Carter, Anderson Pulling for Former Teammates

They still watch. They still talk to their former teammates and although their team is doing well, Vince Carter and Ryan Anderson worry about the Nets. "I always keep up with them," said Carter. "I know they are in a tough, tough situation." Anderson, who talks regularly with Brook Lopez, added, "It's a rough time for them. I know they will break out of this funk sometime soon because they have a lot of talent."

Another awesome trade!! I never thought Vince would take this team anywhere (and he didn’t) – but the mistake was re-signing him in the 1st place to all that money and then holding on to him until we got nothing back for him. To make matters worse we apparently traded a decent role player along with him! Since the Kidd and RJ deals, the two best in Nets history, the trades, free agent signings and most of the drafts (outside of Brook and possibly T-Will) have been horrific!!! It’s not all Thorn’s fault since Ratner obviously gave him limited fundage to work with but this has been brutal front office work leading to our 0-15 nightmare team.

And when I refer to the Kidd and RJ deals above – I mean getting them not trading them, both of those deals were horrible in my opinion. I will take J-Kidd at 43 and cranky over what we got for him. An injury-prone poor man’s Stephon Marbury (who at least has a better attitude than him).

by Isaac on Nov 26, 2009 9:22 AM EST reply actions

These guys both played their tails off last night against Miami, they played good defense on wade’s shot but the bigs forgot to box out underneath the hoop. Vince was hitting soime wicked shots. Seeing VC go at it with Wade in the 4th was great and Anderson was knocking down the threes. I miss these guys.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Nov 26, 2009 9:32 AM EST reply actions

I just remembered that we won the court case.

All is well.

by David on Nov 26, 2009 9:35 AM EST reply actions

I miss them too . I miss VC because he was such a great leader. Helping all the new players adjust. I miss Ryan anderson because he was young, good, and Lopez’s friend and i miss the show ryan and brook had. i miss them for tons of other reasons though.

I was thinking last night…injuries aside, Courtney Lee is not the same player he was last year because he’s not playing in that system (aka Dwight Howard) and Ryan Anderson is a better player than he was last year because he is in that system. Not taking anything away from him or making excuses for Lee, but having Superman on both ends of the court does improve one’s game. Look at Rashard Lewis. He led the NBA in three pointers last year. SVG is a very good coach (as long as youre winning) and the front office has gone an excellent job in putting that team together.

by Net Income on Nov 26, 2009 9:43 AM EST reply actions

Even at the time of the trade I thought it was bad. If the Nets really liked CLee, they could have drafted him instead of R Anderson. Essentially, we traded VC (and his big contract) and RAnderson for CLee. That just wasn’t smart. Now, the Nets look like crap but they think they are going to hit the lottery with a big time free agent.

by Eugene on Nov 26, 2009 9:59 AM EST reply actions

Increasingly, I have wondered if the Nets passed on the original deal (VC for Battie, Alston and Redick) not just because they wanted Lee, but because that deal would have cost them $2.9 million more this year than the final deal (VC and Anderson for Battie, Alston and Lee). Anderson and Lee’s contracts cancelled each other out.

by Net Income on Nov 26, 2009 10:08 AM EST reply actions

I can’t wait until the offseason comes around so this mess could come to a halt. Rod and Kiki better make the big deal, otherwise the team is doomed for life.

by Mohammad on Nov 26, 2009 10:12 AM EST reply actions

I have previously been a proponent of the trade but I have since changed my mind, mostly because of Ryan Anderson’s development. The guy is only 21 years old and he is getting better and better each game. It looked like last year he was mainly a spot up 3 point shooter, but he has added so much to his game, he get get to the hoop almost at will, he can post up, he can pass, etc. This isn’t only a result of playing with Dwight. He was tearing up summer league and even then it was evident he has grown. The guy is going to be an absolute stud, even if he never becomes a very good defender. I still like Courtney Lee a lot and think he will show a lot of improvement over the course of the year, but we have other guys that can play his natural position, like CDR and TWill. I know about the duplication Kiki spoke of with Yi and Anderson, but what is wrong with duplication if both players are good? And I think Yi will be good too. Anderson looks like he is going to be one of the league’s best shooters and to do that as a PF is rare. When all is said and done, we may have drafted three of the top ten players available in 2008. And we screwed it up.

by Chris2 on Nov 26, 2009 10:32 AM EST reply actions

The thing is that we knew Anderson had the potential to play this well due to what we saw from him last year. We knew the kid could play. Lee on the other hand seems to have solely benefited from being in that system and now that he comes here and things aren’t as easy, he looks like a very inefficient player. Now, I think in time if he gets his feet under him he can improve, but right now Orlando looks like they ripped us off.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Nov 26, 2009 10:43 AM EST reply actions

Anderson has a feel for the game that can’t be taught. CLee benefited from Dwight. CLee has Antoine Wright written all over him. This trade will be regretted for years.

by Tom F on Nov 26, 2009 10:47 AM EST reply actions

@ Tom F – If Courtney Lee has become another Antoine Wright, then I don’t know what to think about Antoine Wright.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Nov 26, 2009 11:00 AM EST reply actions

R.Anderson will be a free agent in the year of 2012. Only will be 23 years old at that time. Being very good friends with B.Lopez would only make sense to sign him then and bring him back at that time. If I was GM that is what I would do and make him a key piece off the bench on the future championship teams in Brooklyn.

GO BROOKLYN NETS! GO BROOKLYN NETS! GO BROOKLYN NETS!

Courtney Lee is going to be another Antoine Wright with better shooting and more athletic.

by jarkid on Nov 26, 2009 11:33 AM EST reply actions

How good is VC? Good enough so that when he is subtracted from the Nets they go from winning 40% of their games to 0% (so far).

How bad a mistake was it to trade him?
Well, having a talented player on a young team that actually looks like it needs a superstar to get to the next level, makes it far more likely that such a superstar free agent will sign with the Nets, than just having a young core with no established star (think Celtics and Paul Pierce).

Extra cap flexibility if useless if the most talented players won’t come.

What about the rest of the trade?
Finally, RA may turn out to be a far superior player to CL.

by NetsSince76 on Nov 26, 2009 11:42 AM EST reply actions

I wish we could have kept Ryan. He looks like he’s going to be real good for a long time. But this deal won’t be final until we see if dumping VC’s salary was worth it. If the trade turns into Bosh or Amare and Joe Johnson and a top 3 pick. It’ll be worth it. Right now it looks like we got fleeced. This year will be a year for development and that’s it..

by supreme on Nov 26, 2009 11:56 AM EST reply actions

VC, take back C. Lee….He doesn’t want to be up here!

Hollah!

by Shawn Carter on Nov 26, 2009 12:16 PM EST reply actions

vc was clutch again against the heat hitting what should have been the dagger but jason williams clunked 2 free throws which cost them the game…

by jirohkanzaki on Nov 26, 2009 12:25 PM EST reply actions

also, again vc got no respect…that “block” by wade was clean up top but wade was pulling vc down with his other arm and also o’neal was giving carter the elbow, too…lots of contact but no foul…the refs would have called a foul if brook lopez was breathing on wade.

and then, wade’s AIRBALL was credited as an ASSIST to beasley which won the game.

we got to go after this guy wade next year…he gets everything to be called his way… :)

by jirohkanzaki on Nov 26, 2009 12:32 PM EST reply actions

VC has played superstar ball with no calls for six years now. He will remain one of the best until his late 30’s..Betting against him was the wrong thing to do. Devin Harris should be gone, not Vince. Shame on you thoroughly dishonest fans

by Mark on Nov 26, 2009 12:37 PM EST reply actions

Thorn fudged up big time by giving VC the 5 year contract instead of the 4 year contract. I have been thinking that since the day the deal was signed. Could have had VC helping the kids out this year, including Ryan, and still have maximum cap flexibility next year. Best of both worlds.

by Chris2 on Nov 26, 2009 12:45 PM EST reply actions

WOW ….@ NI….Before I read your comment I was thinking of writing the exact same thing as you….So True…Stan van gundy is very under rated as a coach…With the proper coach and system the team and players that we have would be much better….A system where Brook is basically our Batman (Not yet at the Superman level)…And Lee would excel once again….I think this will happen once we get our new owner…

by NetFan48 on Nov 26, 2009 12:53 PM EST reply actions

@ Mark – all will be well once we get Bosh.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Nov 26, 2009 12:56 PM EST reply actions

Try to understand that if Anderson went to the Celtics and/or the Lakers , the same would be happening…..If he went to the Grizzlies or the Wolves he would be the same Ryan Anderson that we had….It’s the Team,Certain Dominant Players and the System(I would say coach but I feel that Doc Rivers is not in the same category as Phil Jackson or Stan Van Gundy…..He is no more special than let’s say Luc Longley was while playing with michael Jordan…..

by NetFan48 on Nov 26, 2009 1:04 PM EST reply actions

Wade isn’t going anywhere…….But if he did I would still like him over Lebron….I’m not sure why , But I would….My choices would be Wade and Amare…Then Courtney Lee would be great again….

by NetFan48 on Nov 26, 2009 1:08 PM EST reply actions

wow, i can’t believe no one has mentioned the role Yi played in the VC/Anderson for CLee trade. Thorn/Kiki/Yormark was willing to throw in Anderson because he was no better than Yi. While most of us boo’d this, NetIncome defended that decision by pointing out Yi (2nd yr) had similiar year to Anderson (rookie)… and now that Anderson is developing on schedule to being a very productive player while Yi has regressed EVERY year since draft day (injuries whatever), the latest excuse is players benefiting from JVG’s system… wow, i thought we were told just 2 weeks ago LFrank was the most brilliant strategist. i been on NetsDaily for 2 years now and most definitely a member of the boo-birds. as a Nets fan, must rather root and be proud of this team than to deride it, but EVERY negative post us pessimistic fans have written about have come to fruition (brooklyn aside; us realistic fans knew brooklyn would not fail, not with all the money at stake). as a Nets fan, i don’t know if i am angrier with Thorn/Kiki/Yormark or the bunch of delusional optimistic Nets fans we got here.

by JohnY on Nov 26, 2009 1:34 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, that Wade “BLOCK” was retarded. Earlier in that game Pietrus fouls Wade on a jump shot during his follow through after hoisting up the shot by touching his forearm—-this happens ALL the time in basketball where the offensive player just goes through his shooting motion and incidentally making contact at the end….But VC comes off the screen clean and Wade gets the ref bailout call after he pretty much clubs VC's arms from the side dragging him down to the floor.

And Ryno is awesome so far, he even admitted to having a bad rookie year and he knew he was better than advertised on the Nets. Even though he's playing with more all stars, I like his team first mentality and willingness to get better in regards to his handles and pull up shooting.

So far, CLee is full of it and maybe he can play with Dwight at the ASG on NBA2k10

by NateDD on Nov 26, 2009 1:35 PM EST reply actions

I love VC, but he is not going to lift up this poor system and bring some of these subpar teammates to the promiseland. I thought the Nets would’ve had a great chance to get into the playoffs this year, if we had kept VC, added TWill, and signed another FA like Bass. The huge improvement of CDR and Lopez would’ve alleviated the responsibility of VC and Harris like last year.

Harris-Dooing-TWill
VC-CDR-TWill
Hayes-CDR-TWill
Bass-Yi-Swat
Lopez-Boone

*You can see I omitted Simmons becuase he never deserved to start in the first place.

by Biggie on Nov 26, 2009 1:42 PM EST reply actions

No doubt JohnY. The Nets definitely favored keeping Yi to Anderson which made the latter expendable. This is likely mostly due to business and the impending sale of team at that time.

Ideally, I wouldn’t want Yi and Anderson as my PFs, not nealry tough enough or ohysoacal enough (right now I’d love them both) but in chosinjg one for hoops reasons only, I would have favored Anderson because of what another poster said above – Anderosn has a feel for the game that Yi does not. B-ball IQ and he is way more of a scrapper. But he has signifianct weaknesses too. He is ideally suited to play wityh Howard the Beast, not Lopez.

It’s a real shame he was dealt along with Crater considering what the Nets got in return (0). The trade has $$$ written all over it. I think CDR is on his way to making C. Lee expendable anyway although it’s only been 3 weeks. Maybe they can turn Lee + into a prospect at the 3 and 4 positons. They really need that.

by Kimosabe on Nov 26, 2009 2:37 PM EST reply actions

I said all last year how much more I liked Ryan over Yi starting. Some of you agreed, but, some couldn’t get over some shooting slumps from Ryan. Big whoop. He was a rookie and playing his butt off with the minutes he was getting. I would hands down take him as our starting PF over any scrub we have at that position. Unbelievable. That trade was garbage. We gave away a star and fan favorite in Vince and an upcoming regular rotation player who easily would be our starter this year in Ryan. I really hope all that cap room turns into someone worth while.

by JustinNJ on Nov 26, 2009 8:17 PM EST reply actions

But, on Thanksgiving, lets be thankful for the fact that we still have our draft pick for next year unlike the New York Misfits.

by JustinNJ on Nov 26, 2009 8:24 PM EST reply actions

Definitely made the mistake of trading Ryan instead of Yi for C.Lee.

Besides, don’t forget that Ryan is probably 3 1/2 years younger than Yi. If Nets current management doesn’t think that is true, then they get what they deserve.

Yormark probably had something to do with getting and retaining Yi as another promotion.

Now with a rich Russian in charge, only winning should have been a consideration. I wonder if Orlando would have taken Yi in lieu of RA?

by jerry25 on Nov 26, 2009 10:30 PM EST reply actions

@ Kimosabe – The Nets did brilliantly with that trade.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Nov 26, 2009 10:37 PM EST reply actions

Alston is the Net who must go, in a trade, once Dooling is healthy.

Using DH, CLee, CDR, TWill, Hayes and KDooling for 3 positions (with Hassell as needed) is about right, considering 1 or 2 players will be injured at any given time.

How about Alston for Brandon Bass, since BB isn’t getting much PT and Nelson is injured?

by jerry25 on Nov 27, 2009 12:37 AM EST reply actions

brandon bass just signed a big contract, the nets went through all this trouble to clear cap then ruin it now because of brandon bass?

by jirohkanzaki on Nov 27, 2009 12:43 AM EST reply actions

bass = classy player with long productive career ahead. If I were GM I’d get bass than buy him a house.

by Pigdaddy on Nov 27, 2009 1:55 AM EST reply actions

Bass signed a Bargain contract. 4 years at 18 million or 4.5 per year. He looked so unhappy sitting on the bench while Anderson was getting all the PT.

Had Proky already been owner this past summer, Bass would have been the logical FA pick, if they wanted to keep Yi.

As a benefit of the Nets injuries, even Hassell is looking like a solid player (expiring contract) that might interest Orlando and free up cap space for them!

If Nets got Bass’ contract now, they could afford another similar contract plus Lebron this summer.

by jerry25 on Nov 27, 2009 2:41 AM EST reply actions

Man, I miss VC.

This trade was of the absolute most lopsided deals I remember. Otis Smith fleeced Rod Thorn.

That being said, I think people overrate way too much Anderson’s potential. Sure, Id have loved to keep him and there should have been no way we have lost young talent when we were trading our superstar player, but anyways what’s is done, and I dont think Ryan will be that special, I wish him nothing but the best, but Im happy we have Yi, whom I consider a more talented player. Lets just hope he can stay healthier.

by Andrés on Nov 27, 2009 7:26 AM EST reply actions

Throwing Ryan into trade to get CLee it is one of Rod/Kiki worst moves. How can you trade a 21 year old 6’10 guy who can shoot lights out for another 2 guard who is now one of 4 2 guards on the roster and looks like 3rd or 4th best. Hoping CLee gets feet under him and shows he can play. Trading Ryan at this stage was sheer lunacy, however he works out. And anyone who says they prefers Yi go back and take a look at how Brad Sellers worked out for Chicago. Yi is Asian Brad Sellers. Couldnt we have thrown Yi into the deal. We keep giving away guys that can play, Curly is other example from last year, you deserve to end up going 0-15.

by netsnuts on Nov 27, 2009 11:36 AM EST reply actions

I watched Orlando’s game last night and Anderson was unimpressive, he hasnt played all that well lately (except for the Miami game).

Stop making it look as if Ryan were an AS in the making and Yi a complete bust. It’s not like if we were comparing Yi to KG. Ryan and Yi are similar players. I think Yi is the more talented player, but Anderson possesses the higher IQ. Anyways his ceiling is not that high either, and he wouldnt be the long term answer as our starting PF. He’ll be a really good player, but he wont be that special.

I’ll repeat it again: it’s a shame that we were stupid enough to throw Ryan into that deal, which was ridiculously lopsided, but if you think he would be as good as he looks playing next to Howard you’re kidding yourselves. Yeah, I hate to lose Ryan, but we have Yi, who can do a similar job.

by Andrés on Nov 27, 2009 12:12 PM EST reply actions

@ Andres. I saw Ryan hit 2 threes and then take it to the hoop for a conventional 3 point play against Miami. Had to turn it off at that point as I was starting to get sick to my stomach. He is 21. Have to disagree with you about Yi. At this pont Yi is a complete bust! Only hope is that he will be switched to the three and earn some minutes there (Fat chance with the resident small ball guru). He is way too weak to play 4. Wish it wasn’t so but that is what I have seen so far.
