Nets Help Pacers End Their Slide

The Pacers had lost six straight games and 10 of their last 11, but they looked like a much better team than the Nets in Indiana Friday night. The Pacers took control of the game with an 8-0 run to close the first quarter, and another 8-0 run early in the second put them up 14. The Nets cut the lead to five midway through the third, but Indiana answered with yet another 8-0 run that put them up double-digits for good. The Nets shot just 36 percent from the field and turned the ball over 16 times. Brook Lopez led them with 25 points and 14 boards, but shot just 8-23 from the field. Devin Harris left in the third quarter after someone stepped on his hand, but returned in the fourth and finished with 18 points. The Pacers' two young big men, Tyler Hansbrough and Roy Hibbert, had career highs, Hansbrough with 21, Hibbert with 20.

Everyone had a bad game, including Lopez who had 25 and 14

by KJV on Dec 11, 2009 9:31 PM EST reply actions

This is one of the worst NBA teams ever, I dont know what Rod Thorn was thinking when he put this team together.

Courtney Lee sucks! All the people that support him..HE IS A ROLE PLAYER.
Josh Boone is so soft and cannot hit a free throw
Twill was a huge bust, we should of got Psycho T!
Brook how are all these centers getting career points on you?
CDR what is going on with you?
Tony Battie bench him
Hassel bench him

Rafer Alston is actually good and actually tries to win, we need Hayes back our actual scorer!

THIS TEAM IS TERRIBLE

by Randy Oreens on Dec 11, 2009 9:33 PM EST reply actions

Agree.

2 things that stood out to me:
-We can’t shoot for ish.

-Boone is good in the lineup defensively but is a black hole in the offense.

-We need Yi. We need his size and shooting ability at the 4.

by JayMS on Dec 11, 2009 9:35 PM EST reply actions

Lopez still couldn’t stop Roy Hibbert. What’s wrong with this team? They can’t even beat a team without their top scorer.

Tyler Hansborough killed this team.

Can this team play like a team? Boone did a good job, but they need more 3 pointers.

The “agree” above is for the first comment posted.

nets 12 assists. pacers 22 assists.

by Pigdaddy3 on Dec 11, 2009 9:38 PM EST reply actions

Maybe this team really needs John Wall. Devin Harris can’t help this team with his assists. Or this team can’t live off Devin Harris’ Assists…Damn it.

Break out this team.

by jarkid on Dec 11, 2009 9:42 PM EST reply actions

We get out rebounded every game. And the top PG’s in the league out up more assists in any given night that our whole roster does.

Out new coach has such a grudge on SWAT that he wount even play him in
"garbage time " when we’re down by 20 . This team has too many chiefs and not enough Indians.

by Dan the Fan on Dec 11, 2009 9:51 PM EST reply actions

This team SUCKS its not even worth talking about … Haris said it THIS TEAM IS RIGHT NOW DIVIDED ! its all the two kidds CDR and TWILL just pack them somewhere and get what u can get for them they are trouble makers and i just cant stand CDR where is he now ? Or he is a good player in a bad team hahahahaha how stupid he is makes me laugh ironicly …. anyway not worth talking about them im tired ,,, good luck to these team … i sold my tickets for this season got half of my money back …. if they win 10 games all nets fans should be happy…. and one more thing Its a shame to trade R.Anderson head to head with C Lee what a bust trade …

by Rob on Dec 11, 2009 10:00 PM EST reply actions

This team is almost unbearable to watch… And that’s coming from a die hard fan.

by Andy on Dec 11, 2009 10:19 PM EST reply actions

Before you start calling others stupid, I’d pick up a sixth grade grammar text… Who said CDR was the one to blame for this team being divided?? Besides Brook and besides tonight, he seems like one of the few consistent players we have left.

by JB on Dec 11, 2009 10:27 PM EST reply actions

Even though the Nets are so bad not even words can describe it, I am still a fan and will always be because I am a fan that sticks with his team in good times and bad times.
Whos fault is it putting this horrible team together, if we kept Carter and Anderson or atleast traded them for some actual players not another point guard, an old center and a role player.
Basically they wanted Cap space for a big free agent that WE ARE NOT GETTING! The knicks are second in cap space and have won their 4th in a row and have a good coach. Their players actually play like they want to win!
We need to make some trades if we want to not be considered a laughing stock on Jimmy Kimmel.
Draft John Wall and trade Harris for a PF then sign free agents!

what happened to devinnnn harris?

by matt on Dec 11, 2009 10:42 PM EST reply actions

Nice work team, keep helping others to win!!!

wow @ lopez 8-23 shooting, calm down kid. you aint shooting guard!!!

still he had some impresive numbers

23 pts, 14 rbds (8)off (6)def, 2 ast, 2 stl, 3 blk

only thing that he didnt did well was that 8-23 shooting.

why cant he get more inside shoots ?

by mr. omG on Dec 11, 2009 10:49 PM EST reply actions

There was a point in the 3rdQ where Mike Fratello and Ian Eagle were talking about team philosopy.
Mike was talking about how the type of players you have dictates your style of play.
Mike also talked about Lopez and him getting the ball down low.
Its seems like Mike Fratello knows what hes talking about.
Maybe a good candidate for coach?
He sees the Nets play….
he coached Brad Daughtery… Maybe get Brad to coach Brook?
Yi needs to get on the floor!

by djheavyduty on Dec 11, 2009 11:01 PM EST reply actions

all of u keep saying WE NEED YI BACK! he is not that good. his defense is horrible and when he does not make shots he gets down on himself

by matt on Dec 11, 2009 11:23 PM EST reply actions

Now that you mentioned CDR……It looks like he has stopped trying….He seems like a Big Baby…Maybe that is why so many teams passed on him…..Maybe Alston’s comments were meant for CDR ?…..It also seems like CLEE is playing bad so that we can trade him back to Orlando or to a contender…Then So be it……It’s WALL Time….

by NetFan48 on Dec 11, 2009 11:28 PM EST reply actions

I don’t mind the NETS losing. It is expected. CDR, just needs to learn how to shoot consistently from the outside.
Lee is a good shooter but the pick to set him up are not effective , he can’t get a clear shot. If we have a better PG, the timing of pass will help. Out PGs are typically drive and draw but it is not working. Defense is better but our turnovers that is killing and it result to transitional play. I am still confident this team will in no time have some cohesiveness once we get Yi, Dooling and Hayes back to the lineup. Battie he is hopeless, too old and lot’s of injuries. Sean Williams too aggressive and too light. CDR doesn’t know spacing and can’t read defense, a lot of times put him in an ackward position. He should just pull up and fade, unfortunately he doesn’t have that move yet.
The only good thing is that these guys are young but it looks like Brooks is the only one improving. Lee should improve later once the right plays are set. Harris, Yi and CDR seems to have their style set already and most likely will not change.

by JuliusIrving on Dec 11, 2009 11:42 PM EST reply actions

I am only posting right now because I am irate! This team is terrible and everyone should be accountable, Thorn messed this up and it’s becoming an absolut disgrace. I think of all the poor decisions and the quality that the Nets put on the floor and my head spins. Unfreakinbelievable!!!! Enough is enough!

by TheBurgerking on Dec 11, 2009 11:43 PM EST reply actions

Noticed that Fratello questioned CDR not getting the ball to be part of the scoring effort and that others were taking many more shots by comparison. You can’t score if you don’t get the ball. Players can’t get into rhythm when they don’t handle the ball enough.

@NetFan48

CDR has proven time and again that he cares about this team and gives all out effort. How can you say that CDR seems like a “Big Baby” when 95% of the time CDR is an effective scorer and defender? Again, players can’t score if they don’t handle the ball enough.

by Jeff on Dec 11, 2009 11:43 PM EST reply actions

@ Jeff……We all seen what CDR can do as far as scoring and taking over the games at the beginning of the season…But now it seems like he doesn’t want to do this or be a key part of this team..He seems to have stopped trying…..Almost as if he is doing this purposely to prove a point to management or specific players ???…I’m not saying that he can’t do it , I just don’t think that he wants to…..There is alot of inner conflict between players..Some heads need to roll…..

by NetFan48 on Dec 11, 2009 11:51 PM EST reply actions

Devin Harris…2 assists for a PG???

by Panareal on Dec 11, 2009 11:51 PM EST reply actions

Hey , season is shot….Hopefully we can get Wall…We will get a new owner and a new Russian coach……Devin Harris is a good player but he will never make other players better…He just doesn’t have it in his game…SO , I say trade him for the rights to Ricky (Pistol) Rubio…..

by NetFan48 on Dec 11, 2009 11:55 PM EST reply actions

The nets biggest problem offensively is that they dont have anyone who can facilitate the offense. In years past they had Kidd running the offense followed by VC who is the kind of guy you can run your offense through.

The nets two best players are turnover prone. Lopez turns it over too often in the post and Harris plays out of control, taking bad shots and turning the ball over.

by mattsimo on Dec 12, 2009 12:29 AM EST reply actions

@NetFan 84 CDR can’t Take over a Game If He’s Being Used as a 5th Option and He’s The SECOND LEADING scorer..Whose “Bright Idea” was It 2 Let EVERYONE BUT CDR get shots? Our “PG” Always Seem 2 Lead the Team In FG attempts and Brook….Brook is…S-O-F-T.. WHO WOULDN’T score like he Does On 24 SHOTS? His Numbers are MISLEADING, He is NEVER a PRESENCE in ANY game..CDR is The BEST FINISHER on This Team. PERIOD..Give Him the Damn Ball

by The GM on Dec 12, 2009 12:40 AM EST reply actions

@NetFan48

I’ve followed CDR’s basketball career since high school. I have never known him to give less than 100% effort and I know how he positively HATES to lose. What point would he be proving by not trying to get a win? CDR is a dedicated athlete and a team player. I feel he’s shown that to everyone all season.

I guess our views of CDR’s play in tonite’s game were radically different: I watched several instances where CDR was just “looked off” by other players rather than being passed the ball to try to score. CDR only took 7 shots. You can’t score without the ball.

by The GM on Dec 12, 2009 12:56 AM EST reply actions

@mattsimo
you are correct sir.
Fact of the matter is that team assists is the most important stat to improve on here. Those assists are almost always indicative of easy baskets. The offense gets stuck in “who’s turn is it to go 1 on 5” mode at times. It is sickening to watch at times.
It could be attributed to a bit of jostling over who is going to be the alpha dog to carry this team- leading to forced shots and holding on to the ball on offense, a lot of dribbling between the legs bs. Most nights I am screaming ‘Just pass the damn ball already!’

by molskin on Dec 12, 2009 1:02 AM EST reply actions

@The GM. Jeuss Christ. How quickly you turn on players. Brook has been scoring well and efficiently lately and in this game he took too many jumpers and it looked like Kiki didn’t telll him to stop. Hibbert did score too much lopez. He’s one of those players that Lopez will learn how to stop, as Hibbert is 7-3. How did CDR do? 2-7? ya the teammates should have given him the ball more. It seems like CDR only scores when he takes a large volume of shots and as his shot selection suggests, he is only really effective on one side of the court. Also he looks like a black hole who doesn’t like to pass. His numbers are not misleading at all in the nets wins he was the dominatn force that kept the nets competive throughout the games. I like CDR And i like Brook but i don’t turn on players after a bad game in a string of good games.

by Sparklespice on Dec 12, 2009 2:54 AM EST reply actions

@Mr. Omg, Brook can’t get inside shots because his teammates choose not to give him the balo when he is posting up or cutting to the basket. This causes him to be frustrated and as a young player he shows his frustration on the court. Instead of continuting to call for the ball inside and being ignored Lopez desides to drift to the perimeter and take lots of jumpers because otherwise he wont get touches. He really wants to help the nets win and be a part of that win, but he is young and frustrated.

by Sparklespice on Dec 12, 2009 2:57 AM EST reply actions

This was very disappointing and a big hint that 0-18 was a hint of a larger problem with this team. We are NOT a team, at least not yet. And frankly, we don’t have the talent or size at some positions. Both of these are leading to a divided locker room, IMO.

There was one point where we had four guards and Lopez out on the floor! That should never happen unless under dire circumstances or when our opponent is similarly matched (which wasn’t the case last night). Boone is an effort player but can’t get it done on O. Our young guys (T-Will, Brook, CDR, Courtney) have some ability, but don’t know how to play the game yet. And we lack a superstar, because Harris is a good player, but not a star. He’s on the level of RJ. I don’t see how this roster with an inexperienced head coach will be able to salvage many wins from this season at this point.

And for the last time, Yi is not going to help this situation. He will only make the bitterness among bigs (particularly SWat) worse. We have larger problems than injuries.

by MrT on Dec 12, 2009 6:44 AM EST reply actions

Just looked at the schedule and the standings, and our next win is likely to come against Minnesota in five games. Toronto is up-and-down but I don’t hink we can match up with them, nor do I think we play well enough as a team. I’m starting to lose faith in seeing any progress this season.

by MrT on Dec 12, 2009 6:51 AM EST reply actions

this team is obviously not built for this year, but is a mix bag of pieces, most of which will be gone in the near future. I just don’t understand why Thorn drafted Twill, when what we really needed was another guy who could bang at the 4 and be a credible threat to score and get some rebounds. Why can’t we get a 4 who is an actual threat. Is there a curse of kmart? Boone is a poor man’s jason collins. he’s got the same skill set, except collins was bigger, defended a lot better, and was a lot smarter. Najera is broken. A mild breeze is enough to knock yi over and injure him severely. swill is just a terrible player.

by PA Net on Dec 12, 2009 9:00 AM EST reply actions

MrT,

I agree with the harris-rj comparison. both wanted to be “the man” on their teams, but neither is good enough to carry a team.

by PA Net on Dec 12, 2009 9:05 AM EST reply actions

Yi is a better defender than Boone. I never thought I’d say that. But there is absolutely no excuse for how many layups this team got last night—WITHOUT A PASS— from the halfcourt line dribbling straight to the rim in the first half. The front line, and this includes Lopez, did not rotate at all. And for as many times as Alston looked over at the bench early in the game while on offense, he needs to keep his guy in front of him on the other end. Trading baskets is a game we cannot win with this offense.

by kg on Dec 12, 2009 11:08 AM EST reply actions

We should involve CDR in the offense more.

Brook seriously needs to improve his D. The kid is having a great season, but he has still ways to go to become an AS, IMO. Some things he must improve are his D, kicking the ball out and finding the open man when he’s double teamed and stop taking some of those outside shots. Not critizing him, I love the kid and he’s growing fast, but he should focus on getting better in those aspects, and he’ll become a better player.

Boone is a limited player on offense, he obviously cant create his own shots and misses some easy baskets, but he still hits nearly .500 of his shots. That’s far better than Collins’ FG. Twin is a 7 footer never reached .430 FG while he was here. Boone’s career FG % is .540+. Other than that, yes, Twin was a smarter defender and his IQ was higher than Boone’s. But even with his limitations, Josh helps this team with his solid D and rebounding ability. Even if he’s limited in the offensive end, he’s not a liability ‘cause he knows his role and doesn’t take shots he shouldnt take, and even though he blows some layups, he makes a fair amount of the shots he takes.

Yi is not an AS and obviously won’t singlehandedly turn our season around, but he’s the 2nd most talented big on this roster, so that will help, as it’ll give us more options, esp offensively.

At least having Yi back should keep Tony Battie glued to the bench, this old bum is utter garbage. He can do nothing.

by Andrés on Dec 12, 2009 12:10 PM EST reply actions

Lets be realistic here…

Harris needs some time to develop in to a real leader, but he also may be one of those guys that just has too many injuries throughout his career to be able to do it. Some guys are born leaders, like Kidd. Other guys, like Harris, need time to work in to leadership… but this guy is so injury prone it may never happen.

VC did so many things for the Nets, and it now is plainly obvious what they were. He made everybody look better, especially Harris.

No matter what coach is brought in here, they need a leader on the floor. Until the Nets have this true leader on the floor, they will not get much better. Somebody has to step up, and get the team to follow.
