New Debate over Kidd-Harris Trade

It was a debate that seemed settled last December 19 when Dallas and Jason Kidd arrived in New Jersey for the first time since Kidd had been sent packing. To chants of "Thank You, Cuban", Devin Harris torched his former team with 41 points and 13 assists. Now with Harris hurting, the Nets reeling and the Mavs thriving, the debate's been rekindled. Harris says it's too early to declare a winner in the deal.

Nets got the better end of this deal, hands down. Harris isn’t the reason we’re doing so poorly to start the season. Also, the Nets were wise to get rid of Kidd when they did. They got plenty in return for Kidd, who is on the wrong side of 35 and wouldn’t have made this lot any better had he stayed. This trade not only gave us a All-Star PG but financial flexibility and picks. Those assets have to be considered in the final analysis, as well.
Best of luck to JKidd, though. I would have been frustrated by the goings-on in Netland at that time, too. He has a chance to play for a championship, something important for a player his age. If he stayed here, he would have slit his wrists, and for good reason.

When BOTH teams have billionaire owners, then we can talk.

I said this then, I said it throughout last season and i’ll say it now: the Nets never should have traded Jason Kidd especially not for Devin Harris and the spare parts they got with him. Kidd is still the FAR superior point guard even as he begins to slow down and it’s not even close. Harris will never in his wildest dreams be the type of play-maker that Kidd is and instead will always be a score-first player that rarely leads to much success considering the responsibilities of his position.
Had we gotten Brook Lopez with Kidd on board – we would be in totally different position right now. Would we be headed back to the Finals? Probably not – but we would likely be looking at a 45-win season with shot at a playoff series win. For those of you Ratner-Yormark cronies that scoff at that, I’d say that sounds a lot better than sitting on the precipice of history as the team with the worst start in the history of the league.
I hope J-Kidd comes to the Meadowlands Wednesday night and torches this pathetic excuse for an NBA team to the tune of 20 assists and then maybe some of you will finally remember how grateful we should be for all that this man brought to our franchise before it was ruined by Ratner.

Kidd is still my all-time favorite and I wanted him to stay a Net till retirement. That being said- I can only hope the Harris’ terrible play lately can be just be attributed to rust, injury and/or overall bad team chemistry. In the long run if Harris can stop injuring himself we should make out on the deal. I still don’t think Harris deserved his all-star nod. Too much hype and not enough substance accurately describes what he has brought to the table. Kinda like Yi and Lee.

Its all about human emotions. Kidd was frustrated and didnt want to play here anymore. There was no point holding on to him and going through drama. We got the best we could get taking into account the situation at that point of time. All said and done, i agree with Isaac. Kidd is/was a far superior point guard than Harris will ever be. Kidd saw/sees things no ordinary point gaurd can. He has the 6th sense that Harris will never have. Either you are born with it or you are not. Plus, Kidd had the will to change games that most people donot.

Jason Kidd is a prima donna who wanted our of here so bad to the point he faked a migraine and missed a game to force a trade. I could care less about him, sorry!
by Andrés on Nov 28, 2009 11:23 AM EST reply actions
well then Andres, I guess you could care less about the only truly great moments in franchise history – because they were ALL courtesy of Jason Kidd.

Kidd is a legend. I think he fits in well with Dallas. My son will be born soon, and if he likes basketball (most likely he will), I will get him countless tapes of J-Kidd’s best games, so he can learn how to play the game the right way, without having to cheat or be dirty….(I will not talk to him about McDonald’s French fries, however).

Vince Carter made D. Harris look better than he actually was.
There, I said it.
Hollah!!!!

No matter. The last couple of years have just been about Brooklyn.
A brighter future will arrive soon and we will no longer care who won the Kidd trade.

While JKidd will always have a special place in team history, he had to go. He was going to be disruptive and unhappy if he stayed. We got better value than anyone thought we would. I would have liked to see him retire as a Net but it was not going to happen.
Devin could be a solid PG but as we know LFrank “gave him the keys”. I think that Devin and others on the team could benefit from better in game adjustments and coaching. Maybe that will happen soon. We’ll have to see.

Harris has been treated unfairly, when looking at his shooting statistics.
So many of his misses were toss ups while getting fouled. Most of his points yesterday came from free throws but his 6-22 is misleading (13/17 free throws).
Devin has been barely missing on a number of drives, that he should be making in a week or so. Most of Devin’s points were good attempts – drives and drives with a short pullup jumpshot. He’s not hurting the team with his shooting.
What Devin needs is a quality PF and to get his shooting guard – CLee in the lineup and shooting like he did last year. TWill needs to get better inside at the SF position.
With those improvements in his teammates, Devin could be getting 10 assists per game to go along with his 22 pts. per game.
I know CDR and Hassell are playing better than CLee, but at some point CLee needs a chance to prove himself again. Is his groin injury lingering?? Frank is making the Carter trade look like a total disaster, if Lee can’t play like a starter.
by jerry25 on Nov 28, 2009 1:07 PM EST reply actions
incorrect when you get fouled your shot attempt doesnt count. devin is a skinny, injury prone and overrated shoot first sg in a pgs body. you can’t be a winner with a guy like that

by kobe24 on Nov 28, 2009 2:06 PM EST reply actions
on that note, the future of this team is still very bright, just not this season, most of these guys who you consider saviors should be gone to make room for your draft picks and a potential signing
by kobe24 on Nov 28, 2009 2:07 PM EST reply actions
CDR is not just playing better than Lee.
He is better than Lee, any way you look at it.
Lee was a product of a system last season; he looked good without the defense loading up on him. In reality, his stats were not better than other rookies last year like Rush in Pacers. We overrated him, period!!!
CDR has been thriving even though the defense was loading up on him. In other words, CDR is showing skills and effectiveness as a first/second option of a team; something that Lee has never experienced. Lee is a role player; CDR is a going to be a star.
by Biggie on Nov 28, 2009 2:13 PM EST reply actions
@ Biggie – just wait until Devin Harris comes back to full strength and you’ll realize that neither Courtney Lee or Chris Douglas-Roberts will likely be anything more than bit players in this “system” that Lawrence Frank runs.

at David:
“A brighter future will arrive soon and we will no longer care who won the Kidd trade.”
Absolutely incorrect. For many of us, there is no future with this team if they move to Brooklyn. And even for those that plan on rooting for the team in Brooklyn, there is no guarantee the on-court product will be much better. Your buddy Ratner DESTROYED everything this franchise had finally built itself up to be. Someday when Thorn is released from Ratner’s shackles he might admit how miserable this situation has been for him. Not to say he hasn’t mader some mistakes on his own, but it was obvious from the day Ratner arrived this team was headed straight down the toilet.

here is a little information for you:
Nets NBA History – Playoff Series Victories
1977-2001 (pre-Kidd) ONE – (vs Sixers in ’84)
2002-2007 (With Kidd) NINE (3 in ’02, 3 in ’03, 1 in ’04, 1 in ’06, 1 in ’07)
2008-2009 (post-Kidd) NONE
Those are the facts folks. Kidd is a legend – nobody in team history (save for Dr. J in the ABA) holds a candle to him, least of all Devin Harris.
by Isaac on Nov 28, 2009 2:53 PM EST reply actions
Lesson learned. If you have HOF players, don’t trade them. Keep the team competitve through the draft and smart siignings (this is where Thorn failed). That being said, Kidd demanded to be traded (maybe he wouldn’t have if he was surrounded by enough talent). We could easily have the following team:
Lopez/Boone
Krstic/Glen Davis
RJ/Hayes
VC/CDR
Kidd/Dooling/Farmar
lower 2009 pick

Totally agree with your points about CDR. Hope CDR becomes a star as a member of a new and improved Nets team. So far, his outstanding play is overshadowed by this team’s struggles.

We should all give Kidd a standing ovation when he comes here on wenesday. I will be there cheering for him but i hope we don’t break that record. It will be bittersweet for Kidd, it’s very ironic that Kidd has the chance to humilate us on his second game back.

harris is still only 26 and is only paid $8M/yr…a good young player with a very cost-effective contract. kidd is a 37-yr old pg who is (now) paid the same amount and he has very good players around him. kidd is a Nets legend but it was time for him to go and we got a good player with a good contract and 2 1st rounders in return (ryan anderson who became courtney lee then the mav’s 1st rder next yr). once we land lbj/wade and bosh/boozer next year and draft john wall plus 2 shooters w/ the other 2 picks then use the mid-level for Newark native Shaq then let’s compare the trade again… :)
by jirohkanzaki on Nov 28, 2009 5:44 PM EST reply actions
@ Isaac
You are not only incorrect but it is also disgraceful that you will be rooting against the Nets when the Mavericks make their trip. I agree with Andres. Kidd forced his way out and he no longer wanted to be a Net. It was time to move on. I loved Kidd during his glory days and I will always remember those days fondly, but at the time he was traded he had long overstayed his welcome.
by KFranchise on Nov 28, 2009 6:35 PM EST reply actions
first of all, the Nets had no choice to trade Kidd. I would still pull the trigger on this deal every time regardless of how I think Harris does not give a damn about playing defense or leading this team. but Kidd had quit on this team period, and had to go.
Regardless, Harris can be used as a trading chip because of his skill and his contract. We are in a better position with Harris here than we would be still catering to Jason Kidd’s whims that have helped to put this team into the toilet.

This team’s future is not dependent on whether you are a fan of it or not. You should understand that.
Actually, I really don’t understand why you are a fan. You’re quite fair weather, to be sure. You object to a move to Newark as well as Brooklyn. Some here are hopeful the Nets move to Newark. I can respect that. But I cannot respect a fan whose connection with the team has to do whether or not he can still drive to the game from his northern New Jersey home. Convenience as a rationale for support. Strange.
by Net Income on Nov 28, 2009 7:16 PM EST reply actions
I really have to say none of this matters.
If Prokhorov comes in, it will be housecleaning and a move first to Newark, then Brooklyn, unless the NJ pols screw it up. Brand new operation. No loyalties to the past, to front office, to players, etc.
As Prokhorov said to a Russian TV interview a couple of months ago, “only first place matters”. And as Kirilenko said to a Utah reporter, he is more interested in “building a team than spending money.” Building a team means starting over.
And if it doesn’t work out, prepare for some real anxiety and possibly heartbreak.

@NI – I have faith in Proky and we do have a few good building blocks in CDR, Lopez and Harris.
For better or worse, Rod’s job was keeping things together until Brookyn.
I really like the job Kiki has done and would like to see him stay whether or not Rod goes.
I do think Lee over Ryan and TWil over Tyler will both turn out to be mistakes and smell more of Rod than Kiki.

I think the trade should have been Vince Carter, Ryan Anderson, and Chris Douglas-Roberts for Rafer Alston, Tony Battie, and Mickael Pietrus.

Kidd is a better passing-first point guard, but I could live with Harris.
Let’s observe if Harris can keep stay healthy. But just look for next season.
Brook Lopez / Shaquille O’neal / Josh Boone
Chris Bosh / Yi Jianlian / Eduardo Najera
LeBron James / Terrence Williams / Jarvis Hayes
Chris Douglas-Roberts / Courtney Lee
Devin Harris / John Wall or What / Keyon Dooling
This team could easily win 50 games with Harris.

Jason Kidd can’t guard any speedy point guard right now, they are looking good, but will be dead in the playoffs.
Mo Williams torched Jason Kidd tonight.
25 points vs 9 points.
You would be sad when Jason Kidd can’t hit a shot in the playoffs.
I know Kidd bring us a good record in the playoffs, but he is that the same Jason Kidd.

@Isaac
I have been making that last point of yours for the past year with the argument that winning brings and builds fanbases! We have only had one team that has taken our team to competitive and elite status. Those were the teams JASON KIDD were on. Your stats about our playoff caliber teams shows what a joke this franchise has been for 27 out of the last 32 years. I think it is a joke that people say that New Jersey can’t support the Nets when we have virtually seen three decades of garbage basketball as our product.

Although hind site is 20, they probably could’ve gotten away with just getting rid of RJ, leaving and a sales pitch of entincing Kidd with some kind of promise with a great young/talented draft (lopez, anderson,CDR).

CDR
Boone/Anderson/Yi
Lopez
