Game 5 - Nuggets @ Nets - Wednesday, November 4, 7:30

Welcome to the medical ward. Yi Jianlian, like Devin Harris, is "out indefinitely". Jarvis Hayes, Keyon Dooling and Tony Battie are rehabbing, meaning the Nets will be going with no more than 10 players Wednesday as they try to avoid the worst start in team history. Denver, which beat Indiana Tuesday, is 4-0 and led by the NBA's Player of the Week, Carmelo Anthony, who's also the league's leading scorer at 34.5 ppg.

This is going to be ridiculously ugly…Typically I enjoy a Nugs Nets game…Nugs are my favorite Western Conference team; however, I don’t think I can bare this one.
What is the NBA record for biggest scoring margin between teams (i.e. Denver wins by 50, 60, 70)?
by BWoosley on Nov 3, 2009 4:16 PM EST reply actions
Now YI is out for several weeks? Think KIKI and THORN are feeling good about playing Boone and Sean and Simmons? When does Battie get on the court? This is just a MISERABLE start of the season. Denver is going to kill us, MELLO is playing like a man gone crazy. We can’t hold onto the ball, and can’t make shots. We should have made roster changes this off season in the front court, at the backup 4 and 5, we did not, and now we are going to pay…how does 0-15 sound? I am just sick about the idea of watching 11 more losses in a row. BOOO

Look… I know that it was going to be ugly season but damn. I was hoping the injury bug would be in Dallas. The more they lose the better the draft pick for us. Sigh… Still hoping for the CDR to stop celling and past the ball.

@ Paul Erstein – trade Yi, Battie, Harris, Simmons, Najera, Boone, CDR, and Hassell! Frank needs to go yesterday!

Melo will hit 40 by the third quarter and take the 4th off. What is the line on a game like this? Do they even make one? The only starter we have left from last year is Brook.

I have 6 tickets for this game for $15, but I’m not sure whether to go or not. I don’t want to go to see a blowout AND miss the Yankees game… I’m in a dilemma here.

I used to be the most optomistic Nets fan last year. Even when we played the Cavs I thought we always had a shot, with VC, Devin, and Brook on the floor. Not this year. 0-5 here we come.

I will be at the game. I am not one of those fans that leave before the game ends, however, tommorrow might be the first game that I leave early. If it is a blow out, as we all assume, I might have to leave. If they play smart competitive basketball, I will stay regardless, but, I have my doubts after watching the last game! UGHH

I actually donated my tickets to this game for a United Way fundraiser. I am a little embarassed that the winner of the raffle probably won’t get their money’s worth, they probably paid at least $5 for a chance.
My idea: substitute an exhibition match: Sly and the dunking divas vs the Nuggets. The divas get to use their trampoline. I would Ike to see them dunk against the Birdman!

Its a point guard name John Wall freshman outta Kentucky then after him Ed Davis from North Carolina PF. I figure if the Nets do get the #1 pick they’ll probably pick him up and trade him or pass him to draft the potential #2 as the #1 pick.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say this will be our first win. I think our young guys are desperate for a win at this point. Lee will have an amazing game because he probably feels like an idiot for saying this team is going to surprise people. I think the surprise is coming. If not, we just lost to an unbeaten team so no big deal.

One genuine starter (Lopez) and 2 first rotation guys (lee and CDR would be on the bench in a stronger team) and then 2 deep benchwarmers (Alstom and Boone). After these guys are knackered, then what? Oh yeah, its the TWill, Simmons, Hassel, Najera and Swat show. How much are tickets again? I hope its a Simmons bobblehead night, that might pack ’em in?
This team is going to get murdered by a winning in form Nuggets. Please don’t anyone let children see this, its not fair to break thier fragile little tiny beliefs so young. Give them hope, let them watch the baseball…

Someone made a suggestion in a previous thread that I actually may think was reasonable, after I read through the person’s clear frustrations at our performance to date – let T-Will play the point, especially while Devin is out. Alston is not going to be with the Nets long-term, Dooling isn’t scheduled to be back soon and we don’t REALLY know when Devin is going to be ready to come back.
T-Will intrigues me. He’s 6’6" and solid, a good defender, rebounder, ball handler and passer. Kind of reminds me of the JKidd mold, only larger. I’m not saying he’ll play like JKidd, but we had our best success as a franchise when we were led by a pass-first PG. And he would have a few guys around him who can put the ball in the hole like Lopez, CDR and C. Lee. Experience in the game is the best way to get young guys to come along and learn, and,, to date, T-Will has been the most impressive Net, IMO.
by MrT on Nov 4, 2009 8:38 AM EST reply actions
@ Mr. T
AGREED! He is a playmaker and good decision maker! Not to mention he plays defense and hustles. We are in rebuilding mold anyway, so, why not watch a guy who has the ability to lead. We saw that when he was on Louisville.
by JustinNJ on Nov 4, 2009 9:05 AM EST reply actions
@ Mr. T
I agree with TWill at the point. Not only for the points you make abount running the offense but on defense he is probably our best player on the perimeter. The problem is the coach doesn’t like to go “big” and might not see the advantage of this move.
by Mr. Big on Nov 4, 2009 9:20 AM EST reply actions
@Erstein
You are correct about L.Frank. However, do to his $4.5million salary that will not happen. Making trades is panic and that is not the answer either. We just have to eat it this year and wait until next years salary cap and draft. 2010 free agency is not the answer either. We have expiring contracts next year so we will be in great position for the draft with two picks plus money to sign our key players known as a young solid core. Look up G. Monroe and C.Alrdich for next years draft. They are a perfect fit for the Nets as one is starting forward and the other as a solid backup center. In 2010 new coach, these two picks in the draft and the release of the following players T.Hassell/B.immons/T.Battie/E.Najera/S.Williams/

Another slaughter tonight…. #1 draft pick, here we come :)
by ND on Nov 4, 2009 9:41 AM EST reply actions
We are really gonna suck this year, but I see that as an opportunity to develop our young guys, who show promise. Let’s throw out all the rules on how much rookies should play or who the established go-to guys are on the team, throw any and all possibilities agaisnt the wall and see what sticks. Another positive about being a poor team – a high draft pick, especially when cap space will be plentiful next summer. At worst, we will have developed our young talent, and we can decide moving forward whether to keep or trade some of them for championship caliber pieces. Despite what most say, with the cap room, young talent and a potential lottery pick (maybe #1), things look VERY GOOD if we (as Nets fans) are willing to be patient.
by MrT on Nov 4, 2009 9:48 AM EST reply actions
Can young talent be developed while losing 60+ games? What does that do to their confidence – in themselves and each other? Will the remaining 20 fans stick around for this debacle?

Words of wisdom for Nets fans, especially tonite;
"Tonight is a good night to die"
Crazy Horse, was a holy man of the Lakota. He often rode into battle unafraid of the bullets whizzing past his horse. His words, "Today is a good day to die" are immortalized amongst the Lakota. His words epitomized the philosophy of the Indian people. Our lives are a circle just as the stars; the moon and the sun are circles. We are born, we live and we die. We are all Nets fans. Of course we have a chance to win. If we didn’t, we wouldn’t play the game.
by Dirt on Nov 4, 2009 10:09 AM EST reply actions
Trenton’s right! That and a “Flying V” offense! Fire Frank and hire Emilio Estevez!
Seriously though… We need some more effort out there… Watching the Thunder last night was like watching what a young, competitive, growing team SHOULD look like. They pushed the lakers to OT with good defense and they actually tried to win. Sure there were turnovers galore and missed key shots, but you could tell they’re trying and they have a team mentality. That’s how we should look… Even the Pistons, who look more like a team of role players played well against the Magic.
We’re up to game 5 of 82 and it looks like were just going through the motions… We need somebody to light a fire under these kids… And we all know this coach’s uninspiring half time speeches don’t do squat…

when are we going to win ???
We are gonna be owned by D-leaguers anytime if they play against the Nets, it is so hard to ask for 15-67 this season ???
wow Cmon….
our only chance to win is that:
1- Melo strain his knee while getting hot before the game starts.
2- Billups goes to rescue him and land on K-mart’s Foot straining his leg.
3- K-mart, for being smashed in his foot by billups, starts a fight and the refs call him for technicals.
4- Nene is hit by k-mart and needs to undergo a surgery in his nose. cant play!
5- Birdman gets hit by an angry fan, that was aiming at simmons, by accident and he needs to leave the arena to get medical assistance.
Then only then we ’’MIGHT’’ have a chance to win and the prediction might be:
Nuggets – Nets
90————-91
but since a meteor containing gold hitting my house is a more realistic fact that the one i just decribed…
0-5

Truehoop on ESPN summed it up perfectly, When describing Houston and the Nets…
Shane Battier was the “no-stats All-Star” last night. Matt Moore of Hardwood Paroxysm: “You cannot outwork Houston right now. You just can’t. You can bust your ass all you want, they’re going to work harder, be smarter, make every single small play that you need. Teams with potential and no focus always wonder where those little plays are. The answer, as I tweeted last night, is that the Rockets have stolen all of those plays from your team and are keeping them for themselves. Shane Battier was +36 against a predicted playoff team last night. They have no star power! This isn’t supposed to happen! Even if they were to put together a fight and a few wins against overlooking teams or on back to backs, they weren’t supposed to come out and look like a team that could beat anyone, anywhere, any time.”
The Nets appear to be a mess. Lawrence Frank’s basketball knowledge is unquestioned, but the mix on this team is not working right now.

How we MIGHT win…
1) Carmelo scores his 40 points, but Lee, T-Will and Najera body up on him all night, tiring him out by the end of the game.
2) Kenyon Martin, averaging only 10 & 6 a game this season is held relatively in check by the three headed monster of Boone, SWilliams and Najera.
3) Nene and Brook Lopez go for 20 & 10 each, and keep each other busy all game.
4) Courtney Lee & T-Will D up Chauncey Billups and Aaron Aflallo all night and make things difficult for them, with Alston on Anthony Carter. Without JR Smith around, Alston on Carter is a good matchup.
5) Chris Anderson gets 10 boards, but struggles with fouls late getting into it with Najera and Brook Lopez.
6) Courtney Lee is limbered up and finally get’s his legs under him a bit to get his jump shot under control and scores 21.
7) CDR passes a little more than usual, get’s 8 assists and 17-19 points.
8) “Rookie Terrence Williams nets Triple Double Off Bench as Nets Nix Nuggets Hot Start.”

We should let CDR play point guard. He can bring the ball up all by himself and the rest of the team could stay back in the defensive zone and wait. When CDR scores or misses we will be ready on defense. Our players would not have to expend needless energy and time running up court waiting for a pass that will never come or a rebound that they will never snare. Who knows, might work… Gimme a minute. I got to refresh my drink. Happy hour starts early on Nets game day.
