Losses Weighing On Nets' Youngsters

Now, comedians are making fun of the Nets. Stephen Colbert trashed them Monday, saying "I must be an athlete. I have as many wins as the New Jersey Nets". It's not so funny to the players, many of them with experience on championship runs. "This is completely different from anything you’ve been through," said Brook Lopez. "It’s really weighing in on us right now," added Chris Douglas-Roberts.

Time to win.
Devin Harris, Rafer Alston, Courtney Lee
three of you are the championship players.
time to lead the team to win with the new coach.

Eh? riding Dwight coattails and having your flaws disguised by playing with three all star frontcourt players makes alston and lee championship players
Would you say that if JJ Reddick was on this roster??

If we break the record I’ll expect a hilarious SNL skit about them on Saturday.

opie and anthony made fun of them on monday. at this point, all i want is to win the draft lottery.

The SNL skit would probably be about the Knicks bragging to the Nets about how much better they are. Then half of the Nets could roll out in wheelchairs, Nate could shoot the ball at the wrong hoop and Al Harrington could slam the backboard after a dunk. And then a few Mets can walk on.
I feel really bad for these guys. I’ll be there on Wednesday just to show support.

0-82 or 10-72 but dont expect much more from them!!!
without a big name around we are lucky to be selling tickets so far, even tho we had have more offers and opportunities than any other stadium to get entrances!
still i gave up this season for the nets and i just pray a big name comes in the draft.
- pick here we go

When is the last time the team with the worst record actually got the #1 pick in the draft?

I feel bad for KIKI, this is going to be ANOTHER black mark on his career…Just like his time with the Knicks was a black mark. Why would he take this job? Big Mistake…

Our best hope for a win in the near future seems to be against the Knicks. That would leave us at 0-19 before our first win! Even though they beat us last month, we were without many of our key players, so circumstances should be different (better) as long as DH and CL come to play.

“Alston said the team has not shown one instance of resolve this season, and the team’s best player, guard Devin Harris, said he sensed the team was lost when it played the Lakers on Sunday.”
If those statements are true, I hope the two veteran players who made them accept much of the responsibility. Alston, except for a single game where he had the triple double, has been the epitome of lack of resolve and ability. Devin Harris, except for the second half against the Lakers, has played as if he was “lost” for the several games marking his return to the team, even allowing for his injury.
Seems Brook and CDR have taken these losses far more to heart than those 2 and several of the other “vets” on the team. This makes me wonder which team players are really committed to this team’s success, losses or not. I really hope the spirit to win is not taken from our younger players as they struggle to play with other apathetic teammates.

@Tom
The team with the worst regular season record has won only four of the past 22 lotteries. In the nine lotteries this decade, it’s happened only twice: the 2003 Cavaliers and the 2004 Magic. Both finished with the worst regular season record and won the lottery. Both were doubly lucky, since they got to pick Lebron James and Dwight Howard. The team with the worst record can do no worse than the fourth pick. That’s also happened twice in the last decade, in 2001 to the Bulls and in 2006 to the Blazers.

I do feel bad for these players. However, they need to ask themselves – why don’t we play better defense? In any sport, defense wins championships.
by Joanne on Dec 1, 2009 9:11 AM EST reply actions
Enough of this crying. These “youngsters” are getting paid good money and live a life millions only dream of. CDR, Lee, Harris and the rest of these cry babies, just shut up and play hard.

It really makes me appreciate Lopez and Douglas-Roberts even more. Watching them play you see that they want to win sooo badly. Sure, the other Nets might to, but Brook and Chris are really my kind of players.

Do people still watch clowns like Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart and all those losers on SNL?

I really don’t think it’s our defense that’s making us lose. Our defense for points allowed was ranked 8th a week ago.
It’s our offensive power. There is none. We can’t revolve our points on the refs calls on fouls (devin harris). Vince Carter last year controlled most of the offense last year. Without him this year our offense is 80 points a game.
They need plays instead of iso’s, They need fastbreaks instead of halfcourt game majority of the time, They need good shot selections instead of last sec shot clock shots, we need some energy instead of playing like they’re going to lose every night! They need to run run run like the old 2000-2003 nets. I see the way devin harris just slowly brings the ball down and starts a play of pick and roll with little time on the shot clock.
I really hope Kiki can uplift these guys to play together and play some better, smarter ball. Seems like the chemistry is lost which equals loses.

i’m sure lebron can’t wait to play with these guys. good plan, front office.

@ Mike
The Daily show is great. You need to get on that.
I hope the Nets get blown out on Friday just to make Kiki look bad.
Sure I want them to win games, but I don’t want the hear the media praise Kiki. When the team wins it will be the players…not cause of who’s coaching…and assistant coaching.

So, best case scenarios A/B is A)we get John Wall and look to move Devin Harris for a PF or B) We get Derrick Favors.
Worst case scenario is a choice of Willie Warren, who could be the next Dwayne Wade, Ed Davis, Patrick Patterson or Al-Farouq Aminu?
That’s not so bad.

I bet the “Death March of Bataan” was a day at the beach compared to this season. How many fans/posters will we have left in three months? I for one will stick it out. Lets go Nets.
by Mike on Dec 1, 2009 10:00 AM EST reply actions
@Dirt
IMO, Evan Turner is the best wing prospect in this draft and it’s not even close. If we end up with Wall, Favors or Evans, I think that would make up for this season’s pains.
I like Warren and Aminu, Davis is good but overrated…
And I think Nets should keep Harris even if they land Wall, who is a combo guard. Some compare him to DWade.

Regarding draft:
I believe 2nd worst team (realistic for Nets) can do no worse that 5th, but need confirmation and also odds for 4th and 5th picks for 2nd worst team. The formulas have changed in recent years to minimize “tanking”.
Here are all the odds for the first 3 picks (table below):
http://www.insidehoops.com/nba_draft_lottery.shtml
As you can see, the worst team has a 64.2% chance for a top 3 pick and therefore a 35.8% chance for the 4th pick (only 25% chance for top pick – so 2010 is due for top pick!)
The 2nd worst team has a 51.6% chance for a top 3 pick (I assume 48.4% chance for either a 4 or 5 pick)
If someone wants to figure out the 4 and 5 picks, all the formulas are here: Best Wishes!
http://www.ajur.uni.edu/v2n3/Florke%20&%20Ecker.pdf
This is why it is proper in all future posts for people to say Nets will only get to pick among top 4 or 5 players in country, even with a terrible record.

Anyone going to be there tomorrow night? Going to be 10x emptier than usual (if that’s possible). At least the boos won’t be deafening if no one’s there. It’s going to be ugly enough for CDR & Brook – who take these losses to heart. They don’t need to be reminded every moment by their “fans” how awful they are. Boos won’t change the outcome.

Here come all the “I could play for the Nets” and “The Nets are signing people off the streets” jokes. Hacky, unoriginal garbage. Sports comedy/comedians are the worst. Like Kenny Mayne. This guy thinks that if he keeps acting crazy and says stuff wierd that people will think he is funny. And it works. Ugh!
