Who's the Real "Kobe Stopper"?

A lot of players have been dubbed "Kobe Stoppers" and one, Ruben Patterson, even claimed the title. As John Schuhmann points out in his column on the NBA's best defenders, the real "Kobe Stopper" isn't an individual, but a team: the Nets. No team, he writes, has had success against Bryant that the Nets have had. So does that mean, dare we say it, that the real "Kobe Stopper" is Lawrence Frank??

Duh, of course not. Frank is the anti-christ. He’s to blame for H1N1, SARS, AIDS, HIV, and the black plague. Bet you didn’t know he was around for that, did you? He’s older than he looks!

Karma for him shafting the Nets in the ’96 draft

Well… Frank is one of the masters of ensuring his team goes through constant offensive ineptitude – so maybe he’s found a way to spread that virus to opposing players?

I have a feeling that this year will be different after watching Courtney Lee get torched in the finals.

You guys have been conditioned to believe Vince Carter is a bad defender, but that isn’t true – particularly of his on ball defense. He has great anticipation skills and doesn’t by fakes.
Carter was impressive defensively every time he faced Kobe, including being left 1 on 1 against Kobe in two end-game situations the last 2 years. Both times Kobe missed and the Nets won. Phil Jackson has also called Carter a good defender on several occassions – something sure to be lost on the consensus thinkers out there

My guess was going to be that Paul Erstein was the Kobe stopper. The self deprecating Woody Allen of Kobe stopping.

I don’t know Jason, I saw Kidd and RJ guarding Kobe more than VC all those years ago. I also watched VC last week when we played the magic. Boy, he looked slower, older, indifferent and was a negative on defense. Sure, he can defend a little, but he mostly choses not too.

Jason Kidd was a superb defender and RJ was really good when we wanted to be as well. Vince took too many plays off on the defensive end. He could easily have been one of the best all around players of all time, however, what has kept him from being in that group was and is his lack of focus on defense. He could turn a switch on to play defense when he wanted to, but, more often than not he coasted through many defensive sequences.

Lol, do u have to make everything a tribute to L. frank?
If Frank was the reason, I will see how this team do against Kobe this year. Re: VInce and kObe. One thing that you overlooked is that Kobe sometimes needed to guard Vince, and that wasn’t exactly a energy-reserving task.

If you think Kidd and RJ were the reason , how did Kobe do against those two during the Nets back to back final run?

Vince Carter handled Kobe 1 on 1 when we played the Lakers. They both wanted to get the better of each other and VC was containing Kobe each time. Those were games Vince definitely got up for. Some ppl just wanna hate on Carter no matter what and never give him credit when credit is due. You cant go by a guy’s reputation, you have to see what he actually does on the court.

About 4-5 years ago, the Nets beat LAL at home by 1 or 2 points. Kobe got the ball for the final shot and the Nets stopped him. After the game, Kobe credited LFrank with knowing what the play was going to be and defending for it.
For the Rudy Gay fans out there, the article lists the 10 players whose defense hurt their team the most and he is on that list.
