Sheridan: Nets at All-Time Low

Now, that's saying something, but ESPN's Chris Sheridan argues the Nets are "a bigger mess than they've been at any time since 1976, when former owner Roy Boe had to sell Julius Erving to the Philadelphia 76ers". Sheridan writes as well as about the bad blood between Lawrence Frank and Kiki Vandeweghe and lists the roadblocks remaining between the Nets' current situation and Mikhail Prokhorov's hoops paradise.

Let’s see:

A miserbale excuse for a professional sports franchise owner who has told the entire fan base of the team (except for the 5 percent of them living in Brooklyn) to go away. A fired 3rd rate coach about to replaced by one of his 4th rate assistants. An absolute stiff that was acquired for one of the better players in team history as a marketing ploy to garner interest from the local Asian-American community and to attract overseas interest. A “star player” that can’t even properly play his position as floor leader and the all-time record for worst start in league history about to be handed to us by the best player the team has ever had on its NBA roster. I’d say this is pretty bad!!!

Anything else? We have plenty of bandwidth.

by Net Income on Nov 30, 2009 3:06 PM EST reply actions

The big difference between this and the many previous franchise lows is that now we have a reasonable basis for hope. The team is finally abandoning its misguided move to New Jersey and is coming home to New York where it will at long last have the ability to develop a fan base that will support the team financially. We will have the richest owner in U.S. sports. We will have lots of quality draft choices and salary cap flexibility. While our record is the worst ever, we are far from our all-time low.

That’s some funny stuff about the food in the air and locker room . No wonder Newark , this team needs food stamps to eat. The players wash there own uniforms??It’s as bad as the old ABA teams… The New Jersey Nets pregame dinner is a happy meal but no toy .. WFAN won’t even talk about.them and they do there games….

@Lord Al
The Nets spread for the media is a running joke among sports writers. I never could figure out if it was extraordinarily good or extraordinarily bad.

by Net Income on Nov 30, 2009 3:20 PM EST reply actions

NI — does anyone in management express any shame or embarrassment for this poor excuse of a franchise, and for the shoddy disregard of its fans — even off the record? Do they just feel their STH are a bunch of suckers?

by smelly on Nov 30, 2009 3:21 PM EST reply actions

Let them laugh now. With new coach and management coming, and Prokys billions, plus draft choices, I still think the Nets are in great shape. Just fire Marv Albert so I won’t have to listen to his smug banter, and I will still watch and root hard. Lets go Nets…

by Mike on Nov 30, 2009 3:41 PM EST reply actions

I hope the Nets turn out to be like the Titans and go 65-0 the rest of the way lol

by pringshia on Nov 30, 2009 3:42 PM EST reply actions

Please, Marv is probably the best basketball announcer ever, and at least he has the guts to tell it like it is. He’s not afraid of James Dolan or 50 cent. Even if the Nets future is bright, and knowing the Nets luck something major goes wrong, it doesn’t excuse what they have done to the team this season. There should be anti-competive clauses built into the league bylaws in my opinion. It’s a complete joke and cost a hell of a coach his job IMO.

The quote by Tom Barrise yesterday spoken before the game was from my favorite movie ever: “Godfather II”.

The quote Tom Barrise said was “This is the business we chose” referring to the fact that his good buddy Lawrence Frank who he’s known for over 10 years was fired and that coaches get fired all the time in sports and that the team needs to move on and get ready for another game.

The quote was from the scene in Godfather II when Hyman Roth was speaking to Michael Corleone about the assassination of Moe Greene. The specific quote by Hyman Roth was “This is the business we’ve chosen”.

For uttering one of my favorite lines in my favorite movie ever, I say we keep Tom Barrise for the rest of the season.

Let’s go Nets!!!

@Lord Al

Your happy meal post was pretty funny despite it feeding into everything being a joke on the Nets. Just remember however that it was reported recently that Prokhorov spent thousands upon thousands of dollars for a smnall lunch gathering.

Proky and Brooklyn are much closer than anyone reports (Goldman would not be involved with the bonds if they were not going to sell) and soon loyal Net fans will be proud again and the press will pick on someone else.

Some tickets are being sold for $2?!? I bet they still won’t sell out. Yormark is just as culpable as ownership with these sales gimmicks. It’s helping to make us the laughingstock of sports.

This is beyond depressing, ‘cuz I still wouldn’t even pay that much to see this current team in person. It would be too painful. What a sad state of affairs. Someone wake me when this nightmare is over.

by MrT on Nov 30, 2009 4:10 PM EST reply actions

what, Yormark doesn’t have a promotion for Wed’s historic game?

by JohnY on Nov 30, 2009 4:20 PM EST reply actions

Brooklyn needs to happen. Need some positive news. Team still has some nice young talent and a future lotto pick to add..With money to go out and get a couple of guys we are in good shape. I’d look at Jeff Van Gundy if he is available.

by ChrisGNetfan on Nov 30, 2009 4:26 PM EST reply actions

My poor Nets…will everybody just leave them alone? lol. God, all the teams I root for have been horrible in the past 3 years.

Hey Issac,

“An absolute stiff that was acquired for one of the better players in team history as a marketing ploy to garner interest from the local Asian-American community and to attract overseas interest.”

I didn’t know that Bobby Simmons was Asian??? This is news to me

“MrT Says:

That’s entire too much money to watch something like this.

It’s become so bad that we all should get paid to come out to the games, or receive a credit on our cable bills for watching this stuff on YES.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Nov 30, 2009 4:32 PM EST reply actions

Things are bad at the moment. The team isn’t making any money and the league took out a loan for the nets that they don’t look like they can pay back. It’s Prokov & B.K or bust.

by Zartan on Nov 30, 2009 4:32 PM EST reply actions

I am starting to truly dislike Devin Harris. This guy is one of the worst three point shooters in the league, has never shot the 3 ball well, and it doesn’t seem to stop him from hoisting up so many 3 point shots. I almost want to see the Nets hire Avery Johnson so he could put Harris back on his leash.

by Chris2 on Nov 30, 2009 4:45 PM EST reply actions

What’s next, the nets will be flying people express??sad to say that the only press that the nets get is bad press. It’s so bad Steve Somers won’t make fun of the nets. But realy people, the fans that show up to the nets games should show up with bags on there head . The front office should call this team the Nots .( WIN ,NOT TODAY) ,sad ……..

by Lord Al on Nov 30, 2009 4:50 PM EST reply actions

OK is there a way that the Nets next year could play in MSG till Brooklyn is done?? Last year there was talk that Dolan would set up something with the help of the NBA ..

by Lord Al on Nov 30, 2009 4:57 PM EST reply actions

How about some good news?

Who is the no. 2 blocker in the NBA? Brook Lopez
…the no. 3 scoring center in the NBA? Brook Lopez
…the no. 20 rebounder in the NBA, ahead of G. Oden, A. Stoudemire, M. Beasley and L. James? Brook Lopez
…tied for no. 10 scoring shooting guard? Chris Douglas-Roberts (between OJ Mayo and R. Allen)
…no. 8 scoring rookie? Terrence Williams
…no. 3 rebounding rookie? Terrence Williams

Cheers!

It’s funny for those fans who think Harris blossoms into a superstar this year. I told you. Some players are not meant to be a first option. When they become one, their weaknesses will be shown. Harris’ statistical production has maxed out last season. As I predicted, if he is to increase his PPG (which isn’t even the case), his FG percentage will suffer. Guess what! Same scenario with Lee. Lopez is not ready to dominate yet; right now, he’s just a good NBA center.
It’s funny how some of you jumped ship now and said this team has horrible talent (even inferior to the Kings without two of their starters), while blaming our stars like VC and RJ for not bringing his teammates to playoffs or past second rounds. Double bind is not good reasoning.

by biggie on Nov 30, 2009 6:01 PM EST reply actions

biggie, you make some valid points.

I’ve been reading some postings recently, and you seem to be at odds with many if not all other message posters. What happened? Has someone done you wrong?

(cue the vioins)..Isn’t everyone here ultimately rooting for Nets success, no matter who the coach or players are? Sure, fans will disagree on who the coach should be, and who should be on the team, and who should play. But in the end, don’t we all want the same thing? Nets Ws.

Can’t we all just get along?
