Alston Worries About Youth and Attitude

In an interview Thursday with Basketball Pioneers, a Chinese hoops magazine, Rafer Alston talks about the team's youth being behind a lot of its problems, particularly on defense. But he says it's more than that. The team has been losing since training camp. The Nets, he adds, need "the right attitude towards games and the desire to win", suggesting the team has a tendency to turn it off and on.

I might be wrong here, but, isn’t having the right attitude predicated on having a coach that will instill it properly?

by Cliffy on Nov 6, 2009 8:43 AM EST reply actions

Indeed it is. Also the turning it on and off comment says something. That has been an aspect of the team during LF’s tenure as coach.

We are losing cause we have young players without much experience. We are losing cause the coach can’t get players motivated for 48 minutes. We are losing cause our owner has no money. We are losing cause we are saving all our money for 2010 FA class. We are losing cause half our roster is made up of poor or average players… It is quite clear we are supposed to lose. So why are people surprised and complaining?

Still, we gotta play and try to win. Lets go Nets…

Yeah the team is supposed to lose, but there are things that even a team with young talent should be doing that you dont see from the Nets. There are a lot of ppl that will say none of it falls on Larry Frank though if you let them tell it. The players are a smaller problem than the supposed head.

I don’t know, but I’m not seeing it coming from the coach. From the looks on everyone’s faces they REALLY want to win. They look pumped on good plays, and absolutely devastated on bad plays. Facially that is. Then once the other team makes a run, and hits shots(like all pro’s do from time to time, regardless of D) we try to punch back and the likes of Bobby Simmons takes a forced shot, or Slowpez shuts down the offense by swinging his elbows and chucking something up.

All will be good again once Devin and Keyon return. And Jarvis. Cant wait for those 3 to be back!

@ Mike

You forgot one other reason. We are losing to obtain the highest pick possible otherwise, someone would be held accountable. If know one is held accountable then that’s the plan and don’t listen to the spin, just watch what the front office does. All the reasons you stated for losing directly or indirectly point to an owner who wanted to move the team since the day he bought it and didn’t see all the trouble he was up against. BTW don’t underestimate the talent on this team. Imo it’s better than most think.

@ Mr. Big;
Yeah your right. I also forgot, “we are losing cause of injuries”. My point is that we are losing not just because Lee is shooting horribly or that Yi is not a “true” PF. We are losing for many reasons. As fans we are overly optimistic going into the season and put “reality” on hold. When reality hits we get all upset even though we should of seen it coming. Comes with the territory I guess… “The night life, is no good life, but it’s my life”…

it would not be good if we don’t get a top 3 pick

by Andy on Nov 6, 2009 10:40 AM EST reply actions

We got a #10 and #11 the last two years and I believe it worked out great for us. Sometimes you just got to be lucky.
I hope Nets fans don’t now get obsessed with scoring a top 3 draft pick. Top 10 would be just fine with me.

by Mike on Nov 6, 2009 10:48 AM EST reply actions

SOrry, but it is not like they played hard and motivated throughout the whole game, and we lost ONLY and EXCLUSIVELY because we’re less talented. Those kinda of losses would be acceptable and somewhat inspiring, giving you a sense of hope about the future. However, since Frank’s been here, this franchise has developed a very very bad culture of loosing big lead and playing uninspired for long stretches. Again, coaching is not just about thinking about the right things and lecturing them in the lockerroom. It’s about having the skills and authority to translate them into team action. Frank is a talker, but he does not have the presence of a great coach, and the players do not get inspired by him.

The young players would defintely benefit from a better more respected coach who is not a lame duck. Who that is – I have no idea. One thing though, to think that the coach is the ony issue is funny. They need better players too. Be real. the Nets have the weakest group of 3,4, 5(s) in the league without question, expecially considering TWill is more of a guard who can survive the 3.

The Playoff game that the Nets (Americans) never got to play.
-—————————————————————————————

It has been very depressing to be a Nets fan lately. To lift my spirit, i traveled back to Memory land, trying to find a something wrost than this putrid start of a season we’ve had this year with coach Frank.
Here it is:
Back in 1968, the Nets qualified for the playoffs, but the Kentucky Colonels had a similar record. To brake the tie, We were scheduled to play a 1-game playoff with th Colonels. The problem was, our Arena in Teaneck was booked for something else, so we got a place in Long Island to play.
The day of the game, both the Nets (Americans) and the Colonels showed up, only to find the floorboards still loose, the bolts unscrewed, etc.
The commissioner called a forfeit and declared the Colonels a winner.

And so was my spirit lifted, just knowing that we have seen more bitter days.

@ KJV

So what you’re saying is after 41 years we still have an owner who has us playing in a dump! It must be the coach and Yi’s fault.

by Mr. Big on Nov 6, 2009 12:40 PM EST reply actions

Rafr needs to shut his mouth and play
Instead of sayin our players are inexperienced
He should be pointing out where they should be on the floor
He doesn’t do that
instead of talking about attitude he needs to change his
Rafer needs to be a coach on the court
He spent the summer coaching teens
He should be applying that now
Rafer played with Yao and DHoward
Why did rafer have 4 assists in the last game?
He should be ashamed
I remember in the playoffs last year rafer got burned by eddie house
And he slapped house in the head!
Great example of leadership and attitude
The coach needs to go
The old players need to go too
DH needs to go also
Keep the playerswith 3 yrs and under
Hire Mark jackson or JVG
I am so mad about the VC deal RAnderson looks so good right now
Lee… not so much. Pietrus would have worked on this team too!
CDR and Twill are the truth!

@KJV;
Those “bitter” days will soon turn into “better” days in less then 250 days or so. Watching this team now is like watching your toddler take his or her first baby steps. You cringe when they fall but you know that’s what gotta happen, over and over again, until they get it right. The Nets will get it right.
