Frank to Be Fired...But When?

Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski, citing "multiple sources", reports Lawrence Frank will be fired this week, "most likely on Monday". Woj writes the front office made the decision based on the team's record but also because "Frank has lost much of the team". Kiki Vandeweghe is expected to replace him, but assistant John Loyer could as well. Fred Kerber reports only Rod Thorn knows when the axe will fall. It may not be Monday.

Sad, as this is not his fault but injury and thorn and kiki’s ineptitude at putting together a team. Okay, rat’s cheap ways, too. Frank has done about all he can. Sadly Kiki will get credit for the mediocre team that will emerge after healthy bodies return. 15 wins? I hope they are all gone – I am so disappointed in THorn and Kiki for doing nothing but trade talent. Frank, like Kidd, will be missed: always prepared; always intense; always working – a NJ guy.

Kiki is taking over?
Seriously?
Would it really be that much better if they had one or two wins as opposed to zero?
We all knew they weren’t making the playoffs this year, and with the injuries they’ve had, just to be as competitive as they’ve been in games is a testament to how good a coach Frank is.
If they dogged it in games and were getting blown out every night, that would be one thing. But the effort is still there.
I hope this rumor isn’t true.

i believe he’ll get fired. something has to change and it won’t be the players. frank has given his heart and soul to this team, but just didn’t have the horses. and although the team was playing hard earlier in th year, they no longer are doing so. i can’t wait to see how much swat says under a new coach. truly. i am really interested if he has any future in the nba.

This result is not good and not fair to Frank. Actually under big pressure, he has tried his utmost for what NETS want: Get losts as many as possible in order for a top position for 2010 draft. NETS should give him a big award.

It was inevitable…
Also, the Nets are not mediocre if they win 15 games. They’re awful! Mediocre would be somewhere around 35-45 wins.

Frank is the fall guy for the franchise’s egregious start. Yes, he is the coach and therefore largely responsible for what happens when the team goes out to compete on the floor but there are other key contributing factors: the players (or lack there of due to injuries), Thorn and Kiki for not assembling as competative squad as possible but this also comes down to the mandate given to them by Ratner looking to cut costs.
If Kiki does become coach I think it will make him all the more easy to let go at the end of the season, I think it is highly unlikely there will be a vast turnaround under his coaching. An improvement certainly but we won’t be winning 30 games out of the rest available.
If Mikhail Prokhorov does become our new owner by the end of Q1 2010 then he will look to bring in his own team to run the franchise. Therefore no Frank and likely no Kiki. I think Thorn will be extended in some form but perhaps with his authority slightly diminished to help ease the transition from New Jersey to Brooklyn.

I don’t understand why people here are actually defending Frank. This man has accomplished nothing over the past 7 years. IMO, he’s severely underachieved with the rosters he’s been given. He couldn’t get the big 3 to coexist, he’s lost more games each and every year he’s been here, and I don’t think he gets any respect from his players or the referees on the court.
@Jason
The Nets play better with 8 players because Frank can’t manage a whole roster. He stunts the developments of his younger players by playing over the hill, over paid veterans.
This is for the best. Bye Frank and good luck.

ESPN is now reporting this story, based on Yahoo Sports report.
The problem for Kiki is, that when he doesn’t do much better than Frank, he might be fired by Proky and lose his GM position too.
If they would wait for all the injured players to come back and also pull off some trade, then at least Kiki could show some progress.
As it is, I still don’t expect Nets to win more than 2 games remainder of year.
I do believe though that Kiki will get more respect than anyone else available. However, how is Kiki going to teach Defense??
by jerry25 on Nov 29, 2009 9:19 AM EST reply actions
Frank is absolutely the fall guy but he got his chances in years past. He will coach again in the future and I would be interested in keeping him as an assistant, though that’s unheard of in the NBA.
Kiki probably won’t do much better, it’s just that the team isn’t very good overall. Once the shooters get back it may change for the better a little due to their opening up of the game, which currently is disastrously lackluster. Once the new ownership takes over, I expect a lot more money to be invested in staffing decisions, including coaches and front office, though I would absolutely keep Thorn for the next few seasons. Also, I would definitely not bring in someone international yet, though I have a feeling Prokhorov will do just that at some point
by Doron on Nov 29, 2009 9:24 AM EST reply actions
A meaningless and pointless decision. With an expansion league roster, it doesn’t matter who coaches them. I don’t think Kiki can coach. Who is this guy John Loyer? I have never heard of him. Good luck to LFrank.

Kiki is obviously an interim choice. He’s only there to finish out the season. I don’t think he (or anyone else) expects him to be the next full-time coach, regardless of his performance.

Keep Thorn, no way, he is the one responsible for keeping Frank around, and assembling this mess. Does he really believe Yi is the answer, he is and always will be a lousy defender. CLee is exposed as a bum an AWright wannabe. SWilliams obvious the guy has no head for basketball, the list goes on. I’d like to see Thorn join Kiki on the sidelines to coach these bums. Let’s see them get Bobby Simmons to play hard, Boone to make a freethrow, Harris to stay healthy, and somebody to make an outside shot, or inside shot for that matter.

Once BK is finalized and owners change hands the trades will happen and the search for a coach will begin
Top candidates
Jeff Van Gundy – handled big egos in a big city – great D coach
Avery Johnson – should have won in Finals – got DH to play D
Mike Fratello – great coach but a lil shady
Mark Jackson – longshot but great bball mind
How about Barkley as GM? He has an emmy!

Thorn is expendable. Remember the Nets drafting Zoran Planinc, Antoine Wright, Marcus Williams, and Victor Khryapa? That was Thorn.
Here are the 4 picks after Kiki arrived: Lopez, CD-R, Ryan Anderson, TWill.
by calling all toasters on Nov 29, 2009 9:46 AM EST reply actions
What to expect? Kiki will play every kid (including Jarvis Hayes, a favorite) every minute. Vets will sit. Expiring contracts will sit. TWill will play at the point. Lee will play til he falls over.
Wins are immaterial. Kiki wanted Frank fired last year, as Woj reports, because he wouldn’t play the kids, particularly CDR. He had to force Frank to play Yi.
Expect the entire front office to be dumped. I do.

The important things is: how are the players going to react to this? Will it be a celebration so big that they blow the Laker girls heads off or will they sop and mope and continue to feel pity for themselves? If this isn’t a rallying cry and a catapult to stardom, then this is crap. You need talent to win.

by jarkid on Nov 29, 2009 10:25 AM EST reply actions
@NI can you elaborate?
What do you mean by dumping the entire front office. Which positions do you mean? He can’t fire Yormark. Doesn’t all this have to wait until Prokhorov is in charge? Or will this be done via the “consultants” approval, so that Proky has a balanced ship when he takes over?
Regarding who Kiki plays –
Everyone seemed to think Frank played Yi too much last year (except for 4th quarter). I thought Kiki was working with SWat in past on post moves. Does SWat get a chance at PF under Kiki, even if he is expiring contract?
Who will Kiki use as backup Center, if he doesn’t play Battie (expiring contract)?
Clearly Simmons is out of rotation and Alston will get less PT. Hassell though is showing proper desire and deserves a chance to return next year if not used for trade.
It must have really irritated Kiki last year when he kept starting Simmons over Hayes.
TWill would be great as a backup point guard, if given chance to learn position.
BLopez and CLee are clearly two of the players not happy with Frank. Hope Kiki can get Lee back to last year’s form.

Not saying Frank is a bad coach, but in their minds, the players have turned him off. There needs to be a change. The injury excuse is a way Frank can leave and still save face. NY coaches don’t last long, that’s how it goes.

Harris; Dooling
CDR; Lee

Not even one of the other guys should sniff the court. Maybe Hassell, but only if injuries and circumstances force us to play him. He’s a great pro, so he’ll be ready if he’s needed but won’t complain if he doesnt get PT. I like the Capital!
by Andrés on Nov 29, 2009 10:37 AM EST reply actions
@NI
Are you suggesting that Kiki will not be playing to win at all costs, at this time, but rather develop players so that team is better towards end of year??
That would be my thinking, since free agents will only remember how the team finishes. However, Kiki could get fired by Proky if he doesn’t show wins too.
Perhaps if attendance /fan and interest grows, despite continued losses, Kiki will be rewarded. With core of BLopez, Harris, TWill and CDR, 2 draft picks and most salary cap space, it should be easy to recruit Kiki’s replacement before end of year.
by jerry25 on Nov 29, 2009 10:41 AM EST reply actions
I like Frank, it is too bad he is going to be held responsible for some terrible personnel acquisitions. Only 2 players in my mind have been solid for us, CDR and Lopez. The upside of TWill is sky high so I will not slam him.
The rest of the roster is fair game.
Harris is and has been a joke since day one as a Net. Weak. Can’t play D. Can’t shoot. Can barely get 6 assists a game. Now it seems his skinny frame is injury prone. what can I say… we got cheated.
-Alston cannot run the point in the pros. Period.
-Boone plays hard but will never amount to more than a bench player.
-Swat has amazing energy but makes 2 mistakes for every positive he brings.
-Lee has not shown anything
-Yi has tons of skill but besides being injury prone, he has no alpha dog in him.
-Najera plays tough but he will never be more than an injury prone bench guy.
These are our best. And to top it off most of them have been injured.
So the crappy record is Coach Frank’s fault? Yeah. Right.

A change had to be made in my opinion. The team is awful, if you don’t have the means to change players you have to change the coach and see if things improve. I am not a big Frank fan, I think the Nets have underachieved each year he has been coach, with the possible exception of last season. He cannot manage egos and challenge his star players, so if they actually do get a star player or two here next year, I knew I didn’t want Frank here for that. How many times did we see VC launch ill advised shots 5 feet behind the 3 point line while he was here? How many times has he done that in Orlando? Probably because Stan Van Gundy doesnt stand for that nonsense, and Frank only knows how to coddle the big name players. Thanks for the hard work, but you had to go Frank.

It is unfathomable that it took an 0-16 start for the organization to FINALLY realize it didn’t have an NBA caliber coach on its sidelines.
This move means nothing at this point, it comes 5 years too late – this season is completely lost and once again the New Jersey fans get totally screwed by team ownership.

Finally!!!
To: Lawrence Frank, thanks for underacheiving all these years and not playing our young players when it was evident that some of the veterans were not playing up to their abilities.
To: Kiki, youth must be served. Let’s play that fast break brand of basketball that maximizes our strengths. We are young and athletic, play all the kids and try your best to run opponents out of the gym. Realistically we may not get lots of wins this year but it will be an exciting brand of basketball and at least we won’t be the lowest scoring team in the NBA
Cheers to change and a new progressive future for the Nets!!!

Net Income Says:
About Kiki “He had to force Frank to play Yi.”
Wow!!! That’s a very telling statement. Is that your opinion or fact? Who would have Frank preferred to play instead? I truly believe that given the time and talent Frank would have learned to stay away from the small and weak PFs that he usually went with which led to this. The last game Marv asked Fratello about his experience as coach when he started 0-7 and Fratello mentioned changing his style as one of the things that lead to his turn around. He ended the season with a winning record. If Frank changes his style imo that would have made the biggest difference in his ability to coach. There wouldn’t be much of a difference on the court cuz of the lack of talent, the injuries and his relationship with some of his players but you never know. Bad feeling and injuries heal and talent could be recognized. Was it Thorn’s idea to bring in Kiki?

this is so long overdue. Yes, we’d be bad and yes, we’d be out of the playoffs with the team that the (ahem) braintrust has put together, but it is clear that Frank has been tuned out and that NOTHING is working. This team needs a few W’s to at least START to believe it belongs on the same court as other NBA teams.
All of those losses in summer league and preseason WERE important, contrary to what all the “only the real season matters” people were saying. We developed a losing culture, and it has to change. NOW.

It sucks he has to go out like this and be replaced with one of the few who have done nothing to help this franchise.
Eventually the team will win a game, but it won’t be because of anything Kiki does.
To say good riddance to Frank is a terrible, pathetic lack of respect for the man who lead this team for so long, often without the pieces he needed to succeed. Sure he had RJ, Jkidd and VC, but never a strong bench or the presence of a dominant PF.

Saying that he should be fired is more like looking for a scapegoat. Perhaps Ratner or even Kiki should be fired instead of Frank. I still doubt firing him is going to change anything. The last time a coach got fired earlier in a season and that team made it to the NBA Finals with a new coach in that same one was back in 1977 when Bob Hopkins was fired from the Sonics and Lenny Wilkens took over as the coach for the Sonics (now Thunder), though they lost to the Bullets (now Wizards). Why care so much if we cut a mediocre at best coach who the players seem to have tuned out? Losing in the conference semifinals is your best case scenario? Fire Frank, get a new owner inked, then start over from scratch. The Nets have like 4 dance teams, did we REALLY need to keep a cheerleader as the coach? Let the new era and the Brooklyn Nets begin!

Let Frank keep his job. If Prokhorov takes over in Feb/March 2010, Frank won’t be the coach next season, regardless. By the same token, if Frank is fired this week and Kiki takes over, Kiki won’t be coaching next year, either. It doesn’t matter either way.
In other words, what’s the point of a coaching change? This season is already lost. Firing Frank to hire Kiki only to fire him at season’s end just smacks of the organization spinning its wheels in order to save face until Prokhorov rebuilds the entire franchise in his image. What’s the point of all of this?

Frank had no players. That being said, he wasn’t the solution either and pulling the plug on him is the merciful thing to do. In like a lion, out like a lamb.

Frank is not 100% at fault but its time for the Nets to start cleaning things up and getting him out of here is the first thing
INTERESTING to see that Kiki had to force Frank to play the kids…a certain someone was saying that Frank was great at developing talent when lo and behold, the truth comes out and it turns out he had to have a pistol put to his temple in order for those kids to play!!!!
Lesson learned folks, take what certain bloggers that post on this website have to say with a grain of salt.

@BigTom
I agree and here’s what I think will happen: over the next two weeks, all the injured players will be back or nearly back. The Nets will start to win some games and the credit will go to Kiki (or Loyer).
It’s a marketing decision. Yormark wanted rid of Frank last April. Thought it would help ticket sales, get people excited about the new coach.
They’re all going to be dumped anyway or the team is moving. This may very well be the good times.

Finally the little general falls. We still stink but no longer are we stuck with one or the most overated accomplished nithing, make zero adjustments coach. Now lets get to Brooklyn.

@ Mr.Dollar Bills…….Yes , I agree… It makes me sick to hear How some people feel that frank has done nothing wrong…Then come the followers….And now …..Judgement Day…..Let the winning begin….LET’S GO NETS !!!!

For all you Frank defenders you would think the way you guts talk its like Bobby Bowden getting forced out at Florida State. Open your eyes he has been a terrible coach for 7 years and has made zero true accomplishments even when he had talent. No half time adjustments, terrible matching players, the end of game last shots with absolute no plays called or letting VC take the shot no matter the situation, the absolute no defense. This years players stink, what about last year when the team completely quit on him carried onto this year. Maybe the players who knew him from the Scott era liked him and gave him some respect but this crew just looks at him for what he is. A 5 foot 6 inch guy who never played and really cant coach who puts his fist up a lot when he isnt waving his hand or running onto the court. End of story. Yes we will be bad this year and a few to come but no doubt we needed a new coach.

Blaming Frank for the 0-16 start is not the point. At this time, the team is absolutely hopeless – by design. Ratner tore apart everything and Yormark is into marketing the opponents rather than the Nets so this is exactly what they were aiming for – treating the fans in New Jersey to absolute garbage for the remaining time here. This was evident several years ago.
What I am blaming Frank for are the failures in ‘04, ’06 and ’07 to at least return to the Conference Finals while Jason Kidd was stillin uniform (and essentially also coaching the team since we didn’t have a real one).
In ’04 with the Nets leading Detroit 3-2 and Game 6 in the Meadowlands, the team jumped out to a big early lead before Larry Brown called a timeout and made major adjustments which led to a crushing defeat and a trip back to Detroit for Game 7 which was a disaster. Kidd by the way was on one leg in this series but it just goes to show you how much he meant to this team and with Indiana waiting in the Conf. Finals, the Nets may have somehow gotten back to a 3rd straight NBA Finals if they could have won that home game vs Detroit.
In ‘06, many NBA experts felt the Nets could take out the Heat – the Cliff Robinson weed suspension was a joke and smelled like another rotten fix job by the NBA to find out and penalize him at this time. If Net Income has some inside dirt on that one, i’d love to hear it. Aside from the loss of Uncle Cliffy – a Lawrence Frank led team was never going to beat one coached by Pat Riley – simply not going to happen.
In ‘07 with the coaching matchup essentially a toss-up, Mike Brown is one of the few guys at the helm in the league that I think Frank could match wits and credibility with, the team was again taken to the cleaners (a large portion of the blame ca be placed on VC’s total ineffictiveness down the gut of games – he might as well have kissed LeBron’s shoes on the court in the final minutes of the games).
Bottom line: While Kidd was here, the team should have at least gotten back to the Conference Finals and instead had no chance with this guy coaching the team.
He is great at breaking down tape and preparing for opponents – that makes him a valuable ASSISTANT COACH. A head coach at the NBA level demands so much more – qualities he simply didn’t have to offer which included commanding respect from his players, opponents and league officials. These past 5 years have been a joke – mostly due to Ratner, but also in large part to the lack of an NBA caliber coach to take the reigns.

Gotta take my hat off to Frank. He was really a stand up guy, and I’m proud of the way he acted and ran this team while he was here.
He’s a hard worker and a humble guy. Hard to ask for a more likable guy as a coach.
Good luck to Frank, and his next job. I’ll enjoy watching him coach a better team in the playoffs.

@Netsdaily
The rankings don’t matter. Having bad defense means allowing more points than you score. We first have to get that straight!!!
by Ballagurl on Nov 29, 2009 1:55 PM EST reply actions
Thank you Mr. Dollar Bills.
ppoppa – Frank won’t get another head coaching job in the NBA – his options would be to return to being an assistant (with a chance at an interim gig if the HC got fired) or to become a mid-level college coach which might be his best course of action.
by Isaac on Nov 29, 2009 1:59 PM EST reply actions

Wait, you don’t. He’s looked upon highly around the league. He WILL get another head coaching job.

Of course Frank will get another job. He will have another job by the Draft. He isn’t 40 years old and has 225 wins.
Thorn won’t get another GM job. He turns 69 early next year.
Kiki is the most likely to kept on.

Yormark is a keeper!! He has been great luck for this organization and has made them a first class operation. His marketing has brought out rabid and excited fans in drives to cheer on this team.
Hopefully they keep yormark on FOREVER!!!!!

well, we’ll see how Frank does in his next head coaching job. but my guess it will be with a sub.500 team and his career coaching record will remain about same.
let the “Fire Kiki” chants begin…

Eric Mangini got another job one season after the Jets, so I am not going to claim L.Frank will not be able to find work after the Nets. I do not think L.Frank will ever be an excellent NBA head coach, I think he can be a mediocre head coach and throughout my years of watching the NBA I have seen lots of teams coached by seemingly mediocre head coaches. Mike Dunleavy has been head of the Clips for so many years and he coached the Blazers for years before that. I personally think Dunleavy is an awful coach. Sam Mitchell I thought was below mediocrity and he even got a coach of the year award. Isiah Thomas, well you know that story. Bottom line, firing Frank just means we aspire to something greater than mediocrity, and for that, I am thankful.
by Chris2 on Nov 29, 2009 2:39 PM EST reply actions
Frank is not gonna have a next job. Trust me!
Why would you as the owner hire a coach who seems to have difficulty selling his stuff to NBA level players. We’ve had many different players who thrived well on other teams coming into the Nets and experienced the same thing. There’s one constant: Frank.
RE: the news, man, it’s about time!

My candidate to replace: Bill Lambeer. Won NBA championship as a player. Won WNBA championship as a coach. Forget all those Frank clones coaches. They’re all good to be assistant coaches. I will drop Frank to be assistant to the head coach.

I felt bad for Frank by the end, so I’m glad it finally happened…. it was inevitable, whether it was after the road trip or after the season.
He still worked his butt off and stayed professional…. unlike someone like Don Nelson.
I’ll miss Frank, but I’m excited to see if this means the end of small ball and the end of playing the useless vets.
The only thing I worry about with Kiki is the even more Najera and more Yi when he’s back. I really wish we kept Ryan Anderson, was the the superior PF both last season and this season as well.

You have a team looking for a coach, Byron Scott is available, Mike Fratello, Mark Jackson,Mo Cheeks,Bob Hill, Brian Hill, John Lucas, Paul Silas, Jeff Van Gundy and Lawrence Frank.
I’m sure L Frank is the first one I would interview/hire. NBA job he would be lucky to get a job coaching at NJIT. No really as the poster said before perhaps he would be qualified to coach a mid level college team like Rutgers or Rider.
by muletrain on Nov 29, 2009 2:56 PM EST reply actions
My guess is Frank’s career will be similar to JVG. He’s ultimately suited for TV.

Bill Laimbeer is one of the most pompous and crass individuals you would EVER come across. Just a bad guy all around. Him becoming coach is the 2nd worst thing that could happen to this franchise other than moving to Brooklyn.

Jeff Van Gundy, Tom Izzo and Rick Pitino. Those are the three coaches this team should be looking into for next season.

@ Isaac…..I agree with you about Laimbeer…Those are the qualities that I like in him as a Coach…..He will demand respect from his players and the Referees…..I feel those are two of the things that we have been lacking….We need discipline and respect as a team……I was at Mohegan Sun several years back and Bill was there because his team was playng the Ct Sun..I followed him when he was on the floor and when the time was right , I approached him very carefully and asked him for his autograph…..He was very rude and obnoxious but after wrestling him down to the floor and pinning him to the carpet ,he gave me his autograph……Actually , it didn’t happen like that but that’s what I felt he was going to do to me…He ia a very intimidating monster…..How about we bring him in as an assistant although I believe that he already is with another team ??

Pompous? The guy wins. This is basketball for men. You can’t be nice to people eating your lunch. This team needs backbone.
Lambeer is the man.

NetFan48 – Izzo has not coached in the NBA but now that he set the all-time wins record at MSU maybe he be willing to give it a try. The man is a winner plain and simple although i’m sure we are going to get stuck with some European coach if Prokorov does buy the team.

you are right the team DOES need backbone but not from a louse like Laimbeer. I am telling you, this is a terrible person.
at Netfan48 – your story about Laimbeer paints a pretty accurate portrayal of him – he is rude to EVERYBODY and would wear out his welcome in the area within a month – if not shorter.

Nets coaching options:
1. Mark Jackson
2. Jeff Van Gundy
3. Anthony Johnson
Keep Rod and Kikki, however, these are the terms:
Rod ONLY deals with trades.
(He has drafted horribly for the most part)
Kikki ONLY deals with the drafting of players.
(Bad influences on the RJ and Vince deals).
This is only good if he was the one to pull the trigger on drafting Brook, Ryan, CDR and Terrence.
