Is Brook Lopez an All-Star?

The Nets have had an All-Star every year for a decade. But with a 2-20 record, getting a player on the Cowboys Stadium roster this February won't be easy. Brook Lopez has the best shot. His numbers--19.3, 9.1, 2.2--are considerably better than his two rivals, Shaquille O'Neal and Al Horford, but oh, that record hurts. Still, ESPN's David Thorpe says Lopez is the top soph. Chris Douglas-Roberts is #15.

He better go..

I think the fact that David Lee plays center will prove to be his only obstacle. Their numbers are similar right now, but Lee is winning a little bit more than Lopez is. Not saying he is not going to be an all-star. In fact, if i was a coach, i would vote him in (surprise!!! I am a Nets fan)

by KJV on Dec 10, 2009 6:13 PM EST reply actions

he and him = Lopez

by KJV on Dec 10, 2009 6:14 PM EST reply actions

Hell yes Brook is an allstar
After DHoward Brook is the best center in the East
Yes the Nets record is bad but Brook is the only constant.
If the Brook got 20 shots per game he would be even better
Brook has real offensive skills, not Ewings old moves
Brook is also a victim of bad coaching
Prime example was last night
19 in the first half
2 in the second
If the offense was ran through Brook like LA did with Shaq there would be no question
Brook needs the ball early and often
Brook needs to be more selfiish
Brook needs to call for the ball
DH and needs Brook more than he realizes
KiKi and Thorn must enforce this like they do Yi
Having an allstar center in 2010 is more valuable than a small guard
7footers don’t grow on trees

by DJ HeavyDuty on Dec 10, 2009 6:20 PM EST reply actions

If we can get into double digits by February and are playing respectable ball, sure. As of now, no, because our record is horrible.

But yes, he is an all star. But I can see why he wouldn’t make it if this team doesn’t make strides.

Brook is really good but against Dwight he is awful

by Randy Oreens on Dec 10, 2009 6:42 PM EST reply actions

Ive always thought record should mean absolutely nothing. Its not a single players fault that the rest of the team is injured. Or even playing bad. Yes I think players can force their will on the rest of their teammates but come on.

Not this year since he was injured, but Al Jefferson last year was a complete stud, and did everything he possible could as an individual to make the team better, its not his fault he is on a team of nobodies.

by Tim on Dec 10, 2009 6:54 PM EST reply actions

What about Andrew Bogut?

by TheBurgerking on Dec 10, 2009 6:57 PM EST reply actions

@DJ HeavyDuty

Brook is not nearly as good as you think(although I do think he is better then all but one of the East’s Centers.) He is slow, forces bad shots, and the majority of his shots come from offensive boards. So no, giving him more touches wont work, and it hasn’t worked. He needs to work harder at rebounding, and not just being tall. He had 2 points in the second half, but that does not mean he didn’t touch it! IF he didn’t have so many wide open ally oops from Devin and CDR his FG% would be even more abysmal then it is, and it already is Horrrrible for a 7 footer!

by Tim on Dec 10, 2009 6:59 PM EST reply actions

I like our future. We have the top young center in basketball today. CDR is becoming one of the top wings in the league – and I still think that in a year or two he is going to be a deadly 6th man off the bench and will be the perennial 6th man of the year.

Hope that we get John Wall with the top pick. The rest will fall into place.

Also this would go against the Nets draft history…..but with a 2nd round pick that will be in the top 3 meaning non-guaranteed contract….there is a very good chance that Ohio State does not make the tourney having lost Evan Turner until mid Feb at the earliest – if this happens – its possible that Evan Turner falls into the 2nd round as teams are concerned about this back and the recovery. A young rebuilding team with picks (and a high second round pick meaning non-guaranteed) can take the risk of drafting Turner in the 2nd round. If we added him to John Wall and a solid 2nd selection in the 1st round – this team is looking very very good for the future….Its a long shot at the moment, but remember how CDR and Blair both fell in prior drafts – as teams are fearful of drafting guys with injuries or prefer to take foreign players they can stash overseas to avoid the cap hit.

by Ryan243 on Dec 10, 2009 7:01 PM EST reply actions

absolutely not, and lee isn’t winning “a little bit more.”

Lee’s team has won 3 straight games and has beaten Brook’s team twice, and Brook’s team set the record for worst start ever and his 2-20.

by mills on Dec 10, 2009 7:28 PM EST reply actions

@ Tim. He forces bad shots most of the time because his teammates decided to give him the ball for a post up with 5 seconds left. The majority of his shots do not actually came from offensive boards. Lately he has been effective at scoring or drawing fouls on his posts up (although work needs to be done), and he is great at out manuvering his opponents to get open, but its up to his teammates to recognzie him. And his increased touches from last season, (i want him taking 15 shots a game) have resulted in fantastic success recently with the return of the players who can actually pass the ball to him in effective spot. His FG% was bad because for a long time he was the only option for a team and as the opponents number focus he was forced to take a lot of bad shots, because his bad shots had a better shot of falling then the scrubs that started along side him. His field goal percentage has improved drastically since being the only option.

by Sparklespice on Dec 10, 2009 7:31 PM EST reply actions

@ ryan
don’t forget we also have Dallas first pick, and we can use that on turner as well, IMO he’s the most complete college player… The nets might use Dallas for a big man however..

by AC24 on Dec 10, 2009 7:37 PM EST reply actions

@Sparklespice
It’s not true that they give him the ball to post up with 5 secs left. Brook was just forcing bad shots this year period. When he was double teamed he would try to simply get the ball up on the rim b4 he got stripped. He has a hard time in double coverage and really giving him more touches would have a bad effect seeing as how he is easily stripped. Some of that had to do with players being out but some of it also came from Brook making bad decisions because he wanted to show he could handle double teams. If Brook asserts himself more his FG% will rise, but he still seems to get pushed around pretty easily in the paint even though he’s avg 9 rebs, he looks like he could get even more.

by TheMann on Dec 10, 2009 7:49 PM EST reply actions

Numbers- yes
name- no

the all star game is a joke. None of it matters. I mean it makes them look good but anyone who actually knows the NBA know that brook is borderline all star and will without a doubt be an “all star”. The casual fans can continue voting for t-mac and a.i.

by MoMo on Dec 10, 2009 8:03 PM EST reply actions

@AC24 – I think that if Turner does not come back before the end of Feb, there is a very good chance that Ohio State misses the tourney. And teams will then be very worried about his back, regardless of workouts. Its definitely and outside chance, but it is possible he falls into the 2nd round – where he would be a steal.

I think that 2nd first round pick (the Dallas pick) has to be used to get some size. A backup center or another PF is probably what we need to do with that pick. A Solomon Alabi, Cole Aldrich, PF who drops, etc. Again though – even though Dallas got off to a big start, the West is so deep – its conceivable that they do not make the playoffs and that becomes a 2nd lottery pick which would be HUGE.

Can’t the coaches pick David Lee as a PF?
If East coaches want to win game, they would want either Lopez or Bogut and have Lee at PF.

As I recall, Al Jefferson missed out last year only because Shaq had good numbers too and Shaq was a sentimental favorite.
There was lots of support for Jefferson.

Maybe I see something different. Brook is the 1st Big man down court.
I’ve seen the the Nets iso Lopez at the 3 point line, he drove to the basket, turn, and fade away. Swish.
DHoward can’t shoot a 15 footer.
All I’m saying is if you have a borderline “great” center… Act like it!

by DJ HeavyDuty on Dec 10, 2009 8:47 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, 2000 was the last year the Nets were not represented at the All-Star Game. For those wondering who has over the decade:

2001: Marbury Rookie/Sophomore Game: Martin/Jackson
2002: Kidd Rookie/Sophomore Game: Martin
2003: Kidd Rookie/Sophomore Game: Jefferson
2004: Kidd & Martin
2005: VC
2006: VC Rookie/Sophomore Game: Krstic
2007: VC & Kidd (Did not Play) Rookie/Sophomore Game: M. Williams
2008: Kidd Rookie/Sophomore Game: SWAT
2009: Harris Rookie/Sophomore Game: Lopez

This season could be 1st in a LONG time that we don’t see a Net in the All-Star game. Outside of the Lakers, San Antonio & Dallas we’re the only team to be represented every year for this decade.

4. Brook Lopez, New Jersey Nets
I thought Lopez, 21, got jobbed in the rookie of the year vote last season, and now we’re seeing why. Although the Nets have been awful, Lopez has been fantastic. He’s averaging 19 points and nine boards a night while ranking third in the NBA with 2.2 blocks per game.

Other than the fact that he shoots too many long jumpers instead of overpowering opposing big men on the blocks, it’s hard to quibble with his offensive attack. Most impressive is the fact that he’s more than doubled his free throw attempts from his rookie season, taking six a game. He’s also one of the most accurate big men from the stripe, at 83.3 percent.

1.Dwight Howard
2.Andrew Bynum
3.Al Jefferson
4.Brook Lopez
5.Marc Gasol
6.Al Horford
7.Joakim Noah
8.Kendrick Perkins
9.Andrew Bogut
10.Greg Oden
11.Marreese Speights
12.Jason Thompson

Brooks biggest problem, BY FAR, is his athleticism. That is one area I feel like he can at least improve though. If he only had his brothers athleticism, omg. He just has this long, gawky, awkward body that is slow and clumsy in the lane. So its very difficult for him to be able to beat guys in the post, so because of that he shots a ton of his shots with a man defending him very well, thus the poor shot%. I feel like even though his % is bad, he still makes a jaw dropping amount of “how did he make that” type of shots, which probably means he has been playing like that(slow) his whole life… which would discredit my belief and hope that he can get more athletic.

Again though, I still love him…

by Tim on Dec 10, 2009 10:02 PM EST reply actions

I think Brook is probably the third or fourth best center in the east right now.

1. D.Howard
2. A.Horford
3. A.Bogut
4. B.Lopez
5. Joakim Noah

Brook has not shown enough when he goes head to head against the other top guys to be able to say that he is second best in the east. His matchups against Dwight have been particularly awful. He is improving all the time though. He needs to get stronger and gain confidence that he can bang with the elite.

by Chris2 on Dec 10, 2009 10:12 PM EST reply actions

He must improve his defense, his opponent center’s number is not bad, either.

And he was soft against Dwight Howard, he has to post up more, and not attempt the jumpers. I don’t know, maybe Frank told him to do so.

by jarkid on Dec 10, 2009 10:16 PM EST reply actions

@Tim

Lopez is the best jump shooting center in this league. Also, if he forced so many bad shots wouldn’t his FG% be lower then it actually is?

The one thing Brook has to work on is getting better low post position. He too often gets pushed out of the low block which leads him to take jump shots. I don’t mind them, since he makes them, but for him to be a true force he has to dominate inside.

by Nets in 2010 on Dec 10, 2009 10:23 PM EST reply actions

im dominican like horford but no way i can deny Lopez is the 2nd, after Howard, best Center in the east.

his numbers have increased, he is our best shoot so far. He tops harris in every acomplished task.

Right now i feel he is our undeniable leader, CDR, Lee and Harris goes 2nd after him.

We need to build around him, like Orlando builded around Howard….

in any case. This is a very young team, they need time to develop. But they also need a proven man to help them With the Defense, Offense and the Leadership role.

We are missing some pieces but cmon, no team is perfect in all 5 positions.

  • still i sugest that we need a proven PF, sorry but i just give up on yi, and a PF backcourt.
  • we need a real defensive player, if not 2, like pietrus, shane battier, etc.
  • we really need to get rid of Najera, Battie, Boone, Yi, Simmons, SWat, Twill and Hassell.
  • Get a more decent bench after we drop off all those guys i just mentioned.
  • as for Twill, if he really doesnt want to be here. Trade him or waive him. No way ill have someone around when that someone doesnt wanna be with me!!!
  • As far as i can see we will be #1 in the Draft, this john wall looks promising. Have him in the radar please.

Sigh :D :D :D

by mr. omG on Dec 10, 2009 10:26 PM EST reply actions

@ Jarkid I think it was frank who had Lopez shoot the all those jumpers because at that point he was probably the best shooter on the team. It kinda destroyed his FG%, and now with the return of his teammates he is taken less long range shots.

The way the internet is controlled by Us People, we could launch a Viral word of mouth strike for people not to pay for internet access – which should be free (paid for by Ads)

However, I don’t think I’m missing much anyway, when ESPN is wrong so often – like when Marc Stein and his colleague recently suggest that Proky may not take over Nets until April or later!
Now we are hearing it could be in weeks.

Forget if Lopez was our center for the finals, what if we never made that stupid Mutombo trade, which did seem stupid at the time too.

We should have won game 6 against the Spurs, and one game? Man… oh man oh man. Worst thing Rod Thorn had done, possibly until the VC trade (we’ll see where Ryan Andersen vs. Courtney Lee ends up in a few years).

by Paul B on Dec 10, 2009 11:53 PM EST reply actions

If you are building a team for the future, what current centers would you rather have than Brook? Howard is the only one on my list. We have a 21 year old stud with all the skills who just needs more game experience and physical size – both of which will come with time. We are very lucky to have Brook and can only hope we lock him up for his career.

Dude u must be watching some other guy..

- yea his athleticism isn’t great but it’s better than most say…
- he wouldn’t look as bad when the doubles come if he had teammates that can knock down open shots.
- he would be averaging more boards if he had some help boxing out opponents (small ball was the problem)

The point is Brook is already the third best center in the league (IMO behind Howard and Bynum) and could be better if he wasn’t a victim of so many flaws of the players and coaches around him.

by JayMS on Dec 11, 2009 3:20 AM EST reply actions

@ Ryan

If Evan Turner is there in the 2nd rd, we all should be doing backflips. Getting him even with the Mavs pick looks unrealistic to me. If it weren’t for that injury, this kid would be top 5 material, possibly top 3.

The Mavs pick and our 2nd rounder (which will be #31/32) give us lots of interesting options. We should use one of them to get a PG and try to get a defensive big w/ the other one. A PG I’d keep an eye on is Greivis Vasquez, from Maryland. As for big men, DeMarcus Cousins or Jarvis Varnado could be options.

Derrick Favors would be great w/ our lotto pick. Then we could sign someone like Rudy Gay:

C Lopez/ Boone
PF Favors/ Yi/ Cousins
SF Gay/ TWill/ Hayes
SG CDR/ Lee
PG Harris/ Dooling/ Vasquez

If we end up with #1 pick and get Wall, then forget Gay and sign an established PF (Stoudemire or Boozer could be options):

C Lopez/ Boone
PF FA/ Yi/ Cousins
SF CDR/ TWill/ Hayes
SG Wall/ Lee
PG Harris/ Dooling/ Vasquez

@Andres & Ryan243 Says:

Fellas start getting more focus with your draft scenarios.
It is very Simple.
2010 NETS NEEDS
Starting PF
Backup Center
Rotation Small Forward
PF/G.Monroe or D.Favors
We need to trade our Dallas pick and 2nd round pick to move up to get one of them.
SF/W.Johnson
By the time the NCAA Tourney is over everybody will realize how talented and high character guy he is.
We need to trade off our one and two in 2011 to get a high pick this year.
C/C.Aldrich
Will be a solid back up to Lopez and also will be able to move over to PF when needed.
We must use our pick on him because after this year when we will be picking in the late round of the first round. We won’t get that opportunity to get a solid big whom can rebound and run the floor with the second unit.
PF/D.Favors
Get rid of J.Boone and maybe Yi before the draft and move up to get another high pick to grab him.
After this year we don’t need draft picks because the team is young and it would be just a waist growing with the guy in the future.

Derrick Rose doesn’t deserve to be there over Rondo. Chicago sucks, Rose’s play has slipped since last year (though he’s warming up), but Rondo is still head and shoulder the best/most consistent PG in the East on the best team in the East.

Also, I’m not sure Granger makes it, given he is out a month. Josh Smith is a lock IMO… the Hawks are legit.

Don’t be surprised if Jennings makes it if he keeps his stats up and Milwuakee is in the playoffs around February.

by Jack Handy on Dec 11, 2009 12:27 PM EST reply actions

@ “Fellas start getting more focus with your draft scenarios.”…

If we are lucky enough to draft John Wall, I think we make a move get Rudy Gay through a S&T and send Devin Harris to Memphis.

I know some of us think that Harris can and will thrive next to John Wall, but to me it seems both players need the ball in their hand to be at their best.

From there, a PF like Gani Lawal with our second pick and/or even a mediocre signing like Amir Johnson and possibly big Dexter Pittman in the second round makes us a young and competitive enough team for me.

by Dirt on Dec 11, 2009 1:27 PM EST reply actions

@tvtechwonV Your logic is flawed. The other centers Brook is competing with for back up center at the all star game are ANdrew Bout and AL horford. Their respective teams are most certaintly not giving those guys 25 shots a game. Also name another young center who is force fed that many shots. Bynum? no. Marc gasol? no. Lopez leads all centers in points and he has been scoring effectively as of late. Im thinking more of a Pau Gasol type player for Lopez, with a few tweaks.
