Marbury: "I Want to Play for the Brooklyn Nets"

It's always hard to figure why Stephon Marbury says anything. But on Tuesday, the unemployed point guard used Twitter to let fans know where he wants to play: "Rod Thorn is my man. I want to play for the BROOKLYN NETS. I said it." Okay, he said it. Problem is that even if everything goes well, the Nets won't be in his hometown til February 2012...the same month the former Net turns 35.

Not even the intensely disciplined Celtics could tolerate Marbury. Completely washed up, and so he throws a hail mary asinine comment like this? He just ruined any chance of Lebron coming near the Nets :(

This guy will not get a job in the NBA, what does he think of himself??
by Netsfan on Oct 7, 2009 1:36 AM EDT reply actions
Kissing the behind of the person who threw him out of the team?
If he can pick up towels, balls, or distribute Gatorades … then he has future with the Nets. Lol.

Once he serves his marijuana suspension, everyone will want him.

the only way Marbury gets on this team is to become Chinese

We’re posting players’ twitter comments now?
Great, there are about 450 players in the league!

What the heck does he have to do with lebron?
by Kevin on Oct 7, 2009 3:08 AM EDT reply actions
His NBA career is done. No one in the league would ever request for his service.

@ Kevin,
Just saying that the prospect of Marbury playing with the Nets in the future would make Lebron shy away from playing with us…It was meant as a joke, admittedly a bad non-related one. Sorry for the confusion

@biggie
we’ve been posting twitter comments for a couple of months. If we find, or someone points us to, a twitter related to the Nets, we will post it.

You should be thankful you have a website where you can find everything and anything about the nets, no matter how trivial you think they are.
On Marbury, I’d rather trade Devin Harris for Adam Morrison than sign Marbury

I have a better chance of playing for the Nets than Stephon Marbury.

BAHAHAHAHAHA. ALL ALONE 33—at home on the couch. You know he’s gonna buy himself a custom “Marbury” Brooklyn Nets uni and dream about it.

Trash is Trash never had it in regards to the way he carrys himself. I hope he doesn’t even pony up and buy Nets season tickets at the new Brooklyn/Barclay Center. He is just a class clown whom could play a little B-Ball. A perfect example of somebody whom always thought he could make it on B-Ball talent and nothing else in regards to character. Go away Marbury, just put in the bag and join the circus. Again he is a clown with a few dollars and some B-Ball ability. Rod Thorn is throwing up right at this minute hearing Marbury say he is his man. What a joke he still thinks its about him. The Circus is Waitng….Go Brooklyn Nets!!

Yinka Dare probably has a better chance of playing for the Nets again than Marbury.

He’ll be on some bad VH1 dating show within the next 6 months.

I think of every possible scenario, be it, trading all our good players left, moving to another city, moving to another city AND changing names, hiring Don Nelson as head coach, etc… acquiring Marbury would be the only thing that could possibly happen that would make me contemplate switching teams and rooting for someone else…

@ Dziedzic
Just because Marbury is quirky and selfish on the basketball court doesn’t mean he’s a bad person. I remember after Hurricane Katrina hit, and the NBA had a press conference with a bunch of players telling the media how much they donated. Most players were patting themselves on the back for giving $100K – $200K, but Marbury broke down and his agent had to tell people he gave a million to the relief efforts
Sure, he’s a little (ok, a lot) weird, and he doesnt trust his teammates, getting assists only when he cant take the shot himself. But that doesn’t make him a bad person, and certainly not one with questionable character

“Problem is that even if everything goes well, the Nets won’t be in his hometown til February 2012”
I think there needs to be an article posted with the fact that the Nets won’t be in BK til Feb 2012 earliest as the headline.
A lot of people here are getting way ahead of themselves saying Lebron will be playing in BK next season.
Having that info up front and center can help avoid confusion and make my “job” a lot easier when on the board.

@ Jb
marbury is…oh man. There is really isnt a word to sum him up. If he even attends a game i’ll in thr barclays center ill be mad. He should be escorted off the premises on sight.

at JB:
for real New Jersey Nets fans like us, it’s basically impossible to think about the basketball side due to the fear of the team being permanently taken away from us.
As for the comment Peter made above, I think that was pretty disrespectful to make the comparison to Yinka Dare – you do realize he has passed away right? And if you do, that’s simply not funny.
by Isaac on Oct 7, 2009 10:51 AM EDT reply actions
At this point Marbury couldn’t even join a company bowling league team let alone an NBA team.
by TheMann on Oct 7, 2009 11:24 AM EDT reply actions
Yinka Dare passed away. And Marbury can’t pass. Perfect analogy. P.S. I was not aware of Yinka dying. May God bless his soul…

No! Anyone that wants marburry on the team is insane. They clearly are new nets fans that didn’t suffer through the worst years when he was on the team. Marburry is awful and hes a headcase and ruins everything he touches.
NO WAY TO MARBURRY. I WOULDN’T EVEN LET HIM RIP TICKETS AT THE DOOR!

Taken away from you??? They’re moving like 8 miles away, you can get there by public trans in no time… I’ve been taking the LIRR from Suffolk county to Penn, then either walking to port authority or dealing with the secaucus junction nonsense for years… I can’t wait to be able to take a much shorter train ride. GO BROOKLYN NETS!! I just hope marbury doesn’t DRIVE to the games….
by Jb on Oct 7, 2009 12:10 PM EDT reply actions
Marbury was the first NBA player to lend his name to a venture that produced decent and cheap basketball shoes at a time when kids were being mugged for their $100 Nikes. Doesn’t change everything else he has done or get him a place on our team, but he deserves some credit for that.
by jabez on Oct 7, 2009 12:17 PM EDT reply actions
Yeah…I travel 4 hours out across 3 states to see the Nets play as it is right now. If they move, its still going to be 4 hours. They aren’t getting taken away from anyone!
by Tim on Oct 7, 2009 12:21 PM EDT reply actions
@jabez
you really think is because of the kids. I think is more that NIke and addidas won’t sign him. Even before he sign a contract for the cheap sneakers. He was complaining about having no endorsement deals. Get Real!

HAHA THIS GUY probably wont be even welcomed to his own neighborhood thats how bad this guy is in NBA he is all act !! any1 is stephon marbury’s guy now so he can just collect million dollars
by vince on Oct 7, 2009 12:28 PM EDT reply actions
@Seeker
If he did something that turned out bad, we’d be slamming him even if his intentions were pure as driven snow. Whatever his reason for doing the sneakers, it was a good thing that he deserves at least one kind word among all the bashing here. Of course, at the press conference announcing the sneakers, Marbury said, “The way the world is going, we need more people like me,” so it’s tough to argue your point.

I wish lbj and wade and bosh said that other then him.

Answer: NO!
Will he even have a job in the NBA while the Nets are still in New Jersey? Is there a worse locker room cancer in the league right now? No, thanks.
by sublicon on Oct 7, 2009 3:40 PM EDT reply actions
He is a knucklehead and threw away immense basketball talent. But he is the product of his parents. I remember reading about his mother being a demanding PITA at Nets games to the staff. I do think Marbury, as a person, isn’t as bad as you all are making him to be. His Katrina moment showed some heart. I just think the dude is a bit lost and was an immature brat in his young NBA days.
by Letsgetitstartedinhere on Oct 7, 2009 8:32 PM EDT reply actions
He is overrated anway. Keep in mind that Marbury almost missed all of last season just because of a contract dispute with the Knicks. If it wasn’t for that free agencey he got in buyout deal with the Celtics, he wouldn’t have played at all last season. I am glad that the Nets traded him for JKidd when they did, because they actually got better and even made their first NBA Finals appearence. Even if the Nets do end up in Brooklyn, he will probably be retired from the NBA before that happens.

Time and JB
You guys need to recognize traffic and commuting. It may be 15 miles away but we don’t have flying cars.
Don’t act all righteous like we NJ residents don’t know what we speak of.
How often do you go from NJ to NYC after work? Gimme a break.
This argument has taken place a million times already. Its getting old.
