Devin Harris and the "I" Word

Matt McQueeny, who writes the Nets fan blog on NJ.com, asks a question team brass would rather avoid: Is Devin Harris too injury-prone? McQueeny is careful not to blame Harris nor suggest he "babies" his injuries. But with his groin injury, it won't be easy for Harris to play 70 games this season, the third straight year he'd miss that mark. McQueeny simply asks should Harris change his hard-charging style?

If he’s going to have a long career in the NBA, he just has to change his game to become more of a “pass-first” type of guy who can use the threat of a J or drive to get others open. Both Nash and Paul have nearly a 50% FG percentage. That would be a good place to start.

Devin Harris should learn how to pass. His charging the lane time after time is bad for the team and bad for his health. He is a great talent but plays the game recklessly. Still is young and seems like a very bright lad. Hopefully he can change his stripes.

“Mike Says:

Devin Harris should learn how to pass."
And this is the end of the story right here.
There is no mystery as to why Yi and CDR are more effective when Harris is not on the floor.

We all would like him to have a pass first mentality, but that’s probably impossible. Devin just doesn’t have the passing ability or court vision to be effective like Nash or Paul. Those two guys really can make their teammates better, because of their passing.
I think his game reminds me more of an AI lite. But AI was the quicker and better guard, who was an MVP and could lead his team to the finals at that time.

BWoosley, thanks for typo catch. that has been fixed.

Shows you how tough AI is. Great player but can only lead a team to the Finals that is built just to suit him. “Shoot as much as you want AI, pass when you feel like it and we’ll play defense.”
Selfish player if you ask me. Can’t even bring himself to come off the bench.
I dont want Devin to be that.

Well, I don’t think there will be many worries about that. Iverson in his prime was able to keep himself on the floor, Harris doesn’t look like he’ll crack the 50 game mark this season

Imo there is nothing wrong with Harris’ game. I don’t think he likes the coach so he is in no hurry to get back but when he’s on the court I like everthing about him. Alston wishes he had the same chemistry as Harris does with Lopez.

Devin has been hit with the injury bug, that is all. Groin injuries take time to heal. Tony Parker gets injured, Deron Williams gets injured. Don’t even start with the pass first mentality. Devin can’t pass as well as other point guards—that is NEVER going to change. You need to take him as he is. He is a great perimeter defender with unmatched speed and a shooting touch that comes and goes.
Let him do what he does best—get in the lane, which NO ONE on our team can do with the same results. You need to keep him with Brook, they are a good match and you need to get people around him who can shoot long distance, not this Yi guys or this Simmons guy who can’t put a ball through a black hole.
The fact that we can’t pick up a win without Devin on the team speaks great volumes about his talent. Please let him heal and please let him become stronger.

Have you guys considered that Devin might not want to play for the NETS?

He is a T-Mac, Yao, K-Mart like player. In health they are good. but way to injury prone.
Plz Harris, penetrate less and take more open shots. Feed :Lopez and When CDR is back, he will be your Dwayne Wade like player…

I’ve been saying the same thing for 2 years. He is too fragile for his drive to the hoop style. No offense to his manhood, if anything it’s a compliment. But it’s virtually guaranteed he’ll land awkwardly several times a season and mess up one joint or another. Can’t build a team around him because of it. He has to be a 2d option.

Harris bashers are a bunch of fools. He was a pass first PG in Dallas, and led them deep in the playoffs in that one year where he was their starting PG in the playoffs.
Harris has a different role with the Nets. He cannot be pass first since a third of the roster has no business even being in the league, with the remainder of the roster filled with role players who normally would not be logging 30-40 minutes with most teams(exception Brook Lopez).
CDR has better stars with Cevin out of the lineup? You are basing this on 6 games this season? And wow, what do you know, Harris goes out and Yi and the rest of the guys have their PPG averages go up! I bet if we remove TWill and Lopez from the lineup too, Yi/CDR/Simmons/Boone’s totals will go up as well…it’s the simple fact that you lose points from an injury, therefore, others have to supply the points.
Unreal. Some of you are utterly clueless.

D.Harris needs to run like a fastbreak team. Come out of the game and rest while the team goes into a half court game. The starting guards should be when the team gets healthy. D.Harris & C.Douglas-Roberts and the second unit K.Dooling & C.Lee…..J.Hayes starts at the three and T.Williams starts with the second unit at the three.

harris can pass. The only thing is that no one can catch or hang to the ball, even when the pass is perfect for an point guard. He must be going with the better odds. Driving and laying it up. I would too.
