Messina Calls Prokhorov a "Genius", Dismisses NBA Interest

Ettore Messina coached Mikhail Prokhorov's CSKA Moscow to two European titles. Now with Real Madrid, Messina calls his old boss "a business genius with a sixth sense of when to buy and sell, an expert in the interpersonal relations" who leaves key decisions to those he hires. Will Messina follow Prokhorov to the NBA? "Very difficult", he says. The system is "not open" to a European becoming a head coach.

Sounds like a true politician. (“He’s not interested”) Yeah, right…

Prohkorov wasn’t interested in buying the Nets either

ni,
The most famous [blunder] is “never get involved in a land war in Asia” – but only slightly less well-known is this: “Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line”! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha… [drops dead]

He didn’t say he is not interested. He said it is difficult for a Euro coach to adapt right-away and take NBA head-coaching job.

Who wouldn’t want to come to the utopia that is the New Jersey Nets?!?!

I wonder if the Nets could be coached by computer. Feed in all the pertinent data and let the computer decide on moves. Sort of like Robbie the Robot. All you would need is a good program and a competent data entry clerk. Worth a try maybe?

Of course if we get the computer we would have to trade Sean Williams. Wouldn’t want SWAT trashing the “coach”.

My only minor concern with Prokhorov is the NBA is different than the Euro league. Rules, regs, conduct, scouting, etc. here in the US are handled differently than in the Europe. What works well in the internationally doesn’t always translate in the NBA especially in coaching and personnel. The Euro league and the NBA have completely different systems of play (even though the NBA has adopted some of the international aspects).

And, Mike, a computer on the court is another surface to slap advertising on! Yormark will love it!

Trenton – clearly 1 billionaire thought this utopia was worth investing in

as long as he gives us at least 1 title i wont complain about him!
Prohhorov please get David Lee and Dwayne Wade in 2010 man!!!
And Lebron if he gets to see Wade and Lee he’ll take cents only to come here and win.

If LBJ is not available, we need two good players and a bench to compete. I don’t see DWade is going anywhere. I don’t think two superstars like LBJ and Wade want to be in the same team. One has to be the sidekick and if Wade is with LBJ, he will be the sidekick, who BTW already has a ring. How about JJohnson and Bosh? T-Will can play the 3 sufficiently as long as he doesn’t need to score. There is enough defense and offense in that group.
Don’t forget that we’ve two draft picks and one could (will) be a very high one.

PA Net,
I love that film! An all-time sleeper hit.
“Inconceivable!” (as he pushes his tongue through his teeth)

@ Mike – we’ll probably wind up doing that at some point anyway, so I say let’s give the computer idea a try.

@ Mike – I meant if the league office approves of it.

If you’re going to bring in a European coach, I think David Blatt would be a better option. He was actually born in NJ anyway, so any language barrier would not be a problem. Pluse, he has a very impressive CV winning the Euroleague and the European Championships with Russia. That’s just if you go there. Personally, I hope they keep Frank, but a new owner may very well decide to clean house without looking at the history of the team.

If a new owner looks at Frank’s history with this team, he actually should let him walk without thinking twice.
Frank has done nothing special to be here for more than 7 years, this is ridiculous.
by Andrés on Nov 10, 2009 3:45 AM EST reply actions
@Andres Says:
Your wrong about L.Frank not doing anything special over his seven years. He manage to rip the team off for a crazy salary of $4.5million dollars a year OUCH! We have to eat it one more year and that will be the end of it. Kareem Abdul Jabbar is the answer as the future head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.
by Dziedzic on Nov 10, 2009 7:58 AM EST reply actions
@Dziedzic:
Not Jabbar. It was announced today that he has been treating for a rare form of Leukemia.
Frank is in his last year for sure.
The new owner has to make some decision, and since everyone says to keep Thorn until he retires, it must be the coach who goes. Besides, Thorn is the only one who can pull off the necessary player moves during the next 9 months.
Avery Johnson should at least be interviewed. I can see BLopez liking him and Avery might challenge DH to actually play like an Allstar.
