Nets' Lost Season Continues with Loss of Game...and Courtney Lee

Brook Lopez's best game since the season opener--and Trenton Hassell's best game in years--weren't quite enough to help the Nets avoid the worst start in franchise history Friday. The 76ers rode Louis Williams and a hot-shooting fourth quarter to beat New Jersey in a Philly heart-breaker. Up eight early in the fourth, the Nets couldn't close the deal. After Hassell missed two free throws, Andre Iguodala put the Sixers up by three with 11.6 left by making one of his. The Nets couldn't get off a clean shot as Andre Iguodala stripped the ball from Terrence Williams just before the buzzer sounded. Lopez finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks while Hassell also had a double-double, with 17 and 12. It was his first start of the season after playing only eight minutes in the previous five games combined. Courtney Lee left the game in the third with a left groin injury. The Nets are now 0-6, the only winless team in the NBA. For the Sixers, Lou Williams finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and six rebounds.

Anyone still making mind-boggling excuses for Frank, take a second or third or fourth look at the end of the Sixers game.

This is really funny, Lawrence Frank spoiled this season, we could have a surprising season if we can all play really well. But now with 0-6 to start the season, it’s really pathetic to care about this team.

I really do not like Frank…but right now I don’t think any coach would be able to help us. Almost half our team is hurt…we have one remaining starter playing right now…what do you expect? It wasn’t a lack of effort. Just very disappointed right now.
PS…sixers are pretty bad, def would of beat them if we were healthy

Yay!!! We did it!! Worst start in franchise history!
To make things worst, we got another player added to the injury list. As how things are going now, we will probably lose a player every game.
Once again, we couldn’t hold on to the lead that we had in the 4th and lost. But I like to give credits to the players that played well, especially Hassel. I thought Brook could’ve gotten more touches as well.
We will probably be 0-7 after tomorrows game. But oh well…. #1 pick here we come!

By the way, is Alston our best PG right now? I would say no. TWill is, as evidenced by their play tonight. I don’t know why Alston refused to pass the ball to the best player on the floor today. He just would not even look at Lopez on screen and rolls.
At the end of the game, he showed all of us that he would rather turn the ball over rather than passing it to Brook

Anyone who blames this game on Frank is crazy. The Nets’ active roster right now is Alston, Hassell, T-Will, Najera, Boone, Lopez, and Sean Williams.
A roster with those players shouldn’t be in any game, yet these guys played their hearts out tonight and gave 110%. I’m just so angry the Nets don’t get any help. A layup that would go in for any other team rims out for the Nets, and the refs are ripping off the Nets completely. We can’t get any help at all.
by canofan42 on Nov 6, 2009 9:55 PM EST reply actions
I hope LFrank realizes that Alston is a crub and that TWill should be our starting PG until Harris comes back

LETS ALL CLAP FOR FRANK….
What a unthought of terrible pathetic play he set up to ONCE again cost us the game.
Whats the excuse this time blame it on Brickly Lee’s injury?
Frank you cannot coach a team that has no starts you are awful you are the worst exuse of a coach ive ever seen.
You once again lost us a game and got out coached by a team we didnt lose to last year.
Lawrence Frank I hope next year when you dont have a job you can watch some of the games you coached and just look at yourself in embrassment.
0-82
I dont know why I bother watching the sixers games anymore just to see us lose because of your terrible coaching. YOU ARE TERRIBLE
by Randy Oreens on Nov 6, 2009 9:57 PM EST reply actions
Anyone who blames the refs and gravity for this loss is crazy. The Nets’ active roster right now has Brook in it. And at the end of the game, the Greatest coach in Nets’ history couldn’t draw a play where Lopez would at least touch the ball.
We can’t get any help at all.
by KJV on Nov 6, 2009 10:00 PM EST reply actions
The 76ers are an awful team, and I am surprised to propose that part of their problem is poor coaching. I thought Eddie Jordon was a good coach when he was with the NETS. The 76ers offense is confusing and they don’t defend very well. I thought we might win one of these two games against them. Maybe our home court will help us beat this team that is really not much better than us at this stage. Maybe THEY eat something at the IZOD and get food poisoning? Wanna know how bad the 76ers defense was? Look at Trenton’s stat line! This is the third game so far that we could/should have won. We should be 3-3 with a little luck, a few extra buckets and a plan to try and protect the rim. Some of this is all the injuries, but some of it is coaching. First thing I DO, when they make ME HEAD COACH, is get a full time shooting coach and require many more hours of shooting practice for everybody. BUT in the end, we played three guys big minutes who really should be on the bench in lime green size 52 slim and long suits. We just don’t have enough talent on the floor right now. Maybe we steal one from the 76ers Saturday, I don’t think I can cope with 0-15, not that 3-12 is going to make me feel that much better. At least we have Brook, I just hope he can learn something from these losses.

And the refs… wtf? we can’t get any calls from them…. and @ everybody else… i blame almost everyhting on L Frank, but tonight you cant blame him, look at the players he had to roll with, i mean come on what do u expect? I’m just not happy when he doesnt get the players to play hard but that was definitely not the case tonight

Kudos to The Capitol. He’s a great pro I’m glad to have on this team. But I still think TWill ahould have got the start, he’s our future.
Btw, why did Frank forget about Boone in the 2nd half? He was doing great…
by Andrés on Nov 6, 2009 10:10 PM EST reply actions
So realistically, what are our options should Frank be fired during this season? Are we just stuck with Barisse?
by NateDD on Nov 6, 2009 10:12 PM EST reply actions
I noticed Lopez can only consistently score off pick and rolls, and probably only with Harris. Maybe thats why he’s constantly setting picks, but no one can pass it to him. Also, it seems so hard for him to post up effectively…and he is still developing his one on one play. Just sayin’.
What’s up with Lee though; he can’t shoot a jump shot off the dribble! I’m concerned that he is only going to be a great ROLE player.
by jbulz on Nov 6, 2009 10:16 PM EST reply actions
Where are all those people saying how “alston took a team to the finals last year?”
I the last person I have ever seen airball 2 shots in a game… OPEN shots… was probably lebron, and no one else.
Maybe Boone shooting free throws.
But in all seriousness(actually that was serious) Alston is terrible, Brook looks better, isn’t forcing shots nearly as much and actually got some boards, and it was great to have a vet in Trenton Hassell back. When you only have 1 of your 5 starters left, its kind of hard to blame anyone in particular. The only thing you can say against Frank is that he played Alston, but he was forced into that situation.
by tim on Nov 6, 2009 10:17 PM EST reply actions
I’m usually staunch defender of Frank; but he waited too long to bring in Najera when the team had the lead.
@ tim
I think Alston did his job, he was not spectacular but he was not “terrible.” Yes, he did botch the pass to Najera though. He is a pass first point guard—but there were really not a lot of players to pass to.

The guys played hard, we are getting snakebit with all these injuries. Trenton is a class act,a true professional. To not play all season and then play so well is impressive. But the team we are fielding is probably the least talented in the entire NBA. Lee looks really good to me, if he could ever start to hit his shots he will win a lot of people over. I think he is just adjusting to the increased responsibility and he is seeing so much less space than he saw in Orlando. The difference is so big this is like another rookie year for him. I think its just a matter of time he improves, but how long will he be sidelined with the groin injury? I was hoping we would be competitive this year, 30 wins or so, and I still think if we were fully healthy we would have that potential over a full season. But if an awful season is in the cards, so be it. Hopefully we save some real good moments for the last third of the season so we have something to build on next year and a positive narrative to pitch to free agents. And hopefully a top 3 draft pick.

DONT PANIC, THINGS WILL GET BETTER! Nets faithful, the only place to go from here is UP. they will NOT go 0-82, and at the least, they will develop another star in terrence williams. I do not think that CDR will ever be as good as he could be, unless he puts on like 25 pounds. Also, I feel like courtney lee is just throwing this season until he gets traded again. he is a whiney punk that was given a big head by his playoff performance. prove us right, son

I don"t know what Eddie was thinking going to coach that sixer team. Brand minus is athleticism of old is an undersized bruiser and nothing more now. Not to mention they tied him up for 5 years. Samuel Dalembert running the Princeton offense? That could end up on comedy central. Louis Williams seems to have trouble running offensive plays too. He is much more of a scorer/free-lancer. There isn’t one starter on this team that would benefit in the Princeton offense.
Eddie should have waited a year and he would have had a good young center to run it in Lopez.

This game was actually fun to watch. They played as well as they could, but just don’t have enough talent. Hassel and Najera were fantastic and the d seems better with them than with CDR and Yi. They do not have a go to guy and just could not stop Williams and Igloo. But I thought they showed heart and the coach did and is doing a great job. Absolutely no complaints and anyone that wants to nit pick is crazy: this is as good as this team gets.

Frank’s putrid small ball philosophy is pathetic. It’s disgusting to see Simmons out there at the 4. DISGUSTING!
Opie needs to start Boone, who looked great next 2 Brook. He should have been given more PT in the 2nd half. Najera had some good minutes in the 3rd, but that’s it. And why did Eddie take the last shot? Come on!

Typical Frank’s team. Leading along the way but lose at crunch time. He knows all the x’s and o’s but someone has to light fires on these players butt if you know what I mean. And to do that the coach has to have the street cred. Unfortunately Frank cannot do that ’cause he did not even play in college.
by Edd on Nov 7, 2009 7:38 AM EST reply actions
Hey, for the vast majority of this game this under strength team performed very very well. It should have been a blow out and we competed to the last. Its not just the quality of the bench players that is a challenge (all of whom did fantatis work), but the foul trouble key players get in that is going to be a major factor. However, ultimatly players miss shots not the coach.
Well played everyone. Tough loss.
by Scott on Nov 7, 2009 7:39 AM EST reply actions
No doubt, Frank will be the best, loyal coach to NETS management. He tried to instruct the team to play for lost intentionally in order to get No. 1 draft in 2010.
Unfortunately, nobody will respect a team in sport, who purposely play for lost!
by fplc on Nov 7, 2009 7:49 AM EST reply actions
I wonder if all the cost cutting they did has anything to do with this. Could they have cut back on medical and training to the point where this is the result? I think the sooner they get a new coach the better. The young players need someone to mentor them and instill some pride, passion and confidence. I don’t think LF can come anywhere near that.
by OPutney on Nov 7, 2009 9:50 AM EST reply actions
This under talented, under sized, under experienced team did a great job last night. They are extremely motivated, hungry and well prepared. They are well coached. The problem here is talent, talent, talent. 1 starter is playing (that’s 80% of the team missing!) and 3 significant role players are hurt. It’s a tribute to their professionalism and the coach that they competed that well last night. Igu misses the 3 and we have a win. Williams misses a shot, who knows. Alston is doing his best, but he is not a great defender and not a great distributor. T-Will is doing his best, but he takes crazy shots sometimes. Simmons at the 4 is the only option at times. Boone is inconsistent. Simmons is tougher at times. This all is okay, b/c the team is fighting and so when talent returns they will be okay – not great, but at least decent
by joe on Nov 7, 2009 10:31 AM EST reply actions
Great game by Mr Hassell. The guy most on this board wanted to ban from the team can still be more effective than any of the young wings.
The sad thing is that this game was actually lost at the free throw line.
Enjoyed the write up by SLAM. The Sixers really look bad. Stephanski has taken a promising young team and flushed it down the toilet. Sound familiar? Agree with above post that EJ should have waited. What is with the use of the bunny theme with the Sixers mascot/boosters and the empty arena? Yormark looks like a genius in comparison.

“Simmons at the 4 is the only option at times. Boone is inconsistent. Simmons is tougher at times.”
Hilarious. If Boone is inconsistent, then I don’t know what I can say about Bobby “I can’t hit 20% of muy shots” Simmons. Stop defending Frank for using that bum at the 4, it’s pathetic.
Josh is actually playing pretty solid. He deserves more PT. And he deserves to start.
Simmons on the other hand is a bum who is given PT only because Frank wants his vets to be happy. He has done nothing to be part of hte rotation, period.
Can’t wait til next summer to say bye bye to Opie and Simmons. Next summer can’t come soone enough.
by Andrés on Nov 7, 2009 10:59 AM EST reply actions
Hassell is a professional. I don’t mind Hassel getting some PT, just leave Bobby Simmons out of it. When a guy goes down, Trenton should get minutes. Simmons is a bum.
Has anyone noticed how AWESOME Lopez and Boone are when they play at the same time?
The team played their hearts out last night. I don’t care about the losses I just want to see a fighting effort each and every night.
Terrence Williams should run point forward for the rest of the season. This kid is easily the best passer on the team, he had some sweet dishes. When we get 100% I’d like to see what a line up of Lopez-Yi-Williams-Lee-Harris.
It sucks that Lee got hurt but this kid needs to find a way to start being a productive player. He can’t hit jumpers off the dribble to save his life and he makes great moves and can’t finish. At some point we’re going to have to question whether or not CDR or Lee should be the starting two guard. Either way, Williams should be the starting small point forward.

I agree that he should start Josh with Brook and that Josh deserved many more minutes last night.
I lose more respect for Rod Thorn every time I see Ryan Anderson’s stat line.
Is there a reason Sean Williams wasn’t ever on the floor (or did I miss it)? But we can only dress 9 guys at the outset, 8 by the 3rd quarter, and they’re all looking exhausted. Among other things, most of them never get any playing time and several of them are kind of old. Could Sean have gone out there just for a few minutes to block a shot and let someone catch his breath? For those of you who may know more about these things, please enlighten me: with only 8 active players, why does he choose to play just 7 of them?
For all those Trenton Hassell haters, I have always supported the guy, if only because he fights hard every time he’s on the floor, including in so many of those games last year when most of the team showed no heart whatsoever. He and Keyon were the only players out there sometimes who seemed like they cared.
