives have come from this season. Lopez has developed immensly, and CDR has proven to be an important piece to our future. We will get a solid top 3 player, and we have Golden State’s pick, which also likely will fall relatively high in the draft. I don’t think things are that bad. I think the Knicks have it substantially worse: No draft picks to justify this waste of a season, their draft picks have been absolutely mediocre/garbage for the last couple years, and they have no real clear cut guy to build the team around or compliment whatever sucker they will lure to the organization this summer.

You’re 100% right. Hassell, unlike Simmons and Najera, is a good basketball player. He plays smart and hard-nosed, and he’s a very adequate mid-range jump shooter. The Nets should strongly consider keeping him to provide a positive influence for the young guys next year. If not, he could definitely help a contender as a role player.

I think it is pretty clear why I am making the call for Swat. When Lopez and Swat are on the floor we get stops. When they are not we don’t. I don’t care about Swat’s future in the NBA that is his problem. What I do know is Boone and Lopez haven’t been able to do the job in the last 7-8 games since Frank left. Frank was actually playing the Lopez/Swat combo a bit before he left too. People making comments about the defense should also consider that Frank’s knowledge made up for the lack of forward scouting.

I am pretty sure there is no such thing as a Hassell supporter. One can basically lump Hassell, Najera, Simmons, SWAT, Battie, into one giant bag labeled ‘expendable’. Most of these guys would not log serious minutes of most NBA rosters, much less even BE on some rosters.
The only players that are essential to the Nets development are Harris, CDR, Lopez.
The players who still have some time to prove their long term worth are Lee, Yi, and TWill. I don’t think these guys have shown one way or the other yet whether they will be any better than a replacement.
All the other players not mentioned are your average NBA player.
