The Constant

Brook Lopez is the Nets' youngest player and the one with the longest streak of consecutive games played--89. He is also the team's constant right now, a player who despite his youth can be counted on. He proved it Saturday against the Celtics by recovering from a bad stretch in the third quarter and carrying the team on his back the rest of the way. He's also rapidly moving into the top rank of NBA centers.

I don’t think that it should come as any surprise. Honestly I think he’s a top 3 center with yao out.

great he is now jinxed and is gonna get injured vs sixers. if he gets injured r season is overrrrr

If he is a Top 3 center its only because there is a lack of solid Centers in the league. His numbers were solid against the Celtics mostly because he was knocking down the outside jumper all night. A shot the Celtics were begging him to take. I want to see improvement with actual low post moves where he can become a player that when we throw the ball down low to we know something, either a basket or a foul, will come of it almost every time. Hes not there yet.

Yea, he still has a ways to go in his development. He has to get physically stronger, particularly in the lower body. He needs to improve on his post moves and become a better passer. People who say he has peaked are wrong, he can get much better over time.

Brook is definetly a top 10 center
Could be top 5 by season end
Too many turnovers but he draws an instant double team!
That’s great progress
18ft jumper, post moves,and dribble drive!
DHoward cant shoot, Yao can’t drive.
Brook will be 2nd to DH in popularity
But it will be a battle

if we get John Wall, he should be our franchise player if we don’t get LeBron.
by jarkid on Nov 9, 2009 11:07 PM EST reply actions
if we get the #1 pick i think without a doubt it would have to be john wall. ive seen his highlights and he’s nasty. Gotta see how he does in college though. That would make devin harris expendable…
lopez shot was on fire saturday…that was fun to watch.

@djheavyduty
If you think Brook can drive, you must haven’t watched the Nets over the past 2 years. They don’t call him “Slopez” for a reason.
Oh, and another thing Dwight and Yao do that Brook doesn’t… rebound.
Dont get me wrong I love Brook, but lets not get carried away.

Well I think Brook can become a great center, he just need some time and someone to teach him. Remember he is only 21, and his 2nd year. We still remember how bad Yao and Dwight was their first few years. Yao was slow, and couldn’t really defend, always in foul trouble. Dwight had no offensive game at all, and his defense wasn’t like what it is today.
If Brook continues to improve, he can be great like them too. I think he should add like a baby hook shot that yao always do to his arsenal, and learn to rebound like dwight. If he does those two I think he should have a pretty good career.
by LetsGoNets on Nov 10, 2009 12:26 AM EST reply actions
Brook is gonna have a excellent career. Honestly he should of been pick 2nd or 3rd in the draft we got real lucky with him.
@LetsGoNets
I completely agree I think a couple people forgot that Brook is only 21 in his 2nd year of the NBA game. This early in his career and he is already trying to carry this team on his back with no real help in Harris etc. He is responding real well so far in my opinion and should only improve with time.

@tim
Lopez could drive, and he did fews in his career, especially in 2nd year.

Brook is the first big man down the court and yes he does take his man off the dribble.check youtube holmes

Lopez will be very good, maybe a great Center. Let’s not come down on him and say he isn’t rebounding or is slow. Sometimes, being more comfortable out on the floor gives a player the reins to be more assertive, to act and react quicker, thereby translating to better speed during game situations. He is clearly the guy right now. When D. Harris and the rest of the team finally gets healthy, I think you’ll see his numbers improve even more, as he won’t get doubled as much, or will have options (players) to pass to when he does.
mikee21 said it best – we got really lucky with him when we got him at #10 last year.

big men tak longer to settle and get this bodies tuned right. At 21 lopez is ahead of the curve. If he keeps improving solidly over then next 2 or 3 years who know how good he will be?
by Scott on Nov 10, 2009 8:11 AM EST reply actions
His only good game of the season without Devin feeding him the ball literally in the basket was the last game. He needs to show me more before I go saying he is a top 5 center.
Like I said, with exception of last game, he has done literally nothing. He ’try’s’ to spin around and drive, but the defense just holds ground and he winds up taking a forced shot. Its so frustrating to watch, because he is so long so he needs to plant himself under the basket. He is not Olajuwon! Brook needs to know his role! This also really displays what Devin brings to the table. They cant double Brook on the pick and rolls so he just rolls for the easy dunk. I missed one game, but so far in every game that I have seen, I have yet to see one single ally oop to him off the pick and roll with Alston, or whomever it is. When Harris was in the game he had 2 or 3 if I remember correctly. Brook is a 1 – 2 punch. Hopefully he can improve and get faster, like his brother. If he had the speed of Robin with all Brooks skills… omg.

It is very easy to look bad, playing for a bad team. You end up trying to hard and covering for others mistakes. Lopez has been a very pleasant surprise. Has talent, smarts and is always on the court. Can’t ask for more right now.

Not sure that anyone can make an argument for a better young center (3 yrs or less in the league). The kid is 21. We got super lucky getting him in the draft.
Look at the starting lineups he has played with much of this season – every team is game planning for Lopez and he continues to develop and put up big numbers. I have always felt that this season would be a success because of the development of the young guys. Each guy is going to get heavy minutes and in a variety of rotations – which will pay dividends down the line.

I agree with Lopez being a pleasant surprise, but I don’t agree with you saying that its easy to look bad on a bad team. I think its the other way around. Kevin Martin, Durant, etc. Stephen Jackson had 15 assists last night.
Brook looks better on this team. He gets minutes when blown out, plays against second string centers, its a huge boost to his game.
by tim on Nov 10, 2009 11:39 AM EST reply actions
I think in a way, it is easy for Brook’s defense and rebounding to look worse on a bad team. He has absolutely no help with rebounding, or other big bodies that take up space and make it easier to rebound.
Defensively, our perimeter D has always been an issue, which leads to guards attacking the rim, and of course again he’s next to one of the worst defensive PFs in the game.

I know it’s only one game, 40 minutes a game is not a good thing. I hope it is not a trend. I’d rather struggle than wear out our best asset during a lost season.

Look Lopez is a great imporvement for us. Can I say two words? “Jason Collins” ok thank you arguement over. You can’t expect a 2nd year player in lopez to put up star quality #’s back to back nights its very difficult especially for somebody in his situation. Half your team is injured, WINLESS, No stars besides yourself, Constantly double teamed EVERYPLAY because the lack of offensive help around you, So yes please stop complaining about Lopez and be grateful that we have him. TWO WORDS “10th pick”!
by mikee21 on Nov 10, 2009 1:46 PM EST reply actions
I disagree with alot of things Tim has said. I think Lopez had a fine game against philly where he made some bad choices but for the most part he was good. Off the pick and roll he gets good position under the basekt. He is a fantastic finisher around the rim and usually devin harris is there to feed him the ball. WIth devin harris out i sstill see lopez get good position his teamates just arent giving him the ball in that spot where he is super effective. He is 21 years old, already has a decent shooting touch, is a great finisher under the basket, and has a good foundation defensively. He still has to work on his postup game because he is a tad bit slow, but i think he has shown improvement on managing double teams already. Also kevin durant struggled in his first year as the focal point on offense. For brook this is his first year as a focal point and i think its only natural that 21 year old would at times struggle with this new role. However, I think as the season goes on Brook will continue to learn and to thrive. did i mention hes 21 year old?
